Fourteen people are dead after a blaze ripped through a COVID-19 field hospital overnight Thursday in North Macedonia. The fire started late Wednesday at the hospital that had been set up in Tetovo, about 30 miles west of the capital Skopje, amid a spike in cases that strained local hospitals, The Associated Press reports. Because those who died were COVID-19 patients — no medical personnel were killed — there are special protocols in place and their identification, ordered by the main prosecutor’s office in Skopje, is expected to take longer than usual. Three days of mourning have been declared by Tetovo Mayor Teuta Arifi in honor of the victims, whose bodies were transferred to Skopje hospitals, according to Health Ministry officials.
