Persona 3 Reload review — it doesn’t miss

0

Persona 3 Reload brings fantastic enhancements and quality-of-life improvements to an engaging RPG that fans will love.
Whether you’re wandering around the vibrant Iwatodai Strip Mall to grab a beef bowl, hanging out with quirky characters, or fighting fierce battles in the dead of night, it’s hard not to get fully absorbed into Persona 3 Reload. Atlus’ remake of its 2006 turn-based role-playing game is a triumph that successfully updates a slightly dated adventure into something that fans new and old won’t want to miss.
Persona 3 Reload puts players into the shoes of a quiet high schooler who moves to Tatsumi Port Island’s Gekkoukan High School as a transfer student. Upon arriving on the island, he becomes aware of the Dark Hour, an extra hour of the day that the majority of the population is blissfully unaware of. During this time, monsters called Shadows appear in the world, and only those who awaken to the power of Persona can fight and defeat them by summoning manifestations of their personality. Luckily for us, the protagonist is one of these people, and, alongside his fellow Persona-wielding friends, sets out on a quest to defeat the Shadows and uncover the mysteries of the Dark Hour.
At the heart of Persona 3 Reload is Tartarus — a sprawling, tower-like dungeon that emerges from Gekkoukan High School during the Dark Hour. More and more floors open up throughout the game’s lengthy runtime, which are filled with increasingly challenging foes and bosses to fight. Given that the floor structure randomizes each time you enter, revisiting old floors will never be quite the same. Don’t worry though; there are plenty of checkpoints, which you can transport to by using teleporters found throughout the dungeon (including the entrance). Dangerous nightlife
Within Tartarus, players are able to use new consumable items known as Twilight Fragments. These shiny-looking objects can be obtained in Tartarus itself, as well as out in the world, as a reward for certain quests. You can use these to unlock special treasure chests containing particularly rare items, which are definitely worth cracking open whenever you can.
Using clock-like structures in Tartarus, players can spend seven Twilight Fragments to fully restore their party’s health and Spirit Points (SP), which is very handy for longer dungeon crawls. On top of that, spending Twilight Fragments can randomly spawn a special location which allows the user to select two allies to strengthen, instantly bringing them to the same level as the protagonist in the next battle they win. I can’t understate what a fantastic quality-of-life feature this is — it completely removes the need to grind EXP for any party members who’ve been keeping the bench warm, meaning you can comfortably switch the team around without any extra fuss.
The battle system itself has also been updated, perhaps most notably with the addition of the ‘Shift’ option, which is comparable to the Baton Pass mechanic from Persona 5. When one of the party knocks down an enemy (either by hitting them with something they’re weak to or landing a critical hit), they trigger ‘One More,’ giving them another action, which can be repeated by knocking down another enemy. Using the Shift mechanic, the attacking party member can provide this extra turn to a different ally, which is perfect for striking more weaknesses and building towards a powerful All-Out Attack, which can be initiated when all enemies are on the ground.
Also new to Persona 3 Reload’s combat is the Theurgy mechanic. Theurgy moves are unique to each character and boast various effects depending on the user. Junpei, for example, can unleash a powerful Slash attack on one foe, which ignores any resistances, while Akihiro can hit every enemy on the screen with a substantial Electric attack. In order to pull them off, you’ll need to fill a character’s Theurgy Gauge by landing attacks, knocking down foes, and performing ally-specific actions. For example, Yukari’s is boosted when she heals her allies. They’re instrumental in more challenging fights and look delightfully flashy, too.Forging bonds
Outside of Tartarus, your protagonist is tasked with keeping up a normal school and social life, attending lessons, completing exams, and hanging out with friends to boost your ‘social links.’ These power up the Personas you create and also provide a fantastic way to learn more about the people around you, such as those on your team and at your school — and they’re all fully voiced. Within your team, you can only complete social links with your female allies (more on that later), but special ‘Link Events’ have been added as a way to bond with your male friends. They’re time-limited, so it’s advisable to view them as they become available, and without spoiling anything, they’re well worth exploring for the extra background they can provide on Reload’s characters.
I’d also like to give a special shoutout to the new ‘Rewind’ feature, which has come in handy for me more times than I’d like to admit. Essentially, the game automatically creates a list of save states from throughout your in-game days, and you can reload the most recent few via your options menu, even if you’ve been playing a bit gung-ho and haven’t saved in a while. This feature is perfect for advancing social links effectively, as you can redo conversations as many times as you like until you choose all of the dialogue options that provide the most points. My only gripe here is that you can’t open up this menu in the middle of a conversation, so I’ve often had to fast-forward through the text until I’m finally given control again, knowing the whole time that I’ll be going through it all again in a couple of minutes. Missed opportunities
As a faithful remake of the original Persona 3, it’s challenging to find fault with Reload. However, it’s hard not to look at the female protagonist included in Persona 3 Portable and be disappointed that she’s not included here. Sure, this isn’t a remake of Portable, but, given that the protagonist is meant to be a self-insert, having a female character should never have been considered a bonus feature in the first place. It should have been the standard back in 2006, never mind in 2024.
Although not included in any of the previous iterations of Persona 3, it’s also a pity that the protagonist has no male romance options. While the mainline Persona series hasn’t included any same-sex romances since Persona 2: Innocent Sin, one scene in 2023’s Persona 5 Tactica allowed protagonist Joker to imagine his dream wedding with any of the main cast, including Ryuji and Yusuke, which was a promising sign of more to come. Unfortunately, Reload doesn’t follow in these footsteps, which is a real shame as it could have offered a meaningful improvement on the original. Moving forward in the series, I sincerely hope that this is something Atlus addresses.
These missed opportunities aside, Persona 3 Reload is a delight. Each area is a joy to wander around, battles are engaging, and exploring Tartarus never gets tiresome. You’ll soon find yourself playing for ‘one more day’ to unlock a new social link, progress the story, or just go to your favorite eatery and live vicariously through your protagonist’s hectic social diary. The soundtrack is also fantastic, and players will potentially never hear the words ‘disturbing the peace’ without mentally bursting into song ever again.

Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ upgraded speakers tested

Samsung upgraded the speakers on the 2024 generation — have a listen to the S24 and S24+. Like last year’s models, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+.
Like last year’s models, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ feature stereo speakers – well, a bottom-firing speaker plus the earpiece. While Samsung didn’t say much about it, the 2024 models bring tangibly upgraded speakers. Here, have a listen.
We record our tests in a controlled acoustic environment, playing through a selection of different music genres that you can listen to. There is also a sweep of the whole frequency range, so that we can draw the frequency response curves you see below.
Samsung improved the mids in the S24 series at the cost of some bass, but the latter mostly comes in the part of the range human ears can’t perceive. Also, the speakers are notably louder than their predecessors (with a smaller difference between the vanilla and plus models this year).
If you put on a pair of headphones, you will hear that the improvement is bigger than it may seem at first. There’s better stereo separation too.
Note that you can add more phones to the comparison – we have an ever-growing list, so there is a good chance that you can compare how your current phone sounds versus the new Galaxy S24 series.
As you can tell, we’re hard at work to finish the full review. While you wait, you can check out our post on the Galaxy S24 battery life test (note: it’s the Exynos variant).

Apple Vision Pro gets new mixed-reality weather forecasts as we wait for more apps

0

Predicting the weather like never before
Apple’s Vision Pro is just a couple of days away from launching, and while Apple has highlighted some astonishing apps that are coming to the device, there have also been questions over how many apps will be available for users upon release. Well, we now know that one of the best iPhone apps will be among that number, and it could provide you with a great way to use Apple’s mixed-reality headset.
The app is the ever-popular Carrot Weather. As the name suggests, this app provides you with forecasts, weather warnings, and everything in between. It’s known for its caustic sense of humor – your reports are delivered by a robot whose outlook ranges from gentle to misanthropic – and that’s helped it stand out among a slate of other excellent weather apps.
On the Vision Pro, though, Carrot Weather is going to do something a little different. According to screenshots posted by the M1 Astra account on X (formerly Twitter), Carrot Weather will come with a floating planet Earth that shows the weather at whatever global location you select, as well as mini-games you can play via an tool at the bottom of the app window.
That comes in addition to the range of weather data you’d expect from an app like this, including temperatures, wind speeds, sunrise and sunset times, and more. That information will be displayed in a large floating window that shows far more data at a glance than the Carrot Weather iPhone app is able to do.
As spotted by MacRumors, Carrot Weather developer Brian Mueller said the floating globe would be the “marquee feature” of the app and that “it’s just really cool being able to look at a globe floating in your living room.” It shows one of the ways the Vision Pro may let apps do things they never could on an iPhone or iPad.Is the Vision Pro selling well?
It comes as news emerged that Apple has reportedly sold around 200,000 Vision Pro headsets in the first 10 days since pre-orders opened on January 19 (via MacRumors). Given pre-release predictions, that seems like an impressively high figure, but there is a caveat to those numbers.
Analysts had previously predicted that Apple would sell about 400,000 headsets in the entire first year of its availability. Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo, meanwhile, forecast that Apple would produce between 60,000 and 80,000 units for the device’s launch, suggesting that even Apple was unprepared for the level of demand.
That said, Kuo also claimed in a later report that Apple sold between 160,000 and 180,000 headsets during the pre-order weekend. That suggests that demand might have slowed in the days since then, as Apple has now apparently hit 200,000 units sold after 10 days.
The big question is whether Apple can sustain Vision Pro demand throughout the year. A large number of those 200,000 sales would likely have come from developers, hardcore Apple fans and early adopters. Will Apple be able to sustain this level of sales going forward, or will interest slowly die off over time? We’ll be watching closely.

2018's best platformer now has an adorable Mario 64-style tribute made by the game's original dev team for its 6th anniversary—and it's completely free

0

Super Mario Madeline.
Celeste is one of the best platformers in the past decade—it’s a game with a heartfelt, deeply affecting narrative that’s also just really damn good at what it does: Complex 2D platforming with a skill ceiling so high it’s nudging the moon. Now you can play it in 3D, kinda.
Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain is a short romp through a 3D version of the original game’s first chapter, the Forsaken City. There’s about 30 strawberries to collect, both scattered around the level and in Mario Sunshine-style jumping puzzles, complete with their own finger-snapping remix.
It was made in a week by the game’s original devs, and while that does show in controls which are occasionally a li’l stiff and a camera that’s hard to wrangle, it’s otherwise just as charming as you’d expect.
What’s interesting to me is that this is a solid proof of concept. Celeste’s core moveset, surprisingly nobody, translates super well into a 3D collectathon-style game. I had a grand old time scurrying around these snowy ruins looking for berries, even if I’m super rusty when it comes to landing on anything resembling a platform. Here’s some gameplay.
While I did encounter some performance hitches, again—made in a week, available for free. If you enjoyed the original Celeste back in 2018, this tribute is well worth the teeny-tiny download time. Just to gaze upon an adorable 3D Madeline, more than anything. Look at her, she’s so hungry for strawberries.
There’s also a timer built-in, naturally. Considering how speedrun-hungry Celeste’s community was, I’m sure we’re about to see this bite-sized game pushed to its absolute limits in the next week or so. The tech maestros of the internet shall descend upon it like a flock of seagulls on some dropped food, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Neue Vorwürfe gegen UN-Hilfswerk in Gaza

0

Israeli Forces Storm Hospital Dressed as Civilians

0

A disturbing report.
AP (“Israeli undercover forces dressed as women and medics storm West Bank hospital, killing 3 militants“):
Israeli forces disguised as civilian women and medical workers stormed a hospital Tuesday in the occupied West Bank, killing three Palestinian militants in a dramatic raid that underscored how deadly violence has spilled into the territory from the war in Gaza.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces opened fire inside the wards of the Ibn Sina Hospital in the town of Jenin. The ministry condemned the raid and called on the international community to pressure Israel’s military to halt such operations in hospitals. A hospital spokesperson said there was no exchange of fire, indicating that it was a targeted killing.
The military said the militants were using the hospital as a hideout, without providing evidence. It alleged that one of those targeted in the raid had transferred weapons and ammunition to others for a planned attack, purportedly inspired by the Hamas assault on southern Israel on Oct. 7 that triggered the war in Gaza.
Footage said to be security camera video from the hospital that circulated on social media showed about a dozen undercover forces, most of them armed, dressed as women with Muslim headscarves or hospital staff in scrubs or white doctor’s coats. One in a surgical mask carried a rifle in one arm and a folded wheelchair in the other. The forces were seen patting down one man who kneeled against a wall, his arms raised.
[…]
The military said in Tuesday’s hospital raid, forces killed Mohammed Jalamneh, 27, who it said was planning an imminent attack. The two other men killed, brothers Basel and Mohammed Ghazawi, were hiding inside the hospital and were involved in attacks, the military claimed.
The military did not provide details on how the three were killed. Its statement said Jalamneh was armed with a pistol, but made no mention of an exchange of fire.
Hamas claimed the three men as members, calling the operation “a cowardly assassination.”
Hospital spokesperson Tawfiq al-Shobaki said there was no exchange. He said the Israelis attacked doctors, nurses, and hospital security during the raid.
“What happened is a precedent,” he said. “There was never an assassination inside a hospital. There were arrests and assaults, but not an assassination.”
He said Basel Ghazawi had been a patient in the hospital since October with partial paralysis.
All of the reports I’m seeing on the incident are either other sites using AP wire copy or “re-reporting” of the AP story. The Daily Beast reposts a cell phone video of the attack from Twitter.
The main sources for the report are Palestinian but there are vaguely-attributed reports from the Israeli military that seem to confirm the broad details.
The Palestinian sources seem to be most outraged by the fact that the IDF stormed a hospital to assassinate militants. While it makes me squeamish, it’s quite possibly justifiable under the laws of war, if Hamas is using it as a base. On the other hand, soldiers disguising themselves as noncombatants in order to gain military advantage is almost certainly an act of perfidy, arguably the most heinous of war crimes because it endangers the very existence of laws of war.
To be sure, Hamas is a nonstate actor that is neither a signatory to international law nor an adherent to it. That does not, however, change Israel’s obligations.
