Samsung unveiled its new and revamped smartphone UI to replace its existing Samsung Experience UX and are calling it One UI. One UI focuses on providing a clutter-free software experience while using your smartphone based on user feedback from previous builds of Samsung Experience.
One UI provides a cleaner look to the interface by relocating vital options and components of a service or app to areas which are easier to reach while using the phone one-handed. With smartphone displays being rounded off at the corners in recent times, One UI rounds off the elements on screen in order to match up to the aesthetics. Rounded icons, search bars, and other UI elements add to this experience.
The new One UI adds what Samsung calls focus blocks which basically contrasts the area on the screen in focus, for example, your notifications, from the background and other info on the screen to avoid distractions and let you focus on what’s important. Another change is in terms of how much information is displayed on the screen. For example, on the dialer app, once you start dialing a number, elements like the search bar disappear as they’re not required anymore because One UI knows that you’re dialing a number and not searching for it.
Also, contextual menus and prompts have been moved to the bottom portion of the display which again helps with reachability when using the phone one-handed. The top half of the display is dedicated to viewing content only while all the interactive content on native apps has been moved to the space below the center of the display. There’s also a new system-wide dark mode which complements Samsung’s AMOLED displays.
One UI will be available under a beta program for the Galaxy S9, S9+ and Note 9 starting this month in the US, Germany, and Korea and will roll out as a stable update all over the world starting early next year.
