Uber suspends unlicensed service in Norway in change of tack

0

The unlicensed UberPOP service has been suspended in several European capitals, including Paris and Brussels.
Uber said on Monday it would suspend its unlicensed service UberPOP in Oslo until Norway introduces new rules, as the U. S. ride-hailing app adopts a more conciliatory tone with national authorities.
The move follows a similar one-year suspension in Finland in July to allow a new taxi law to come into effect, however there is no set date for when UberPOP will be reintroduced in Norway.
The U. S. ride-hailing company has come under fierce pressure from traditional taxi drivers and regulators across Europe who accuse it of unfair competition and skirting traditional licensing rules.
UberPOP has already been suspended in several European capitals, including Paris and Brussels, and Uber was recently humbled when it lost its license to operate in London .
«We’ve learned the hard way that we must change as a company in order to serve the millions of riders and drivers who rely on us. With our new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi onboard, it’s a new era for Uber,» the company said in a statement.
«That’s why it’s now time to pause UberPOP in Norway, in order to relaunch under new regulations.»
UberPOP will be paused on Oct. 30, while Uber’s licensed services UberBLACK and UberXXL will continue to operate as normal.
Khosrowshahi took the helm of the company in August, replacing co-founder and former boss Travis Kalanick and has promised change at the $70-billion dollar firm.
The company said it was encouraged by developments in Norway such as the government’s sharing economy committee which recommended repealing certain provisions related to taxis and an opinion from the EFTA surveillance authority which said Norway’s restrictions on taxi licenses were illegal.
«Norway deserves modernized laws that encourage innovation and competition without sacrificing what makes the Norwegian model special,» Uber said. «We hope the government will implement these recommendations soon, so that we can relaunch a new and improved version of the product loved by so many.»
UberPOP had around 280,000 users in Oslo and hundreds of drivers.

China denies links to alleged cyber attacks in United States targeting exiled tycoon Guo

0

China has denied responsibility for alleged cyber attacks in the United States appearing to target exiled tycoon Guo Wengui, who has levelled corruption allegations against senior Communist Party officials and applied for political asylum.
BEIJING (Reuters) — China has denied responsibility for alleged cyber attacks in the United States appearing to target exiled tycoon Guo Wengui, who has levelled corruption allegations against senior Communist Party officials and applied for political asylum.
The Ministry of Public Security said in a statement provided to Reuters on Sunday an investigation had found “no evidence” of Chinese government involvement in the alleged cyber attacks.
The law enforcement agency said China had also provided the U. S. government with evidence that Guo, who has applied for political asylum in the United States, fabricated documents used to support his claims. It said China would make an official request for U. S. authorities to investigate the matter.
“The falsified official documents and the false information he fabricated are sensational and outrageous,” the ministry said in a rare English-language statement.
Guo denied the documents were forged and said the Ministry of Public Security’s statement should not be believed.
The Washington-based Hudson Institute think tank was scheduled to host Guo last Wednesday in a rare public appearance, but canceled the event the day before without explanation.
The event would have coincided with the visit of an official Chinese delegation to the U. S. capital for a high-level law enforcement and cyber security dialogue between the two countries.
The Hudson Institute said it had detected a Shanghai-based attack aimed at shutting down access to its website several days earlier. POLITICAL ASYLUM
The suspected attack was raised by U. S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions during a meeting with China’s Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun on Wednesday, a Department of Justice spokesman told Reuters on Sunday.
China had “pledged to cooperate”, the spokesman said.
However, the New York-based Guo Wengui said: “Just because the Ministry of Public Security said China didn’t do it doesn’t make it true.”
“Why did the U. S. raise it in their meeting?” he told Reuters.
Guo Wengui applied for U. S. political asylum in September, but said this week the law firm representing him, Clark Hill PLC, had backed out after being targeted by Chinese hackers.
Clark Hill lawyer Thomas Ragland, who lodged the asylum claim, confirmed he was no longer representing Guo Wengui, without elaborating.
Guo Wengui held a news conference at the National Press Club on Thursday, after his Hudson event was called off, where he produced what he claimed were “top secret” official documents showing China had sent secret agents into the United States.
China’s Ministry of Public Security said the documents shown by him were “clumsily forged” and “full of obvious mistakes”.
Guo Wengui has made wide-ranging corruption allegations against senior Communist Party leaders through a daily stream of Twitter and YouTube posts since the start of the year, which he says are aimed at disrupting a key five-yearly Communist Party congress that begins next week.
The Chinese government has been seeking to discredit Guo Wengui, who is the subject of an Interpol red notice issued at Beijing’s request, as a criminal suspect who should not be trusted.

Proteste gegen Unabhängigkeit Kataloniens in Barcelona

0

Film producer Harvey Weinstein ousted from Weinstein Co.

0

He had previously taken a leave of absence after the revelation of at least eight allegations of sexual harassment.
NEW YORK — Harvey Weinstein, the sharp-elbowed movie producer whose combative reign in Hollywood made him an Academy Awards regular, was fired from The Weinstein Co. on Sunday following an expose that detailed decades of sexual abuse allegations made against Weinstein by actresses and employees.
In a statement, the company’s board of directors announced his firing Sunday night, capping the swift downfall of one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers and expelling him from the company he co-created.
“In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company – Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar – have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately,” the company’s board said in a statement on Sunday night.
Weinstein had previously taken an indefinite leave of absence following the revelation of at least eight allegations of sexual harassment uncovered in an expose Thursday by The New York Times. The board on Friday endorsed that decision and announced an investigation into the allegations, saying it would determine the co-chairman’s future with the company.
But the Weinstein Co. board, which includes Weinstein’s brother, went further on Sunday, firing the executive who has always been its primary operator, public face and studio chief. Under his leadership, the Weinstein Co. has been a dominant force at the Oscars, including the rare feat of winning back-to-back best picture Academy Awards with “The King’s Speech” and “The Artist.” In recent years, however, Weinstein’s status has diminished because of money shortages, disappointing box-office returns and executive departures.
An attorney for Weinstein didn’t immediately return messages Sunday.
A spokesperson for The Weinstein Co. declined to provide further details on Weinstein’s firing. Messages left for attorney John Keirnan of the firm Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, who had been appointed to lead an investigation, weren’t immediately returned Sunday.
Weinstein on Thursday issued a lengthy statement that acknowledged causing “a lot of pain.” He also asked for “a second chance.” But Weinstein and his lawyers also criticized The New York Times’ report in statements and interviews, and vowed an aggressive response. The New York Times said it was “confident in the accuracy of our reporting.”
The New York Times article chronicled sexual harassment settlements Weinstein made with film star Ashley Judd and former employees at both The Weinstein Co. and Weinstein’s former company, Miramax. Weinstein made his name with Miramax, the company he founded with his brother Bob in 1979. They sold it to Disney in 1993 for $60 million. The company was a fixture of the 1990s independent film movement, launching the careers of filmmakers Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith and Steven Soderbergh, and winning best picture with “Shakespeare in Love” and “The English Patient.”
The allegations triggered cascading chaos at the Weinstein Co. Numerous members of its all-male board have stepped down since Thursday. The prominent attorney Lisa Bloom, daughter of well-known Los Angeles women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, on Saturday withdrew from representing Weinstein, as did another adviser, Lanny Davis.
Pressure to act continued to mount on the board as more developments followed. Congressional Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, donated to charities thousands of dollars in donations they had received from Weinstein.
TV anchor Lauren Sivan on Friday detailed an alleged 2007 encounter with Weinstein in a HuffPost report. Sivan, then working at a New York cable channel, Long Island 12, alleged that Weinstein cornered her in the hallway of a Manhattan restaurant closed to the public and masturbated in front of her.
Sivan said she had rejected an attempt by Weinstein to kiss her. “Well, can you just stand there and shut up,” she claims he responded.
Bob Weinstein and David Glasser, chief operating officer, are now running The Weinstein Co. But it remains to be seen not only if the company can continue without its prominent producer but also whether it can weather questions of culpability in its former co-chairman’s behavior. In reaction to Thursday’s report, many in Hollywood called Weinstein’s behavior “an open secret.” The settlement funds paid out also may have come from The Weinstein Co.
The company has attempted to continue with business as usual, including a promotional event Sunday night for its 2017 awards hopeful, the indie hit thriller “Wind River.” While it has a handful of films scheduled for release in the coming months, much of the company’s business has recently angled toward television, producing shows like “Project Runway”
Many in the movie industry vented their disgust with the allegations against Weinstein in recent days, including Lena Dunham and Brie Larson. For them, the allegations against Weinstein not only compare to those against Bill Cosby and Roger Ailes, but reflect Hollywood’s deep-rooted gender inequality. Imbalances in pay between actors and actresses and the continued paucity of women directors behind the camera for the biggest productions have been ongoing issues in Hollywood.
Still most of the A-listers that Weinstein led to Academy Awards nominations have been largely silent since Thursday’s report. On Sunday night, others celebrated Weinstein’s exit.
“If even 1/10th of the stories about Harvey Weinstein are true (and I believe they are), then good riddance,” said “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn, who added an expletive. “The enabling needs to end.”

The body of a Bay Area woman who died in the Las Vegas mass shooting was returned home Sunday.
The body of a Bay Area woman who died in the Las Vegas mass shooting was returned home Sunday. Stacee Etcheber was at the concert with her husband, San Francisco police officer Vinnie Etcheber. She was a mother of two and lived in Novato. Her body arrived at SFO Sunday afternoon, one week to the day of the shooting. When the plane arrived at SFO, the southwest flight attendant announced that on board was the body of one of the victims from last Sunday. Many say they were overcome with emotion when the saw family members and police officers outside their window. Many of Vinnie’s fellow officers were at SFO when her body arrived just after 2pm. Members of the color guard were on hand, and so were many other officers, several of whom carried the casket. A procession then followed. Passengers who caught a glimpse of what was going on outside their plane were moved by the tribute Etcheber received.»People who are the innocent victims of these tragedies it’s sad to see them. At the same time, they’re getting the proper kind of coming home,» passenger Michele Bergen said.»When you see all the police officers and everybody just standing and the respect they have. It was just very hard. You just see all the families. Very upsetting,» passenger Tracey Reilly said. Etcheber was married to her husband Vinnie for 13 years. She was also the mother of two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son.

NFL roundup: Rodgers leads Packers to comeback win

Aaron Rodgers directs a last-minute drive as Green Bay tops Dallas, 35-31.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Aaron Rodgers threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams with 11 seconds remaining, lifting Green Bay over the Dallas Cowboys 35-31 Sunday in another thriller nine months after the Packers’ divisional playoff win on the same field.
Rodgers capped a 75-yard drive in just 1:02.
Adams, active 10 days after leaving the field on a stretcher following a helmet-to-helmet hit that resulted in a suspension for Chicago linebacker Danny Trevathan, had seven catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Dak Prescott had given the Cowboys the lead with an 11-yard run with 1:13 remaining, capping a 17-play drive that lasted almost nine minutes. Dallas (2-3) has already matched its loss total from last season.
Green Bay (4-1) rallied from 15 points down in the first half. There were five lead changes in the fourth quarter, including the Packers going ahead 28-24 on Damarius Randall’s 21-yard interception return for a TD.
Jacksonville beat the Steelers for the first time in a decade by relying heavily on the NFL’s top-ranked pass defense. Rookie Leonard Fournette ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars, who are over.500 after five games for the first time since 2010 and have already matched their victory total from 2016.
Wentz tossed three scoring passes in the first quarter – 59 yards to Torrey Smith, 11 yards to Zach Ertz and 15 yards to Trey Burton. He connected with Nelson Agholor for a 72-yard TD in the third quarter that left six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson shouting on the sideline.
The Cardinals (2-3) were held to 279 yards.
The jeers started in the first quarter of the Dolphins’ home debut, and soon the crowd was chanting for backup quarterback Matt Moore. But Coach Adam Gase stuck with Cutler, who capped a 58-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis Landry for the tiebreaking score.
Newton was 26 of 33 for a season-high 335 yards.
Vinatieri made four field goals to move into second on the NFL’s career list, one ahead of Gary Anderson (538).

Seahawks preserve NFC West supremacy in 16-10 win over Rams

0

Russell Wilson passed for 198 yards and a touchdown, and Earl Thomas forced two of the Rams’ five turnovers in the Seattle Seahawks’ 16-10 victory over Los Angeles.
The Seattle Seahawks watched enough film to know Jared Goff and Todd Gurley have made remarkable strides under new Rams coach Sean McVay.
Earl Thomas, Sheldon Richardson and the veteran Seahawks defense wouldn’t let the upstart Rams step atop the NFC West just yet.
Thomas forced two of the Rams’ five turnovers, and Richardson picked up two more during the Seahawks’ 16-10 victory over Los Angeles on Sunday.
Russell Wilson passed for 198 yards and hit Jimmy Graham for a touchdown late in the first half for the Seahawks (3-2), who shut out the NFL’s highest-scoring offense in the second half and won despite getting outgained 375-241.
The Rams (3-2) caught the league’s attention with the highest-scoring offense in the season’s opening quarter, but the Seahawks aren’t ready to abdicate the division throne.
«I don’t know if it’s a ‘Not so fast’ moment,» Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said. «I think people look forward to writing us off, and I think our demise was greatly overstated. … McVay has them playing lights-out, so you’ve got to give them all the credit in the world, but we don’t think about other teams when we’re going about our business.»
Thomas made enormous plays early and late. The veteran safety chopped the ball out of Gurley’s outstretched hand at the pylon to kill the Rams’ opening drive with a fumble and touchback, and he intercepted Goff’s fluttering pass at midfield with 6:02 to play.
Richardson also came through impressively, diving to snag a deflected pass for his first career interception in the third quarter before scooping up Goff’s fumble near midfield with 2:45 left.
«He’s going to be all right,» Richardson said of Goff, who went 22 of 47 for 288 yards with three costly turnovers. «He’s not the same guy from last year. But he’s no Tom Brady yet.»
The Legion of Boom did blanketing work on Sammy Watkins and the Rams’ receivers, but Seattle couldn’t rest easily until Goff’s last-minute drive ended with three straight incompletions near the end zone.
It came down to a few fingertips: Rams rookie Cooper Kupp barely missed a diving TD grab on third down with 8 seconds to play.
«I expect to make that play,» said Kupp, who had three catches for 44 yards. «I can’t say anything about whether it was behind me or a one-hand catch. If I’m putting my hands on the ball, I’ve got to make that play.»
Tavon Austin rushed for a 27-yard TD for Los Angeles, which had a strong defensive game of its own. Wilson didn’t have big numbers, but the quarterback put on a performance of vintage resourcefulness, repeatedly wriggling away from the Rams’ pursuing defense to make plays.
Blair Walsh’s two second-half field goals turned out to be the difference for Seattle, which managed just 97 yards in the second half.
A few more takeaways from Pete Carroll’s first win at the Coliseum since USC beat UCLA on Nov. 28,2009:
RED ZONE WOES: While the Rams’ offense has been undeniably transformed by McVay, it still can’t score touchdowns consistently. One week after kicking seven field goals in Dallas, Los Angeles got just three points out of four trips to the red zone.
Gurley was averaging nearly 27 touches per game this season, but the running back got just 14 carries and two receptions against the Seahawks. Los Angeles also targeted Watkins only four times, and the speedy receiver went without a catch for just the second time in his 42 NFL games.
BIG TACKLE: Wilson made several impressive plays, but few were bigger than his hustle after a bad throw. Rams rookie John Johnson intercepted his pass in the second quarter and returned it 69 yards, but Wilson made a possible touchdown-saving tackle. Los Angeles had to settle for a field goal.
«Took me back to my high school days, when I used to have to play corner,» Wilson said.
BIG MISS: The Rams’ Greg Zuerlein was perfect on field goals this season until missing a 36-yarder in the second half. He had made 19 straight field goals dating to last December, matching the second-longest streak in team history.

Jerry Jones: Cowboys 'will not play' if they disrespect flag

0

Dallas owner Jerry Jones says the NFL can’t leave the impression that it tolerates players disrespecting the flag and that any of his Cowboys making such displays won’t play.
Dallas owner Jerry Jones said the NFL can’t leave the impression that it tolerates players disrespecting the flag and that any of his Cowboys making such displays won’t play.
Jones had his strongest comments so far on the anthem controversy Sunday night. They started with his response to a question about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis after about a dozen San Francisco players knelt during the anthem.
«I know this, we cannot … in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag,» Jones, also the team’s general manager, said after a 35-31 loss to Green Bay.
«We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we’re clear.»
The Cowboys knelt arm-in-arm before the national anthem when they played at Arizona two weeks ago, days after President Donald Trump criticized NFL players for anthem protests.
Dallas players, coaches and others, including Jones and his family, were among those in the line in Arizona. All of them stood during the anthem, with arms still locked.
Other than that, Dallas players have stood on the sideline, many with hands over their hearts, during the anthem ever since former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling last season in protest of what he believed were instances of police brutality in the U. S.
Jones said he wasn’t aware of whether any of his players had raised a fist at the end of the anthem before the Green Bay game.
«I don’t know about that,» said Jones, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. «But if there’s anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play. OK? Understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period.»
Jones said showing respect for the flag and the anthem is more important to him than any potential issues of team unity.
«There is no room here if it comes between looking non-supportive of our players and of each other or creating the impression that you’re disrespecting the flag, we will be non-supportive of each other,» Jones said. «We will not disrespect the flag.»
Jones said a phone conversation with Trump after the display in Arizona included Trump telling him there was a rule on the books.
The NFL has said the game operations manual distributed to teams includes a reference to players standing for the anthem, but that it’s a policy and not a rule. The league has said it doesn’t plan to punish players over anthem protests.
«The league in mind should absolutely take the rules we’ve got on the books and make sure that we do not give the perception that we’re disrespecting the flag,» Jones said.
