Disney and Pixar’s Luca will earn around $80,000 in a single theater this weekend as it debuts on Disney+ nationwide. In what we hope is the calm before the F9 storm, Lionsgate and Millennium’s The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard was the top movie at the domestic box office on Friday. The R-rated action comedy, reuniting Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek while adding Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman to the mix, earned $3.05 million on Friday. The film opened with $3.9 million on Wednesday, a slightly inflated number that included Tuesday previews and three evenings of nationwide sneak previews last weekend. Nonetheless, we’re probably looking at a $10.16 million Fri-Sun frame and a $15.51 million Wed-Sun debut. That’s obviously below the first film’s $21 million Fri-Sun launch in 2017, but if we look at the Wed-Sun total as equal to what a Fri-Sun opening would have been, it’s not a cataclysmic downturn. The Hitman’s Bodyguard was a rarity four summers ago, an original, star-driven, R-rated action comedy that succeeded theatrically even with mixed-negative reviews. It legged out to $76 million domestic and $172 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Whether anyone requested a sequel, the existence of a follow-up, and thus a “franchise” or an “IP” was encouraging.
