Police in Richardson, Texas, were negotiating with suspect, who barricaded himself inside an apartment complex.
RICHARDSON, Texas — A police officer responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex in a Dallas suburb was shot and killed Wednesday night.
Police surrounded a building at Breckinridge Point Apartments, where authorities negotiated with the shooting suspect who barricaded himself inside the complex. Police said he continued to fire shots.
Richardson Police Department confirmed an officer, whose name was not released, was shot while responding to the apartment complex around 7 p.m. CT. He was taken to Medical City Plano. One bystander was shot, but was not sent to the hospital.
Residents near the apartment complex at East Renner and North Star roads were told to shelter in place.
A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter hovered over the scene.
Later, explosions were heard.
The Richardson officer was the second law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty this week.
An El Paso County (Colo.) Sheriff’s deputy marking his 11-year anniversary with the force was killed Monday in a shooting that also left three law enforcement officers wounded.
The fallen deputy, Micah Flick, 34, is survived by his wife and 7-year-old twins.
Flick became the third officer to be gunned down in the line of duty in Colorado in the past five weeks.
In Michigan, 25-year-old Detroit Police Officer Glenn Doss was shot responding to a domestic violence call Jan. 24. He died days later.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted his sympathy, saying «the hearts and soul of Texas mourn» for the fallen officer.
