The Pennsylvania tourist found dead at a Dominican Republic resort succumbed to a heart attack — and her symptoms were strikingly similar to those of the Maryland couple who died there five days later, according to Dominican authorities.
Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, did have a history of heart conditions, her husband Daniel Frank Werner said, according to a statement from the Grand Bahía Príncipe hotel.
Her brother-in-law, Jay McDonald, told The Washington Post that Werner died of pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, but declined to comment further.
Schaup-Werner — as well as Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Ann Day, 49, had fluid in their lungs, according to a statement by Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez Sanchez, obtained by CNN, referencing preliminary autopsy reports.
