The past three years were the warmest ever recorded, according to a report released Thursday.
UN statistics confirmed that temperatures in 2015,2016 and 2017 reached record-breaking heights.
It’s “a clear sign of continuing long-term climate change,” said the World Meteorological Organization report .
While 2017 comes in as the second hottest year, it was the only of the three to not have an El Niño, which increases temperatures. The last El Niño occurred from 2015 to 2016.
Wacky weather conditions have struck various states, bringing the U. S. “its most expensive year ever in terms of weather and climate disasters,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in the report.
“Seventeen of the 18 warmest years on record have all been during this century, and the degree of warming during the past three years has been exceptional.”
The organization plans to issue a complete statement on climate change in March, providing an overview of the trends including rising sea levels and climbing concentrations of carbon dioxide.
