Official: 4 US tourists attacked with acid in France

0

The Marseille prosecutor’s office says four young female U. S. tourists have been attacked with acid in Marseille’s main train station by a woman who has been arrested.
Four young American women were attacked with acid Sunday in the French city of Marseille by a woman who has been arrested, the Marseille prosecutor’s office said.
Two of the tourists were injured in the face in the attack in the city’s main Saint Charles train station and one of them has a possible eye injury, a spokeswoman for the Marseille prosecutor’s office told The Associated Press in a phone call.
She said all four of the women, who are in their 20s, have been hospitalized, two of them for shock.
The spokeswoman said the 41-year-old female suspect did not make any extremist threats or declarations during the attack. She said there were no obvious indications that the woman’s actions were terror-related, but added that officials could not be 100 percent sure about ruling out terror links at such an early stage of the investigation.
The spokeswoman spoke on condition of anonymity, per the custom of the French judicial system.
She did not release any further details about the suspects or the victims, including where in the United States the tourists were from.
The Marseille fire department was alerted just after 11 a.m. and dispatched four vehicles and 14 firefighters to the train station, a department spokeswoman said.
Two of the Americans were «slightly injured» with acid but did not require emergency medical treatment from medics at the scene, the spokeswoman said. She requested anonymity in keeping with fire department protocol.
A spokesman for the United States embassy in Paris said the U. S. consulate in Marseille was in contact with French authorities about the attack investigation and the condition of the American women.
U. S. authorities in France are not immediately commenting further on what happened to protect the privacy of the American tourists, embassy spokesman Alex Daniels said.
Marseille is a port city in southern France that is closer to Barcelona than Paris.
In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver deliberately rammed into two bus stops last month, killing a woman, but officials said it wasn’t terror-related.
In April, French police say they thwarted an imminent «terror attack» and arrested two suspected radicals in Marseille just days before the first round of France’s presidential election. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters the two suspects «were getting ready to carry out an imminent, violent action» on French territory.
In January 2016, a 15-year-old Turkish Kurd was arrested after attacking a Jewish teacher on a Marseille street. He told police he acted in the name of the Islamic State group.

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M…
ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (AP) — A longtime reporter at an Albuquerque TV station has died after the news helicopter he was piloting crashed in central New Mexico, authorities said Sunday.
Bob Martin, 64, was pronounced dead at the crash scene Saturday night, according to New Mexico State Police.
KRQE-TV said Martin worked for the station for more than 20 years, frequently shooting, writing and editing stories. It wasn’t immediately clear if Martin was headed to cover a story at the time of the crash.
«Here at KRQE, we all had great respect for Bob and cherished his friendship,» the station said on its website Sunday morning.
KRQE said the helicopter crashed about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in rugged terrain north of Carrizozo, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) southeast of Albuquerque.
State Police said it was notified of a downed aircraft shortly after 5 p.m. and found the remnants of the helicopter along with its sole occupant.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were investigating the cause of the crash, police said.

Ahead of U. N. meetings, Trump aides call for more pressure on North Korea

0

Trump officials also say they are willing to discuss climate change, but will stay out of Paris deal.
NEW YORK — President Trump and top aides warmed up for this week’s series of United Nations meetings by calling for more global pressure on North Korea and to at least talk about global efforts to address climate change.
After a late-night phone call between Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the White House said the two leaders will meet at the U. N. and remain «committed to continuing to take steps to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities and to maximize economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea.»
In tweeting about the call with Moon, Trump referred to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as «Rocket Man» and appeared to refer to economic sanctions by saying that «long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!»

North Korea threatens to ‘sink’ Japan and turn U. S. to ‘ashes and darkness’
Meanwhile, National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster said during Sunday show interviews that new stories suggesting Trump has changed his mind about the U. S. withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement are false. But he added that the administration is open to discussing the issue.
«He’s open to any discussions that will help us improve the environment, that will help us ensure energy security and will advance our prosperity and the prosperity of American workers and American businesses,» McMaster said on ABC’s This Week .
North Korea’s nuclear threats and climate change are among the main topics as Trump makes his first appearance as president at the United Nations General Assembly. The president is scheduled to address the assembly Tuesday and to meet separately with other world leaders throughout the week.
Trump plans to ask U. N. members, particularly China, to help pressure North Korea into giving up nuclear weapons and to stop threatening to use them.
While Trump has questioned the effectiveness of existing sanctions, U. N. Ambassador Nikki Haley told CNN that North Korea «is already starting to feel the pinch. That’s the reason you seeing them reacting the way they are.»
Despite longtime criticism from Trump, Kim’s government in recent months has threatened U. S. facilities in Guam, fired two missiles over Japan and tested a hydrogen bomb .
Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Haley said that while the United States seeks a diplomatic solution in North Korea, it is also prepared to use a military option under the leadership of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
«If the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will be destroyed,» she told CNN.
If diplomacy doesn’t work, Haley said, «General Mattis will take care of it.»
Some United Nations members, in the meantime, want Trump to reconsider his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate change agreement reached by the Obama administration. A news report over the weekend said Trump was considering that option, but administration officials denied it.
The Paris deal puts more demands on the United States than on other countries when it comes to cutting carbon emissions, McMaster said. He noted that when Trump made his announcement in June about withdrawal, he said he was open to talk about a revamped agreement.
«He’s out of the Paris climate record, but he says the door is open,» McMaster told Fox News Sunday .

Trump comments on London attack draw rebuke from United Kingdom
The topic of terrorism is also likely to surface at the United Nations, especially in light of Friday’s attack in a London subway train .
On ABC, McMaster echoed a Trump tweet calling for a tougher travel ban into the United States, saying «this is something we’re looking at.»
The administration’s current ban, affecting travel from six Muslim-majority countries, is the subject of legal challenges.
While opponents describe the ban as an unconstitutional religious test, McMaster said it is a «first step» toward improved border screening designed to weed out potential terrorists.
«If you can’t screen people effectively to know who’s coming into your country, then you shouldn’t allow people from that country to travel,» McMaster said.
Trump’s political opponents pointed to what they called a series of mixed messages on national security, the environment and border security, as well as other issues.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., speaking on ABC, cited Trump’s changed positions on what to do about the status of children brought into the United States illegally by their parents, a group known as the DREAMers.
«It’s very difficult to tell day-to-day what the administration intends with climate, with the DREAMers, and any host of other issues,» Schiff said.

The Vermont Public Utility Commission is investigating the business practices of a California company that installs rooftop solar energy systems.
The Rutland Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2x9IG1O) that the state Public Service Department asked the PUC to investigate SolarCity Corp., which is owned by the electric car company Tesla Motors, and has been doing business in Vermont since 2015. In an order issued last week, the PUC said it is looking into whether SolarCity has built electricity-generating facilities in Vermont without approval from the commission.
The company says the problem is that hit filed its applications online without realizing that paper copies also were required.

The Latest: Nation's littlest post office beats Irma

0

Progress is slowly underway in the badly damaged Florida Keys where Hurricane Irma made landfall.
The Latest on Hurricane Irma in Florida (all times local):
11:30 a.m.
At just 61 square-feet it’s the smallest post office in the nation, but it still held its own against Hurricane Irma.
The Ochopee Post Office in rural Collier County lost power temporarily, but stood strong as Irma destroyed several buildings in the area, including the home of the postal clerk.
The Naples Daily News reports that Postal Clerk Shannon Mitchell lost her home in the storm and so did several of her family members.
The littlest post office has one 131-mile mail route serving more than 900 residents, including delivery on the Miccosukee Indian Reservation.
Mitchell opened the office on Friday.

Review: Roger Waters spectacular at Nassau Coliseum in New York (Includes first-hand account)

0

On September 16, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roger Waters (formerly of Pink Floyd) performed at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum on Long Island as part of his «Us + Them» tour, for an excellent turnout.
Uniondale — On September 16, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roger Waters (formerly of Pink Floyd) performed at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum on Long Island as part of his «Us + Them» tour, for an excellent turnout. It was followed by the more aggressive «One of these Days,» where green and red lights dimmed from the stage. This was well-received with a tremendous response from the Nassau Coliseum audience. The clocks background on the televised screens was appropriate for the percussion driven «Time,» which Waters showcased his crisp, lead vocals. Jessica Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the indie group «Welcome to the Machine» was one of the highlights from the first set, which featured an animated background. He managed to get the fans to put their hands up in the air, and he incorporated it as a crowd singalong. After switching guitars from electric to acoustic, Waters treated his Nassau Coliseum concertgoers to «Déjà Vu» from his latest Is This The Life We Really Want? album, where he showcased his rich, baritone voice on the haunting tune. «The Last Refugee» featured the song’s music video playing in the background, which began with an expressive, interpretive dance. The iconic rocker was not afraid to speak his mind on the vituperative «Picture That,» which was raw and authentic. Once he lifted up his acoustic guitar at the end of the song, the audience gave him a raucous round of applause. Just when one thought that Rogers could not possibly get any better, he proves everybody wrong again with an empowering version of «Wish You Were Here,» with Lucius’ Holly Laessig and Jessica Wolfe on background vocals. The first half of his show concluded with «Another Brick in the Wall,» where 10 children took the stage (joining the ladies of Lucius), and the kids were dressed in orange prison jumpsuits, and towards the end, they uncovered themselves (by getting out of the orange jumpsuits), thus revealing their «Resist» black T-shirts. «There are your kids,» Roger Waters said. «They are amazing. You should be proud of them,» he added, complimenting them. They were from the Prodigy School of the Arts from Hempstead. He noted that they will take a 20 minute break, and then he and his band will do another set. In the second part of his show, the technology got even more elaborate, with on screen projects at both sides of the stage, with several smokestacks and a giant Anti-Trump pig that was floating around. Waters opened with Dogs,» and continued with «Pigs (Three Different Ones)» and the witty, sassy tune «Money.» «Please help we are trapped in a dystopian nightmare,» one of the quotes read. He even poked fun at several of Trump’s inaccurate quotations on the televised screens, where he confused 9/11, with 7-11, among others (including his high IQ). Waters closed his set with «Brain Damage» and «Eclipse,» which featured the gorgeous pyramid, as he took his fans on a trip down memory lane to the early 70’s and the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon album. For his encore, he performed «Vera,» as well as the sultry «Bring the Boys Back Home» and «Comfortably Numb,» with neat laser lights gracing the venue, which was a beautiful spectacle. The Verdict Overall, Roger Waters was incredible at the new Nassau Coliseum, for his second consecutive show at this venue. He played for well over two hours, and gave Long Island his all. His entire band was talented as a whole. The crowd was aware of the fact that they were in the presence of a rock and roll icon. He did not do much talking, and he allowed the music and the visuals to speak for themselves. He was successful in taking his fans and listeners on a musical journey through this innovative experience. His live show garnered five out of five stars. His entire show was a technological masterpiece from start to finish, with visually striking scenery, as well as creative and psychedelic backgrounds. Waters took the stage promptly a little after 8:10 p.m., and it began with ambient music in the background, with a peaceful scene of a beach with «Spoke to Me.» The stage immediately broke into galaxy scenery for «Breathe.» His guitar player Jonathan Wilson delighted on the smooth vocals of the latter tune. Jessica Wolfe and Holly Laessig of the indie group Lucius, who served as his backing vocalists, were superb on «The Great Gig in the Sky.»»Welcome to the Machine» was one of the highlights from the first set, which featured an animated background.

UK PM May Echoes Trump on Rooting Out 'Extremist Ideology'

0

Not willing to follow President Donald Trump’s calls for tougher travel bans, British Prime Minister Theresa May instead pivot focus to extreme vetting of those entering her country and getting to the root of hateful extremist ideology on the Internet.
Not willing to follow President Donald Trump’s calls for tougher travel bans, British Prime Minister Theresa May instead pivot focus to extreme vetting of those entering her country and getting to the root of «hateful extremist ideology» on the Internet.
«I think what is important is that we’re able to have the powers to look into people, to identify people who may be wanting to cause us harm and are plotting to cause us harm – and to be able to take the necessary action when people do cause us harm,» May told ABC’s «This Week» with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.
As much as May would not confirm support for President Trump’s call for a stronger travel ban, she did say they «work well together» and reminded viewers of her moves as U. K. home secretary which brought tougher bans on «extremist hate preachers.»
May is coming to the United States this week to speak to the United Nations and said her focus will be on «ensuring that we can stop terrorists from plotting online, plotting on the internet, and that we can stop the spread of the hateful extremist ideology, which can inspire terrorism.»
«One of the issues that we really need to be addressing, and I’ll be raising this when I’m at United Nations, is the question of the use of the Internet by terrorists for terrorist planning, but also this using it for the spread of extremism, of hatred, of propaganda that can incite and can inspire terrorism,» May told Stephanopoulos.
«I think that’s really important for us,» she added after London was investigating its latest terror attack, a partially exploded bomb Friday on the London Underground.
Also in the «This Week» interview, May vowed to make U. K.’s Brexit a reality, finalizing a move to pull out from the European Union.
«Some people look at Brexit and think that it was about the U. K. turning inward – it wasn’t,» she said. «It’s about us actually looking out around the rest of the world, but ensuring we can control our own laws, our money, and our borders.
«It will happen. We’re in the negotiations. . .. I’m going to pass Brexit, I’m going to make sure that Brexit happens because the British people voted for it. And I think it’s really important that politicians actually do respond and do listen to people. We gave the public the choice. They made their choice.»
As for her relationship with President Trump, May reiterated «I do get on with him,» despite some dissension within the U. K. people. And she said there will be a U. K. visit by President Trump, eventually.
«Her Majesty the Queen issued the invitation,» she said. «The president has accepted it. It’s just a question of getting dates to and sorting out the logistics.»

Police say there's a 'strong possibility' that 2 Louisiana slayings were racially motivated

0

The suspect, Kenneth Gleason, was being held on drug charges, but authorities didn’t immediately have enough evidence to arrest him on charges related to the killings
BATON ROUGE, La. — The slayings of two black men in Baton Rouge last week were likely racially motivated, police said Sunday, and a suspect — a 23-year-old white man — was in custody. In both shootings the gunman fired from his car then walked up to the victims as they were lying on the ground and fired again multiple times.
The suspect, Kenneth Gleason, was being held on drug charges. Authorities didn’t immediately have enough evidence to arrest him on charges related to the killings, but the investigation was ongoing, Baton Rouge Sgt. L’Jean Mckneely told The Associated Press.
“The victims were… ambushed,” Mckneely said. “There is a strong possibility that it could be racially motivated.”
Mckneely said shell casings from the shootings linked the two slayings, and a car belonging to Gleason fit the description of the vehicle used in the killings. He said authorities had collected other circumstantial evidence but he wouldn’t say what it was.
Neither victim had any prior relationship with Gleason. It wasn’t immediately clear if Gleason had an attorney or when his first court appearance would be.
The shootings happened about five miles from each other. The first occurred Tuesday night when 59-year-old Bruce Cofield, who was homeless, was shot to death. The second happened Thursday night when 49-year-old Donald Smart was gunned down while walking to his job as a dishwasher at a cafe popular with Louisiana State University students, Mckneely said.
My nephew, I love him, and he was on his way to work and that makes it so sad.
Smart’s aunt, Mary Smart, said she was still dealing with the shock of her nephew’s death.
“I’m feeling down and depressed. My nephew, I love him, and he was on his way to work and that makes it so sad,” she said in a telephone interview Sunday. “He was always smiling and hugging everybody. A lot of people knew him.”
Smart had a son and two daughters, she said.
She declined to comment on police allegations that her nephew might have been shot because of the colour of his skin.
“I cannot say,” she said. “Only God knows.”
No one answered the door at Gleason’s house in a quiet neighbourhood of mostly ranch-style homes with well-kept lawns, located about 16 kilometres from the sites of the shootings.
“He looks like any clean-cut American kid,” said neighbour Nancy Reynolds, who said she didn’t know Gleason or his family. She said it was “hard to believe this sort of thing is still happening.”
Gleason didn’t appear to have any active social media profiles, and two of his maternal aunts declined to comment when reached by phone by the AP. Messages left at his parents’ house and at another aunt’s house were not returned.
East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said a judge could issue a ruling on bond for Gleason later Sunday. Moore wouldn’t comment on what led investigators to him.
“We’re actively investigating right now,” Moore said.
Detectives searched Gleason’s home on Saturday and found 9 grams of marijuana and vials of human growth hormone at his house, according to a police document. After Gleason was read his Miranda rights, he claimed ownership of the drugs, the document said.
Louisiana’s capital, a city of 229,000, is known for its championship college football team and its political scene. A year ago, racial tensions roiled the city when a black man was shot to death by white police officers outside of a convenience store. About two weeks later, a black gunman targeted police in an ambush, killing three officers before he was shot to death. The city is about 55 per cent black and 40 per cent white.
Smart consistently showed up for his overnight shift as a dishwasher at Louie’s Cafe in a spotless white T-shirt and bright white Nike tennis shoes, The Advocate newspaper reported.
“I’ve seen 26 years of folks washing dishes in a busy diner and this guy is untouchable,” Louie’s general manager, Fred Simonson, was quoted as saying. “When you have an employee like Donald, he’s the type of person who’s going to make the person next to him better.”
