Brazil prison system sees fresh round of violence

0

NewsHubFour people have been killed in a prison in the Brazilian city of Manaus in another round of clashes between rival gangs.
Three of the victims at the Vidal Pessoa jail in the city centre were decapitated.
The prison was reopened to house prisoners from a jail where 56 prisoners died in a riot last week.
Officials say the prison violence in the state is part of a war between rival gangs over the drug trade.
It has spread to other state prisons; in neighbouring Roraima state, 33 people were killed in clashes on Friday.
Why are Brazil’s jails so violent?
Brazil’s plans for jails
The escalating feud is between Brazil’s biggest drug gangs who ended two decades of an uneasy working relationship six months ago.
The largest and most powerful gang, the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) split with the Rio de Janeiro-based Red Command when the PCC took over drug trading routes in the south-east of the country.
Members of the PCC were targeted last Sunday in the first violent outbreak at a jail on the outskirts of Manaus.
The death toll of 56 made it the most violent jail riot in Brazil for decades.
Five days later, PCC members killed 33 people at a state prison Roraima state.
Mobile phone video shared on social media showed inmates hacking at bodies in acts of revenge.
Experts say the PCC is moving to infiltrate areas in the Red Command’s home base of Rio and infiltrating Brazil’s Amazon region to control cocaine-smuggling river routes.
Since it split from the PCC, the Red Command has allied itself with the smaller northern regional gang, the North Family.
The government has till now used a policy of transferring gang leaders and members to jails distant from their operating territories.
Human rights agencies have argued that the measures have had little effect and have called for a programme of capital spending to relieve chronic overcrowding and appalling conditions in the country’s jails.
At the request of several of the northern states governors, the Brazilian government has promised a new prison building programme to deal with the overcrowding and extra security personnel to try to quell the mounting violence.

The Latest: Mom arraigned in teen girl dismemberment death

NewsHubThe Latest on charges filed against an adoptive mother and her boyfriend in a teen dismemberment case (all times local):
2 p.m.
A Pennsylvania woman whose dismembered 14-year-old adopted daughter’s remains were found in the woods last fall has been arraigned on charges she killed the girl as part of a «rape-murder fantasy» she shared with her boyfriend.
Sara Packer was arraigned Sunday on charges including criminal homicide, rape and abuse of a corpse. Her boyfriend, Jacob Sullivan, was arraigned on similar charges hours earlier.
Officials say 14-year-old Grace Packer was beaten, raped as her mother watched, poisoned and hours later strangled a stifling attic in July. They say the couple stored Grace’s body there, dismembered it in October and dumped it in a park.
Packer has been ordered held without bail and is to be transferred to Bucks County Prison.
The couple didn’t enter pleas. No attorney information for either is available.

A Pennsylvania woman whose dismembered 14-year-old daughter’s remains were found in the woods last fall has been charged along with her boyfriend with killing the girl in what officials are calling a «rape-murder fantasy» the couple shared.
Sara Packer and Jacob Sullivan face nearly two dozen charges including criminal homicide, rape and abuse of a corpse. Jacob Sullivan was arraigned early Sunday; Packer is awaiting arraignment.
As Sullivan was taken into court Sunday, he told reporters he was sorry for what he did to Grace Packer. Grace was the adopted daughter of Packer.
Officials say Grace was beaten, raped, poisoned and left for dead in an attic in July. They say they couple stored Grace’s body there and dismembered it in October.

Iraq: Suicide attacks rock Baghdad killing at least 20

Sunday, 08 January 2017 13:07
Bombers strike Shia areas in Iraq’s capital also wounding 50 others with one attack claimed by the armed group ISIL.
Suicide bombings at two marketplaces in eastern Baghdad killed at least 20 people — the latest in a spate of attacks in the Iraqi capital that have left dozens dead in recent days.
In the first blast claimed by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the attacker drove an explosives-rigged car into a vegetable market in the mainly Shia district of Jamila and detonated it, killing at least 13 people, police said.
A suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest blew himself up a few hours later at a market in the mostly Shia district of Baladiyat, killing another seven people.
Both attacks wounded at least 50 people.
ISIL claimed the first attack in an online statement saying the bomber had targeted «a gathering of Shias» in Jamila.
Jamila is the main wholesale vegetable market in Baghdad and lies in Sadr City, which has been repeatedly targeted.
A series of attacks in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities have killed more than 80 people in just over a week.
Several have been claimed by ISIL, also known as ISIS, which is coming under increasing pressure from a military offensive in Mosul, its last major stronghold in Iraq.
On January 2, also in Sadr City, a suicide bomber blew up a vehicle packed with explosives among a crowd of day labourers waiting for work, killing 35 people.
In July 2016, an ISIL car bombing at a shopping district during Ramadan killed almost 300 people, the worst such attack in years .

Sources: Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Suspect Picked Location At Random

0

NewsHubFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBSNewYork) — Law enforcement sources have told CBS2 that Fort Lauderdale airport shooting suspect Esteban Santiago-Ruiz picked the Florida airport at random and did not have any prior linkage to that airport.
Suspected Fort Lauderdale Shooter Esteban Santiago-Ruiz: Five Fast Facts
As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported from Fort Lauderdale, the shooting was reported just before 1 p.m. Friday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2, which is used by Delta Airlines and Air Canada.
Five people were killed, and several others were injured.
Santiago was arrested without incident after the shooting and was in police custody Friday night. Sources said there was no nexus to terrorism with the shooter, but terrorism has not been ruled out as a motive.
Santiago-Ruiz, 26, was born in New Jersey, law enforcement sources told CBS News. Santiago-Ruiz spent most of his time in Puerto Rico before going to Anchorage, Alaska.
Sources told CBS News a man meeting Santiago-Ruiz’s description , and who is believed to have been Santiago-Ruiz, walked into FBI offices in Anchorage two months ago and said the government was forcing him to watch ISIS videos. Agents were apparently so concerned about him they took him to a mental health facility, CBS News’ Scott Pelley reported.
Sources also told CBS2 the 9mm handgun Santiago-Ruiz had when he walked into the FBI office in Anchorage is the same weapon he allegedly used in the Fort Lauderdale attack.
Senator Chuck Schumer says after the attack, its clear that the front lines of security at airports needs to extend throughout the entire facility — not just the point after the check in desk, WCBS 880’s Mike Smeltz reported.
“We’ve been very secure on the other side, we gotta make this side secure,” Schumer said. “We thought after 9/11 we couldn’t stop what they did — we’ve done a pretty good job, knock [on] wood.”
Schumer also says gun laws need to strengthen, specifically in this case where the suspected shooter is reported to have suffered from mental health issues, but was legally allowed to carry a gun.
Sources say the investigation into the incident is still in its early stages and officials are looking to speak to anyone who may have known or been in contact with Santiago before the attack.
Investigators are also reviewing Santiago’s communication and financial records.
Santiago-Ruiz will be charged federally and is expected to appear in court in South Florida on Monday.

Former Iran president and leading reformer Rafsanjani dies of heart attack

0

NewsHubFormer Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died on Sunday at the age of 82, state media reported, a big blow to moderates and reformists deprived now of their most influential supporter in the Islamic establishment.
«Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was taken to hospital after heart attack and more than an hour long efforts by doctors to revive him were not successful,» the deputy minister of health was quoted by Fars news agency as saying.
Residents said a crowd gathered outside the hospital in northern Tehran where Rafsanjani was taken.
In a sign of mourning, state television channels carried a black banner on a corner of screen.
Mehdi, the imprisoned son of Hashemi who is in jail on corruption charges, attended the hospital to say goodbye to the body of his father. He was escorted out by police.
Rafsanjani was an influential figure in Iran , and headed the Expediency Council, a body which is intended to resolve disputes between the parliament and the Guardian Council. He was also a member of the Assembly of Experts, the clerical body that selects the supreme leader, Iran’s most powerful figure.
Rafsanjani has been described as «a pillar of the Islamic revolution. » His pragmatic policies — economic liberalization, better relations with the West and empowering Iran’s elected bodies — appealed to many Iranians but was despised by hardliners.
His death is a big blow to moderate president Hassan Rouhani five months before a presidential election.
Since 2009 he and his family have faced criticism over their support for the opposition movement which lost that year’s disputed election to former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
His funeral will be held in Tehran on Tuesday, his relative and aide Hossein Marashi was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Aston Villa

0

NewsHubBy Tom Rostance
BBC Sport
Ben Davies scored his first goal for Tottenham as the eight-time winners ground out an FA Cup third-round win over a stubborn Aston Villa side.
After a dreadful first-half showing, Spurs improved and the Wales left-back found the breakthrough against their Championship opponents with a deft header.
Son Heung-min then wrapped up the victory when he converted Moussa Sissoko’s pass to put Mauricio Pochettino’s side in Monday’s fourth-round draw.
Tottenham have moved into third place in the Premier League on the back of a five-match winning run, but their second string struggled to click against a Villa side set out to frustrate.
Without the rested Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen, the hosts were short of ideas and the tie looked destined for a replay until unlikely goalscorer Davies arrived inside the penalty area.
Villa mustered one shot on target all game and Steve Bruce will now turn his attention to overhauling a seven-point gap to the Championship play-off places.
Tottenham were excellent in beating Premier League leaders Chelsea 2-0 in midweek but, perhaps unsurprisingly, were nowhere near that level in the opening hour.
Of the XI who started against Chelsea, only Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier kept their places — and it showed.
Alli, Kane and Eriksen had contributed 30 of Spurs’ 51 goals this season, and 11 of 33 assists, before kick-off and without them Pochettino’s side looked toothless.
Stand-in striker Vincent Janssen, who has scored just three penalties in 23 appearances now, was particularly lightweight and it was only when Alli finally replaced him after an hour that Tottenham found a way through.
It was another replacement, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, who crossed for Davies to head home before Son — who had moved up front once Janssen went off — buried the second.
A top-four finish remains Pochettino’s most pressing assignment but, after a dismal Champions League campaign, a first FA Cup win since 1991 is also surely high on his list.
Villa were beaten FA Cup finalists in 2015 and Bruce took Hull to Wembley a year earlier, but a repeat never looked likely as the visitors effectively played with a back six for large periods.
With top goalscorer Jonathan Kodjia away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, they posed little threat and their only real chance came when James Chester and then Gabriel Agbonlahor had shots blocked from the same free-kick.
A return to league duty now awaits. Villa were 19th when Bruce took charge in October, but after just three defeats in 14 games since they could challenge for a place in the play-offs.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: «It’s always difficult in the FA Cup, but we played a team that had very good organisation and it was tough to break them. We had lots of possession and a lot of patience to try and build from the back.
«At 0-0 we changed the system a bit to try and change the game and from that we scored.
«I’m pleased for the players that haven’t played too much, it’s important for them to build their confidence. »
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce: «We had to defend well and run a million miles because they are a very good side. We had a big chance in the game.
«I was a touch disappointed with the goal because they didn’t have to do much — one cross into the box and we didn’t deal with it.
«You need your goalkeeper to play well and Sam Johnstone looks a very good young goalkeeper — I think he’ll relish the challenge to play week in, week out.
«They are a very good side and that has to be the aspiration for us at Aston Villa. »
Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas
This year Tottenham have taken Manchester City to the cleaners, beaten Chelsea and were the better team against Manchester United for 60 minutes.
A trophy is the obvious thing they are missing. The big thing Mauricio Pochettino has changed is the mentality. It’s about delivering it now.
Former England captain Alan Shearer
Vincent Janssen is making life far too easy for defenders. He keeps coming towards the ball instead of getting into the six-yard box where he could actually score goals.
He is taking the easy way out and he looks to me that he is frightened of missing chances.
Unless he starts getting into the right areas, he is not going to score goals.

Dolphins' Moore: No concussion, 'just got smoked'

0

NewsHubPITTSBURGH — Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore said he got «smoked» by Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree in Miami’s playoff loss to Pittsburgh, but that he didn’t suffer a concussion.
He said he was more worried about whether he still had all his teeth.
Moore was hit high by Dupree in the second quarter and stayed on the ground for more than 2 minutes, talking to the Steelers medical staff. He went to the sideline and was briefly replaced by backup quarterback T. J. Yates. Then he put his helmet on and was back in the game, less than 5 minutes after the hit. He said he knew he hadn’t suffered a concussion.
Editor’s Picks Dolphins’ playoff run was brief, but their future is bright
The Dolphins overachieved this season despite injuries to players such as Tannehill, and their biggest need going forward might be outside linebacker.
«I just really needed a second,» he said. «Obviously, with all the protocols you see the doctor and do all that. It was fine. »
After the game the Dolphins released a statement saying, «Matt Moore was evaluated and cleared by the unaffiliated neurological consultant and team physician before entering the game. »
Moore said he only felt pain in his back and chin after the hit. He wouldn’t go as far as to say Dupree’s hit was dirty. Dupree was flagged on the play.
Dupree said after the game that he hoped he didn’t get fined for the hit.
«It was a clean hit. Super clean… I hit in the chest area, facemask to the chest. We’ll see what Roger [Goodell] says,» Dupree told ESPN’s Josina Anderson after the game. «I understand why there was still a flag. But we should go through the appeal process and get everything alright. »
Overall it was a rough day for Moore. He threw for 289 yards and a touchdown but also had three turnovers, which included two fumbles and one interception.
It was Moore’s first career playoff start for the Dolphins (10-7) after serving most of his previous 10 seasons as a backup.

College Football Playoff championship game, quickly

NFL playoffs: Patriots will host Texans

0

NewsHubThere will be a familiar feel to the NFL playoffs next weekend: Every divisional-round game will be a rematch from the regular season, the first time that’s happened in six years.
In the AFC, it’s the Houston Texans playing as huge underdogs at New England, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City. In the NFC, it’s the Green Bay Packers at the Dallas Cowboys, and the Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta.
The first time around, New England beat Houston 27-0 in Week 3 with third-string rookie Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, Pittsburgh beat Kansas City 43-14 in Week 4, Dallas beat Green Bay 30-16 in Week 6, and Seattle beat Atlanta 26-24 in Week 6.
Not that those results necessarily mean much now, especially because none was more recent than October.
New England is one of the biggest betting favorites in a playoff game – a 16-point favorite – and here’s why: Bill Belichick’s Patriots have outscored protege Bill O’Brien’s Texans by a combined 54-6 in their last two head-to-head games.
As good as Houston’s top-ranked defense has been – Jadeveon Clowney’s interception set the tone for a 27-14 win over Oakland in the wild-card round – there is a world of difference between facing a rookie QB making his first NFL start (Oakland’s Connor Cook) and a three-time Super Bowl MVP (New England’s Tom Brady). And Belichick will surely dream up some schemes to bedevil Texans QB Brock Osweiler, who was held to 196 yards passing by the Patriots in their September meeting.
Osweiler lost his starting job late in the regular season, only to regain it when Tom Savage suffered a concussion in the season finale. Osweiler finished the regular season with 15 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions, and Texans averaged only 17.4 points per game – tied for 28th in the NFL. Their 279 points are the fewest by a playoff team since the Bears scored only 260 points in 2005.
STEELERS at CHIEFS: The Steelers know how much things can change over the course of a season, having already avenged a regular-season loss to Miami.
Now it’ll be the Chiefs who have a shot at redemption.
“What happened during the regular season is of little importance,” Pittsburgh Coach Mike Tomlin said.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger needed a walking boot after hurting his right foot against Miami. If he’s fine next week, it will be fun to watch him, wide receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le’Veon Bell take on Marcus Peters, Eric Berry and the rest of Kansas City’s formidable defense.
On the other side of the ball, Steelers linebacker James Harrison and his teammates should be able to handle Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, but the question is how Pittsburgh’s defense and special teams will corral rookie speedster Tyreek Hill.
PACKERS at COWBOYS: That loss to Dallas nearly three months ago was part of Green Bay’s 4-6 start. But ever since quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke about trying to “run the table,” NFC North champion Green Bay has won seven consecutive games, including 38-13 over the New York Giants in the wild-card round.
Rodgers has 19 TD passes and zero interceptions during the streak, but one question now is whether favorite target Jordy Nelson, hurt against the Giants, will be available.
Green Bay’s pass defense, shaky and beset by injuries, might not have an easy time against Dallas QB Dak Prescott, a preternaturally poised rookie who threw for three TDs in the October matchup. The No. 1-seeded Cowboys’ other first-year sensation, Ezekiel Elliott, gained 157 yards in his first game against the NFL’s eighth-best run defense.
SEAHAWKS at FALCONS: All-Pro quarterback Matt Ryan, a top MVP contender, and wideout Julio Jones lead NFC South champion Atlanta’s high-powered offense against NFC West champion Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense, which is missing injured safety Earl Thomas but still features Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor.
In the first meeting, Ryan threw for three TDs, while Jones finished with seven catches for 139 yards and a score. But most memorable was an incompletion on fourth down with 90 seconds left, when Sherman grabbed Jones’ arm on a deep pass but wasn’t called for interference.
It’s also worth monitoring how Atlanta’s so-so defense deals with Seattle’s offense. Falcons Coach Dan Quinn used to be Seattle’s defensive coordinator.
