Now, that’s how you catch a football.
The Eagles turned momentum in their season-opening 18-12 win over the Falcons on Thursday night thanks to a play the Patriots ran against them in the Super Bowl. Except, in the Patriots’ Super Bowl defeat Tom Brady would drop the pass and this time Nick Foles would pull his in against a surprised Falcons secondary.
The pass from wide receiver Nelson Agholor came on a third-and-5 from the Falcons’ 41-yard line and resulted in a 15-yard gain. Jay Ajayi would score from 1 yard out later in the drive to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.
“I mean, it’s a good play,” Foles told reporters on Thursday. “This league, there’s a lot of great plays, there’s a lot of great minds, so when you see something like that, that’s unique and it works well, you try to execute it like they do.”
It was also a reminder of the “Philly Special” play Philadelphia used against New England on a fourth-and-goal in the Super Bowl, where tight end Trey Burton — now with the Bears — threw a touchdown to Foles. The play against Atlanta was called “Philly Philly.”
“I went over there and talked to him and said, ‘This might be a good time,’” Foled said of head coach Doug Pederson. “He pointed to the call sheet, and I was like, ‘That’s what I was coming over here for. So yeah, it worked again.’”
