US warns Russia may be ready to use new lethal missile against Ukraine

0

A U_S_ intelligence assessment has concluded that Russia may use its lethal new intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine again in “coming days.”
A U.S. intelligence assessment has concluded that Russia may use its lethal new intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine again in “coming days,” a U.S. official said Wednesday.
The experimental Oreshnik missile is seen by U.S. officials more as an attempt at intimidation than a game-changer on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive information.
The official said Russia has only a handful of the missiles and that they carry a smaller warhead than other missiles that Russia has regularly launched at Ukraine.
Russia first fired the the weapon in a Nov. 21 missile attack against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Surveillance camera video of the strike showed huge fireballs piercing the darkness and slammed into the ground at astonishing speed.
Within hours of the attack on the military facility, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the rare step of speaking on national TV to boast about the new, hypersonic missile. He warned the West that its next use could be against Ukraine’s NATO allies who allowed Kyiv to use their longer-range missiles to strike inside Russia.
The attack came two days after Putin signed a revised version of Russia’s nuclear doctrine that lowered the threshold for using nuclear weapons. The doctrine allows for a potential nuclear response by Moscow even to a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power.
That strike also came soon after President Joe Biden agreed to loosened restrictions on Ukraine’s use of American made longer-range weapons to strike deeper into Russian territory.
“We believe that we have the right to use our weapons against military facilities of the countries that allow to use their weapons against our facilities,” Putin said at the time.
The Pentagon said the Oreshnik was an experimental type of intermediate-range ballistic missile, or IRBM, based on Russia’s RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM. The attack marked the first time such a weapon was used in a war.
Intermediate-range missiles can fly between 500 to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,400 miles). Such weapons were banned under a Soviet-era treaty that Washington and Moscow abandoned in 2019.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is pushing Putin to act to reach an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine, describing it as part of his active efforts as president-elect to end the war.
“Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness,” Trump wrote on social media last weekend, referring to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Prediction: Luigi Mangione Will Become ‘Che Guevera’ for the Selfie Generation

“I hope in the future Americans are thought of as a warlike, vicious people because I bet a lot of high schools would pick ‘Americans’ as their mascot.” —Jack Handey, “Deep Thoughts”
We waste vast amounts of time and energy arguing over symbols, emblems, mascots, and various forms of artistic representation. On both the left and the right, our most passionate members get sucked into the silliest of debates: From renaming buildings to policing pronouns to the sex lives of Mattel products, these are the sorts of grandstanding controversies that make all participants look like kooks. Sure, it excites members of your base who are on the carnivore diet (subsisting solely on “red meat”), but nothing substantial is ever accomplished.
Attacking symbols is easy. Solving problems is hard.
This is why it’s such a popular pastime for hacks on the left and the right: It’s all spectacle and no substance. Pure fireworks; zero warmth.
It’s debate for the sake of debate.
Because symbols are malleable. They can mean whatever you want whenever you want — and you’re always free to change your mind.
And we do change our mind: Symbols change over time. Words, phrases, and archetypes aren’t static. They’re in a constant state of flux, evolving and growing with the society that uses them, mirroring our aspirations and reflecting our phobias.
This is why symbols always say more about the speaker than the object itself (or himself).
Humans coopt symbols all the time, using them for their own purposes. It’s why so many religious holidays, customs, and observances have pagan roots: When you redirect what the old symbol represents, you can also repurpose some of its adjectives for a new symbol.
That’s useful in social engineering.
The Nazis didn’t invent the swastika. It’s an ancient symbol that predated Hitler by 10,000 years. But after the atrocities of the Third Reich, the swastika became synonymous with Nazism, antisemitism, and Aryan nationalism. Its symbolic value as religious iconography was contorted into something vulgar and loathsome.
Symbols must be protected — lest someone repulsive coopt them.
Over the past 30 years, the so-called “Confederate flag” (stars and bars) went from a symbol so uncontroversial that it adorned Bo and Luke’s car on a Friday night TV show, to a vile, evil, racist symbol of white supremacy. When I was a little boy, the “good guy” pro wrestlers would walk to the ring waving a Confederate Flag to show they were hard-working country boys — and whites and blacks wildly cheered them! The British metal band Iron Maiden wore Confederate shirts when they toured the South in the 1980s. Nowadays, of course, any TV exec who green-lit a kid’s show with Confederate imagery would be fired.
So what happened?
Culture changes over time. Society never stands still. Sure, most of the blame belongs to the racists and dumba**es who’ve appropriated Southern symbolism (along with the liberals who overemphasize this association), but some of the blame belongs to the Southerners who whistled Dixie while their symbols were stolen.
Any symbol worth using is worth protecting.
The “rules” for symbolic representation are vague and mysterious: It’s the Law of the Jungle. For racial representations, there’s probably been the biggest cultural shift. A few decades ago, racial distinctions were proudly promoted, especially in sports, because they helped drive fans to arenas. “The Brown Bomber” Joe Louis, “The Little Hebrew” Abe Attell, “The Italian Superman” Bruno Sammartino, and Kid Chocolate were all huge draws — and there’s a reason why everyone in America with at least one Irish grandparent is (annoyingly) cheering for Notre Dame.
Promoters made money by highlighting tribal distinctions.
In the past, nonexistent racial differences were also promoted: Max Baer is credited as the first Jewish heavyweight champion (and actually fought with the Star of David on his trunks), but it was mostly a marketing gimmick: Those who got an eyeful of his intact “mini Max” in the shower questioned the legitimacy of his Hebrew identity. Even in the “sport” of pro wrestling, most of the feather-wearing Native Americans, evil Russians, and assorted foreigners weren’t what they claimed to be either. (Terry Bollea is ethnically Italian, but was renamed “Hulk Hogan” because a promoter thought he sort of looked Irish.)
Nowadays, only two entities are allowed to use Native American names and symbols: Jeep automobiles and military weapons. I don’t know why the Jeep Cherokee, Tomahawk missiles, and Apache helicopters are fine, but sports teams are racist and taboo, but dem’s the rules. (Apparently.)
But every now and then, a cultural moment comes along that’s just begging for appropriation. The image was so memorable and so powerful that political activists couldn’t resist swiping right.
Che Guevara was a racist, homophobic, mass-murdering dirtbag. He thought black people were inferior. His image and iconography were all over the BLM protests, but what Guevara actually said about black people was appalling: “The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink.” “The blacks, those magnificent examples of the African race who have maintained their racial purity thanks to their lack of an affinity with bathing.”
He also sent gay people to Auschwitz-inspired concentration camps.
Yet Mercedes used Che Guevara to market cars. (What? A lack of cultural sensitivity from Germany? I’m shocked!)
Why?
Che Guevara might’ve been a bigot and a creep, but yowee, looky those cheekbones! He’s dreamy! Sigh…
Even though Che + BLM makes as much sense as “Gays for Palestine.”
Luigi Mangione, the suspected murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is a good-looking kid. And culturally, he’s here at exactly the right time: We’re knee-deep in Generation Selfie — a nation of social media addicts — and just a day or two after his crime, OpenAI released a video generator called Sora.
That’s a helluva one-two punch.
First, Mangione will be the patron saint of the socialized healthcare movement. At the next major rally, you can be sure his name, face, brand, and likeness will be prominently represented.
But it won’t end there.
Over the next few years, Luigi Mangione will become the new Che Guevara for the greater liberal and/or Antifa movement. His face and likeness will be appropriated by all kinds of radical causes. Just like Che, his image will be reprinted on t-shirts, flags, banners, and more — his posters draped over the walls of countless college dorms.
And just like Che, he’ll be repurposed by people and causes that he (probably) despises.
In “Batman Begins,” Bruce Wayne explained to Alfred Pennyworth the enduring power of symbolism: “As a man, I’m flesh and blood, I can be ignored, I can be destroyed. But as a symbol… as a symbol, I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting.”
Bruce Wayne was right. But he was also wrong.
Because once you become a symbol, you’re no longer an individual. For good or bad, you’re now society’s mirror.
And mirrors don’t create. They only reflect.

These are the Apple stories that were bigger than the iPhone in 2024

0

It’s time to cast our eyes back at the year that was and see how things shook out for Apple.
2024 is fast fading behind us and thus, as is our custom, it’s time to cast our eyes back at the year that was and see how things shook out for Apple.
A lot has happened to the company over the past twelve months–not all of it to Apple’s liking. As Apple has gotten larger and larger, it’s found itself increasingly in the crosshairs of governments, not to mention its equally weighty competitors. While the company remains wildly successful from a financial standpoint, it’s struggled somewhat when it comes to its vision of the future. In short, there are definitely cracks puncturing Cupertino’s traditionally invincible image.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and see the stories that shaped Apple’s 2024.Continental drift
If there’s one story from 2024 that is likely to have an outsized impact on Apple’s existence going forward, it’s the company’s clashes with the European Commission. This came to a head in 2024 as Apple was forced to comply with the region’s Digital Markets Act and release a substantial platform update that allows for third-party app distribution on iOS and iPadOS.
Apple continues to throw its weight around, sometimes using its bully pulpit of notarizations for reasons that would seem to go beyond the stated intentions of platform safety and security.
And yet, as simple as that sentence seems, the reality was anything but cut and dried. Apple did its darnedest to comply with the letter of the law but still keep its traditional App Store model on top, even as the EC attempted to enforce the spirit of its rules. The result has been an uneasy stalemate: yes, third-party app stores are currently available in the European Union, but they haven’t had a big impact yet. And Apple continues to throw its weight around, sometimes using its bully pulpit of notarizations for reasons that would seem to go beyond the stated intentions of platform safety and security.
The story’s hardly at an end, either. A preliminary ruling from the EC in June deemed that Apple was not in compliance with the DMA, with a final decision to be handed down in March of 2025. Depending on how it all shakes out, the App Store model may be on the wane.
Between that and other pending legal and governmental matters elsewhere around the world—including the U.S. where the company found itself targeted by an antitrust action—Apple may find itself fighting battles on multiple fronts in the year to come.Intelligence gathering
After more than a year of being deemed late to the AI party—and what an awkward face-melting, variable number of fingers party it is—Apple made a splash at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference by unveiling its own foray into the market: Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI tools that touches everything from writing to image generation to improvements to Siri. With this announcement, Apple seemed to be banking heavily on its reputation of delivering not the first solution to market, but the best.
We’ll be hearing more
But even now, those Apple Intelligence features have only just started to roll out, with the arrival of the second round—including contentious AI image generation features—expected imminently, as of this writing. Response to the first round was mixed to underwhelmed, especially when compared to offerings from competitors that have already pushed well past where even Apple’s not-yet-here features promise to be.
Apple Intelligence is a multi-year endeavor, however, and next year will bring some of its most anticipated features, including a smarter Siri that’s aware of users’ personal context. More than anything else, that seems poised to answer the question of just how far behind Apple really is when it comes to AI features that set it apart from everyone else.
Apple’s clearly invested a lot of time and energy on this front, even if it started somewhat later than its rivals. The real question hovering out there is whether generative AI is a flash in the pan or a technology that really will transform the industry. The outcome of that larger issue could dictate just how relevant Apple Intelligence ends up being—and how smart Apple looks.Automotive vision
Much attention in the Apple-watching realm is focused on what big project the company will tackle next. This year shows just how much of a struggle Apple itself has had in answering that question.
Remember the Apple Vision Pro?
After a decade, the Apple Car project drove its way into the grave without ever getting to the product stage. The stuff of perennial rumors, the car project was Apple’s attempt to find the next big thing, but it was mired in an unclear vision and high turnover in its leadership. In the end, the most positive sign was that the company had the courage to pull the plug on something that wasn’t working.
But with the car project gone, all eyes turned elsewhere for Apple’s future.
It’s almost quaint to think back to the beginning of the year, when the most anticipated Apple product was the arrival of the Vision Pro. But as was largely expected, its high price tag and limited feature set outweighed its impressive technology. It was only saved from being a flop by virtue of the fact that Apple didn’t really expect it to do a blockbuster business in the first place. The real proof will be in whatever changes the company makes for the product’s successor: will it shed features and cost to appeal to more customers, or will Apple stick to its high expectations and damn the torpedoes. The rest of the story
Elsewhere, Apple made the jump to its latest chip architecture, which powered an impressive and well-regarded revamp to the Mac mini, as well as nice updates to the MacBook Pro line and the iMac. And, of course, the iPhone 16 line debuted, marking the first time ever the company added a physical control for the second year running, perhaps proving that Steve Jobs and Jony Ive’s stranglehold on Apple design may finally be coming to an end.
As for what looms ahead for Apple in 2025, well, there’s plenty on the horizon–it may just be one of the company’s biggest years ever. We’ll break down exactly what to expect next time.

Storm Shadow.
