Rock band critical of Putin is detained in Thailand, fearful of deportation to Russia

0

Members of a rock band that has been critical of Moscow’s war in Ukraine remained locked up Tuesday in a Thai immigration jail, fearful that they could be deported to Russia as a reported plan to let them fly to safety in Israel was apparently suspended.
The progressive rock band Bi-2 said on Facebook that it had information that intervention from Russian diplomats caused the plan to be scuttled, even though tickets had already been purchased for their flight.
“The group participants remain detained at the immigration center in a shared cell with 80 people,” the post said. It said they declined to meet with the Russian consul. The Russian press agency RIA Novosti said the refusal was confirmed by Ilya Ilyin, head of the Russian Embassy’s consular section.
The group later said on the Telegram messaging app that its singer, Yegor Bortnik, whose stage name is Lyova, boarded a flight for Israel late Tuesday, but the other members remained in the jail.
The seven band members were arrested last Thursday after playing a concert on the southern resort island of Phuket, reportedly for not having proper working papers. On Facebook, they said all their concerts “are held in accordance with local laws and practices.” Phuket is a popular destination for Russian expats and tourists. After paying a fine, the band members were sent to the Immigration Detention Center in Bangkok.
The detained musicians “include Russian citizens as well as dual nationals of Russia and other countries, including Israel and Australia,” the group Human Rights Watch said in a statement Tuesday. Those holding only Russian citizenship are thought to be most at risk.
“The Thai authorities should immediately release the detained members of Bi-2 and allow them to go on their way,” said Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Under no circumstances should they be deported to Russia, where they could face arrest or worse for their outspoken criticisms of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war in Ukraine.”
“It is not known if the Russian authorities have sought the band members’ forcible return to Russia,” Human Rights Watch said. “However, amid repression in Russia reaching new heights, Russian authorities have used transnational repression — abuses committed against nationals beyond a government’s jurisdiction — to target activists and government critics abroad with violence and other unlawful actions.”
Self-exiled Russian opposition politician and a friend of Bi-2, Dmitry Gudkov, told the AP that he had been in touch with lawyers and diplomats in an attempt to secure the band’s release and suggested that pressure to detain and deport them came directly from the Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Russia, Gudkov said, needs an “evocative story to show that they will catch any critic abroad. This is all happening in the run-up to (Russia‘s presidential election), and it’s clear that they want to shut everyone up, and that’s why there’s intense pressure going on.”
Russia‘s ambassador to Thailand Yevgeny Tomikhin said Russian diplomats were not responsible for the group’s detention.
“It’s not our practice to dictate to anyone. Americans can do this. We don’t behave like that and don’t make such requests,” Tomikhin was quoted as telling the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.
There have been no public statements from Thai officials on the situation.
Bi-2 has 1.01 million subscribers to its YouTube channel and 376,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
Andrei Lugovoi, a member of the lower house of Russia‘s parliament, called the band members “scum” for their criticism of Russia‘s military operations in Ukraine.
“Let the guys get ready: soon they will be playing and singing on spoons and on metal plates, tap dancing in front of their cellmates,” Lugovoi said on Telegram. “Personally, I would be very happy to see this.”
Britain has accused Lugovoi of involvement in the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, who died in London in 2006 after being poisoned with tea laced with radioactive polonium-210.

Coolangatta.

Amazon Prime Video

Excellent original programs and live sports
Even if you cut the cord, you can keep current with the latest TV series and movies by subscribing to one or more video streaming services. Amazon Prime Video offers a vast library of quality original content and a decent collection of movies and TV shows. Subscribers also have the option to download content for offline viewing and to watch 4K titles. On top of that, Amazon hosts an impressive catalog that’s available for rent or purchase. However, it doesn’t have as many high-quality shows as top rival services such as Netflix, and it continues to lose third-party content.Amazon Prime Video’s Movies and TV Shows
Although Amazon Video began as a place to purchase and watch TV shows and movies, it eventually embraced the world of unlimited, buffet-style streaming for a single monthly fee. Take, for example, Amazon’s growing library of excellent original content, such as Bosch, The Boys, Catastrophe, Electric Dreams, Flack, Fleabag, Good Omens, Hanna, Homecoming, Hunters, Invincible, Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Patriot, Tales From The Loop, Undone, Upload, Utopia, and The Wheel of Time.
In addition, Amazon saved The Expanse from cancellation, and it’s working on adaptations of acclaimed video games Disco Elysium and Fallout. Amazon’s highest-profile original show by far, though, is the recent epic fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The list of originals continues to grow, and while it’s not as large as Netflix’s or Max’s (formerly HBO Max) collection, many of the shows are on par, quality-wise. Prime Video’s original shows also edge out Hulu’s, which feels like a secondary adult alternative to Disney+.
You get more than just Amazon’s originals with Amazon Prime Video, including The Americans, Chuck, Burn Notice, Hannibal, and Mr. Robot at no additional cost. Note that Prime Video has already lost shows, such as Justified, Veronica Mars, and The X-Files, to Hulu. Other HBO and NBC shows are leaving soon, too. Amazon Prime Video has the most shows of any streaming service, but when you filter for quality, Netflix and Hulu are better options.
Prime Video’s library also includes a rotating library of popular movies, plus a surprising number of classic films. Like Netflix, it also creates original movies, such as Blow the Man Down, The Big Sick, Honey Boy, Manchester by the Sea, My Spy, The Report, Troop Zero, and The Vast of Night. Many of these movies have not fared as well as Netflix’s The Irishman, El Camino, or Roma, but Sound of Metal won an Academy Award. Prime Video has more movies than any other service, but when you filter for quality, its numbers are in line with Netflix’s. Of course, if you love B movies (and even C and D movies), you may disagree! Amazon bought MGM for $8.45 billion, however, which has boosted the movie library here and on MGM+.
Dedicated movie streaming services tend to offer more curated selections of titles with more supporting content. The Criterion Channel and Mubi are both excellent options for cinephiles.Documentaries on Amazon Prime Video
Amazon has cranked out original documentaries over the years; examples include Generation Wealth, Gimme Danger, One Child Nation, and Time. For pure entertainment, check out Hamilton: One Shot to Broadway and The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia, which chronicles the life and times of an eccentric West Virginia family.
All In: The Fight for Democracy is a documentary about voter suppression, while Citizenfour covers NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Lower-budget documentaries about spirituality and non-traditional medicine, such as Food as Medicine, round out its library. Anime on Amazon Prime Video
The addition of the smash hit Invincible notwithstanding, Amazon Prime Video falters when it comes to anime and cartoons, though it has a good range of animated kids’ shows and some anime titles. Crunchyroll is our Editors’ Choice for watching anime, thanks in part to its massive library of series and films, though Hulu and Netflix offer some anime titles, too. In terms of other animated shows, Netflix leads the pack with originals such as Bojack Horseman and Matt Groening’s Disenchantment. Hulu is another good option for animated shows that premier on traditional cable networks.
Our feature on everything arriving on Prime Video can help you keep up with changes to the library.Live Sports on Prime Video
In addition to on-demand content, Prime Video is the exclusive broadcaster of Thursday Night Football games. That means die-hard football fans must subscribe to Prime Video in addition to one of several other NFL streaming services; no longer will a single live TV service cover all your gridiron needs.
Amazon has streamed regular-season WNBA games, as well as the Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game. For New York residents, the service began broadcasting select Yankees baseball games, too. Both initiatives hint at Prime Video’s growing live sports ambitions. For now, ESPN+ is still a better sports streaming service in this price range, because of its extensive live coverage of college and international sports.
Amazon lets subscribers add sports-centric channels, such as MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, and PGA Tour Live to their subscription, too. Of course, each of these channels adds a significant cost to your monthly or annual subscription.
Some other primarily on-demand services also stream live sports or have begun to recently. For instance, Paramount+ gets you access to all national sports events that air on CBS, and Peacock’s premium tiers include Premier League and IndyCar coverage. Max features live MLB, NBA, and NHL games.
How Much Does Amazon Prime Video Cost?
There are two ways to get access to Amazon’s video content: a standalone Prime Video subscription or an Amazon Prime subscription. A Prime Video subscription costs $8.99 per month and includes access to Amazon’s streaming video library. Alternatively, you can pay $14.99 per month (or $139 per year) for an Amazon Prime subscription that includes Prime Video, as well as other perks such as free two-day (and same-day, when available) shipping, music streaming via Amazon Music Prime, a Twitch Prime membership, and discounts at Whole Foods. Both tiers give you access to the same content. Amazon’s Prime Day events are always just around the corner, which includes deals for Prime subscribers, too; check out our Prime Day coverage to stay up to date.
If you no longer want or need your subscription, follow our instructions on how to cancel your Amazon Prime account. This will take away your access to Prime Video, as well.
Students can sign up for an Amazon Prime subscription at a discounted rate of $7.49 per month or $69 per year. This plan includes all the perks of the regular Amazon Prime subscription, including Prime Video and Music (not to be confused with Amazon Music Unlimited).
Like many other video streaming services, Amazon Prime Video also lets you add subscriptions to different content providers to your account for a monthly fee. Options include Cinemax ($9.99), PBS Documentaries ($3.99), and Starz ($8.99). Prime Channels are not available for standalone Prime Video subscribers; you need a full Amazon Prime account to add this content.
A standard Amazon Prime Video subscription now includes commercials. To remove ads, you must pay an additional $3 per month, which is in line with many other recent streaming price hikes. This only applies to streaming, not rentals or purchases.
For comparison, Netflix’s cheapest plan with ad-free HD streaming is $15.49 per month. Hulu’s most affordable on-demand streaming plan is $7.99 per month, but if you want an ad-free experience, the price jumps to $17.99 per month. Max and Paramount+ have new ad-supported plans, which start at $9.99 per month and $5.99 per month, respectively. The top tier Max and Paramount+ plans cost $19.99 per month and $11.99 per month, respectively. Disney+ charges $7.99 per month with ads and $13.99 per month without.
You don’t need to pay anything for your video streaming entertainment. Our roundup of the best free video streaming services includes options for watching popular shows and movies. Our top pick for that category is Tubi. NBC’s Peacock is another affordable option for mainstream titles, though you now need to pay $5.99 per month to see anything it offers.
All of these are considerably cheaper than cable-replacement-type services such as Sling TV (starting at $40 per month) and Hulu + Live TV ($76.99 per month).
Amazon Prime Video works on a web browser, Android and iOS devices, media streaming devices (including Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, and Roku), game consoles (PlayStation and Xbox), and smart TVs. Prime Video also has a Windows 10 app, something Netflix and Hulu do, too. The app supports offline downloads and the IMDb-powered X-Ray panel for streaming content (a feature we’ll discuss later).
With Prime Video, you can stream up to three titles simultaneously from the same account. Most other video streaming services support more concurrent streams. BritBox, for example, supports five. Other than Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, and Netflix also offer 4K and HDR content. Fubo also streams select live programming in 4K.
Alternatively, Amazon also offers an entirely free streaming service called Freevee. Previously known as IMDb TV, Amazon Freevee is an ad-supported free service housed within the larger Prime Video ecosystem. It has a rotating selection of hit movies and TV shows, from Logan to Mad Men. It even features spin-offs of original Prime Video shows, like Bosch: Legacy, along with brand new shows, like Primo.Renting and Buying Videos From Amazon
Amazon Prime Video offers an advantage over Netflix and Hulu with its option to rent or buy TV shows and movies outright, similar to iTunes, Google Play Movies and TV Shows, and the Microsoft Store’s Movies & TV section for Windows 10 and Xbox. Notably buying and renting are your only options for some content. Keep in mind that purchases and rentals come with restrictions.
Once you purchase a video on Prime Video, you can stream it as many times as you want and download it on up to four compatible devices. For rentals, the three-video-stream limit remains, but Amazon does not let you stream the same rental to more than one device simultaneously. If you watch a downloaded rental video on one device, you can still watch it on another (though not simultaneously). You typically get 30 days to download or start streaming a rental, but after you do, you usually have 48 hours to finish watching it. You can read all of the specific details on Amazon’s Video Usage Rules support page.
Amazon prioritizes movies and TV shows that are included with Prime, so your best bet is to specifically search for the content you want to watch or navigate directly to the Rent or Buy section. Renting a movie typically costs between $2.99 and $5.99, while buying it runs anywhere from $7.99 to $19.99, depending on how recent it is and the quality (SD or HD). Sometimes, however, the SD and HD options cost the same.
In terms of pricing, Amazon Prime Video is in line with its competitors for both buying and renting movies. For example, Ford v Ferrari (in HD) costs $19.99 to purchase. Google Play, iTunes, and the Microsoft Store charge the same price. However, the iTunes and Google Play versions are in 4K and support HDR. Some movies are free if you subscribe to a channel add-on that includes it. In the case of Ford v Ferrari, subscribers to the HBO add-on watch the movie for free.
The story is pretty much the same when it comes to TV shows, though not all TV shows are purchasable outright. Individual episodes typically cost between $1.99 and $3.99, with seasons running anywhere from $22.99 to $29.99. We compared prices for an HD episode from season 3 of Westworld across the four platforms. Each service charges $3.99 per episode and around $29 for the entire season. Amazon organizes all the content you rent or buy in the Your Video Library section, which is separate from the Your Videos section, which collects streaming content.Prime Video Interface
One of Amazon’s biggest issues (not unique to its video services) is that it shoehorns all its services into the same interface. Amazon Prime Video, like all of Amazon’s other services, lives in the drop-down to the left of the main search bar. Amazon should create a separate site solely dedicated to its video services or at least organize everything better. That said, the interface’s organization has improved substantially over time.
The video service’s homepage can’t match the minimal aesthetic of Max or Netflix, but it looks fine. At the very top, users can select between the following menu items: Home, Free to Me, Store, Channels, Categories, My Stuff, and Watch Party. Right below that, Amazon Video highlights a few notable shows or movies available for streaming and then organizes everything else in horizontally scrolling lists, such as Watch Next, TV Shows We Think You’ll Like, and Blockbuster Movies, going down the rest of the page. The Categories section is particularly useful for finding new releases, originals, and 4K UHD content. There’s also a Prime Video Explorer tool for finding additional recommendations.
If you can’t find something to watch on the homepage, you can use the search bar up top to find specific content by title, genre, release date, or channel. If you see something that interests you, you can start streaming immediately (provided it is available for Prime Video) or add it to your watchlist. Your watchlist is just an easy way to keep track of the shows and movies you want to revisit at a later time.
Clicking a movie or TV show link opens a page showing the user rating, runtime, release date, and other pertinent information. If you’re on a TV show page, you can click the Preview button to watch a snippet; movie pages let you watch a trailer. One advantage that Amazon Video offers over Netflix is user reviews. Mubi and Shudder also let you chime in about shows and movies. Like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video gives recommendations based on the content you watch.
We particularly like Prime Video’s Now Playing screen, as it looks clean and lays out the controls intuitively. In addition to the standard play, rewind, and forward buttons, Amazon Prime Video also implements subtitle and streaming quality options on the screen. However, Amazon’s biggest draw—and something no other streaming service I’ve tested currently offers—is its X-Ray feature (powered by IMDb). This transparent overlay populates with useful information on the characters and actors currently in a scene, any soundtrack titles, as well as relevant show notes (such as continuity errors and important cultural references). Most shows get a Skip Intro button as well, a feature that Netflix made popular. Check out our feature on other Prime Video tips and tricks you might not have known about.Prime Video on Mobile
We downloaded Amazon’s Prime Video app on an Android 11 device to test the mobile experience. Note that Amazon does not offer a separate Amazon Video app: all video accounts use the Prime Video app. We appreciate that Amazon built a separate app for the video experience, since wedging it into the Amazon shopping app would make things much less manageable.
The interface looks identical to that of the website, albeit scaled down for a mobile screen. The app appears similar to many other video streaming apps, notably Netflix and HBO Now, with a dark background and vivid content thumbnails. Across the top, the app displays the following menu options: Home, Originals, TV, Movies, and Kids. There’s a new bottom menu, too, for navigating between the Store, Channels, Search, and My Stuff sections. Gone is the overburdened left-hand menu. Tapping on a show or movie brings you to a details page where you can view a show summary and read user ratings and reviews.
The app does give users a fair amount of control over the service, with settings for stream and download quality, parental control options, a list of registered devices, as well as the ability to clear video search history. Prime members (not Amazon Video subscribers) can also manage Amazon Channels subscriptions from the app.
Streaming on a mobile device is quick and stable. We downloaded a 44-minute episode of The Expanse in the highest quality in just under a minute and a half. If you have the time and storage space, the app includes an option for downloading an entire season of a show all at once. For streaming or downloading on a mobile device, make sure that you are on a Wi-Fi connection or have an unlimited data plan; one hour of content equates to about 1.8GB of data.Prime Video Accessibility and Parental Controls
Audio descriptions are one step above regular dialogue-based closed captioning (CC). You can search specifically for Amazon’s Movies and TV Shows with Audio Descriptions to find compatible content. This search returns more than 1,000 results at the time of publishing. Most of Amazon’s Original programming includes audio descriptions, and we hope that it continues to support and implement these enhancements. Apple TV+, Disney+, Max, and Netflix also support audio descriptions.
Prime Video lets you adjust the CC settings directly from the video player. You can change the font size and color of the text. Acorn TV also allows these customization options from the playback screen.
In terms of parental controls, you can require a PIN for any purchases, as well as restrict streaming by user age. You can designate specific accounts as a Kids profile, too. Netflix, Disney+, and Max also include top-notch parental control options.Prime Video Playback
We did not experience any issues streaming over a home Ethernet connection (200Mbps download speed). Although Prime Video may take a couple of seconds to ramp up to full quality, the quality stays consistent once it does. The service is also pretty accurate at saving your progress through a video in case you get disconnected or need to resume watching later.
Even if you choose to upgrade to the ad-free tier, Amazon Prime Video still advertises in-house content at the beginning of a show or movie, similar to the way Max does. You can easily skip these ads, or if you’re interested in the show, add it to your watchlist directly.
Amazon Prime Video now lets you co-watch Prime Video content with up to 100 people, provided they all have an account and are located in the US. The service also finally brought support for multiple viewing profiles to subscribers in the US. Watch Party is also now available on more devices, from desktop browsers to mobile apps, Roku streaming boxes, and video game consoles.

And check out our recommended streaming video guides if you don’t know what to watch. Can You Watch Prime Video With a VPN?
A virtual private network (VPN) is an important tool for protecting your privacy online. Unfortunately, some video streaming services, such as Prime Video, make it difficult, if not impossible, to stream content while connected to a VPN. This policy could be due to content licensing deals, as many shows are restricted to viewers in specific countries. Amazon Prime Video did not work after we connected our test mobile and device desktop to US-based Mullvad VPN servers.
You could try to find a VPN that works with all the services you subscribe to, but even if you do, this does not guarantee that everything will work together in the future. Many video streaming services continue to close down the loopholes that VPNs currently rely on to avoid being blocked. Note that some VPNs do offer dedicated streaming servers, which may be more reliable for this purpose.A Complete Video Streaming Package
Amazon Prime Video offers many entertaining originals at a reasonable price, albeit now with ads, and it continues to introduce new streaming features. Additionally, Prime Video is available on nearly every platform you can name, and it lets you purchase or rent shows and movies that aren’t part of its subscription. The main drawback is that the service does not have as many high-quality shows as our top picks and stands to lose more content to competitors. Netflix is our Editors’ Choice winner for on-demand video streaming, since it has the best library of originals and movies. Hulu is a great value for its combination of a vast on-demand library and live TV capabilities. And YouTube TV impresses with intuitive interfaces and an excellent range of channels.

Elon Musk says the first human has received an implant from Neuralink

0

The device is about the size of a large coin and is designed to be implanted in the skull, with ultra-thin wires going directly into the brain.
According to Elon Musk, the first human received an implant from his computer-brain interface company Neuralink over the weekend.
In a Monday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Musk said that the patient received the implant the day prior and was “recovering well.” He added that “initial results show promising neuron spike detection.”
The billionaire, who co-founded Neuralink, did not provide additional details about the patient. When Neuralink announced in September that it would begin recruiting people, the company said it was searching for individuals with quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Neuralink is one of many groups working on linking the nervous system to computers, efforts aimed at helping treat brain disorders, overcoming brain injuries and other applications. There are more than 40 brain computer interface trials underway, according to clinicaltrials.gov.
Neuralink reposted Musk’s Monday post on X, but did not publish any additional statements acknowledging the human implant. The company did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ requests for comment Tuesday.
Neuralink previously announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had approved its “investigational device exemption,” which generally allows a sponsor to begin a clinical study “in patients who fit the inclusion criteria,” the FDA said Tuesday. The agency pointed out that it can’t confirm or disclose information about a particular study.
Neuralink’s device is about the size of a large coin and is designed to be implanted in the skull, with ultra-thin wires going directly into the brain. In its September announcement, Neuralink said the wires would be surgically placed in a region of the brain that controls movement intention. The initial goal of the so-called brain computer interface is to give people the ability to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.
In a separate Monday post on X, Musk said that the first Neuralink product is called “Telepathy” — which, he said, will enable users to control their phones or computers “just by thinking.” He added that intial users would be those who have lost use of their limbs.
It’s unclear how well this device or similar interfaces will ultimately work, or how safe they might be. Clinical trials are designed to collect data on safety and effectiveness.
Laura Cabrera, who researches brain science at Pennsylvania State University, said that even though Neuralink uses an innovative procedure – robotic surgery – to get the device in the brain, no one has implanted it before in humans and much remains unknown.
Brain surgery is “not a trivial thing,” she said, pointing to significant potential risks such as brain hemorrhage or seizures. “And so I think we have to be mindful that even though they’re using a novel way to implant the device, we just don’t know if it’s truly going to be a … safer approach for human patients.”
She pointed out that Neuralink’s competitors plan to use their devices for medical applications only, but Musk has been outspoken about going beyond medicine. For example, Cabrera said, Musk has talked about implants for the masses that will allow people to record everything that happens to them and access the information when they want — which may raise red flags for some.
“We know that he has very bold claims,” she said. “People not really assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the technology is something that I worry about.”

Biden claims 'I've done all I can do' to secure the border

0

President Biden is saying he has done all he can do to stem the influx of migrants at the southern border, drawing criticism from House Speaker Mike Johnson.
President Biden claimed Tuesday «I’ve done all I can do» to secure the U.S. border, as Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing an impeachment push by House Republicans over his perceived failure to handle the immigration crisis.
Biden made the comment while speaking to reporters as he was leaving the White House, saying «I’ve done all I can do, just give me the power.»
«I asked them the very day I got into office,» Biden continued. «Give me the Border Patrol. Give me the judges. Give me the people who can stop this.»
The Biden administration has said it has been expanding «lawful pathways» for migrants while increasing consequences for illegal entry into the U.S. since the ending of Title 42 expulsions in May last year. It has pointed to more than 500,000 removals since May, as well as increased cooperation with Mexico to crack down on human smugglers and fentanyl trafficking.
The administration also says it has been increasing removal flights — including directly to Venezuela. However, it has stressed that it needs more funding and comprehensive immigration reform to fix what it says is a «broken» system.
House Speaker Mike Johnson shared a video on X of Biden making the remark and said Biden’s comments were «simply untrue» and «He’s either lying or misinformed.»
«Here are just a few of the authorities at his disposal – if only he would use them: Presidential Authority to Restrict Entry 212(f), Expedited Removal 235(b)(1), Discretionary Detention Authority 236(a), Mandatory Detention 236(c). No more excuses,» Johnson added.
The White House requested $14 billion in funding for the border as part of its supplemental funding request to Congress, which also includes aid to Ukraine and Israel. The request is being negotiated in Congress after Republicans demanded more limits on asylum and migrant releases into the interior.
Biden has urged Congress to pass the deal, but House Republicans and some conservatives in the Senate have said the reported proposals do not go far enough.
National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, when asked on «The Faulkner Focus» Tuesday if Biden was doing everything he could, argued «absolutely not.»
«In fact, I’m very sick of hearing all of his rhetoric. He doesn’t give evidence,» Judd said. «The evidence is incontrovertible [about] what is going on right now. Secretary Mayorkas is complicit in allowing these individuals to violate our laws. Congress would be derelict if they did not hold him accountable.
«When you look at the total number of people that cross our borders illegally and have been released into the United States, the story that doesn’t get told enough is what happens to those people that get released into the United States,» Judd added. «They are never leaving, ICE doesn’t go after them, ICE doesn’t deport them.»
Migrant numbers officially hit 302,000 in December, a new record, after 2.4 million encounters in FY23. Republicans have said that large releases into the interior and a rolling back of Trump-era policies have fueled the crisis and have accused Mayorkas of a «dereliction of duty» in his handling of it.

On Jan. 26, Megan Thee Stallion formally released her hotly anticipated single titled “HISS.” With its hard-hitting lyrics and next-level visuals, the artist is truly owning her narrative, and basically issuing a sharp warning amidst her public drama and headline-making court cases (to which she has held her tongue and said little about — at least until now).
For the glam girls who are eating up the powerful song and poetic double entendres sprinkled throughout, know that — in true Meg fashion — she *also* so happened to serve up some serious manicure moments throughout the music video that are sure to keep fans well-fed until the next track drops.
Throughout the “HISS” video, the artist embodies not only herself, but her alter ego known as “Tina Snow.” While Tina Snow is ice-cold and fierce with platinum blonde strands, Meg’s looks are defined by leather textures, black hair, and one bold color in particular.
A through-line for her looks is undoubtedly the color red, which typically symbolizes embracing one’s power, strength, and sensuality. Thus, Megan is letting the world know that she very much has the fighter Tina Snow within her, and she isn’t afraid to let that energy out.
Along with some powerful red lipstick, the rapper is sporting some ultra-long, stiletto-shaped red nails that mimic the look of shiny patent leather — which is also a very on-trend “mob wife” aesthetic.
In yet another stunning scene, Megan is pictured holding a glass of vivid red liquid while wearing a slanted hat adorned with red spider lily flowers.
Confirmed by way of an Instagram story post, the singer inadvertently shared that the spider lilies are a subtle reference to the anime series Tokyo Ghoul, which similarly represents a warning of death (akin to a snake’s hiss before it strikes).
To complete this vision, Megan sports a snake-like abstract pattern with silver chrome polish on her nails.
In one striking scene, Megan is perhaps nodding to the fact that both Thee Stallion and Tina Snow live within her all at once. And while Megan might have been quiet about drama in the past, she isn’t afraid to defend herself any longer.
While her nails are difficult to see, it’s clear that Megan has opted for her signature nail shape: lipstick tips that feature ultra-sharp slants. Further, they are painted in two tones — both black and white — just like her contrasted outfit.

Apple releases first public beta of iOS 17.4, including EU sideloading support

Apple has made the first beta of iOS 17.4 available to the public, including the changes made to accommodate new laws which will come into place within the EU starting from March 2024.
Apple has made the first public betas of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 available today, allowing anyone to download and try the newest version of Apple’s software prior to general availability. The public release follows the release to developers a week ago, and can be accessed by enabling Beta Updates within Settings -> Software Update on any compatible iOS or iPadOS device.
The key change within this beta is the addition of changes for users within the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) which will come into force starting from 7th March 2024. These changes which Apple announced last week, include support for alternative app stores and payment options outside of the App Store and Apple Pay respectively only for iOS and iPadOS users in the EU.
Apple’s changes to comply with the DMA have come under fire by rivals such as Spotify and Microsoft, saying that they are «vague and misleading» and that it is «in the wrong direction.» Additionally, Epic Games have taken no time to take shots at Apple during its announcement of the Epic Games Store on iOS, where it will be bringing Fortnite back to the platform.
Additionally it’s been reported by MacRumors that the first beta of iOS 17.4 has been re-released to developers with a new build number to match that of the public beta. Presumably the initial release to developers didn’t include the changes made to comply with the EU legislation, which have been added between that build and the current one.
Other additions to the beta include new emojis, transcription for Podcasts, support for game streaming apps such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, and updates working towards the next generation of CarPlay which is set to launch in the U.S. later this year. It isn’t known when the update is expected to release at this time.

You’ll want to take advantage of Enshrouded’s simple, clever sleep mechanic

0

Here’s a hint for playing Enshrouded: Sleep. The early access survival game’s unique system is simple to understand but complex to master.
Enshrouded, now in early access, is similar to other open-world survival games you’ve probably played before. It has a post-apocalyptic fantasy storyline, tons of trees to hit, and crafting that’ll let you build a home where you can store the endless resources you’ll pick up. Its biggest flaw right now is that it doesn’t have much of a unique identity, minus the “shroud” that will kill you if you spend too long inside it. That said, with exploration, crafting, and one of the easiest settlement-building systems I’ve ever used, Enshrouded is a good time.
However, there’s one thing that separates Enshrouded from the rest of the super-popular early access survival games out right now, and that’s sleep. You’ve likely encountered a sleep mechanic in games before — Bethesda games often allow you to heal up and pass time while sleeping, for example — but Enshrouded ties it into your grand strategy in a way that’s both easy to understand and more complex if you want to take full advantage of it. It’s not just about resting; it’s about getting a good night’s sleep.
The resting buff provides you with higher max stamina and regeneration for a period of time decided by your level and the comfort of the area around you. To get the most out of your sleep, you’ll need three things. First, you need to be under shelter, which could mean hopping into a tent, building a roof on your home, or using your pickax to make a hovel inside a boulder. Second, you need to be warm, so craft a campfire and get cozy. Finally (and most importantly), you need to be comfortable. You can’t sleep on the cold, hard ground in Enshrouded, but you can find empty cots as you explore and eventually build your own. The more furniture a shelter has, the more comfortable you’ll be.
The higher your level, the longer you can stretch out the buff. Granted, it takes a long time to level up in the early parts of the game, but even just a few minutes can make a difference. Ticking all three boxes gets you the biggest rest buff, but you can still reap some benefits if you just tick one of the boxes. So if you happen to have a roof over your head, you’ll still get a small stamina buff. It won’t last as long, but if you’re trying to run away from enemies or get through the Shroud, any stamina boost is worth looking for.
Plus, if you can get to sleep during the nighttime, the game will run at 60 times the regular speed. Considering the world of Enshrouded is dark and navigating the land is nearly impossible at night, it’s always helpful to use this feature if you can.
Valheim is another early access survival game that has a similar resting buff: Sit down next to a fire or rest in a bed and you’ll get a boost to both health regeneration and stamina regeneration. Enshrouded’s buff works better in that it’s much easier to figure out, thanks to the game’s simple UI. In Valheim, there are technically two buffs you can get from relaxing, and what you get from each is a bit complicated to understand (unless you like doing math). With Enshrouded, you just have to look at how long the buff lasts. The higher your level and the better your comfort, the longer it’ll last. I’ve seen people online get it to last a full hour, although the most I’ve gotten was around 20 minutes.
Enshrouded has a lot of subtle but effective limitations on crafting and exploration that are designed to keep you endlessly collecting resources and exploring. While this can be frustrating for people used to just going out and letting their pickax fly for hours, it does implement some tension that forces you back to your home to get some other work done. This can be circumvented by leveling up to some extent, but for most players just starting out, they’ll have to get a good night’s rest frequently. And it’s worth it.
