Zodiac Killer case is still open despite new claims: FBI

A group of former law enforcement pros want their new claim to be tested.
The Zodiac Killer may still be out there. A team of former law enforcement investigators said Wednesday that they may have cracked the case of the mass murderer believed to be responsible for at least a handful of deaths in Northern California in the 1960s. But the Federal Bureau of Investigation isn’t buying it. “The case remains open and there is no new information to report,” the FBI told news outlets. Case Breakers, which claims as its members dozens of veteran sleuths, said in a statement that they think they know the identity of the “California psychopath who shot, stabbed or choked to death possibly as many as 10 victims between 1962 and 1970.” That group said their suspect, an Air Force veteran who worked as a housepainter, died in 2018. They identified him as Gary F. Poste. Case Breakers believes that alleged killer’s casualties include Riverside, Calif., stabbing victim Cheri Jo Bates, whose body was found in 1966. Riverside police Officer Ryan J. Railsback told NBC News that there is no connection between Bates and the Zodiac Killer, though Case Breakers disagrees and is asking for a DNA test that they think could link the two.
