Are The Irradiated Dogs In Chernobyl Evolving?

0

After the Chernobyl nuclear accident, scientists wondered whether the dogs living in the area are undergoing rapid evolution, but the results are complicated.
Could the dogs inside of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) be experiencing rapid evolution due to their exposure to the nuclear radiation left behind after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986? Some scientists think so, but not everyone is convinced.
Of course, this is far from the first or last time that scientists have found themselves scratching their heads and wondering just how radiation in the CEZ might affect the rate of evolution in animals, people, and plants. One reason that the CEZ has become such a hotbed for these theories, though, is because animal and plant life has absolutely exploded since humanity cleared out of the area, and it remains radioactive nearly 40 years later.
As time pressed on, though, scientists have become even more keen to dive deeper into the possible evolutionary implications that might be waiting to be discovered in the CEZ. One 2025 study has taken a deeper look at the possible effect radiation has had on both flora and fauna, offering some insight into the way that these creatures and plants have responded to living in chronic radiation exposure. And while there have been key observations of genetic damages across the board, there also appear to have been some adaptive responses noticed, too. And considering Chernobyl is often considered one of the worst nuclear disasters in the world, scientists have always paid a close eye to the after effects of the disaster.
Additionally, another study from 2024 noted clear observations of genetic differences between the dogs inside and outside of the CEZ, but the researchers say we have only begun to scratch the surface of whether or not we’re actually seeing rapid evolution right before our eyes.Inconclusive information is still a starting point
A lot of the reason why scientists can’t say for sure one way or the other is because most of the data they have gathered is still very inconclusive. While the signs of genetic differences are there, the dogs that they are studying now are not the same dogs that lived in the CEZ when the disaster first took place. They are often several generations beyond, which means they have lived within the radiation exposure all of their lives.
A different study published earlier in 2023 also looked at the demographics of the dogs in the CEZ and found that there were at least 15 different families that shared some kind of ancestral genome. Additionally, that study found that the dogs within Chernobyl City were «genetically distinct» from other dogs in the world, with many «displaying increased intrapopulation genetic similarity and differentiation.» All of this is to say, they appear to be different in some ways from dogs outside of the CEZ.Still up for debate
The exact extent of these differences — and whether or not they are actual evolutionary changes — is still up for debate, given the researcher’s study from 2024, as well as statements by those involved with the study, mention that the genetic differences found in the later generations of Chernobyl dogs does not appear to be attributed to nuclear-driven mutations. This means the genetic changes cannot be directly tied to the chronic radiation exposure that they have lived most of their lives through. However, it’s still hard to say definitively, especially since scientists are looking at dogs that are several generations removed from the original dogs that roamed Chernobyl in the 1980s.
With the oldest nuclear power plant in the world garnering backlash of its own, having a deeper understanding of how radiation exposure can drive evolution will prove useful to knowing more about the long-term effects on both animals and plants. Hopefully scientists will dig even deeper and truly determine whether or not dogs in the CEZ are experiencing rapid evolution and how that might affect other animals and plants should other disasters like this strike.

Samsung Refuses to Give Up on Glasses-Free 3D Gaming Monitors

0

Samsung’s got a whole family of new Odyssey gaming monitors, including a 32-inch 6K Odyssey 3D.
You know CES is right around the corner when tech companies announce a whole bunch of new TVs and monitors. Ahead of CES 2026, Samsung has dropped details on five new Odyssey gaming monitors, each worth considering if you’re looking for certain features to up your immersion level.
Chief among the family of new monitors is the new G90XH 32-inch Odyssey 3D. This is a much larger and higher-resolution version of the G90XF 27-inch glasses-free 3D gaming monitor that Gizmodo’s Kyle Barr reviewed back in May. This new model has a higher 6K resolution (6,144 x 3,456), compared to the previous 4K. For stereoscopic 3D gaming, more pixels means increased sharpness since the resolution is essentially halved in order to produce the pop-out effect. This 6K glasses-free gaming monitor is a world’s first, according to Samsung.
Other notable specs on the new Odyssey 3D monitor include a 165Hz refresh rate that can be “boosted to 330Hz through Dual Mode” and a 1ms Gray-to-Gray (GtG) response time. Of course, our big concern is game support. Only 14 games could be played with glasses-free 3D on the 27-incher, and it couldn’t play 3D movies. It’s unlikely the library of supported games has expanded significantly in seven months.
Then, there’s the new Odyssey G6 (G60H). Samsung is also touting another world’s first record: a 1,040Hz refresh rate… with “Dual Mode. That’s more than double the 500Hz refresh rate on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G660SF, which was also announced in May. Natively, the new Odyssey G6 tops out at a 600Hz refresh rate at QHD resolution (2,560 x 1,440).
Finally, there are three versions of the new Odyssey G8 gaming monitors. There’s the G80HS, which is a 32-inch display with 6K resolution (6,144 x 3,456). It’s got the same specs as the 6K Odyssey 3D sans the glasses-free 3D aspect. The G80HF is a 27-inch version with higher refresh rates: 180Hz native and 360Hz in Dual Mode. The G80SH is the Odyssey OLED G8, which is a 32-inch monitor with 4K resolution (3,240 x 2,160) and uses QD-OLED for inkier black. It’s also capable of reaching a 240Hz refresh rate.No pricing info yet
Unsurprisingly, Samsung hasn’t shared any pricing or release information on any of its new Odyssey gaming monitors. Hopefully, we find out more at CES 2026 when we can actually lay our eyeballs on the screens.

This clever car charger delivers fast charging while using wired Android Auto & CarPlay [Gallery]

As crucial as Android Auto and CarPlay have become to daily driving, the core problem remains. Wired connections charge your phone slowly, and wireless drains your battery quickly. That’s where the “PDFriender” steps in as a clever little solution.
The “PDFriender 2Pad” is a 65W car charger at its core, plugging into your car’s power port and charging up your phone at full speed as you’d expect from any car charger. What makes this one special is that, on top of full-speed charging, it lets you use wired Android Auto and CarPlay.
The first of the two USB-C ports is the one that connects to your phone, with the other being used to connect to your car.
When both are in use, the signal from your car is transferred from one port to the other, just combined with speedy charging. It’s a simple idea, but one that’s not been so elegant to find so far.
In practice, even on this early prototype I’ve been using, it works really well. I tried this out with my Nothing Phone (3) and my Galaxy Z Fold 7, and it does exactly what it promises. The phone gets full-speed charging – I clocked it at around 25W when it was already at 80% capacity, which is when charging rates tend to slow down – while acting just like a totally normal wired Android Auto experience. It connects instantly and the connection has been completely stable. It supports CarPlay too if you’re using an iPhone. The company designing the device tells me that it is fully USB-PD compliant.
Also, the little face hidden in the design is pretty stinking cute.
There is an obvious question, though, and that’s why you’d want something like this over a wireless Android Auto or CarPlay adapter.
Personally, I’ve been a big fan of these adapters in the past few years, to the point where plugging in my phone while driving almost feels a little weird. But there are some marked benefits to this sort of experience. Over the standard wired experience, an adapter like this means you’re going from charging at a crawl to a quick top-up. But compared to a wireless adapter, you’re also taking some strain off of your device. You could easily connect wirelessly and plug into a dedicated fast charger, but since wireless connections inevitably make your device run warm, combining that with fast charging only makes matters worse.
That’s the primary benefit, really, just making the whole experience run with a bit less strain. Another benefit I noticed was just how much faster it connected compared to those wireless adapters. They work great, don’t get me wrong, but I’d forgotten just how instant Android Auto and CarPlay could be until I got back to testing this out. Wired also obviously cuts out those occasional hiccups you’ll inevitably run into with wireless.
As it stands today, the “PDFriender 2Pad” is just a prototype, with production happening sometime in 2026. The goal, I’m told, is to launch it for around the same price as your typical wireless adapter, with initial runs probably costing in the ballpark of €50 ($60) or so. I’m looking forward to seeing the final product, too, and hopeful it’ll address the very few little nitpicks I have about the prototype, such as the lack of indication on which port is used for what. They aren’t interchangeable, with the left side being used for the phone connection and the right side used for the car.
If you’re interested in a device like this, you can register your interest on the company’s website. Meanwhile, the same core tech exists in the “TreePod,” a product from the same company, which acts as a middleman between your phone, car, and a dedicated car charger. The end functionality isn’t all that different, but it’s obviously not as elegant as the “2Pad” will be.

‘Bloodthirsty ISIS savages’: Republicans praise Trump’s strike on terrorists in Nigeria

‘Decisive strikes will save lives & protected religious freedom’
Republican lawmakers have delivered praise for strikes ordered by President Donald Trump on ISIS extremists and terrorists in Nigeria.
Trump long has expressed concern about the terrorists’ slaughter of Christians in that nation, and ordered strikes on Christmas Day that hit at the network of hate there.
“Decisive” was how several GOP lawmakers described the move.
Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., said, “Today, in coordination with the Nigerian government, President Trump and the U.S. Military took decisive action to protect Christians from radical Islamists in Nigeria. The Congressional Delegation I led to Nigeria this past weekend provided insight that some attitudes inside the Nigerian Government are beginning to turn in favor of protecting Christians — in addition to taking actions against those terrorizing Christians and moderate Muslims. As I have said previously, the U.S. was too late in Rwanda and too late in South Sudan. This strike demonstrates the United States is taking the targeted killings in Nigeria seriously.”

The Hill reported Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.Va., added, “President Trump has been clear that the killing of Christians in Nigeria must end. As I stated at the outset: Do not test President Trump’s resolved in this matter. Tonight’s strike in coordination with the Nigerian government is just the first step to ending the slaughter of Christians and the security crisis affecting all Nigerians.”
Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., charged that ISIS was guilty of “conducting genocide against Christians.”
WND reported when the strikes were confirmed that Trump said, “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries! I have previously warned these Terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was.
“The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues.”
Several weeks ago Trump threatened “guns a-blazing” if the terrorism continued.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed,” Trump said in November. “Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern, that’s a legal definition.
“When the Christians or any such group is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria – 3,100 vs. 4,476 worldwide, what horrible numbers – something has to be done.”

ISWAP, obecny też w sąsiednich Nigrze, Czadzie i Kamerunie, m.in. otwarcie atakuje nigeryjskie wojska i inne formacje państwowe.

The Best Robot Mops for 2026

0

Retire your old mop and bucket. The top robot mops we’ve tested keep your floors squeaky clean with little effort on your part.
Thanks to robot mops, you no longer need to exert any elbow grease to have a shiny floor. Like robot vacuums, you can now find a dizzying variety of robot mops with a range of features and prices. At PCMag, we’ve been reviewing autonomous floor scrubbers since these devices first gained popularity more than a decade ago, so you’ve come to the right place when searching for the best robot mop for your home. The Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop earns our highest recommendation for its versatility, scrubbing power, and self-maintenance abilities. That said, if you want to save money or you’re looking for a different set of features, we have a variety of models on this list to help you find the best robot mop for your needs and budget. Why We Picked It
The Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni features an innovative mop design, similar to a paint roller, that scrubs your floors with 4,000Pa of pressure while spinning at 200rpm. The relatively unique mop keeps itself clean as it works, as a scraper whisks away the dirty water while it spins, and 16 nozzles keep it doused with fresh water and cleaning solution. It can also keep your floors clear of dust and pet hair, with 18,000Pa of vacuum suction power. It can lift its mop over the carpet, or you can set it to vacuum the carpet first before wetting its mop. When back at the base, it empties its own dustbin and washes and dries its own mop to prepare for the next run. Who It’s For
People who want it all: If you don’t want to put any effort toward cleaning your floors, and you’re willing to pay for that convenience, the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni should be at the top of your list thanks to its effective roller mop, strong suction power, and useful self-maintenance features.
Homes with a mix of flooring types: With excellent sweeping and scrubbing performance, it’s a top choice for homes with a mix of carpet and hard flooring. It navigates efficiently, making it a good fit for large homes with extensive floor space.
Pet owners: The Deebot X8 thoroughly removes pet hair without tangles, making it an ideal choice for those with furry roommates. Moreover, it applies sufficient pressure with its mop to remove grime from hard flooring, and the roller design helps limit cross-contamination. Why We Picked It
Made by one of the most respected names in the robotic floor cleaner market, the iRobot Braava Jet m6 is among the best standalone robot mops. When mopping, the M6 sprays a specific area with a cleaning solution (or plain water) and goes over it a few times before moving on and repeating the process, picking up a lot more dirt and grime than we expected. It can detect and automatically avoid carpeting, and it rarely gets stuck. Moreover, it’s easy to use, supports app and voice control, and maps out your home for targeted room cleaning.Who It’s For
Homes with mostly hard floors: The Braava Jet m6 is an excellent standalone robot mop for homes with mostly hardwood, laminate, or tile flooring. It doesn’t vacuum, but it thoroughly scrubs hard floors. With its long battery life and the ability to cover up to 1,000 square feet on a single charge, the m6 is suitable for both apartments and larger homes.
Roomba fans: This makes a nice addition to your cleaning repertoire if you already own an iRobot Roomba i, j, or s series robot vacuum. You can link them in the app and configure the mop to start a run once the vacuum finishes cleaning your floors. Why We Picked It
The TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus is priced below $300 and still checks all the right boxes in terms of key features to make your life easier. It features LiDAR navigation, which helps it move efficiently through your home. After it vacuums, it empties its dirt into a bag in its base station. Both of those features, in particular, are tough to find for this price. The RV30 Max Plus is also a hybrid vacuum and mop. A washable mop pad sticks onto a hard plate that snaps onto the dustbin. Put it in place, fill the labeled compartment in the dustbin with water, and the RV30 is ready to mop. Thanks to its mapping capabilities, you can even dictate which floors need mopping and which don’t.Who It’s For
Budget shoppers: If you don’t need anything particularly fancy, it’s hard to go wrong with the sheer value of the Tapo RV30 Max Plus. It’s easy to use, vacuums and mops well, navigates efficiently, and even empties its own dustbin. Its mix of features makes it a steal at its bargain-friendly price.
First-time buyers: If you’re not sure how much you’ll use a robot vacuum, try this one out. It nails the basics without breaking your wallet. Why We Picked It
The Dreame X30 Ultra can automatically detach its mop pads to avoid dragging them over your high-pile rugs and reattach them when necessary. Like other premium 2-in-1s, it can lift its mopping pads out of the way when vacuuming over low-pile carpet for efficient double-duty runs. When mopping, it can extend its mop pads into corners and under cabinets for a more thorough cleaning. After a run, the base station will empty the robot’s dustbin, wash the mop pads, dry them, and wash its basin. The base also automatically refills the robot’s internal tank with fresh water and adds a dose of detergent, making it ready for the next job.Who It’s For
Low-maintenance users: The Dreame X30 automatically empties its own dustbin, washes and dries its own mops, and even washes its own docking station basin, maximizing the time between manual interventions needed to keep it running smoothly.
Homes with high-end carpet: The Dreame X30 Ultra is a top choice if you want a hands-off hybrid and are willing to pay a premium to avoid any contact between the mop pads and your carpet. It can remove and reattach its own mop pads based on the flooring type to minimize cross-contamination, making it one of the best premium 2-in-1 models for those with medium- or high-pile carpets that cannot get wet.Why We Picked It
The Qrevo Curv uses spinning mop pads to great effect. Both the mop pads and the side brush extend outward, helping it clean tight spots along walls and in corners where some other robots miss. The Curv also stands out for its ability to lift itself over small thresholds, which can help it avoid getting stuck and traverse multi-tiered floor plans. Otherwise, the Curv offers all the features you’d expect from a high-end hybrid, including a camera that serves double duty as a security robot, a self-emptying base station that washes and dries the mop pads, and a stylish design. Who It’s For
Homes with multi-tiered floors: The Roborock Qrevo Curv is a top premium 2-in-1 model for homes with tall thresholds and/or multi-level floors. Each of the robot’s two main side wheels can independently raise its body up to 0.4 inches off the ground. This lets the robot clear obstacles that others might get stuck on and allows it to climb thresholds up to 1.6 inches tall.
Allergy sufferers: Dust and pet hair tend to collect along walls and in corners, and the Curv is particularly adept at cleaning those areas. It also empties its own dustbin, so you can avoid coming into contact with the particles. It even mops well enough to remove the grime your pet leaves behind. Why We Picked It
The Tapo RV20 vacuums and mops surprisingly well for its affordable price. A washable mop pad sticks to a hard plate that snaps to the bottom of the robot’s dustbin. Because it navigates with LiDAR embedded in the front of the vacuum, rather than on top, it can fit under low-profile furniture to capture dust bunnies and polish floors. App-based smarts allow it to avoid carpeted rooms in mop mode, and voice controls through Alexa and Google Assistant allow you to send it to clean where needed. Who It’s For
Homes with low-profile furniture: Since the Tapo RV20 has its LiDAR sensor tucked into its body, it stands a diminutive 3.2 inches tall, allowing it to traverse where many competitors can’t, like under your bed or couch.
Budget shoppers: The most affordable vacuum on this list, the Tapo RV20 is a good option if you need to pinch pennies. It vacuums, mops, and navigates well, and even responds to voice commands through compatible devices. It’s a bargain-friendly hybrid that doesn’t cut corners on cleaning performance. Why We Picked It
One of the few models with a roller mop design, the Eufy Omni E28 offers serious scrubbing power. The roller mop cleans itself as it works, limiting cross-contamination, and the base station does a good job of giving it a thorough wash between runs. The E28 is also a versatile hybrid model, featuring an attached handheld deep cleaner that removes stains from both carpet and upholstery. It also offers a lofty 20,000Pa of suction, as well as app controls and integrations with Alexa or Google Assistant for voice controls. Who It’s For
Parents and pet owners: The Eufy E28’s standout feature is its FlexiOne deep cleaner, a portable handheld device meant for tackling wet messes and set-in stains on carpet and furniture, making it a strong choice for homes with little hands and paws. If the deep cleaner appeals to you, the Eufy Omni E28 backs up its unique hybrid design with excellent mopping performance. Which Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo Works Best?
Every robot mop has a few things in common. They generally come with reservoirs that need to be filled with water or cleaning solution, microfiber cloths that scrub your floors and pick up dirt, and sensors to help them navigate autonomously around your furniture.
Robot mops generally come in one of two flavors: single-purpose or hybrid. Single-purpose mops, like the iRobot Braava Jet m6, can’t vacuum your floors. Some can, however, perform a dry sweep to clear the area before they start mopping.
Hybrid models, as you might expect, can mop and vacuum. They typically have attachments for microfiber cloths that wipe or scrub your floors as the robot runs around your home. Some feature an interchangeable dustbin and water tank and don’t require any presoaking before cleaning.
Hybrid models are typically more expensive, but they also offer features such as app control via your phone, voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and even interactivity with other smart home devices.
In our reviews, we note which models are hybrids and test their functionality accordingly. How We Test Robot Mops
We test robot mops in our actual homes, keeping the following criteria in mind: battery life, navigation, ease of setup and operation, and performance.
The primary purpose of robotic cleaners is to automate the cleaning process for you. Having to intervene defeats the purpose. To that end, we look to see whether the robot can handle different floor types, such as tile and wood, with equal ease. We also check to see if it avoids textiles like rugs and carpeting or if it comes with peripheral features like virtual walls (or app controls) to make this easier.
Battery life is also important; the size of your home determines what is sufficient. The longer the robot mop can run on one charge, the better it is for larger homes. We consider a battery life of 60 minutes to be sufficient for small homes and apartments; ideally, we would like to see results in the 90-minute range. We fully charge the robot to test battery life before running a cleaning cycle. We then let it run for as long as it takes to completely drain the battery.
Setup is another factor we consider. Most involve charging your robot and filling up water tanks. Once again, you want these processes to be as simple as possible. And although not every robot mop works with an app, hybrid models often do. In these instances, we assess the app’s intuitiveness and the benefits it offers.
We then test how well a robot mop cleans in real-life conditions. We consider factors such as whether it uses a cleaning solution or just water. We see how well it tackles dry stains versus wet on various surfaces. We also ensure that it doesn’t scuff tile or wood, and at the end of every cleaning session, we inspect the microfiber cloth to assess its level of dirtiness.
Finally, we put the mop through a stress test. We put 0.25 ounces of raspberry jelly on a single spot on the floor in a closed room and see what happens. Of course, we note whether the mop is powerful enough to remove the stain, but we also let you know if it spreads sticky residue or seeds elsewhere on the floor. Are Robot Mops Worth It?
As with robot vacuums, robot mops do a sufficient job of keeping your floors clean, but they aren’t complete substitutes for a little elbow grease. They’re great for maintenance and fresh spills. Deep-set stains, however, still likely require some manual scrubbing.
