South Carolina governor quietly signs anti-trans sports ban into law

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has signed into law a measure banning trans girls and women from playing in school sports consistent with their gender identity. House Bill 4608, slammed by the Human Rights Campaign as a “discriminatory attack on transgender students,” was signed quietly on Monday by the Republican governor, who didn’t even announce it on social media, as he did with bills allowing early voting or granting additional leave for new parents, The Associated Press noted. On Tuesday, he explained in a tweet why he had “proudly” signed the bill into law: “We have to do everything we can to protect the young men and women in our state who choose to pursue athletic competition,” he wrote. Opponents say that the “cruel” bill was created to address a fabricated problem.
