Sources — Monte McNair out as Kings GM after play-in loss

0

Monte McNair is out as Kings general manager following the team’s season-ending loss to the Mavericks on Wednesday night in the play-in tournament, sources told ESPN.
Monte McNair is out as general manager of the Sacramento Kings, sources told ESPN.
The decision was made after the two sides reached a mutual agreement, sources said.
The Kings’ season ended Wednesday night in a 120-106 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the No. 9 versus No. 10 play-in tournament game.
McNair spent five seasons running the Kings, winning NBA executive of the year in 2023 when Sacramento went 48-34 and ended an NBA record 16-year playoff drought.
The Kings have won 40 or more games in three straight seasons under McNair’s leadership. Before this streak, they had not won 40 games in any season since 2005-06.
The Kings had a .488 win percentage under McNair — from 2006-07 to before McNair took over, the franchise had a .362 win percentage, second worst in the NBA during that span.
McNair’s departure comes three weeks after assistant GM Wes Wilcox left to become general manager of the University of Utah’s men’s basketball team. Wilcox also spent five seasons in Sacramento’s front office.

The man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by grievous means and for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty.
A 22-year-old man was taken into custody for reportedly slashing another man at Hougang Avenue 8 on Thursday, April 17.
He attacked and injured three police officers with a wooden plank and nails while they were arresting him. The officers have suffered minor injuries.
According to the police, the man was roaming around nude when they received cries for assistance at approximately 1:10 pm. Earlier, a 31-year-old man had allegedly been attacked by him.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they received a call for assistance at 1.30 pm at Block 681 Hougang Avenue 8.
The man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by grievous means and for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty.
As case evidence, a knife and a nail-studded wooden plank were confiscated. The police investigations are still ongoing.

China’s ties with the Americas are a net positive for the whole region

Instead of stubbornly hanging onto the Monroe Doctrine, Washington should embrace Beijing’s relationships with the US’ southern neighbours.
The framework for China’s diplomacy can be summarised in four axioms: Major powers are the key; neighbouring countries are the priority; the developing world is the foundation; and multilateral diplomacy is the stage. To China, the developing world includes underdeveloped countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
It is well known that China’s relationship with the Americas has been developing rapidly across politics, economics and culture. However, this win-win relationship has caused great concern, uneasiness and even vigilance in the United States.
Different US administrations have tried hard to contain China’s presence in the Americas, echoing the Monroe Doctrine’s legacy of keeping external powers out of the Western Hemisphere. A recent case is US President Donald Trump’s pressure on CK Hutchison, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate, to sell its Panama Canal ports.
In 1823, then US president James Monroe gave a speech before Congress. Part of this speech became the three key components of the Monroe Doctrine: first, the Americas were no longer open to new European colonies; second, European powers should not interfere in the political affairs of independent nations in the Western Hemisphere; and finally, the US would not involve itself in European affairs.
However, as many point out, the Monroe Doctrine soon became a tool for US imperialism and treating Latin America and the Caribbean as a backyard.
In 1904, then US president Theodore Roosevelt asserted that Washington had the right to intervene in Latin American nations to protect US and global financial interests. It led to numerous US military interventions in countries like the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua, often to protect American business interests. This kind of justification for US aggression was termed the Roosevelt Corollary, an apparent extension of the Monroe Doctrine.

Saudi Arabian GP: how to watch Formula 1 this weekend and times from Europe

0

This is when and where you can watch live the race in Jeddah.
Formula 1 continues on its Asian route this weekend with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, one of the youngest races of the calendar, first held in 2021. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit finds the season still in an early stage, with no clear favourites. although some shy voices are starting to say that, in fact, Oscar Piastri should be not ruled out despite his young age and should be considered favourite for the driver’s title, performing better than Max Verstappen, his teammate at McLaren Lando Norris, and certainly better than Lewis Hamilton, still getting used to Ferrari.
Thus, there still a lot of uncertainty and excitement about this season, still wide open, although dominated by the McLaren boys, Norris (77 points) and Piastri (74 points), followed by Verstappen (69 points), George Russel (63 points) and Charles Leclerc (63 points). Behind them, a 30 point gap with Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix starts first practice at 14:30 BST, 15:30 CEST, on Friday April 18, followed by the second practice at 18:00 BST, 19:00 CEST. Third and final practice will be on Saturday April 19 at 14:30 BST, 15:30 CEST.
As usual, Formula 1 is usually restricted to paid channels. This is a list of official Formula 1 broadcasts in some European markets, but you can check the full list on F1.com.

Researchers develop Graphene Oxide membrane that could be used to create 'forever chemical'-busting water filter. Yes, another funky use for the wonder material

0

«This breakthrough in PFAS filtration has the potential to revolutionise how PFAS contamination is managed globally.»
As someone who’s been writing about cool developments in the tech space for far too long now, I’m quite familiar with graphene. I can’t go a few months without reading about some new use for this miraculous substance. Whether you’re wanting to make super thin almost immediately rechargeable batteries, create tiny hard drives with massive storage capacity, or mimic human synapses, graphene is your go-to-guy. Now a team of researchers from Australia’s Monash University have developed a graphene water filter that just might change the world.
Over the course of our lifetimes we consume a lot of stuff that really isn’t fond of the human body. It’s a human tradition. For our forefathers it was things like lead, coal dust, asbestos, and now we have microplastics and PFAS; things often referred to as forever chemicals because they just don’t leave or break down, and instead prefer to build up inside our flesh vessels.
PFAS are a big problem. They are a man-made chemical used in heat resistance and fire extinguishing chemicals quite widely, which has led to their buildup in places like waterways that provide drinking water. PFAS molecules have proved to be slippery little suckers, and traditional filters have only been able to remove about 35% of them, leaving the rest to keep flowing right into our taps.
«PFAS are difficult to manage because they dissolve easily in water and can spread far from their original source, making contamination challenging to contain and remediate. Removing small PFAS molecules from water has been a major hurdle for existing filters», explains Monash PhD candidate, Eubert Mahofa.
«Our approach solves this by filtering out and concentrating these harmful chemicals while still allowing water to flow through efficiently, making it a strong candidate to supplement the technologies for PFAS destruction.»
The new beta-cyclodextrin (βCD) modified graphene oxide (GO-βCD) membrane with nanoscale channels developed by the researchers at monash is a game changer for this. Not only has the team managed to filter closer to 90% of PFAS in tests, they can also alter the graphene filter to selectively retain specific PFAS, and potentially other chemicals to deliver cleaner water.
«This breakthrough in PFAS filtration has the potential to revolutionise how PFAS contamination is managed globally, with applications ranging from landfill leachate treatment to industrial wastewater purification», says Professor Mainak Majumder, Director of the Australian Research Council’s Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing with 2D Materials.
«Our technology opens new possibilities for developing advanced nanofiltration membranes tailored to remove specific molecular species by selecting appropriate binding chemistries.»
Not only can it be calibrated, but thanks to the shear alignment printing technique used it should also be easy to scale up for use on large projects. Hopefully this means we’ll see the technology implemented to benefit communities large and small as soon as it’s deemed safe to do so. In the meantime, that’s still one more win for graphene, I can’t wait to see what miracles researchers can work with it next.

Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison reportedly turned down lead Star Wars role

0

She was apparently given a starring role in the upcoming Shawn Levy Star Wars film.
Anora star Mikey Madison reportedly turned down a role in an upcoming Star Wars project. It is believed she was offered a major part in Shawn Levy’s standalone Star Wars film, which is currently set to star Ryan Gosling.
Madison recently won her first Oscar for her role in Anora, in which she plays an exotic dancer who begins a relationship with the son of a Russian oligarch. In the Variety report, it isn’t made clear why Madison may have turned down the role in the movie.
Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie is currently being written, and will be a separate, standalone feature from the sequel trilogy. Starring Ryan Gosling, plot details have remained incredibly mysterious, but it is slated to release some time after The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will hit our screens next year.

George R.R. Martin: "The Winds of Winter is the great curse of my life"

0

Nearly 15 years since the release of A Dance with Dragons, the next book still has no release date.
Will we ever get to read the sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire? Fans of the series have become accustomed to waiting. But work on the penultimate book, The Winds of Winter, continues to drag on and it is now 14 years since A Dance With Dragons was launched. Martin himself is of course very aware of the situation and in a new interview he calls it the greatest curse of his life. But he also recognises that progress is being made, albeit very slowly.
«That’s the curse of my life here. There’s no doubt Winds of Winter is 13 years late. I’m still working on it. I have periods where I make progress and then other things divert my attention»
His involvement in all sorts of side projects has been identified by many as one of the biggest problems, but Martin himself says that this has not had a major impact on the writing process.
When do you think The Winds of Winter will be finalised?

RuneScape: Dragonwilds — How To Get Clean Water

0

Drinking clean water is an important aspect of surviving the forgotten continent of Ashenfall in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an Open World Survival game where players have to gather, build, fight, and craft to survive on the forgotten continent of Ashenfall. Like any other Crafting Survival game, your character will have a couple of meters that indicate their daily needs. In RuneScape: Dragonwilds, they’re stamina, hunger, and thirst meters.
In order for your character to survive Ashenfall, you need to stay on top of these three needs, making sure their meters are always filled. You need to rest to fill your Stamina meter, eat to fill the hunger meter, and drink water to fill your thirst meter. However, not every source of water in Ashenfall is pure. So, here’s how to get clean water in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
How To Get Clean Water in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

To get clean water in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, you have to purify dirty water. First, go to a nearby river or a lake and press the collect water button to obtain dirty water.
However, keep in mind that drinking dirty water is not ideal. While it slightly fills the character’s thirst meter, it also slowly poisons them. So, it’s better for the character to find a way to purify the water before drinking it in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
You should find a source of fire to purify water in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The earliest source of fire is building a campfire that cost nine ash logs and four stones. It also needs to be exposed, which means the character can’t build it inside a shelter. You can easily collect stones and ash logs from all over the forest areas without having to craft a stone Pickaxe and a stone Logging Axe to chop trees and mine stones.
Build the campfire and place ash logs inside it to light up its fire. You always want to add ash logs inside the campfire to cook or purify anything. After that, drag the dirty water to the empty box above the ash log. Press the play button, and the campfire will start processing clean water.
Now that your character has clean water in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, they can drink it without risking poisoning themselves.

The next Frostpunk game will launch in 2027

0

Considering Frostpunk 2 launched last year, that’s quite a fast turnaround.
Mixing story, strategy, and survival, the Frostpunk games are a different kind of settlement manager, where you’ll have to try and keep a city alive in the midst of a totally frozen wasteland. Both Frostpunk and its sequel have proven to be very popular, and 11 bit Studios is planning another game in the not-so-distant future.
Via the company’s quarterly earnings report, 11 bit Studios revealed that Frostpunk 2 is just now being monetised, with hopes that future DLCs can impress fans further. Still, there are plans for the future of the franchise.
11 bit’s president Przemysław Marszał said that there are plans to «launch as early as 2027» for the next title in the Frostpunk universe. It’s worth noting that he also makes mention of a larger-scale title in the works for 2029, so perhaps this upcoming game isn’t Frostpunk 3.
Instead, we could be looking at a spin-off that takes a look at the Frostpunk world through a new lens. We’ll have to wait and see, but we’ve only got a couple of years to wait, by the looks of things.
Frostpunk 2 is out now on PC, with a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release coming later this year.
