In the first weeks of July, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ campaign team laid off several staff members, circulated a strategy memo, and began scheduling interviews with mainstream media outlets in what was described in the press as a “shake-up” and “reset” meant to reassure donors and other figures within the Republican Party that his campaign remains viable despite its slowly but steadily declining poll numbers. (Since January, DeSantis’ support among GOP primary voters in RealClearPolitics’ national polling average has fallen from 31 percent to 19 percent.)
According to the memo, the candidate planned to “aggressively” seize media attention with a “bold” messaging strategy while winning voters’ affection by portraying himself as a family man in paid advertisements. (Messaging is more or less the politics word for “talking.
