HMD will be skipping Beta Labs for the Nokia 6.1 and will instead go straight to the stable Pie release «soon»
HMD Global is working hard to meet its promise of rolling out Android 9 Pie to most of its Nokia smartphones. The Nokia 7 Plus received the stable Pie update last month and the Nokia 6.1 Plus is on course to get the stable update as it is already on beta. Next up on the list is the Nokia 6.1 and HMD’s chief Juho Sarvikas tweeted on Friday that the company will be skipping Beta Labs for the device and will instead go straight to the stable release «soon.»
Sarvikas on Friday tweeted that Digital Wellbeing is available on Beta Preview for Android One devices on Pie. This means Nokia 7 Plus and the Nokia 6.1 Plus users running Pie (stable or beta) can now download the Digital Wellbeing app from the Play Store. Digital Wellbeing is a Pie-exclusive feature that gives the user an overview of how much time is being spent on apps. Users will also get options like daily app timers to set time limits on apps, Wind Down which will turn the screen into Grayscale at night and Do Not Disturb which will mute notifications while you sleep.
Sarvikas also replied to a user’s query on when the Nokia 6.1 will receive Pie to which the HMD chief replied that the company will be skipping Beta Labs and will roll out the Android update soon. HMD has already promised an October timeframe for the Nokia 6.1, so it looks like users can expect to see the Pie update in the next few days.
The Nokia 6.1 was announced earlier this year as a refresh to last year’s Nokia 6. The device brings a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dual-tone design with copper accents all around as visual upgrades over last year’s model. The Nokia 6.1 sports a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio and a 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 630 processor coupled with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of internal storage. Much like most other Nokia phones this year, the Nokia 6.1 is also an Android One device that ships with Oreo out-of-the-box.
The Nokia 6.1 also gets Zeiss-branded optics with a 16-megapixel rear camera and f/2.0 aperture and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The device houses a 3,000mAh battery with fast charge support over USB Type-C. Notably, HMD recently slashed the prices of the Nokia 6.1 in India following the launch of the Nokia 6.1 Plus. The base variant is now available at Rs 13,499 as opposed to its original price of Rs 16,999, while the 4GB variant is now priced at Rs 16,499, down from its original price of Rs 18,999.
