The United States Supreme Court’s rejection on Friday of the utterly cynical attempt to overturn the election results of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin was a victory for federalism, separation of powers and the rule of law. The case at hand, Texas v. Pennsylvania, amounted to nothing more than “a mockery of federalism and separation of powers,” as a group of conservative lawmakers and legal scholars called it. The legal challenge sought to trample over the long-established law granting states authority over their own elections, and misuse the Supreme Court to resolve matters rightly left to the states. It shouldn’t have been hard for any principled conservative to see Texas v. Pennsylvania as a hollow Hail Mary predicated on flimsy legal grounds at best. The stunt managed to get the support of over 100 Republican members of Congress who, in signing onto the effort, made clear that they think politics is a team sport first and foremost. Every federal lawmaker who supported Texas v.
