LG plans to unveil its next flagship, the LG G7 ThinQ, on May 2. How will the company improve upon last year’s award-winning LG G6? If rumors are to be believed the LG G7 ThinQ is going to be a huge departure from its predecessor. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming LG G7 ThinQ.
LG pulled out all the stops to deliver one of 2017’s best smartphones in the G6. With its breakthrough design, massive display for its size, excellent wide-angle camera, and dependable performance, it was a return to form for the company that had a bit of a misstep with 2016’s G5.
But rumors have been swirling about the company’s 2018 flagship for quite some time, and we finally have some confirmed features and specifications for the LG G7.

According to an LG press release, the LG G7 ThinQ will be the first ever smartphone to feature the Boombox Speaker, a revolutionary piece of audio tech that will increase the phone’s base volume level by 6 decibels, as well as doubling the amount of bass. How does it do this? The phone’s inside doubles as a resonance chamber, enhancing and boosting the sound from the phone’s speakers — resulting in what LG calls a “boombox” level of sound. Even better, if you need some more volume, placing the phone on an empty box will allow the resonance chamber to act as a woofer, amplifying the bass effect even more.
Prefer to listen to your music more privately? You’ve still got something to look forward to. The G7 ThinQ will be the first smartphone to feature DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, giving your headphones 7.1 channels of supreme sound awesomeness — and without the need for exceptionally expensive premium headphones or special music files. If you do have those super-duper headphones or special audio files, you’re not left out either — the G7 ThinQ will have a Hi-Fi Quad DAC and support for the Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) audio format to deliver that audiophile-level audial bliss.
The LG G7 ThinQ will be unveiled in New York on May 2, and invitations have been sent out to save the date. It also confirms the phone’s name, which had previously been the subject of speculation, with early rumors saying LG was considering moving away from the “G” branding. The phone’s official release date will likely be shared on the day too, but LG doesn’t always talk about prices, preferring to leave that down to carriers. Expect U. S. networks to announce prices and deals very soon after the press conference.
With little more than a week until we get our first official glimpse of the LG G7 ThinQ, the electronics manufacturer posted a video on its YouTube channel with Korean boyband BTS teasing the event. The band asks viewers to check back into the channel regularly to learn their favorite seven features and tips about the upcoming flagship.
The LG G6 remains a great example of how to minimize bezels and create an eye-catching modern design, refined by LG with the V30. What will the LG G7 look like? It’s likely to continue with the small-bezel look, and it’s now confirmed to add a notch to the screen, just like the Huawei P20 and the Apple iPhone X.
With just a little over a week until the expected LG G7 ThinQ announcement, an image showing the display on the upcoming flagship has leaked on Reddit. It’s just the latest in a series of leaked images of the upcoming phone. Famed mobile leaker Evan Blass has provided several images of the G7 via his Twitter account, giving us a great look at what could be the LG G7 ThinQ from all angles. The notch in the screen is clearly visible, along with a chin at the opposite end, while the fingerprint sensor sits on the back, under dual vertically mounted camera lenses. This will be a new design approach for LG, which has previously preferred horizontally mounted lenses on its phones. The device has a USB Type-C charging socket, and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom. The muted silver/grey color isn’t likely to be the only option.
Along one side you can see three buttons — likely volume and sleep/wake — plus on the other side, a single button. This may be a new feature giving quick access to Google Assistant. This was previously discussed in a report from CNET, and is something similar to Samsung’s Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9.
It certainly fits with other leaks we’ve seen of the LG G7, including the family shot below, published by Android Headlines. The image shows the upcoming LG flagship coming in four colors: Aurora black, platinum grey, raspberry rose, and Moroccan blue. The Moroccan blue finish will have two more variants: High gloss and matte.
While LG hasn’t announced all the details about the new LG G7 ThinQ, it has confirmed to Digital Trends the phone will boast a 6.1-inch LCD display with a 3,120 x 1,440 resolution and a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. LG said it’s the brightest display available in a smartphone, but it’s actually the brightest on a smartphone with an LCD screen. The Samsung Galaxy S9, which has an AMOLED display, can hit above 1,100 nits.
LG has also released some screenshots of the display — which confirm the existence of a notch. The notch seems to be a slightly smaller than the notch on the iPhone X, but it’s a little bigger than the Huawei P20 Pro’s notch.
The new display will be easily operable in almost any lighting conditions, including bright sunlight — and it’ll still cut down on power consumption by as much as 30 percent compared to the LG G6. The resolution might seem a little strange, but that’s because the aspect ratio is even longer than the G6’s, coming in at 19.5:9.
You can also change the color profile of the display to suite your tastes with modes including Auto, Eco, Cinema, Game, Photo, or Web, as can be seen in the screenshots.
Why no OLED? It looks like LG may be reserving that display technology for its higher tier V-series. The colors on the G7 ThinQ display may not be as deep as an OLED display, but its brightness will certainly be something to behold at launch.
Will the LG G6 replacement be a flagship phone, with Galaxy S9 -challenging specs? The Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor is almost certainly going to be used, with reports from Venture Beat and a recent Geekbench benchmark test both stating the newest chip would be inside. LG has worked with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon 845 processor since May 2017, industry sources told South Korea’s Aju Business Daily. It will provide a “25-percent performance uplift” over last year’s Snapdragon 835, and feature an X20 LTE modem for gigabit connectivity on supported networks.
As for the battery on the upcoming LG G7 ThinQ, it looks like it will be a bit smaller than the 3,300mAh battery that shipped in last year’s LG G6.
