President Donald Trump threatened to send American troops to Mexico to take care of “bad hombres” in a Friday call with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, the Associated Press reports.
“You have a bunch of bad hombres down there,” Trump told the Mexican president in the excerpt provided to the AP. “You aren’t doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn’t, so I just might send them down to take care of it.”
Trump described the call with Mexico as “very good” last Friday. Although Trump added that Mexico has made the US “look foolish” and that he is seeking a “new relationship” with the border nation.
A White House official told CNN after the AP story broke that “reports that the President threatened to invade Mexico are false. Even the Mexican government is disputing these reports.”
CNN later reported that Trump told Peña Nieto: “You have some pretty tough hombres in Mexico that you may need help with. We are willing to help with that big-league, but they have be knocked out and you have not done a good job knocking them out.”
The CNN report says that this is the direct transcript and that the AP relied on the official internal readout of the call.
Dolia Estevez, a Mexican journalist, reported on the confrontational call before the AP did. She told a Mexican news outlet, Aristequi Noticias, that the call was a “very offensive conversation where Trump humiliated Peña Nieto.”
The Mexican journalist, citing multiple sources, said that Peña Nieto was “stammering” during the phone conversation with Trump. “I don’t need the Mexicans. I don’t need Mexico,” Trump told the Mexican president, according to Estevez, and he added that Mexico will indeed pay for the border wall.
Mexico’s foreign ministry denied Estevez’s account and said in a statement that the tone of the call was “constructive.”
The relationship between the U. S. and Mexico has been strained since President Trump took office. He has continued to vow that Mexico will pay for a border wall either via a tax on imports, or through other “complicated” means. Peña Nieto subsequently cancelled a scheduled visit to Washington due to Trump’s insistence that Mexico will pay for the wall, as he finds it offensive to Mexico’s sovereignty.

UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulos says officials are advising the campus to shelter in place and to stay away from the student union building, where Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak.
The Berkeley police tweeted that the campus was “on lockdown” due to the protests, and advised students to stay indoors.
With masked activists joining the already large group of protesters gathered in the area between Sather Gate and the north end of Telegraph Avenue as night fell, campus police were holding their positions near the entrance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union building hosting the event.
As the gathered crowd got more agitated, masked “black bloc” activists began hurling projectiles including bricks, lit fireworks and rocks at the building and police.
Some used police barriers as battering rams to attack the doors of the venue, breaching at least one of the doors and entering the venue on the first floor.
In addition to fireworks being thrown up onto the second-floor balcony, fires were lit outside the venue, including one that engulfed a gas-powered portable floodlight.
The area on Upper Sproul Plaza grew thick with smoke, and later tear gas, as the protest intensified.
Hundreds of protesters were observed at Wednesday evening’s event, CBS San Francisco reports. Over 2,100 people responded to a Facebook post that they would be attending.

Yiannopoulos was making the last stop of a tour aimed at defying what he calls an epidemic of political correctness on college campuses.
This is not the first time there has been violence at one of the events from the tour. A person was shot in the crowd outside Yiannopoulos’ event in Seattle on Jan. 21. An event with Yiannopoulous and former pharmacy executive Martin Shkreli at UC Davis was canceled after protests.

At the heart of the weekend conversation between Mr. Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was a deal struck with the Obama administration that would allow mostly Muslim refugees rejected by Australia to be resettled in the United States.
Late Wednesday evening, Mr. Trump tweeted a complaint about the deal, referring to the 1,250 refugees that were agreed upon in the deal as “thousands.”
Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!
Turnbull declined to comment on reports in The Washington Post that the president had described the agreement as “the worst deal ever” and accused Turnbull of seeking to export the “next Boston bombers.”
Turnbull also would not say whether Mr. Trump had abruptly ended the expected hour-long conversation after 25 minutes as the Australian attempted to steer the conversation to other topics.
“It’s better that these things — these conversations — are conducted candidly, frankly, privately,” Turnbull told reporters.
Turnbull did, however, tell reporters about what Mr. Trump said about the refugee agreement.
“The President assured me that he would continue with, honor the agreement we entered into with the Obama administration with respect to refugee resettlement,” Turnbull said.
Under the agreement, refugees from among around 1,600 asylum seekers, most of whom are on island camps on the Pacific nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea, would be resettled in the U. S. Australia has refused to accept them and instead pays for them to be housed on the impoverished islands.
“I can assure you the relationship is very strong,” Turnbull said. “The fact we received the assurance that we did, the fact that it was confirmed, the very extensive engagement we have with the new administration underlines the closeness of the alliance. But as Australians know me very well: I stand up for Australia in every forum — public or private.”
The Washington Post story immediately shot to the top of trending topics on Twitter in Australia. It was plastered across the top of Australia’s major news sites, and the nation’s news networks launched into lengthy, running commentaries on it.

President Trump, who a day before the conversation had signed an executive order suspending the admission of refugees , had complained that he was “going to get killed” politically by the deal, the newspaper reported, citing anonymous officials.
“I don’t want these people,” Mr. Trump reportedly said. He also told Turnbull that he had spoken to four world leaders that day and “This is the worst call by far.” Among the other world leaders Mr. Trump spoke with that day was Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The president told Turnbull that it was “my intention” to honor the agreement, a phrase designed to leave the president wriggle room to back out of the deal, the newspaper reported.
There were some mixed-messages from Washington this week on the state of the agreement.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer confirmed on Wednesday that Mr. Trump had agreed to honor the deal.
But a White House statement sent to Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Thursday said: “The president is still considering whether or not he will move forward with this deal at this time.”
The U. S. State Department said in a statement later Thursday that the United States would honor the agreement “out of respect for close ties to our Australian ally and friend.”
“President Trump’s decision to honor the refugee agreement has not changed and Spokesman Spicer’s comments stand,” the State Department said.
The ABC spoke to senior Australian government sources who said The Washington Post report was “substantially accurate.”
Australian officials said the conversation was “robust” and “shorter than expected,” while one minister has told the ABC that “Trump hates this deal.”
Opposition leader Bill Shorten called on Turnbull to be open about his interaction with Mr. Trump, saying The Washington Post version of the call was worrying.
“We shouldn’t be finding out about what’s happening to Australian policy through the news of foreign countries,” Shorten said. “I think our own prime minister should be telling us straight what’s going on.”
Turnbull has likened himself to President Trump in that both are wealthy businessmen who came to politics late in life. Turnbull also has a reputation for blunt conversation and tough negotiations behind closed doors.
Turnbull has resisted pressure this week to join other Western leaders in condemning Trump’s temporary ban of immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries.
“When I have frank advice to give to an American president, I give it privately, as good friends should, as wise prime ministers do when they want to ensure they are best able to protect Australians and Australia’s national interest,” Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday.
Some observers suspect Turnbull has held his tongue because he is grateful to the president for agreeing to honor the refugee deal.

Rex Tillerson was sworn in as secretary of state by Vice President Mike Pence in a ceremony presided over by President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday evening.
Before Tillerson was sworn in, Mr. Trump spoke briefly in the Oval Office.
“Time to take a fresh look at the world around us and seek new solutions grounded in very ancient truths — these truths include the fact that nations have a right to protect their interest, that all people have a right to freely pursue their own destiny and that all of us are better off when we work in concert and not in conflict,” Mr. Trump said. “And there’s rarely been conflict like we have in the world today and it’s very sad.”
In a tweet, Mr. Trump congratulated Tillerson and said he is very excited for him, his family and the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Senate confirmed Tillerson to serve as the Trump administration’s secretary of state, making him the sixth Cabinet nominee to be approved on Capitol Hill.
Tillerson was approved in a 56-43 vote with all 52 Republicans, as well as four Democrats, voting in favor. The remaining 43 Democrats opposed Tillerson. One senator, Chris Coons (D-Delaware), did not vote.
Rex Tillerson was sworn in on Wednesday night as secretary of state.
This came about a week after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted along party lines 11-10 to advance his nomination to the floor. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, joined other skeptical Republicans like Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina in backing Tillerson to serve as the nation’s next top diplomat.
Last month, Tillerson testified at his Senate confirmation hearing about his possible conflicts involving ExxonMobil, his position regarding U. S. sanctions against Russia and his views on climate change.
Tillerson, 64, acknowledged that he would become the nation’s chief diplomat at a “pivotal time” and listed a number of “considerable threats” that the U. S. faces, including Russia. He said, “We aren’t likely to ever be friends…our value systems are starkly different.”
