The nation’s top infectious disease doctor warned during a Tuesday Senate hearing that coronavirus cases in the United States could top 100,000 a day if the current spikes in southern states don’t reverse course.
The nation’s top infectious disease doctor warned that coronavirus cases in the United States could top 100,000 a day if the current spikes in southern states don’t reverse course.
“We are now having 40-plus-thousand new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around, and so I am very concerned,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health.
Fauci, responding Tuesday to a line of questioning from Sen. Elizabeth Warren during a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing, said, “Clearly we are not in total control right now.”
Fauci cited videos and photos of people congregating in close quarters without masks and said, “We are going to continue to be in a lot of trouble and there’s going to be a lot of hurt if that doesn’t stop.
