Music is in Brian Thomas’ blood

0

NewsHubMusic is in Brian Thomas’ blood. This is the 35th year that the production manager for Brooklyn Bowl at The Linq Promenade has been in the music industry in some capacity. “This is what I’ve been born and bred to do,” said the Alberta, Canada, native.
His love affair began in grade school, where he ran audio/video components and projectors. In the early ’90s he left Canada and moved to Nashville, Tenn., eventually landing a gig with Faith Hill. But where Thomas really got his feet wet working with music production was his first tour with B. King.
“B. B. taught me things that stuck with me throughout my life,” Thomas said. “He was my first big influence.” Other musicians that left their mark on him and his career include The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Reba McEntire. “But I have to say, the one person, the most talented person I ever met … is Ryan Adams,” he said. “Undoubtedly the most talented I’ve ever worked with. He’s incredibly prolific at writing.”
Thomas brought his decades of experience in all things musical production to Brooklyn Bowl in 2014. He oversees all technical aspects inside the building—sound, light and video—as well as managing the stagehands and working with each artist and crew that comes in to play a concert.
“Finding the perfect working situation that you could lock into and love—doesn’t get to be a better situation than that.”
Stone Go To IPA
Beer is never far from reach when catching a concert inside Brooklyn Bowl. There are six full-service bars, each with a rotating selection of a dozen drafts and canned beers. The Stone Go To IPA is a fan favorite. It features ten different hops with a melon-flavor profile and a pleasant bitter finish. Other drafts include Brooklyn Lager, Magic Hat No. 9 and West Coast favorites like Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Green Flash Imperial IPA and Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

Film Review: ‘See You Tomorrow’

0

NewsHubOverkill feels like an understatement when it comes to “ See You Tomorrow ,” a star-spangled, chintz-tinseled dramedy co-written and produced by Wong Kar-wai , featuring Tony Leung Chiu-wai as a barman who moonlights as a love doctor. Though China’s Zhang Jiajia takes billing as writer-director, it’s impossible to miss Wong’s pet themes of nostalgia, unrequited love, and numerology scribbled all over the frame. And yet without the Hong Kong auteur’s usual sense of subtlety, this boozy mix of screechy characters, splashy visuals, and trite tales will likely leave audiences feeling the cinematic equivalent of a hangover.
Despite dramatically overtaking Matt Damon starrer “The Great Wall” when it first opened, the film has since leveled off at the local box office. In fact, together with Zhang Yimou’s monster blockbuster, it has provoked such a virulent backlash from bloggers and disappointed audiences in China that the state newspaper the People’s Daily published an editorial reprimanding popular online movie review sites for “undermining domestic film industry.”
The film’s flaws begin at the script level: Previously known as the screenwriter on “The Butcher, the Chef, and the Swordsman,” Zhang reportedly went through 118 drafts attempting to adapt his own short story. And while Zhang strains mightily to emulate Wong’s sense of intellectual introspection, his dialogue is full of platitudes and phony feelings. At the same time, obvious references to a number of Wong’s films, along with blatant imitations of comedies co-written by Wong and director Jeff Lau (such as “The Eagle Shooting Heroes” and “Chinese Odyssey 2002”), pale by comparison.
In the film, Chen Mo (Leung) runs a bar in Shanghai nightlife hotspot with buddy Guan Chun (Takeshi Kaneshiro). He’s a self-appointed “ferryman” (also the Chinese name of his bar) who helps people move on after a painful breakup — though he could use the service himself. A flashback to 10 years earlier shows him falling hard for Muzi (Du Juan, “Lost in Hong Kong”), a bartender whose house cocktail “See You Tomorrow” is so lethal even a hooch hound like Chen gets knocked out. In one of the film’s funnier routines, he drinks, falls down the stairs, but keeps hobbling back for more. Just as Muzi warms to him, the narrative stops short, leaving audiences frustrated.
Like many of Wong’s protagonists, everyone in Zhang’s film seems trapped in the past. Guan, formerly an arcade-game champ, once had a crush on Maomao (Sandrine Pinna, “Touch of the Light”), the daughter of a Taiwanese master pancake-chef. Now, after a decade-long absence, she has returned to revive her father’s joint, but has no memory of Guan.
DJ Xiaoyu (Angelababy) has a crush on wasted rocker Ma Li (Cantopop star Eason Chan) which dates back to her tween years, when Ma was still a budding band boy (former K-pop idol Lu Han). In a scenario that defies logic, Ma proposes to longtime girlfriend Jiang Jie (Lynn Hung), who says she’s been waiting for this moment forever, then proceeds to break up with him. To help him get back on his feet, Xiaoyu asks Chen to show her the ropes of being a “ferryman.”
Finally, one gets to see Chen in action using unconventional methods to help clients get over their failed relationships. These exploits should have been played at the start, as lighthearted lead-ins to the main protagonists’ weightier personal backstories. Now that it’s already halfway through the film, they feel more like distractions. By the time more flashbacks reveal what happened to Maomao and Muzi a decade earlier, audiences no longer feel invested in these characters.
As he did with “The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman,” Zhang employs an episodic structure, which in this case feels as if several unfinished films have been lumped together. Consistent with current mainland film trends, the director seems to have confused comedy with making a very loud racket. Each of the individual love stories parodies a genre, from culinary film to ’90s Cantopop MV to Japanese “Yankii” (a type of high school hillbilly) subculture.
Leung provides an inordinate amount of voiceover narration, while bringing a laid-back yet playful air to his performance, generating easy chemistry with such diverse personas as the aloof Du Juan and bubbly Angelababy. The other cast members bust their guts to look animated but can’t hide how little they’re invested in the drama.
Though location shooting took place in Nanjing and Qinghai, the Shanghai that appears onscreen is so brightly lit and saturated with color that it feels like an imaginary place created via visual effects. Despite its similarity to the cafe in “My Blueberry Nights,” the bar never comes alive as a character in its own right. Peter Pao and Cao Yu, usually masterful DPs, seem to overdose on stylized camera tricks, to unsightly effect, while Alfred Yau’s production design and William Chang’s costumes create an eclectic clutter. Nathaniel Mechaly’s score is a repetitive playlist of retro-Cantopop songs, mostly by Hong Kong band Beyond and Eason Chan.

A traditional end to an unconventional presidential election

0

NewsHubThe end of the 2016 presidential election is at hand.
A joint session of Congress is set to count the Electoral College votes on Friday, a traditional ending to a most unconventional presidential election.
Barring something bizarre happening, Republican Donald Trump will be declared the winner and will be sworn in at his inauguration on Jan. 20. Vice President Joe Biden will preside over the vote count in his role as president of the Senate.
All 538 electors met in their respective state capitals in December to cast their votes. Trump finished with 304 votes and Democrat Hillary Clinton with 227, according to a tally by The Associated Press. It takes 270 Electoral College votes to win the presidency.
Trump won even though Clinton received nearly 2.9 million more votes. His election has generated much angst among Democrats and others who oppose the billionaire businessman. But they have been powerless to change the outcome.
Despite rumblings of a revolt, only two Republican electors — both from Texas — cast protest votes for someone other than Trump. Clinton lost four Democratic electors in Washington state and one in Hawaii.
The secretary of state’s office in Washington said the four «faithless» electors would be fined $1,000 apiece.
Friday’s vote count marks the last chance for Democrats and other anti-Trump forces to disrupt Trump’s election. But even if they are successful, the most Democrats could do is slow the process. They don’t have the votes to overturn the outcome.
Under federal law, if at least one senator and one House member object to the vote from any state, the House and Senate would meet separately to decide the merits of the objection.
Several House Democrats have talked about filing an objection, but no senator has publicly backed the idea. Regardless, with Republicans controlling both chambers, any objection would have little chance of affecting the outcome.
Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., considered objecting but said, «This is not about trying to stop Donald Trump from becoming president. »
Perlmutter said he wants to register his objection to Russia after U. S. intelligence community findings that Moscow engaged in computer hacking to sway the election in favor of Trump. America’s top intelligence official told Congress on Thursday that Russia undoubtedly interfered in the 2016 presidential election.
«We cannot allow a foreign nation to ever influence our elections because it harms our liberty, freedom and independence,» Perlmutter said in a statement. «This is bigger than just one election, and for the sake of our democracy, we must remain vigilant. »
Trump has not fully embraced the findings of the intelligence community. In fact, he has repeatedly mocked America’s intelligence officials.
This week, Trump went on Twitter to question why an intelligence briefing he is to receive was delayed. However, intelligence officials said there had been no delay. Still, Trump wrote: «The ‘Intelligence’ briefing on so-called ‘Russian hacking’ was delayed until Friday, perhaps more time needed to build a case. Very strange! «

Japan ”temporarily” recalled its ambassador in South Korea

0

NewsHubA statue of a girl representing the Korean women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military was unveiled in front of the Japanese Consulate in Busan, South Korea, last week. Japan recalled its envoy to South Korea on Friday to protest the statue. “The Japanese government finds this situation extremely regrettable,” Yoshihide Suga, chief cabinet secretary to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said during a news conference in Tokyo.
Japan also said it would suspend negotiations over a currency swap meant to help South Korea stabilize its currency, the won, in times of financial crisis. A spokesman for the South Korea Foreign Ministry called Japan’s announcement “regrettable.” The issue of the “comfort women,” as the former sex slaves were euphemistically called in Japan and South Korea, remains seemingly intractable, despite a 2015 agreement between the countries that was meant to put the dispute behind them. Surviving former sex slaves and their advocates installed the first in a series of comfort woman statues, in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul in 2011. It is still there, with Korean activists guarding it around the clock to ensure that it is not removed. Other dozens similar statues were installed since than in different locations.

N. Korea holds mass rally to push Kim's New Year message

0

NewsHubThousands of North Koreans have rallied in Pyongyang, chanting communist slogans and vowing support for leader Kim Jong-Un, who in his New Year’s message announced plans to test-fire a ballistic missile capable of reaching the US mainland.
Clad in thick winter coats and pumping their fists in the air, those assembled in Kim Il-Sung square chanted «long live comrade Kim Jong-Un» and held banners proclaiming «let us accelerate the victorious advance of socialism! »
Kim marked the New Year with a 30-minute televised speech that largely focused on the country’s rise as a nuclear power, announcing that it was in the «final stages» of developing an intercontinental ballistic missile of the kind that could threaten US soil.
«The people should regard Kim Jong-Un’s New Year address as a motto of life and struggle,» state media KCNA quoted a party official at the rally as saying.
Kim’s New Year address drew swift response from US president-elect Donald Trump, who took to Twitter vowing to halt Pyongyang in its tracks.
In 2016, North Korea conducted two nuclear tests and numerous missile launches in its quest to develop a nuclear weapons system capable of hitting the US mainland, prompting Washington to reinforce its antimissile defenses in the region.
But analysts are divided over how close Pyongyang is to realising its full nuclear ambitions, especially since it has never successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Kim also admitted to his «shortcomings» as a leader in his New Year’s speech and pledged «devoted efforts» to make North Korea prosperous again.
Thae Yong-Ho, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to Britain who defected to the South in August, has referred to growing public discontent about the leadership, saying ordinary North Koreans have had to learn ways to survive on their own rather than relying on the party.
