Queen Elizabeth II embodied a sense of stability and continuity, no matter what political scandal was engulfing Westminster or Washington. She was for many the one constant in a world which doesn’t stand still.
She was the only monarch most people in the UK have ever known, reigning for more than 70 years. With her passing, and the change in our Prime Minister happening only a few days earlier, how will our collective sense of self adapt? At a time of great global uncertainty and economic turmoil, what will happen when the spectacle of the centuries old protocol and procedure end and business as usual resumes?
Here in the UK, the idea of stability seems a long way off.
