AP News in Brief at 12: 04 a.m. EDT.
Trump’s trip: Conventional images and unconventional talk
TAORMINA, Sicily (AP) — As he dashed through the Middle East and Europe, Donald Trump looked like a conventional American leader abroad. He solemnly laid a wreath at a Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, had an audience with the pope at the Vatican and stood center stage with Western allies at the annual summits that dominate the diplomatic calendar.
But when Trump spoke, he sounded like anything but a typical U. S. president.
On his first overseas tour, the new president made no attempt to publicly promote democracy and human rights in Saudi Arabia, instead declaring that he wasn’t there to lecture. In Israel and the West Bank, he pointedly did not back America’s long-standing support for a two-state solution to the intractable peace process. And in the heart of Europe, Trump berated NATO allies over their financial commitments and would not explicitly endorse the «one for all, all for one» defense doctrine that has been the cornerstone of trans-Atlantic security for decades.
To the White House, Trump’s first trip abroad was an embodiment of the promises he made as a candidate to put America’s interests first and break through the guardrails that have long defined U. S. foreign policy. Trump advisers repeatedly described the trip as historic and groundbreaking, including one senior official who brashly said without evidence that Trump had «united the entire Muslim world.»
Addressing U. S. troops Saturday at a Sicilian air base moments before departing for Washington, Trump himself declared: «I think we hit a home run.»

AP source: Kushner back channel with Russia involved Syria
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and now top White House adviser Jared Kushner proposed a secret back channel between the Kremlin and the Trump transition team during a December meeting with a leading Russian diplomat.
Kushner spoke with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak about creating that line of communication to facilitate sensitive discussions aimed at exploring the incoming administration’s options with Russia as it was developing its Syria policy, according to a person familiar with the discussions who spoke with The Associated Press.
The intent was to connect Trump’s chief national security adviser at the time, Michael Flynn, with Russian military leaders, said this person, who wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss private policy deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Russia, a pivotal player in Syria, has backed Syrian President Bashar Assad, often at the expense of civilians during a long civil war.
The White House did not acknowledge the meeting or Kushner’s attendance until March. At the time, a White House official dismissed it as a brief courtesy meeting.

Rocker Gregg Allman dies at age 69; sang and lived the blues
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Gregg Allman, a survivor of tragedy, knew the blues musically and in a painfully personal way.
Raised by a single mother after his father was shot to death, he idolized his guitar-slinging older brother Duane and became his musical partner. They formed the nucleus of The Allman Brothers Band, which helped define the Southern rock sound of the 1970s.
Their songs such as «Whipping Post, » »Ramblin’ Man» and «Midnight Rider» laid the foundation for the genre and opened the doors for groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band.
Gregg Allman, whose bluesy vocals and soulful touch on the Hammond B-3 organ helped propel the Allman Brothers Band to superstardom, died Saturday. He was 69.
Allman died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at his home near Savannah, Georgia, his manager, Michael Lehman, told The Associated Press. He blamed cancer for Allman’s death.

UK police show photo of concert bomber, ask public for info
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — British police on Saturday released surveillance-camera images of the Manchester concert bomber on the night of the attack as they appealed for more information about his final days.
Authorities said they had made major progress in unravelling the plot behind the concert bombing but acknowledged there were still gaps in their knowledge.
Britain reduced its terrorism threat level a notch Saturday, from «critical» to «severe, » yet security remained high as jittery residents tried to enjoy a long holiday weekend. Armed police officers and soldiers were deployed at soccer matches, concerts and other big events.
Abedi, a 22-year-old Briton of Libyan descent, died in Monday’s explosion, which killed 22 others and wounded nearly 120 as crowds were leaving an Ariana Grande concert.
The photos released by police show attacker Salman Abedi on the night of the bombing, wearing sneakers, jeans, a dark jacket and a baseball cap. The straps of a knapsack are visible on his shoulders.

BA outage creates London travel chaos; power issue blamed
LONDON (AP) — British Airways canceled all flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Saturday as a global IT failure upended the travel plans of tens of thousands of people on a busy U. K. holiday weekend.
The airline said it was suffering a «major IT systems failure» around the world. Chief executive Alex Cruz said «we believe the root cause was a power-supply issue and we have no evidence of any cyberattack.»
He said the crash had affected «all of our check-in and operational systems.»
BA operates hundreds of flights from the two London airports on a typical day — and both are major hubs for worldwide travel.
Several hours after problems began cropping up Saturday morning, BA suspended flights up to 6 p.m. because the two airports had become severely congested. The airline later scrapped flights from Heathrow and Gatwick for the rest of the day.

Mayor: ‘Heroes’ died protecting women from anti-Muslim rant
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police said Saturday they’ll examine what appears to be the extremist ideology of an Oregon man accused of fatally stabbing two men who tried to intervene when the suspect yelled racial slurs at two young women who appeared to be Muslim on a Portland light-rail train.
The attack Friday happened on the first day of Ramadan, the holiest time of the year for Muslims, and it sent shockwaves through a city that prides itself on its tolerance and liberal views. A memorial where the stabbing occurred grew steadily Saturday, and a vigil was planned.
«That people feel emboldened to come out and show their racism and bigotry in that way is horrifying to me. It’s a gut check for everywhere — and absolutely for Portland, » said Christopher Douglas, who stopped at the memorial. «Portland … floats in a little bit of a bubble of its own liberal comfort and I think the reality is sinking in.»
Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, was being held in the Multnomah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a weapon. He was arrested a short time after the attack on Friday.
He will make a first court appearance Tuesday, and it wasn’t clear if he had an attorney. A phone at his home in Portland rang unanswered Saturday, and no one came to the door at his parents’ home.

Mother of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick killed in boat accident
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The mother of the CEO of the ride-hailing company Uber died in a boat accident Friday evening in Fresno County, the company said.
Bonnie Kalanick, 71, died after the boat she and her husband, Donald, 78, were riding hit a rock in Pine Flat Lake in the eastern part of the county, authorities said.
They are the parents of Travis Kalanick, 40, who founded Uber in 2009. The company has since grown to become an international operation with a market value of nearly $70 billion.
The couple from the Los Angeles neighborhood of Northridge have been longtime boaters. In a memo to Uber staff, Liane Hornsey, the chief human resources officer, called the incident an «unthinkable tragedy.» She wrote that «everyone in the Uber family knows how incredibly close Travis is to his parents.»
About 5 p.m. Friday, officers were called to the scene of the accident and found the Kalanicks on a shore of the lake, the Fresno County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Ex-Senate staffer: Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning has died
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Former U. S. Sen. Jim Bunning, a Hall of Fame pitcher who parlayed his sports fame into a political career as an uncompromising advocate for conservative causes, has died. He was 85.
Bunning’s family said the ex-senator and baseball great died late Friday of complications from a stroke suffered last October. Bunning was the patriarch of a large family that included his wife, Mary, and their nine children, 35 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
«The family is deeply grateful for the love and prayers of Jim’s friends and supporters, » his family said in a statement. «While he was a public servant with a Hall of Fame career, his legacy to us is that of a beloved husband, caring father and supportive grandfather.»
Bunning won 224 games in a workman-like 17-year major-league career, mostly with the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Phillies. The big right-hander, known for his intimidating mound presence, pitched the first perfect game in modern National League history and became the first pitcher after 1900 to throw no-hitters in both the American and National Leagues.
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Saturday that Bunning «led an extraordinary life in the national pastime and in public service.»

Underdog Cavs insist they have plenty of bite for Finals
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Vegas is betting against them and the bookies are hardly alone.
Let’s be honest, not many are giving the Cleveland Cavaliers much of a chance in the NBA Finals. They may be defending champions and they may have LeBron James, but against Golden State, they are definite underdogs.
Just don’t try to tell them that.
«The whole underdog thing is funny to me, because yeah, at the end of the day we are defending our title, » Cavs forward Kevin Love said following Saturday’s practice. «We’re trying to repeat, which is so hard to do. I think we will use it as fuel. We will use it as motivation, but the idea of playing into it? It’s tough for me to say that is the case. I don’t feel like we’re underdogs.
«We match up well with them and I think they’d say the same about us.»

Brandon McCarthy, Chase Utley deliver in Dodgers' 5-0 victory over the Cubs

0

Chase Utley drove in three runs with a pair of two-out singles, and Brandon McCarthy and Ross Stripling combined on a three-hitter that led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-0 defeat of the Chicago Cub
The Chicago Cubs seemed to wake from a season-long slumber before arriving in Los Angeles, slugging 26 homers in their previous 14 games — nine of them wins — and beginning to resemble the 103-win steamroller that ended a 108-year World Series drought last season.
Then they ran into a wood chipper of a Dodgers pitching staff that has ground their offense to a pulp.
Brandon McCarthy did not allow a runner to reach second base in six two-hit innings Saturday, striking out six and walking one, and Ross Stripling gave up one hit in three innings for his first career save in a 5-0 victory over the Cubs at Dodger Stadium .
Chris Taylor’s sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left field, highlighted a four-run fifth, and Chase Utley continued his three-week tear with two hits and three RBIs to help the Dodgers win for the eighth time in 10 games.
Saturday’s victory came on the heels of Friday night’s 4-0 win, in which Alex Wood and relievers Pedro Baez and Chris Hatcher combined on a two-hitter. And now the Cubs must face Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball, in Sunday’s series finale.
“I’ ve been on the other side of that, playing the Dodgers, getting shut out and having Kershaw looming, ” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, a former San Diego Padres coach.
“Our guys aren’ t getting too high. We know we’ re good, we’ re playing good baseball, and it is definitely nice knowing you have your ace going tomorrow.”
The Dodgers have a major league-best 3.23 ERA and a National League -high 472 strikeouts, and McCarthy, who missed most of the last two seasons because of knee and elbow surgeries, has been a huge factor, improving to 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA this season and 2-1 with a 1.11 ERA in five career games against the Cubs.
“The command of his mix was very apparent, ” Roberts said. “He got in on the lefties, there was life to the fastball in the zone, he had the breaking ball when he needed it, the cutter.”
The right-hander did not give up a hit until Ian Happ’s two-out single to right-center in the fourth. Happ was thrown out by Taylor trying to stretch it into a double. The only other Chicago hit off McCarthy was Addison Russell’s two-out single in the fifth.
McCarthy got through six innings with 79 pitches and was pulled because of some right knee discomfort that Roberts described as “a little tendinitis.”
McCarthy left the stadium to undergo an MRI test and was not available for comment, but the injury does not appear serious.
“It’s something that’s been lingering a bit, ” Roberts said. “After six innings, it was an easy decision to not push it and put him in harm’s way.”
Cubs starter John Lackey did not give up a hit until Enrique Hernandez ’s two-out double in the fourth, giving the Dodgers’ utility player 18 extra-base hits — 14 doubles, one triple and three homers — among his 24 hits this season.
“I guess my pitch selection and plate discipline have been better, ” Hernandez said. “That’s allowed me to lay off some tough pitches, get into better counts and get better pitches to hit.”
Cody Bellinger walked, and Utley, who homered in each of his previous two games, stroked a run-scoring single to left for a 1-0 lead. McCarthy led off the fifth with a walk, and Taylor lined an 83-mph breaking ball over the left-field wall for a 3-0 lead.
Yasmani Grandal singled to center, and Adrian Gonzalez dribbled an infield single to third.
Hernandez grounded into a fielder’s choice, Bellinger walked to load the bases, and Utley pulled a full-count pitch into right for a two-run single and a 5-0 lead.
Utley was batting .098 on May 9. With injuries affording the 38-year-old regular playing time, he’s hitting.354 (17 for 48) with two homers, 12 RBIs and a 1.022 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in his last 16 games, improving his average to .222.
“We know what Chase can do — we were just waiting for him to get out of whatever he was in, ” Grandal said. “He’s been really good for 40 years, so it was great to see him hit home runs on back-to-back days and square the ball up.”

В результате аварии мать Каланика погибла на месте, отец получил ранения средней степени тяжести и был доставлен в больницу.
По сообщению управления шерифа округа, лодка, в которой находилась семейная пара, разбилась о камень и утонула.

Touring Pocheon City for a taste of Korean liquor’s history

The street lights along the Myeongdong shopping district brightened the lateness of the hour when four journalists from the Philippines set foot for the first time in South Korea last May 21.
The street lights along the Myeongdong shopping district brightened the lateness of the hour when four journalists from the Philippines set foot for the first time in South Korea last May 21.
The team from Manila (including this writer) joined other female journalists from other nations, who were invited for a five-day familiarization tour themed “Lady’s Special” organized by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Manila.
It was already a little past 10 p.m. on Sunday when the team arrived at the L7 Hotels. But as we walked around the area to grab dinner, we noticed that many of the stores and restaurants were still open along Myeongdong.
After eating street food and a quick dinner at a nearby restaurant, we returned to the hotel before midnight to prepare for a full-day schedule the following day.
Our first stop was a tour at Sansawon in Pocheon City, which is an hour and half drive from Seoul.
Far from the lights and noise in Seoul, Pocheon City is a quiet and mountainous area located in Gyeonggi-do province. It is home to Sansawon, a traditional Korean liquor gallery established by the Baesangmyun Brewery.
Sansawon, which means a garden of the Sansa (May flower) tree, houses the Home Brewing Culture Gallery, the BSMB Market, and the Sansa Garden.
“Originally, the old traditional Korean liquor was made at home. That’s why we called it Home Brewing Culture place, ” our tour guide, Ginny Yang, told us on our way to Sansawon.
Yang said Pocheon City is famous for its traditional rice wine called “makgeolli.”
At the entrance of Sansawon is a big guide map board of the area. Jang Yun Seok from the marketing team of the brewery welcomed the visiting journalists and led them directly to the Sansa Garden.
Found in the garden are the “Sewollang” where 400 hundred pots, containing 600 liters of traditional distilled liquor each, are kept; Buandang, the exact replica of a warehouse owned by a rich landlord; another replica of a pavilion called Chuiseongak where people can share a cup of tea or a glass of wine while enjoying the beautiful nature around them; and the so-called “Usanggokso” where you can float wine glasses in a stream, among others.
After touring the Sansa garden, the journalists proceeded to the Home Brewing Culture Gallery where you can see the materials and the process of making the traditional Korean liquor.
The artifacts in the gallery, including miniature dolls, traced the history of the traditional Korean liquor. In one corner, there is a class room that provides an opportunity for those who want to learn and have a first-hand experience of home brewing.
At the basement of the gallery is the “BSMB” market where you can taste some of Baesangmyun Brewery’s products and brewing leftover food and buy their traditional Korean liquor.
NEXT: A tour in the former granite quarry now known as the “Pocheon Art Gallery.”
