Samsung’s display panels are undoubtedly one of the best one can find on smartphones. Be it the vibrant colors, or the curved edges on its flagships, Samsung’s AMOLED panels are impeccable. However, glass is fragile, and it’s surely not a rosy sight for anybody to shatter a part of your phone that you use the most, the display itself. So to try and tackle this problem, Samsung claims to have come up with their own solution, which is an unbreakable flexible OLED panel.
Samsung said in the press release that the unbreakable display passed the real-time durability test based on military standards set by the US Department of Defense. In support of the technology used by Samsung, Hojung Kim, General Manager at Samsung Display, said “the fortified plastic window is especially suitable for smartphones because of its light weight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass.”
The company claims to have developed this technology primarily for devices that require a durable build like automobile consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for learning. A test was performed to verify the claim, which included a series of drops. The first test was 26 drops from 1.2 meters, followed by high and low temperature tests. The panel continued to function normally with no damage to its front, sides or edges. The final test included a drop from a height of 1.8 meters, which is more than the US military’s standard, but the panel still survived.
This is not the first time we’re seeing a technology like this on a display. Moto has a few phones under its ‘force’ lineup which ships with an “unbreakable” display of similar sorts. While the major focus is on shatter resistance in these cases, the display ends up picking a lot of scratches due to low hardness levels of the plastic coating used to make the display shatter resistant. It would be interesting to see how Samsung addresses this issue.
