A House Republican Conference rule stipulates that a member of leadership should step aside if charged with a felony punishable by two or more years in prison.
After ousting a House speaker for the first time in history — and watching another candidate drop out — Republicans are scrambling to rally around a replacement, not an easy task at a time when the party is deeply fractured.
Some members have suggested that former president Donald Trump should pursue the speakership, at least on an interim basis.
