In Weinstein saga, Rose McGowan emerges as powerful voice

In a flurry of unrestrained tweets and with the «RoseArmy» at her back, Rose McGowan has emerged a kind of whistleblowing avenger in the Harvey Weinstein saga, leaving a scorched path behind…
NEW YORK (AP) — In a flurry of unrestrained tweets and with the «RoseArmy» at her back, Rose McGowan has emerged a kind of whistleblowing avenger in the Harvey Weinstein saga, leaving a scorched path behind her across social media.
After long referencing a past incident with Weinstein, McGowan on Thursday for the first time said it outright: «HW raped me,» the actress wrote, apparently referring to the embattled former Weinstein Co. co-chairman. Weinstein representative Sallie Hofmeister said «any allegations of non-consensual contact are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.»
The Hollywood Reporter said McGowan confirmed it was Weinstein she was referring to; her representative did not respond to a message seeking comment.
McGowan’s accusation was the latest development in the fast-unraveling saga surrounding Weinstein.
Police detectives in New York and London said Thursday that they are taking a fresh look into sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein now that some 30 women have accused the Hollywood film producer of inappropriate conduct. Hachette Book Group, one of the country’s top publishers, announced it has pulled the plug on its Weinstein Books imprint.
But it has been McGowan who spoke loudest Thursday, even though she spent half the day suspended by Twitter.
McGowan last year said that she had been raped by a «studio head.» The New Yorker expose that ran Tuesday reported that Weinstein had allegedly sexually assaulted three women, though the third woman was unnamed. The New York Times earlier reported that Weinstein paid a financial settlement of $100,000 to McGowan in 1997 after an episode at a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
That settlement included provisions about speaking about the case in the future, but McGowan has increasingly refused to mince words. «It’s on,» tweeted McGowan before launching into a series of tweets directed at Amazon head Jeff Bezos.
«I told the head of your studio that HW raped me,» said McGowan in tweets directed to Bezos. «Over and Over I said it. He said it hadn’t been proven. I said I was the proof.»
Amazon did not return a message seeking comment.
Authorities are also seeking evidence against Weinstein, who in a video posted by celebrity website TMZ was shown Wednesday outside a Los Angeles home telling the paparazzi he’s «not doing OK» and that he «needs help.»
New York Police Department spokesman Peter Donald said Thursday that investigators are reviewing police files to see if anyone else reported being assaulted or harassed by him.
So far, no filed complaints have been found, he said, other than one well-known case that prompted an investigation in 2015, but authorities are encouraging anyone with information on Weinstein to contact the department.
London police were also looking into a claim it had received from the Merseyside force in northwest England, British media reported Thursday. Merseyside police said the allegation was made a day earlier and concerned «an alleged sexual assault in the London area in the 1980s.»
Some 30 women — including actresses Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow — have spoken out recently to say Weinstein had sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them. Weinstein was fired Sunday by The Weinstein Co., a studio he co-founded with his brother.
Some of the allegations involved conduct at hotels in Beverly Hills, but police there didn’t return calls on whether they were investigating any possible crimes. The Los Angeles Police Department has no open investigations.
Detectives in the NYPD’s special victims unit were instructed to identify and speak with any potential victims, including the women who spoke about their encounters with Weinstein in the New Yorker article, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office, which shares a records system with Park City Police, had no reports or calls involving Weinstein or McGowan in the past 30 years, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Andrew Wright said.
In The New Yorker expose, a former actress, Lucia Evans, said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex in 2004 when she was a college student. A second woman, actress and filmmaker Asia Argento, told the magazine that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her in 1997 at a hotel in France.
Under New York law, making someone engage in oral sex by physical force or the threat of it is a first-degree criminal sexual act. There’s no legal time limit for bringing charges.
New York detectives already investigated Weinstein once, the 2015 probe when an Italian model said the studio executive grabbed her breasts and groped her. Detectives set up a sting where they recorded a conversation between the woman and Weinstein while he tried to persuade her to come into his hotel room.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said prosecutors decided there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute the case.
«I, like they, were very disturbed by the contents of the tape,» Vance said. «But at the end of the day we operate in a courtroom of law, not the court of public opinion. And our sex crime prosecutors made a determination that this was not going to be a provable case.»
Police investigated that allegation as a case of forcible touching, a misdemeanor with a two-year time limit for bringing charges. The statute of limitations has since expired.
Thursday evening, Amazon Studios announced its chief, Roy Price, had been placed on leave after a producer detailed crude remarks she said he made to her after a 2015 Comic-Con event in San Diego. Isa Hackett, the daughter of author Philip K. Dick and a producer on the Amazon series «Man in the High Castle,» told The Hollywood Reporter that Price persisted with sexual remarks toward her throughout the evening.
She said she complained to Amazon executives, who launched an investigation but never informed her of the results. She told the Reporter she never saw Price again at an Amazon event promoting the show or another series based on her father’s work.
Hours earlier, the Eastern branch of the Writers Guild of America pledged to take action to prevent future abuse, noting that «sexual harassment and assault have long been hallmarks of the entertainment industry.»

500 million PCs are being used for stealth cryptocurrency mining online

0

Your PC may be used to find cryptocurrency when you visit websites, with or without your consent.
A new report suggests hundreds of websites have taken The Pirate Bay’s lead and are now using visitor PCs to mine cryptocurrency without the consent of users.
A month or so ago, torrent search website The Pirate Bay raised concern among the community as visitors noticed their CPU usage surged whenever a page was opened.
At first, some worried that malvertising or embedded malware was at play; however, when the domain’s operators realized the game was up, they admitted the power surge was due to a «small experiment» in cryptocurrency mining.
Cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin or Monero can be «mined» and acquired through computational power. If enough PC owners donate power, then mining can be a way to rake in revenue.
In The Pirate Bay’s case, the website’s operators were experimenting with a mining script from CoinHive which hunted for Monero. The trial was explained as a potential way for the website to run for free, without needing to rely on adverts.
It seems this idea has now taken root in other websites, too.
According to a new report from Adguard, in a matter of weeks, 2.2 percent of the top 100,000 websites on the Alexa list are now mining through user PCs.
In total, 220 sites that launch mining when a user opens their main page, with an aggregated audience of 500 million people.
CoinHive and JSEcoin are currently the most popular scripts being employed to hunt down cryptocurrency, and Adguard estimates that these domains have earned roughly $43,000 in a three-week period at little or no cost.
It has been estimated that The Pirate Bay may be able to make roughly $12,000 per month from mining cryptocurrency, due to the domain’s heavy flow of traffic.
The majority of websites currently using miners, however, come from a blurry area. Torrent search websites, domains hosting pirated content, and pornographic websites are the most likely to use cryptocurrency miners.
«There may be a further explanation for the fact that browser mining is found mostly on websites with a shady reputation,» the firm says. «These sites traditionally have trouble making money through advertising, so they are open to experiments and innovation.»
Websites with video-based content that keep users in place for some time are most likely to generate income from this method.
In itself, mining scripts have no ethical stance. It is a technology used to find cryptocurrency, nothing more and nothing less. However, the method in which it is employed is the issue.
By hijacking a visitor’s CPU, power is used. While many users may be happy to lend their power rather than be inundated with adverts, consent is key.
CoinHive has responded to the recent media attention and has asked users to make their website visitors aware of mining scripts.
«We’re a bit saddened to see that some of our customers integrate CoinHive into their pages without disclosing to their users what’s going on, let alone asking for their permission,» the company says. «We believe there’s so much more potential for our solution, but we have to be respectful to our end users.»
Cryptocurrency mining has potential, and if handled properly, there is little reason why website visitors would not agree to such schemes in comparison to ad-laden pages.
However, if domain operators do not respect their end users and do not seek permission, they are risking a hit to their reputation which they may not recover from.
Until this issue is resolved, take note — adblockers will generally block these scripts. It is up to domain operators and cryptocurrency mining script developers to work together to make this a viable alternative, and in the meantime, you can ensure your CPU is safe.
«Providing a real alternative to ads and users who block them turned out to be a much harder problem,» the company added. «CoinHive, too, is now blocked by many ad-block browser extensions, which — we have to admit — is reasonable at this point.»
Some hosting providers are taking on the issue, too. Earlier this month, it emerged that CloudFlare has taken steps to suspect accounts which stealth mine without permission.

The Latest: Democrats slam new Trump health policy

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s executive order on health care (all times local):
11:15 p.m.
Congressional Democratic leaders say it will be an act of «vast, pointless sabotage» if President Donald Trump halts payments to insurers under «Obamacare.»
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi reacted Thursday night to news reports that Trump planned to stop the cost-sharing payments.
The Democrats say Trump «has apparently decided to punish the American people for his inability to improve our health care system.» They add that «millions of hard-working American families will suffer just because President Trump wants them to.»
The White House said in a statement Thursday night that the Department of Health and Human Services has determined there is no appropriation for cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers under the Obamacare law.
__
10:50 p.m.
President Donald Trump plans to halt payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law that he has been trying to unravel for months.
That’s according to two people familiar with the decision who sought anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The White House says in a statement that the Department of Health and Human Services has determined there is no appropriation for cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers under the Obamacare law.
Trump’s decision is expected to rattle already-unsteady insurance marketplaces. The president has previously threatened to end the payments, which help reduce health insurance copays and deductibles for people with modest incomes, but remain under a legal cloud.
The president’s action is likely to trigger a lawsuit from state attorneys general, who contend the subsidies to insurers are fully authorized by federal law, and the president’s position is reckless.
— Ken Thomas and Catherine Lucey
___
12 p.m.
President Donald Trump predicts «millions and millions of people» will benefit from his action to unwind the health care law.
He’s signed an executive order to make lower-premium plans more widely available.
But the changes Trump hopes to bring about could take months or even longer. That’s according to administration officials who outlined the order for reporters Thursday morning. The proposals may not be finalized in time to affect coverage for 2019, let alone next year.
White House domestic policy director Andrew Bremberg said that Trump still believes Congress needs to repeal and replace the Obama-era Affordable Care Act. The White House described the order as first steps.
Trump signed the order in the White House’s Roosevelt Room surrounded by Vice President Mike Pence, members of his Cabinet and Congress.
___
11:55 a.m.
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that aims to make lower-premium health care plans available to more Americans.
The president says the order will provide what he calls «Obamacare relief» for millions of Americans.
Trump is relying on the executive order because the Republican-controlled Congress has been unable to pass a plan to repeal and replace the Obama-era health care law.
Trump says the health care system «will get better» with his action, and the action will cost the federal government nothing.
The president says he still wants Congress repeal and replace the Obama health care law. But his says his order will give people more competition, more choices and lower premiums.
___
3:38 a.m.
President Donald Trump has made no secret he’s frustrated with the failure of Congress to repeal and replace «Obamacare.»
Now Trump will try to put his own stamp on health care with an executive order that aims to make lower-premium insurance plans available to more consumers. He will unveil his plan Thursday.
Administration officials say it will let groups and associations sponsor coverage that can be marketed across the land, reflecting Trump’s longstanding belief that interstate competition will lead to lower premiums.
Trump’s move is likely to encounter opposition from medical associations, consumer groups and even insurers — the same coalition that has blocked congressional Republicans. They say it would raise costs for the sick, while the lower-premium coverage for healthy people would come with significant gaps.

President Trump expected to 'decertify' Obama-era Iran deal

0

The decision would be a significant declaration.
President Donald Trump is expected to announce Friday that the Iran nuclear deal no longer serves U. S. national security interests.
This decision, which has been referred as “decertification,” would be a significant declaration but would put Congress in charge of whether or not to follow up with action, triggering a 60-day window for lawmakers to re-impose sanctions against Iran that were suspended in 2015 as part of the agreement.
Trump could also ask Congress to impose additional non-nuclear sanctions — such as penalties against Iran’s ballistic missile program — on Iran, which would not end U. S. participation in the nuclear agreement. He could also ask lawmakers to amend the existing law requiring he re-certify Iran’s compliance with the agreement every 90 days.
Tehran and world powers in July 2015 crafted a deal that eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for stepped-up international monitoring of its nuclear development activities. The agreement reduced the amount of nuclear fuel Iran can keep and extended the «breakout time» needed for Iran to create a single bomb. Some of Iran’s facilities are now also subject to constant monitoring, with others subject to inspections after a waiting period.
Top officials on the Trump national security team, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, have said Iran has technically complied with the nuclear deal.
Republicans critical of the initial deal have urged the administration to enforce it.
“As flawed as the deal is, I believe we must now enforce the hell out of it,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif., said in a hearing Wednesday. “Let’s work with allies to make certain that international inspectors have better access to possible nuclear sites, and we should address the fundamental sunset shortcoming, as our allies have recognized.”
Even Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., one of the most vocal critics of the Iran deal and supporters of decertification, has recommended holding off on “snapping back,” or restoring immediately, the nuclear sanctions lifted as part of the deal. He called the move a “backward-looking step” and said Congress should instead impose new ballistic sanctions and lift some of the Iran agreement’s sunset provisions which allow some regulatory measures to expire after certain periods.
The goal with such actions, according to Cotton, would be to bring Iran back to the negotiating table to strengthen the original deal.
But some Obama-era officials who worked on the agreement said that hope was unrealistic.
“I would love to see Iran come back to the table, apologizes for everything and agree to all of our demands,” Philip Gordon, White House coordinator for the Middle East during the Iran negotiations, told ABC News. But he called such a notion a “fantasy.”
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who led the charge against the bill and wrote a law forcing congressional oversight of the Iran agreement, has also expressed skepticism that decertifying the deal is the right decision.
“You can only tear these things up one time. It might feel good for a second, but one of the things that’s important for us is to keep our allies with us,” he said, referring to the other signatories of the Iran deal which include China and Russia as well as the European Union.
The White House has been in touch with Capitol Hill for the past two weeks over its Iran decision. White House national security adviser H. R. McMaster was on Capitol Hill Wednesday evening briefing top Republican lawmakers on the administration’s forthcoming announcement.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has also been briefing key lawmakers on the administration’s plans for the agreement, and met with Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., Wednesday at the State Department .
Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., who was among a group of Senate Democrats who met with McMaster last week, said the White House was open to negotiating the Corker-authored bill that requires the president to certify the deal every 90 days in the first place.
Coons told reporters in a conference call earlier this week that he believes Trump should just continue to affirm that Iran is complying with the deal but said he’d be open to amending the requirement “if that’s what’s required to get the president to continue to embrace” the Iran deal.
ABC News’ Benjamin Siegel contributed to this report.

Samsung CEO announces his resignation, following 'crisis inside out'

0

Samsung CEO, Kwon Oh-hyun has unexpectedly announced that he plans to step down from the company’s management. Apparently, an ‘unprecedented crisis’ has been a deciding factor in this decision.
Today, Samsung Electronics CEO and Vice Chairman, Kwon Oh-hyun, has announced his resignation. He will be stepping down from his position as the company’s CEO, along with his positions on the board and as CEO of Samsung Display in March 2018. This decision is quite surprising, considering the tech giant expects profits to exceed expectations this quarter.
In a letter to his employees, Kwon detailed the reasons that had led him towards making this important decision:
Undoubtedly, the imprisonment of Samsung’s former Vice Chairman less than two months ago is part of this »crisis inside out». It will be interesting to see whether the scandal has even more of an impact on the company’s day-to-day operations.
Considering that Samsung Electronics’ share price has risen dramatically — and that it is currently the most profitable tech company in the world — makes this decision all the more harder to comprehend. Interestingly, however, Kwon mentioned that the company’s current success is due to «past decisions and investments», also noting the company’s inability to predict future trends at the moment.
Kwan first joined the company in 1985, and has since risen up the ranks, becoming Samsung Electronics’ CEO in 2012. Samsung has not yet announced a successor to the highly sought positions his resignation has left up for grabs.

Java Command-Line Interfaces (Part 20): JSAP

0

See how the open source JSAP differs from other CLI libraries. Heavily used in Groovy, it brings flexibility that makes it good for simple or complex use cases.
JSAP ( Java Simple Argument Parser) 2.1 is the focus of this twentieth post in this series on processing command line arguments from Java. The JSAP page describes the library’s reason for existence: «I found several parsers on the Internet, all of which handled switches, but none of which had the versatility I wanted in terms of return types and configuration files.»
JSAP offers quite a bit of flexibility at the normal cost of some complexity. Fortunately, JSAP provides a class called SimpleJSAP that makes it easier to accomplish simple tasks with JSAP. The JSAP documentation articulates it this way, «If you want to minimize the amount of code handling the command line, JSAP offers a SimpleJSAP that does most of the work for you.» The next code listing demonstrates using SimpleJSAP in a single (albeit verbose) statement to define the expected command line options.
For the above code listing, I used static imports to reduce the verbosity of this «definition» code. These can be seen in the full code listing available on GitHub. The code above defines the two options being used in all of the posts in their series on libraries used to parse command line arguments in Java: file path/name and verbosity. The single characters ‘f’ and ‘v’ are the short option names and the long option names follow them in their respective calls ( file and verbose). Note that the «definition» of command line arguments can be configured via XML as well, though that is not demonstrated here.
The «parsing» stage is accomplished in JSAP with another single statement in which an invocation of the parse(String[]) method on the instance of SimpleJSAP returns an instance of JSAPResult .
JSAP’s «interrogation» stage is accomplished with calls on the instance of JSAPResult returned by the parse method as demonstrated in the next code listing.
JSAP will generate automatic usage and help statements. The next code listing demonstrates use of the SimpleJSAP.messagePrinted() method to determine if some time of parsing error occurred and then using the SimpleJSAP.getHelp() message to access the automatically generated «help» message.
The next two screen snapshots demonstrate execution of the code examples shown in this post using JSAP. The first image depicts the usage statement printed when the required -f / —file flag is not provided. The second image depicts normal behavior of the example code based on JSAP.
There are characteristics of JSAP to consider when selecting a framework or library to help with command-line parsing in Java.
JSAP seems to be one of the more popular of the older Java-based command-line parsing libraries. It’s relatively easy to use for basic functionality like that demonstrated in this post, but also offers additional flexibility and customizability for more complex needs.

Według niego to » zasłona dymna «.
Potem do 2010 roku Michał Fajbusiewicz.

0

Spór w obozie dobrej zmiany to efekt lekceważenia prezydenta — mówi wicemarszałek Sejmu Stanisław Tyszka (Kukiz’15) w «Rzeczpospolitej», pytany o spory prezydenta Andrzeja Dudy z Antonim Macierewiczem i Zbigniewem Ziobrą.
