Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was awarded the European Union’s prestigious human rights award Wednesday, as he serves a 2.5-year prison sentence for a parole violation charge he has denounced as politically motivated. Earlier this month the Nobel Peace Prize was jointly won by Dmitry Muratov, founding editor of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper in Russia, and Maria Ressa of the Philippines.
