Serena Williams may be one of the most interesting female professional athletes in the game, but a recent tidbit the tennis star revealed about her dad has a lot of people scratching their heads.
In her HBO docu-series called “Being Serena,” Williams reveals that her dad canceled on walking her down the aisle just an hour before her wedding. (RELATED: Serena Williams ‘Almost Died’ After Giving Birth To Daughter)
“He was in New Orleans, he had a suit, and I know he was really excited,” Serena says in the documentary. “But then he wrote me and said: Serena, I don’t want you to be mad at me, but I just can’t walk you down the aisle. I’m not myself anymore. I’m just too nervous.”
But Serena says she took her father’s cancellation with grace.
“Daddy, it’s okay, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay, too,” she said. “I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it.”
The wedding still went on and Serena married her longtime boyfriend and Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian.
I’m not sure what sort of mental or physical health Serena Williams’ dad is in, but it seems pretty pathetic that he wouldn’t be there to walk his daughter down the aisle. This is the same guy who coached her for years and saw her rise to stardom and prestige in the tennis world. Not walking your daughter down the aisle because you’re “nervous” is what losers and betas do. Not what coaches and fathers of superstar athletes do.
It’s one thing if he had a valid reason for missing the wedding. Like if he was off singlehandedly beating the terrorists or he was recovering from a life-saving surgery just hours before the ceremony. But if “nerves” were what held him back, then I wouldn’t be so understanding if I were Serena.
