June 13 (UPI) — An FBI special agent in Denver who accidentally shot a nightclub patron after doing a backflip has been charged with one count of second-degree assault.
Agent Chase Bishop, based in the FBI’s Washington field office, turned himself in Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest .
Prosecutors say Bishop, 29, was partying while off duty last week at a Denver club. Video footage of the incident shows Bishop dancing in a crowd of people. After performing a backflip, his gun fell from its holster — and discharged when he picked it up. A man close by was seriously injured in the leg, but is expected to recover.
Denver police are now awaiting the results of Bishop’s alcohol and drug test.
«We are filing this charge now rather than waiting until the [blood alcohol content] report is received, which we understand could take another week, because sufficient evidence has been presented,» Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in the statement.
«If an additional charge needs to be filed after further evidence is received, we can file those charges then.»
The FBI said it’s conducting an internal investigation.
