Storm Damaged Portion Of California’s Highway 1 To Reopen April 23

A 150-foot section was ravaged by severe winter weather in January 2021.
Having been mangled by a winter storm in January 2021, and prompted its closure, a repaired section of California’s Highway 1 will be reopened on April 23. Caused by excessive rainfall, the 150-foot-damaged section altered road traffic within parts of Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. Up until its reopening, Big Sur was open and accessible from Monterey County in the north, and northern San Luis Obispo County beach communities were accessible from the south. “Anytime Highway 1 is impacted, there is a perception that there is limited access to experience Big Sur and the greater Monterey County,” said Rob O’Keefe, president and CEO of Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau, in a media statement. “While that isn’t the case, the reopening of Highway 1 is of great importance to the success of the County, especially as we gear up for the return of travel. O’Keefe added that the reopening of this portion of Highway 1 “will grant travelers full access to explore the destination’s incredible outdoor attractions, breathtaking scenic views and first-rate lodging.
