Browns name Dillon Gabriel starting quarterback for Week 5

0

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named the starter ahead of the team’s London game against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Cleveland Browns made a change at the quarterback position on Wednesday ahead of the team’s Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Browns announced that rookie Dillon Gabriel will start at quarterback over Joe Flacco.
Cleveland selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Oregon standout tied an FBS all-time record for most touchdown passes. He battled with Kenny Pickett and Shedeur Sanders to earn the backup job in training camp.
Gabriel received some action already this season. In the 10 snaps he’s played, he is 3-for-4 with a touchdown pass and 19 passing yards.
Flacco, a Super Bowl champion, has gone without a touchdown pass in the last two games and has three interceptions in that span. The veteran quarterback has 815 passing yards, two touchdown passes and six interceptions through the first four weeks of the season.
It appears Sanders will continue to be third on the Browns’ depth chart. The Browns selected him in the fifth round of the draft out of Colorado. Sanders made eyebrow-raising comments last week in an interview with ESPN Cleveland.
«I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that», he said.
Sanders said he has been preparing as if he could be called upon at any moment.
«I don’t think playing or not playing is in my hands. I think, based on the situation, if things pan out where I play, then I’ll be out there ready to play. I’m ready to play right now», he said.
«I focus each and every day on what I gotta do, and just because of where I am on the depth, I don’t let that dictate my mindset each and every day. You don’t know what can happen or could happen. So, it’s really just keeping the mindset of staying locked in and staying into everything. Remaining focused on the same thing.»
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Sanders.
The Browns and Vikings will play in London on Sunday.

Co gdyby Tusk ustąpił? Polacy mają swojego faworyta

Radosław Sikorski zdecydowanie prowadzi wśród potencjalnych następców Tuska. Pozostali politycy rządzącej koalicji muszą się postarać, aby go dogonić.
Wicepremiera i ministra spraw zagranicznych wskazało 41 proc. badanych.
Badanie z podobnym pytaniem — „Jeśli Donald Tusk zrezygnowałby z funkcji premiera, kto powinien go zastąpić i stanąć na czele rządu?”
Kolejne miejsce i 16,6 proc. wskazań przypadło Rafałowi Trzaskowskiemu. 8,8 proc. badanych wytypowało Władysława Kosiniaka-Kamysza, 7,3 proc. Szymona Hołownię, a 3 proc. Włodzimierza Czarzastego.

Google's New Smart Speaker Promises to Power a Voice Assistant That Doesn't Suck

0

Gemini for Home needs a new speaker to make Google’s next-gen voice assistant actually feel new.
It’s been five long years since Google last released the Nest Audio smart speaker, but here we are. Today, Google unveiled the Google Home Speaker, which comes with upgraded hardware designed specifically to power a new generation of Gemini-run AI in your home.
According to Google, the Home Speaker comes with “custom processing to handle Gemini’s advanced
AI for faster, more fluid interactions,” which basically just means it’s designed to run Gemini for Home, its new (hopefully more intelligent) generation of voice assistant. What kinds of new-fangled things will you be doing with Gemini for Home, you ask? Well, in addition to your run-of-the-mill voice commands, you’ll also be able to use Gemini Live, which is a conversational Gemini feature that allows a quicker back-and-forth without having to use a wake word.
Unlike the Google Assistant of yore, Google envisions its Gemini Live experience as helping you in real-time with tasks like buying a new car, cooking an impromptu recipe, or fixing your dishwasher (these are all real examples from Google). Whether you’ll use the smart speaker for those things is another question entirely, but Google certainly hopes you’ll try. Google also says its new home assistant will be able to understand more nuanced everyday commands like “turn all of the lights off except one,” or things that are more conditional and specific. I’ll believe this one when I see it! For context, older Google speakers will still be able to use Gemini for Home, but Google is saying that this is the speaker that’s actually optimized for it.
Hardware-wise, there are some upgrades here that may appeal to you, including 360-degree audio, which, according to Google, “plays sound in every direction, so you can enjoy uniform audio no matter where it’s placed in the room.” I haven’t had a chance to really test that out for myself, but it makes sense for Google to focus on that particular capability since smart speakers don’t always have the optimal placement for both audio playback and running your smart home.
Speaking of audio playback, Google is also introducing a feature that (like Amazon Echos and Apple’s HomePods) allows you to pair two of Home Speakers together for use as a home theater setup for stereo sound. The feature doesn’t sound anywhere near as robust as Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater that lets you group up to five Echos for one home theater, but let’s be honest, you’re not buying that many Google/Amazon speakers anyway.
On top of 360-degree sound and a new theater setup, there are also minor updates to the look, including a new indicator ring light at the bottom that lets you know when the Home Speaker is listening. Having something obvious to notify you when your Google Home Speaker is on is critical in this generation if Google intends to make Gemini Live a thing—you’re going to have to know when it’s your turn to speak and also when the speaker is “thinking” about something.
The look is also slightly different this generation. There are four new colors: Porcelain, Hazel, Jade, and Berry, and Google says the Home Speaker is made with recycled materials and the mesh is made via a “unique 3D knitting process that significantly reduces fabric waste.” This still looks like a Google smart speaker at the end of the day, but I definitely prefer it over Amazon’s Death Star look for its new Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio.
Whether the Google Home Speaker feels next-gen will depend (like previous generations) almost entirely on whether Gemini can make it smarter. As I’ve covered previously, Google Home has been in shambles as of late, and while the company has pushed out a lot of updates to get things back on track, I’m not sure they’ve made a material difference with the people who have built their smart homes around Google’s ecosystem. I’m one of those people who poured everything into Google smart speakers and its Google Home app, so I’m right here with you, hoping that this new hardware and new voice assistant finally give us the smart home we were promised.
So when can you buy the new Google Home Speaker? Well… we know it’ll cost $100, but Google’s only announcing today that availability will be “spring 2026.” If you were hoping to ask Santa for a new smart speaker (or two for stereo pairing), you may wanna ask for something else, cause it won’t be out this year.

Samsung just went all-in on OpenAI's AI future

0

A new strategic partnership covers advanced memory, data center construction, and even futuristic floating server farms.
Samsung and OpenAI announced a massive strategic partnership to build out AI data center infrastructure. The deal involves multiple Samsung divisions providing everything from advanced memory chips to building futuristic floating data centers.
In what is shaping up to be one of the biggest collaborations in the AI space, Samsung and OpenAI have signed a letter of intent for a massive strategic partnership. This isn’t your typical supplier-customer deal; this is a deep integration that pulls in the full force of the Samsung empire to build the next generation of AI infrastructure.
According to the press release, the partnership is expansive. Samsung Electronics will be a strategic memory partner, supplying advanced DRAM solutions for OpenAI’s ambitious global «Stargate» initiative. Samsung SDS will help design and operate these new AI data centers and resell OpenAI’s enterprise services in Korea. Perhaps the wildest part of the announcement involves Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries, who will work with OpenAI to develop futuristic floating data centers. Yes, you read that right—data centers on the water.
Let’s be clear: the race to build the physical infrastructure for AI is just as intense as the race to build the models themselves. For a while now, NVIDIA has been the undisputed king, with its GPUs powering nearly every major AI operation. Tech giants like Google and Microsoft are spending billions to build their own custom silicon and massive data centers to keep up.
This move by Samsung and OpenAI is a huge strategic play. Instead of just selling chips to everyone, Samsung is tying its fortunes to the company that is arguably at the very forefront of the AI wave.
By becoming a foundational partner for everything from memory and logic to the very buildings (or ships) the servers will live in, Samsung is positioning itself as an indispensable part of the AI future. The floating data center idea, while it sounds like something out of a sci-fi novel, is a clever attempt to tackle very real problems like land scarcity and the enormous cooling costs associated with these power-hungry AI clusters.
Personally, I think this is a genuinely massive deal. The sheer scale of what’s being proposed is staggering. For years, the conversation has been about who will supply the «picks and shovels» for the AI gold rush. This partnership cements Samsung as a top-tier provider, moving it beyond just a component supplier to a full-blown infrastructure partner. It’s a direct challenge to competitors and a major flex of Samsung’s power.
While the talk of floating data centers is sure to grab headlines, the core of this deal—the commitment to supply an enormous amount of high-performance memory for Project Stargate—is the real meat and potatoes. It shows that to compete at the highest level of AI, you need industrial giants who can do everything from fabricating silicon to building the ships the servers sit on. It’s an ambitious, bold move, and frankly, I’m excited to see how it all plays out.

FIFA World Cup 2026 tickets have gone on sale. Here’s how to try to get them

0

Buyers were selected from 4.5 million applicants in a lottery last month. FIFA says winners will be informed by email.
Not even half of the spots in the 48-team field have been claimed. The schedule of matches won’t be finalized until December. And other than host nations U.S., Canada and Mexico, nobody has any idea where or when they’ll be playing.
Millions of soccer fans worldwide evidently don’t seem to mind any of those points.
Tickets to next year’s FIFA World Cup officially go on sale Wednesday. The buyers will be those who were selected, out of 4.5 million applicants in a lottery that took place last month, to have the first formal chance to purchase tickets over the next few days. FIFA said lottery winners have been, or will soon be, informed by email.
There are unique questions for consumers heading into the tournament, particularly about how they’ll get visas, if necessary, to visit the U.S. as the country cracks down on immigration. There are also more traditional concerns such as who, when and where — and none of those will be answered until the draw on Dec. 5. FIFA knows many fans won’t fret about those answers; they just want tickets now and will figure out the rest later.
“These are not only outstanding figures, but also a strong statement,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on social media, reacting to the 4.5 million applicants for a spot in the purchase window that opened Wednesday. “The whole world wants to be part of the FIFA World Cup 26, the biggest, most inclusive and most exciting event ever. From Canada, Mexico and the United States, to countries big and small across every continent, fans are proving once again passion for football truly unites.”
In divided times, the notion of soccer being something that “truly unites” will be put to the test.
Here are some things to know as tickets go on sale. What’s for sale?
Fans can purchase seats in one of four categories; Category 1 is the best seats, Category 4 is somewhere around the tops of stadiums. Ticket prices will range initially from $60 for group-stage matches to $6,730 for the final but could — and almost certainly will — change as soccer’s biggest event utilizes dynamic pricing for the first time.
There are other ways to get tickets other than shelling out big bucks. American Airlines announced last month that its AAdvantage loyalty program members can redeem miles for World Cup tickets, starting Oct. 13 for executive platinum and concierge key members, then Oct. 14 for platinum pro, platinum and gold members, followed on Oct. 15 by all members.
And starting Thursday, some Verizon customers will have access to free World Cup tickets and other perks. The telecommunications giant is a World Cup sponsor and will simply start dropping free ticket chances to its customers through its app.
“For me, there are few things as exciting as experiencing football live, whether that’s on or off the pitch, and so I am proud to partner with Verizon to celebrate their plans to give fans unprecedented access to the tournament,” said soccer icon David Beckham, part of Verizon’s promotion for the World Cup.Who’s in?
The U.S., Mexico and Canada all automatically qualified as host nations. Also in so far: defending champion Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, Iran, Uzbekistan, Jordan, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Tunisia, Colombia, Paraguay and Morocco.
That leaves 30 spots still unclaimed.
FIFA said fans from 216 countries and territories applied to be part of the first ticket lottery. The top three nations of interest, to no surprise, were the hosts: the U.S., Mexico and Canada, in that order. The rest of the top 10, also in order of application totals: Germany, England, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Italy.
Nobody has said how many tickets FIFA plans to sell in this first window. Availability won’t be depleted; based on the listed stadium attendance figures, there are roughly 7.1 million seats to fill for the 104 matches around 16 North American venues, though it’s unknown how many of those seats will be available for sale to the public. Will visitors travel to the US?
There is an immigration crackdown unfolding across the U.S., which could dampen overseas interest in traveling to the country. U.S. tourism officials already have noted a drop in overseas visitors this year and even organizers in some U.S. host cities have acknowledged that political dynamics may have an impact on attendance.
Adding to some of the uncertainty, President Donald Trump, who has a close relationship with Infantino, has suggested that the host cities could be changed if he wants to move some events away from places his administration considers unsafe.
The U.S. cities that are scheduled to host are East Rutherford, New Jersey; Inglewood, California; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Houston; Arlington, Texas; Atlanta; Seattle; Santa Clara, California; Philadelphia; Kansas City, Missouri; and Miami Gardens, Florida.
“If any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup … we won’t allow it to go there,” Trump said last week. “We’ll move it around a little bit. But I hope that’s not going to happen.”
The State Department says that “the safety and security of the United States” along with “World Cup matches, athletes, fans, and venues” are the top priorities with regard to its role in the World Cup process. It also suggests that travelers who need a visa should start applying now, and officials have said the U.S. is trying “to ensure an efficient, smooth, and effective visa process.”What’s next?
A second phase, called an early ticket draw, likely will run from Oct. 27-31, with purchase time slots from mid-November to early December. A third phase, termed a random selection draw, will start after the final draw of teams on Dec. 5 determines the World Cup schedule.
Tickets also will be available closer to the tournament “on a first-come, first-served basis.” FIFA also said it will start an official resale platform.
Some tickets already have been snagged; hospitality packages have been sold since May.
“The world will come together in North America,” Infantino promised, “like never before.”
The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19.
