Donald Trump Jr. wollte russische Infos über "Eignung" Clintons

0

L.A. wants to be home to Amazon's second headquarters. It may be a long shot

0

Amazon’s search for a second headquarters in North America is likely to set off a fight among metro cities. Here’s how L.A.’s chances stack up.
Amazon.com announced Thursday that it’s launching a search for a second headquarters in North America. The $5-billion project — and the prospect of 50,000 new jobs — already has sent cities scrambling to land the deal.
Here are some arguments for and against Los Angeles:
Amazon said it would give priority to areas with more than 1 million people that are within 45 minutes of an international airport.
In addition, “a highly educated labor pool is critical and a strong university system is required” in the area, Amazon said in its request for proposal from potential bidders.
The company also is looking for places where its thousands of employees will enjoy living. That means “recreational opportunities, educational opportunities, and an overall high quality of life, ” the company said.
A new Amazon headquarters in L.A. would bring the company closer to its Amazon Studios division, which is based in Santa Monica.
The TV division of the studio shoots many of its shows in the L.A. region, including “Transparent, ” “Bosch” and “The Last Tycoon.”
The studio has quickly become a major Hollywood player. It produced last year’s Academy Award-winning “Manchester by the Sea” and has lured talented stars including Woody Allen, “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner and “Boyhood” filmmaker Richard Linklater to create original movies and TV series.
This year, Amazon will make its first foray into film distribution when it releases Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” in December. In the past, Amazon has partnered with indie distributors, including Roadside Attractions and Bleecker Street, to bring its movies to cinemas.
“Amazon is investing hand over fist in entertainment content, ” said Tom Forte, senior research analyst at D. A. Davidson. “So that element would be a slam dunk.”
The Amazon founder bought a Spanish-style estate in Beverly Hills for $24.5 million in 2007. But last month, he expanded his compound.
The Times’ Hot Property reported that he bought a neighboring home for $12.9 million in a deal completed outside the Multiple Listing Service.
Tax records show the home has 4,586 square feet of interior space on one level. Formal living and dining rooms, four bedrooms and six full bathrooms are among living spaces. There are two fireplaces.
The two combined estates total about 2.5 acres.
The Los Angeles and Long Beach ports combine to create the nation’s largest port complex. Roughly 40% of U. S. imports pass through the ports, which support hundreds of thousands of logistics jobs throughout the region.
Many of those goods are trucked to warehouses in the Inland Empire.
Amazon already has nine sprawling fulfillment centers in California, including five in the Inland Empire. It announced plans earlier this year to build two more Southern California warehouses — in Redlands and in Eastvale, near Riverside. In June, the company said, it also would be building an 855,000-square-foot facility in Fresno.
There are several other big cities, however, that also meet Bezos requirements.
Many mayors — including Nashville’s Megan Barry, Pittsburgh’s Bill Peduto and St. Louis’ Lyda Krewson — quickly voiced their interest, signaling a fierce battle among some of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas could be imminent.
Both rent and home prices have soared in recent years, putting a strain on family budgets and the ability to take out a mortgage.
Businesses are now citing the region’s high cost of living as an impediment to growth. And coastal residents are increasingly moving to cheaper locales in the Inland Empire or out of state in an effort to own a house.
“I personally think this is more about housing than anything else, ” said Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles. “So Riverside makes more sense than L.A. Or Bakersfield. But you couldn’t pay me to live there.”
Amazon might make a similar decision and determine that coastal Southern California is simply too expensive.
For example, the median price for a home in the L.A.-Orange County metro region was $611,100 in July, while the median rent for an apartment was $2,455, according to Zillow. The median price in Austin, Texas, meanwhile is only $272,400 and rent only $1,536.
Chicago is similar priced, with the median home price at $212,300 and the median rent at $1,543.
Amazon already has an enormous West Coast presence that stretches from Washington to Southern California.
With its headquarters in Seattle, Amazon often used Seattle as a test bed for new products and services. It’s where the company beta tested its AmazonFresh grocery-delivery service as well as its Amazon Go prototype high-tech grocery store.
Adding a second headquarters in a city on the East Coast would give Amazon a fertile new testing ground, with a very different set of customers, Forte said.
“I like Virginia. AOL used to have a headquarters there, and it gets them close proximity to Washington. And Bezos owns the Post independent of Amazon, ” Forte said. “It checks a lot of boxes.”
Although Amazon hasn’ t had trouble attracting talented workers to Seattle, a non-West Coast headquarters also could help it lure employees who insist on living on the East Coast, in the South or in the Midwest.
California doesn’t always compete on tax credits compared with other states, and it already has lost out on some big corporate deals as a result.
One recent example: When Elon Musk wanted to build a massive $5-billion battery plant for Tesla, which is based in Palo Alto, he turned to Nevada.
Musk was able to secure incentives worth $1.25 billion from Nevada — no property tax for 10 years, no sales tax for 20. Plus, $195 million in tax credits that Tesla could sell for cash.
Point being, other states might be more willing to heavily subsidize Amazon’s second headquarters.
“One that comes to mind is Wisconsin, just given that they’ re bending over backward for Foxconn, ” Forte said of the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer.

Hurricane Irma and Harvey Cause Lumber Liquidators Shares to Rise

0

Lumber Liquidators’ stock is up as Hurricane Irma’s path threatens to enter Florida and Houston recovers from Hurricane Harvey.
As Houston tallies up the damage from Hurricane Harvey and Florida prepares for Irma’s potential landfall, Wall Street investors are searching for potential winners amid what are shaping up to be two of the costliest storms in U. S. history.
One such high-climber? Lumber Liquidators, a hardwood flooring firm that could benefit as homeowners seek material to rebuild.
Lumber Liquidators has been in a slump since 2015, when 60 Minutes reported, and the CDC later confirmed, that some of its products could increase users’ risk of cancer. The company’s stock rallied slightly after the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission completed a probe without issuing recalls. But the Commission also failed to reassure consumers with health concerns, causing lasting damage to the brand’s appeal.
But Lumber Liquidators’ stock is now hitting levels not seen since just after the 60 Minutes segment — in part thanks to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.
Ever since the National Hurricane Center began issuing advisories on Harvey starting August 17, shares of home improvement companies have been on the rise — Home Depot’s stock has risen about 5% since then, while Lowe’s has risen 3%. But Lumber Liquidators has outperformed many of its peers on the Dow Jones Home Improvement Retailers index. While the index, which tracks stock performance of 45 companies in the industry, rose 0.32%, Lumber Liquidators has jumped about 13% since mid-August. That suggests some investors are betting that shoppers will get over Lumber Liquidators’ past as homeowners buy material for rebuilding efforts.
Part of the Lumber Liquidators’ outperformance may also stem from the company’s steady recovery; the firm’s stock price has risen by nearly 150% since January. «Overall, we view the recent move higher in shares of Lumber Liquidators to reflect a combination of investors still ‘waking up’ to the compelling turnaround story at the chain . ., » said Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel in an email to Fortune. The company’s second quarter earnings beat also helped move the stock higher, though shares remain down about 66% since their all-time high of $119 in 2013.
Another factor likely helping Lumber Liquidators outperform its peers: volatility. There are far fewer of the firm’s shares available for trade in comparison to, say, Lowe’s or Home Depot, meaning the stock price can move more dramatically with fewer total shares traded. Moreover, Lumber Liquidators’ past has also turned it into a heavily shorted stock—about 25% of its available shares are being shorted. It’s likely that short sellers are buying shares of the company as it rises in order to cover their positions, which would also drive up the stock’s price.

Here are the cities that match Amazon's wish list for its second headquarters

0

To help Amazon narrow its search for a second headquarters, CNBC ranked cities based on key criteria the company cited in its pitch for incentives.
Amazon just kicked off a location search for its second headquarters, and the retailer created a wish list to help find the perfect spot for its new campus. In its proposal, Amazon said it’s looking for a city of more than 1 million people with an international airport, mass transit, quality higher education, an educated workforce and a solid business climate.
To help the world’s largest e-commerce company narrow down its search, CNBC looked at some of the key criteria the online retailer laid out in its pitch to cities and states.
The competition has already prompted local officials to tout their city’s appeal. «New York City has the most innovative and diverse tech sector in the nation, » said Anthony Hogrebe, a spokesman for the New York City Economic Development Corp. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh immediately jumped into the ring, too. «If Amazon wants an East Coast headquarters, I don’t see any city better in America than Boston, Massachusetts, » he said. To measure how prospective cities stack up, we looked at the list of cities with at least 1 million people and then ranked them in five categories: local airport traffic, mass transit ridership, the number of accredited higher educational institutions, the share of the workforce with at least a college degree and the pace of job growth over the last 12 months.
In its request for proposals, the company wasn’t shy about asking states and cities to cough up incentives — from donated land to breaks on taxes and fees to relocation subsidies. In return, Amazon pointed to its Seattle headquarters as a sign of what it could bring to a new host city. Its workforce has grown to more than 380,000 from less than 25,000 since it moved to downtown Seattle in 2010, the company said. It plans to invest $5 billion and employ some 50,000 workers in its second headquarters. The company has a strong track record of tapping state and local governments’ generosity. Amazon has been awarded 70 state and local subsidies, totaling at least $732.79 million in value, since 2000, according to nonprofit Good Jobs First. Texas leads the way with granting the most subsidy value to Amazon, followed by Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois, the group told Reuters. But it remains to be seen which cities and states will step up to participate in Amazon’s bidding war.
Until then, the competitors can tout the infrastructure and workforce characteristics the company is targeting. When we ranked the top 20 cities in each of those criteria, some of them began to stand out.
Beyond the incentives it gets from state and local governments, Amazon will need to secure enough land for a sizable complex. Its current Seattle campus includes 8.1 million square feet of space in 33 buildings and employs more than 40,000 people. The company said its new second headquarters would initially need more than 500,000 square feet and up to 8 million square feet beyond 2027. But first it needs to pick a city. To better rank them overall, we gave each city points based on how they rank in Amazon’s criteria and then added up the score. Based on those results, Amazon might want to give New York, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston a close look.
«We want to find a city that is excited to work with us and where our customers, employees, and the community can all benefit, » Amazon said.
The company isn’t limiting its search to the U. S. In its proposal Amazon said it’s looking for a location in North America, and asked for proposals from states, cities or provinces. For our search, given the challenges of locating in Cuba, Haiti or Guatemala, we limited the starting list to the U. S., Canada and Mexico.
With 11 cities of sufficient population, Mexico offers some intriguing prospects for an online retailer with global ambitions. Those cities play host to some of the features Amazon is looking for, including mass transit, international airports, and colleges and universities. But we eliminated Mexican cities for a simple, unscientific reason. It seems likely that Amazon would face enormous political backlash, especially from President Donald Trump, who has complained bitterly about companies moving jobs to Mexico. The president has also has criticized Amazon for doing «great damage» to retailers, costing jobs in cities and states. (Not to mention Trump’s Twitter broadsides against The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos .)
Amazon said it was seeking proposals by Oct. 19 and would select the location next year.

SpaceX launches Air Force's super-secret minishuttle

0

SpaceX launched the Air Force’s super-secret space shuttle on Thursday, a technology tester capable of spending years in orbit.
The unmanned Falcon rocket blasted off from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, as schools and businesses boarded up for Hurricane Irma.
It’s the fifth flight for one of these crewless minishuttles, known as the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle.
The two Air Force space planes have already logged a combined 5 ½ years in orbit. But officials won’t say what the spacecraft are doing up there. The last mission lasted almost two years and ended with a May touchdown at the runway formerly used by NASA’s space shuttles. The first one launched in 2010.
As has become customary, SpaceX landed its leftover booster back at Cape Canaveral for eventual reuse.
This was the first time SpaceX has provided a lift for the experimental minishuttle. The previous missions relied on United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rockets. Air Force officials said they want to use a variety of rockets for the X-37B program, to launch quickly if warranted.
The Boeing-built minishuttle is 29 feet long, with a 14-foot wingspan. By comparison, NASA’s retired space shuttles were 122 feet long, with a 78-foot wingspan.
SpaceX stopped providing details about the X-37B’s climb to orbit, a few minutes after liftoff at the Air Force’s request. The booster’s return to SpaceX’s landing zone at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, however, was broadcast live.
«The Falcon has safely landed, » a SpaceX launch controller announced. Cheers erupted at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.
It was SpaceX’s 16th successful return of a first-stage booster. Booster rockets are normally discarded at sea.

Fußball: Englische Premier League verkürzt Transferperiode

0

(dpa)

President Donald Trump has fiscally conservative Republicans in a serious bind.
It began Wednesday, when Trump made the shocking decision to back a Democratic proposal to tie a short-term government spending and debt ceiling extension to Hurricane Harvey relief funding, which likely strengthened the minority’s negotiating position on Congress’s legislative priorities this fall. But Thursday, it was reported that Trump also agreed with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on a goal to permanently scrap the federal debt ceiling, according to the Washington Post.
Trump confirmed Thursday he discussed the matter the day before during a meeting with Schumer, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, and Republican congressional leaders Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. “For many years, people have been talking about getting rid of [the] debt ceiling altogether, and there are a lot of good reasons to do that, ” the president said before meeting the Kuwaiti emir.
“It complicates things. It’s really not necessary.”
Of course, Republicans have long advocated for balancing the budget and shrinking the federal debt. In the view of many conservatives, making it difficult for Congress to continue its out-of-control spending is not a bug, but a feature. While the debt ceiling is not a spending cap, it is a check on borrowing—something the government has done to the point of amassing $19.8 trillion of debt.
Republican senator Ted Cruz said “of course” the debt ceiling should not be eliminated when asked about it Thursday, per Bloomberg News’s Sahil Kapur .
Trump promised during the presidential campaign that America would balance the books “ fairly quickly ” if he was elected. “We have to straighten out our country, ” he told Sean Hannity in April 2016. But paying off the debt is not exactly at the top of the to-do list for Democrats—with whom Trump agreed on two significant fiscal issues in the span of one meeting.
The news is a horror show to Republicans like House speaker Paul Ryan, who once made his bones in Congress pushing fiscal responsibility as budget chairman. Ryan called the Harvey-debt ceiling plan “ridiculous” just hours before Trump embraced it Wednesday. But his objection Thursday to Trump’s alignment with Schumer on the debt ceiling was demure.
“I won’ t get into a private conversation that we had [at the White House] , but I think there’s a legitimate role for the power of the purse of the Article 1 powers, and that’s something we defend here in Congress, ” Ryan said during a press conference.
