An ice shelf larger than New York City has collapsed in East Antarctica, scientists said Friday. The massive collapse, which was captured by satellite images, was the first in the region. East Antarctica, which is home to the coldest locations on the planet, has for long been seen as stable and, until recently, even thought to be more resistant to the effects of global warming. The ice shelf was about 460 square miles wide. New York City is about 300 square miles in size. The ice shelf, holding in the Conger and Glenzer glaciers from the warmer water, collapsed between March 14 and 16, according to ice scientist Catherine Walker of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
