M&S parts ways with CTO after cyber attack

0

M&S chief digital and technology officer Rachel Higham steps back from her role in the wake of the April 2025 cyber attack on the retailer’s systems.
M&S chief digital and technology officer Rachel Higham steps back from her role in the wake of the April 2025 cyber attack on the retailer’s systems.
Marks & Spencer chief digital and technology officer Rachel Higham is to leave the retailer, in the wake of a ransomware attack on its core systems from which it is still recovering.
Higham, who had been in post for less than two years, will be replaced by current retail director Sacha Berendji, according to M&S, which said Higham plans to take a career break.
In an internal memo obtained by specialist retail magazine The Grocer, M&S chief exec Stuart Machin said that having steered the team through “a challenging six months” Higham herself had taken the decision to step back.
“Rachel has been a valued part of the leadership team since joining, building a strengthened digital and technology function, playing a key role over recent months, and laying foundations for the future,” Machin wrote.
“Rachel has been a steady hand and calm head at an extraordinary time for the business, and we wish her well for the future.”
The Scattered Spider attack on M&S crippled the retailers’ systems at Easter after IT teams were forced to take emergency action and pull systems offline.
The high street stalwart was forced to contend with gaps on shelves due to problems with its stock systems, and the suspension of various online services such as click-and-collect. Similar attacks befell Co-op and Harrods at the same time, although these are not thought to have been as severe in their impact.
In M&S’ case, although most of the disrupted services are now back up and running, the financial impact will be long lasting, with the retailer previously saying it expects to be out-of-pocket to the tune of at least £300m.Traumatic experience
Managing incident response in the wake of a high-profile cyber attack is an intense and difficult job, and IT and security leaders on the frontlines frequently find themselves having to shoulder a certain amount of blame, although there is no indication that Higham and M&S have parted ways amid any negative sentiment.
Nevertheless the psychological impact of experiencing such an incident – particularly when a gang such as Scattered Spider, which has on occasion been known to resort to violent threats against its targets – is not to be underestimated.
Indeed, burnout has become a perennial problem among CISOs and security pros, not helped by the widening scope of both the threat landscape, and the responsibilities linked to the role.
Writing in Computer Weekly in July, Tim Grieveson, CSO at ThingsRecon, said: “The CISO and security leader role has been stretched as they become accountable and responsible for more assets, processes and capabilities critical for business operations.
“The more critical cyber security becomes to business continuity, customer trust, and regulatory compliance, the more the CISO role is being morphed beyond recognition, and we’re approaching breaking point,” he said.
Describing the impact of the M&S cyber attack before a parliamentary committee in July, the retailer’s chairman Archie Norman said: “It’s fair to say that everybody at M&S experienced it.
“Our ordinary shop colleagues [were] working in ways they hadn’t worked for 30 years, working extra hours just to try to keep the show on the road. Let aside our tech colleagues, for a week, probably, the cyber team had no sleep.
“It’s not an overstatement to describe it as traumatic,” said Norman.
Computer Weekly contacted M&S seeking further comment but the organisation had not responded at press time.Timeline: M&S, Scattered Spider and ShinyHunters

Trump arrives at Yankee Stadium, gives speech to team ahead of 9/11 anniversary game

0

President Donald Trump arrived at Yankee Stadium on Thursday and gave a speech to the New York Yankees on the 24h anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
President Donald Trump arrived at Yankee Stadium on Thursday and spoke to the New York Yankees ahead of their 9/11 anniversary game against the Detroit Tigers.
Trump landed in New York shortly after 6 p.m., and a couple of hours earlier, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Trump was meeting with the team in the clubhouse before the game.
«Had the honor and fortune of some presidents over the years, first pitches or whatever it may be. So the fact that he’s gonna be here, I’m excited to be a part of. I don’t know what it’ll be like, but to interact with him for a few minutes, something I’m looking forward to», Boone said.
Thursday marked the first time Trump attended a Major League Baseball game since the 2021 World Series between the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves after his presidential term. Prior to Thursday, his last game as a sitting president was in the 2019 World Series between the Astros and Washington Nationals.
Trump announced earlier this month that he would attend the game. The Yankees announced it on Wednesday and urged fans to arrive early and take public transportation. Gates opened at 4 p.m. ET, 90 minutes earlier than normal.
Prior to Trump’s arrival, the Yankees scoreboard showed highlights of the 2001 World Series between the Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks won the series in seven games, but the Yankees’ victories in Games 4 and 5 both ended in dramatic walk-offs, less than two months after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Already guaranteed to have a heightened presence, in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, security was boosted throughout the ballpark with the Secret Service and sniffer dogs outside the gates.
Boone, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodon laid a wreath at the 9/11 monument in Monument Park earlier Thursday.
Next season, the Yankees and New York Mets will face off at Yankee Stadium on the 25th anniversary of the attacks. They played at Citi Field on Sept. 11, 2021.

Jennifer Aniston has adorable reaction after being asked about supportive boyfriend Jim Curtis

0

Jennifer Aniston gave a big smile when her boyfriend, Jim Curtis, was mentioned at the Season 4 premiere of «The Morning Show» in New York City.
Jennifer Aniston is glowing over her new relationship with her boyfriend, hypnotist Jim Curtis.
The actress lit up at the mention of Curtis while doing a red carpet interview at the Season 4 premiere of “The Morning Show” in New York City on Tuesday. Although she remained tight-lipped about her new man, Aniston’s facial expression said it all.
When an Entertainment Tonight interviewer said he was happy for Aniston and that Curtis seemed like “a really special guy,” Aniston gave a big grin.
“That’s very nice,” she said as she walked away smiling.
Curtis, 50, supported Aniston, 56, at the premiere by attending, but didn’t pose for red carpet photos with her.
Curtis appeared in good spirits and was content to let Aniston shine, as he stood nearby while she posed on the red carpet for the screening at the Museum of Modern Art, in video obtained by People.
Aniston and Curtis’ relationship is definitely heating up as she recently soft-launched their relationship on her Instagram.
The “Friends” alum shared photos from her summer, including one of the back of Curtis’ head.
Aniston’s new relationship first made headlines in July when she and Curtis were photographed on Spain’s Mallorca island with the Emmy winner’s good friends, Jason Bateman and Bateman’s wife, Amanda Anka.
Since then, they’ve been spotted multiple times together, including on a double date with her bestie, Courteney Cox, and Cox’s boyfriend, Snow Patrol singer Johnny McDaid, at Nobu in Malibu, Calif.
Aniston’s pals are reportedly all for her new romance.
“Her close friends love him. He’s amazing to be around,” an insider told People last month. “He has this really calm and secure energy. Jen loves it.”
Curtis “feels different” than the A-lister’s past exes — including ex-husbands Brad Pitt and Justin Theroux — the source added.
But Curtis isn’t new to being with someone famous. “Real Housewives of New York” alum Bethenny Frankel revealed earlier this month that she previously dated him a decade ago.
Frankel, 54, had nothing but positive things to say about the wellness guru on her “Just B With Bethenny” podcast, noting that he was “a nice guy” and that she was “happy” for Aniston.
“He’s a handsome, nice man, and he seems kind,” she said. “I think this is good. I like it, and I’m happy for her and for him.”

Remembering Charlie Kirk

0

Charlie stuck with us as he went from rising star, to mega star to conservative icon.
Charlie Kirk, conservative icon, fearless champion of debate and leader of a powerful youth movement, is being mourned today by Americans across the political spectrum—those who agreed with him and those with whom he fiercely disagreed.
I mourn Charlie too, as a friend and as someone who played a crucial role in helping me realize my vision for a modern Newsweek. When I first met Charlie in early 2019, I had just taken over as owner and CEO of Newsweek, a publication that had lost its ability to connect with the vast majority of Americans, the foundation of its business model for nearly 90 years. Its recent reputation for unyielding liberal bias had alienated readers, writers, and thought leaders with differing views. I wanted to reposition the brand as a platform that would welcome all Americans to the search for common ground through vigorous, civil debate.
Charlie was one of the few conservative figures who were willing to engage with Newsweek at that time. He embraced the idea from the moment I discussed it with him. Not only did he support my vision, he put skin in the game, working for us as columnist and advocating for Newsweek among suspicious conservatives and moderates. It was a tough task. We didn’t want Newsweek to be a conservative publication and continued to publish many strong liberal points of view, as we do today. And Newsweek faced furious pushback from the industry for platforming conservatives in the first place.
Charlie stuck with us as he went from rising star, to mega star to conservative icon. And we at Newsweek persisted and prevailed. Much of what Newsweek is widely known for today—its large audience, «The Debate» on our homepage, the «fairness meter» on our stories and our meteoric growth—can be traced back to those pivotal decisions and the support and trust of a few courageous people. Charlie Kirk was one of them.
I didn’t always agree with Charlie. I know my colleagues at Newsweek disagreed emphatically with some of his positions. But we all agreed with him on the core virtue and value of respectful debate. It’s a cause he championed passionately, brilliantly, often provocatively and always with a smile. Charlie and his young family have paid a terrible price for his belief in good faith debate. For others who share that belief this is a moment of deep sorrow and of deep resolve.
Thank you, Charlie. May you rest in peace!
