Africa Roundup: eBay expands, Google CEO visits Lagos, Ghana enters space

eBay opened up its U. S. platform to Africa through its partnership with MallforAfrica.com. Americans can now buy products on eBay from select vendors in six African countries, starting with merchandise categories of fashion, art, jewelry, and clothing.
For the new program, MallforAfrica selects the sellers and handles payments on its proprietary platform. DHL is the shipping partner. Online shoppers can browse the entire collection on eBay’s Mall for Africa Store.
The new online channel expands an existing relationship between the two e-commerce companies. In 2016, they launched the eBay Powered by MallforAfrica platform allowing U. S. vendors to sell in Africa.
The program taps goods from merchants in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Burundi. “We’ ll be adding more sellers and more countries, ” eBay’s Sylvie de Wever told TechCrunch in this feature .
Google launched new Africa initiatives, on the back of CEO Sundar Pichai’s recent Nigeria trip.
While visiting Lagos he announced the global internet services company’s plans to train 10 million Africans in digital skills over the next 5 years. Alphabet will also increase its funding to African startups, provide $20 million in grants to digital non-profits, and offer modified versions of products (such as YouTube) in Africa―where internet users can face costlier data plans and slower download speeds than other Google markets.
“A lot of what we’ re doing is making it easier for the average person to take advantage of the web, ” Bunmi Banjo, Google’s Growth Engine and Brand Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa, told TechCrunch .
Ghana’s first sattelite―GhanaSat-1―began its orbit recently, with a little help from some friends. The cubesat, built by a Ghanaian engineering team at All Nations University, was delivered to NASA’s International Space Station in June on a SpaceX rocket that took off from pad 39a at Kennedy Space Center, a NASA spokesperson.
Weeks later, GhanaSat-1 deployed into orbit from the Center and is now operational.
“This particular satellite has two missions, ” Project Manager Damoah told TechCrunch . “It has cameras on board for detailed monitoring of the coastlines of Ghana. Then there’s an educational piece―we want to use it to integrate satellite technology into high school curriculum.”
The GhanaSat-1 deployment marks increased interest and activity in Africa toward space exploration. Nigeria’s first cubesat launched on the same SpaceX mission. Several nations, such as South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia have space agencies. Angola announced its intention to launch a satellite over the coming year.
And the African Union announced its African Space Policy and Strategy initiative last year prompting AU members states “to realize an African Outer space Programme, as one of the flagship programs….of the AU Agenda.”
Could we see an African space station sometime in the future? It seems quite ambitious. But then again, not so many years sceptics doubted that Africa’s tech sector would ever attract big VC, blue chip IT companies, or produce unicorns. All those milestones have been passed.

New England Patriots got the humbling loss they probably needed

0

This was the same team that was getting thumped 28-3 for three quarters in the Super Bowl. And like that team, they have a history of responding to this kind of setback.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — More than any sports franchise on American soil, the New England Patriots refuse to bask in the glories of their past. Bill Belichick won a record fifth Super Bowl title on a record comeback in February, and before he even boarded the plane heading home he was complaining he was five weeks behind the league-wide losers in preparing for 2017.
The Patriots live the stay-in-the-moment cliché every hour of every day. They don’t spend any more time polishing past trophies than they do booking Super Bowl hotel reservations in the middle of October. But on Thursday night, before opening the season against a room-temperature opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots finally surrendered to human nature. They finally stopped for a moment to tell themselves, You know what, we are pretty damn special.
The Patriots’ title defense got off to a stunningly bad start, as the Chiefs strung together big play after big play in an opening-night romp. All things are possible for the Chiefs after victory over Patriots Alex Smith and the Chiefs dismantled the defending champs on their home field Thursday, opening the season with a resounding 42-27 win.
And they are, of course. Given that the NFL has long seen parity as a virtue, and uses the draft, salary cap, schedule, and free agency to protect that virtue, the Patriots of Belichick and Tom Brady might go down as the greatest dynasty in all of team sports.
They had earned their pregame party and the unveiling of their new banner. But the postings on the Gillette Stadium scoreboards that read «ATL 28 NE 3» and «2: 12 3RD QTR» seemed a bit overdone for a franchise that never dances in yesterday’s confetti. So did the five oversized Lombardi Trophies that were rolled onto the field, along with the thousands of fans who booed Roger Goodell when he stepped onto the field during warm-ups, wearing T-shirts and waving towels carrying the image of Goodell wearing a clown’s red nose.
Yes, in his first regular-season appearance in Foxborough since Deflategate turned into a raging hot mess, Goodell might’ve had a harsh New England welcome coming to him. But the Patriots have won two Super Bowls since that story first broke. The team and its fans had already won that fight, and yet continued to spend time and energy flailing away at a commissioner who made himself an easy target.
So in that context, it was fitting the Patriots opened a season that some observers, including this one, believed could end with an historic 19-0 record and got hammered by the Chiefs, who came in a lot hotter than room temperature after all. They scored 42 points, more than any points New England has ever surrendered in Belichick’s 17-plus years. They gained 537 yards, more than any yards New England has ever surrendered in Belichick’s 17-plus years. Just as the Chiefs did in 2014, when they dropped 41 on the Patriots in Week 4, they made the ageless Brady look about as old as his birth certificate suggested.
Brady went under center Thursday night as a 40-year-old regular-season starter for the first time. When he was done misfiring on 20-of-36 passes and failing to throw for a single touchdown, nobody dared write or say that Brady was done as a dynasty maker the way they wrote and said he was done in 2014. He was angry all the same. Brady was asked about Rob Gronkowski’s failure to hold on to a touchdown pass in the first quarter, a pass that could’ve given the Patriots a 14-0 lead and instead altered the momentum of the game, and this is what he said:
«That was a disappointing play. I mean, that would have been a big play in the game. We just didn’t make it. We didn’t make a lot of plays tonight actually. So we just have to be a lot better in a lot of areas, starting with our attitude and competitiveness.»
Attitude and competitiveness? Tom Brady was questioning his team’s attitude and competitiveness?
«I just think we need to have more urgency, » he said, «and go out there and perform a lot better. That is a winning attitude, a championship attitude, that you need to bring every day, and we had it handed to us on our own field. It’s a terrible feeling.»
It’s a rare feeling, too. The Chiefs beat the Patriots with the blazing speed of Tyreek Hill and rookie Kareem Hunt, who had scores of 75 and 78 yards, and with decisive power and patience on the 90-yard drive following the missed Brady-Gronk connection in the first quarter. When the Patriots tried to keep their offense on the field in short-yardage situations, the Chiefs physically dominated them up front and made the game-shaping stops.
«Just a very poor effort, » Brady said.
«Bad defense, bad coaching, bad playing, bad football, » a barely audible Belichick said. «There were problems all over the place.»
The defensive front was as concerning as advertised, as Alex Smith, a consistent and reliable character actor, suddenly turned into Marlon Brando. He threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns, including his 75-yarder to a wide-open Hill streaking down the sideline at Olympic-like speed.
Even before Danny Amendola went down because of his head injury, Brady was going to miss Julian Edelman and Malcolm Mitchell — especially Edelman. As much as it was mentioned that Brady won it all without Gronkowski last season, Edelman did make the most important and most bizarre catch in the Super Bowl LI victory over Atlanta, and he did score the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl XLIX victory over Seattle. He had more than 1,100 receiving yards last year. His absence was going to hurt.
In the end, Kansas City acted as if it didn’t want to be Kansas City anymore. The Chiefs have averaged nearly 11 wins over the regular season for the past four years but have fizzled in the playoffs. But the Chiefs looked hungrier and angrier than the Patriots. At halftime, Michele Tafoya of NBC said she had a conversation with Belichick about the way the first 30 minutes went down, but that Kansas City coach Andy Reid refused to talk. You know a coach is locked in when he rejects an interview request that Belichick accepts.
Before Thursday night, the Patriots had won 87 consecutive home games when leading at the half. Before Thursday night, Brady had won 52 consecutive home games against AFC opponents when he’d effectively played the entire game.
None of that means New England should start scouting Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold. The previous three times the Patriots lost their season opener, they ended up winning the whole thing.
But first they need to figure out how to field a competitive defense. Oh, and they also need to forget about their absurd comeback victory over Atlanta.
In Week 1 of the 2017 season, the Patriots cut against their own grain and reminded the world one more time about that 28-3 deficit they overcame. And then they played like they did for the first 43 minutes in Houston last February, this time with no miracle in sight.

Apple Can’ t Afford the Next iPhone to Fail

0

Analysts say the iPhone is in a critical position right now
No matter its name, this year’s anniversary iPhone is playing a critical role for Apple, especially because it’s one of the most dramatic overhauls of the device in its history.
And an investor note offered by analyst house Guggenheim Securities shows that Apple can’ t afford the next iPhones not to succeed because otherwise, the company would be left with just one division driving the company’s growth.
It’s a well-known thing that the iPhone has been Apple’s main cash cow for many years, but this all changed in 2016 when the smartphone actually declined for the very first time since the launch. This was in complete contradiction to the 2015 performance when the iPhone recorded the biggest growth in history, as the graph attached to the article shows.
But if Guggenheim’s estimates are correct, then the iPhones are in a critical place right now, with 2017 to bring only a small growth, followed by a major boom next year. What comes next is a substantial decline that would have the iPhone no longer being the company’s number one money-making machine, with services to bring home the bacon.
Right now, Apple has no other division that could compensate for a possible decline of the iPhone, the analysts believe, so a collapse of the smartphone would represent a collapse of the company.
“Apple can’t make it up on advertising, since in contrast to consumer Internet companies like Alphabet and Facebook, whose very business models are based on giving away their service for free to then monetize users via advertising, Apple’s customers already paid up for their products, ” the analysts show.
So any follow-on services need to justify their added cost, which is one of the reasons we expect Apple to heavily promote its unique strengths in augmented reality (AR) /ARKit and start spending on exclusive original TV content for its streaming subscribers.”
Apple will take the wraps off the next-generation iPhone next week, with other analysts expecting the anniversary model to be the best-selling model in the history of the company.

Many Companies Have Poor Information Governance

0

Many companies report inadequate information governance strategies and IG training programs, and data is often lost due to staff negligence or bad practices.
Information governance is inadequate at the majority of companies, and more than one-third do not offer IG training, said a new survey. Furthermore, data lost due to staff negligence or bad practices plague companies, many of which cannot find records that are required for litigation. The study, «Governance and Compliance in 2017: A Real World View, » was conducted by AIIM, a not-for-profit organization for information professionals. The findings come at a time when regulations are getting stricter, requiring more adherence to regulatory, legal and industry operating guidelines to protect corporate and customer information. «Organizations in all industries must come to realize the importance of ensuring that their data assets are managed and shared in a sensible and secure manner, » the report states. Lack of IG training «is most likely the reason there is data loss due to staff negligence and bad practices, » said Bob Larrivee, chief analyst for AIIM. » The survey was conducted with a web-based tool that collected responses from 218 individual members of the AIIM community in June 2017. Respondents represented organizations of all sizes and from various regions: North America, Western Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Middle East, Africa and South Africa, and Asia.

Trump kassiert erneute Schlappe wegen Einreiseverbot

Stanford University's AI can tell if you're gay or straight from a photo

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly advanced, we’re hearing more warnings about their potential dangers. Elon Musk thinks they’ ll be the cause of World War 3, but based on a recent study from Stanford University, the systems could pose a more immediate threat when it comes to people’s privacy.
Michal Kosinski and Yilun Wang’s algorithm can accurately guess if a person is straight or gay based on a photo of their face. This was achieved using a sample of over 35,000 images that had been publicly posted on a US dating site, with an even representation of gay and straight (determined through their profiles) and male and female subjects.
The deep neural networks extracted features from the huge dataset, identifying certain trends to help it determine a person’s sexuality. Gay men tended to have “gender-atypical” features, expressions and grooming styles, meaning they appeared more feminine. They often had narrower jaws, longer noses and larger foreheads than straight men. The opposite was true for gay women, who generally had larger jaws and smaller foreheads.
The system was eventually able to distinguish between gay and straight men 81 percent of the time, and 74 percent of the time for women, just by reviewing a photo. When it was shown five images of the same person, accuracy levels went up to 91 percent for men and 83 percent for women. By contrast, a human was only able to identify sexual orientation 61 percent of the time for men and 54 percent for women.
The findings strongly support the theory that the same hormones affecting a fetus’ developing bone structure play a part in determining sexuality, meaning that people are born gay — it’s not a choice. Additionally, the lower success rate for women could suggest female sexual orientation is more fluid.
What’s concerning is the AI’s potential for misuse, especially for people who want to keep their sexual preferences private from friends and family. Google results show the phrase “is my husband gay?” is more common than “is my husband having an affair?”
There’s also the concern that the software could be used in countries such as Iran, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, where homosexuality is punishable by death.
This isn’ t the first time Kosinski has been linked to controversial research. His work with Cambridge University on psychometric profiling involved using Facebook profiles to create a model of someone’s personality. Donald Trump’s campaign and Brexit supporters in the UK reportedly used similar tools to target voters and help them achieve victory.

Chiefs offense defies expectations against Patriots — and more fireworks could be ahead

0

Kansas City’s normally methodical attack showed it could be far more explosive in 2017.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In the process of slaying a giant in the stunner of an NFL opener on Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs sure busted a lot of myths.
So you thought Alex Smith, that game manager of a quarterback, was ripe to be replaced?
Think again.
Smith looked like the second coming of Joe Montana during the 42-27 upheaval of the New England Patriots. Not only did he pass for four touchdowns without an interception, but he connected on a 75-yard touchdown to Tyreek Hill and a 78-yard scoring strike to the wondrous rookie, Kareem Hunt.
SIGN UP!: Best NFL coverage delivered every Monday!
Wait a minute. Smith supposedly does not have that type of downfield throwing ability, which was perceived to be a reason the Chiefs moved up to draft his eventual replacement, strong-armed Patrick Mahomes.
After all, during his first 12 NFL seasons, Smith had all of two TD passes of at least 75 yards.
Well, Smith had that arm at Gillette Stadium – where it started loud and ended quiet. On the pass to Hill, he demonstrated how he can chuck it as the blazing receiver zipped right past cornerback Stephon Gilmore and safety Devin McCourty’s busted coverage to isolate himself along the sideline. Yes, Smith could get the ball there. And on time, allowing Hill to catch it in stride.
The pass to Hunt – whose 246 yards from scrimmage were the most in an opener since the 1970 merger – had even better touch. Smith’s throw traveled about 40 yards and was placed perfectly over the shoulder of beaten defensive end Cassius Marsh. Hunt scampered the last 47 yards to pay dirt.
The deep strikes were the signature plays from a performance that undoubtedly ranks as one of the best games of Smith’s 13-year career. If that’s a new dimension for Kansas City’s offense, which would coincide with the instant threat that Hill brings, this might be some sort of juggernaut.
More: Tom Brady calls out Patriots’ effort after Chiefs’ historic outburst
More: Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt looks to be budding star in record-setting debut
But first things first. If you think Smith had extra fuel because of the buzz that the rookie Mahomes generated with an impressive summer, well, that’s another myth.
He insists that he drew no extra satisfaction for proving something to doubters.
“If you had asked me that seven, eight years ago, I would give you what you’ re looking for there, ” Smith said. “I really don’ t care. To be honest, this has been the most drama-free camp. I haven’ t been dwelling on that. For whatever reason, I’ ve just been playing, enjoying the opportunity and not looking beyond it.”
While Smith gained more rhythm and flow as the night progressed, Hunt, a third-round pick from Toledo, provided the answer to another myth – that the Chiefs offense would be in huge trouble without Spencer Ware. When Kansas City drafted Hunt, it seemed likely that he’ d break in as a complementary back to Ware, the team’s leading rusher last season.
But stuff happens. Ware is gone for the season after tearing a knee ligament. Hunt proved on opening night that he could handle a full load – even after losing a fumble on his first NFL carry. He had 22 touches (17 rushes, five receptions) while becoming the first player put up 200 yards from scrimmage with three TDs since Billy Sims in 1980. He rushed for 148 yards, averaging a whopping 8.7 yards per carry.
The Chiefs wound up with 537 yards and three scoring drives of at least 90 yards. If those weren’ t myths, they surely were not typical. A Bill Belichick defense has never allowed as many points or yards in a game during the coach’s Patriots tenure. All of last season, the Chiefs had one drive of 90 yards. You’ d have to go back to 2008 to find a season when they had two 90-yard drives. And here they had three in one game.
Hey, strange stuff must happen when Roger Goodell is in the house. When they fell behind by 10 points early in the second quarter, it may have seemed like they were deflated already. Remember, the Chiefs aren’ t built to come from behind. We’ re not talking about the Patriots here.
Myth busted.
And while they were at it, the Chiefs demonstrated just how effective an NFL team can be using all the creative wrinkles afforded with spread offense concepts and read-option plays.
There were option pitches, shovel passes and end-arounds. Creative stuff that kept the Patriots off balance and generated some timely plays.
This, remember, in a league where supposedly the college offenses won’ t work anymore.
Myth busted.
“It’s a blend of what Alex had done before, ” Reid said, referring to Smith’s college days at Utah, “and what these young kids have done. We’ ve mixed it in, made it part of our base offense. We had a couple different wrinkles (on Thursday night) , and we had a whole offseason to work on it and we were able to use some of those things.”
And it worked, like every other myth-busting element of a winning game plan.

Most South Koreans don't expect war with North, poll shows, as Trump highlights military option

0

Most South Koreans doubt that North Korea will start a war, a survey showed on Friday, just days after the North’s largest nuclear test, as President Donald Trump again highlighted the possibility of a U. S. military response.
SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Most South Koreans doubt that North Korea will start a war, a survey showed on Friday, just days after the North’s largest nuclear test, as President Donald Trump again highlighted the possibility of a U. S. military response.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has escalated as North Korea’s young leader, Kim Jong Un, has stepped up the development of weapons in defiance of U. N. sanctions, testing a string of missiles this year, including one flying over Japan, and conducting its sixth nuclear test on Sunday.
Experts believe the isolated regime is close to its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon capable of reaching the United States, something Trump has vowed to prevent.
Still, a Gallup Korea survey showed South Koreans were considerably less concerned about war compared with June 2007, nine months after North Korea conducted its first nuclear test, in September 2006.
The survey found that 58 percent of those questioned felt there was no possibility North Korea would cause a war, while only 37 percent thought it could.
In 2007,51 percent of respondents said they expected a war, while 45 percent did not.
Trump has repeatedly said all options are on the table in dealing with North Korea and on Thursday said he would prefer not to use military action, but if he did, it would be a “very sad day” for North Korea.
“Military action would certainly be an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing is inevitable, ” Trump told reporters. “If we do use it on North Korea, it will be a very sad day for North Korea.”
Even as Trump has insisted that now is not the time to talk, senior members of his administration have made clear that the door to a diplomatic solution is open, especially given the U. S. assessment that any pre-emptive strike would unleash massive North Korean retaliation.
North Korea says it needs its weapons to protect itself from U. S. aggression and regularly threatens to destroy the United States.
South Korea and the United States are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.
The USS Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered carrier, left its home port in Japan for a routine autumn patrol of the Western Pacific, a Navy spokeswoman said. That area included waters between Japan and the Korean peninsula, she added, without giving any further details.
The Ronald Reagan was out on routine patrol from May until August, and was sent to the Sea of Japan with the another carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, to take part in drills with Japan’s Self Defence Forces as well as the South Korean military.
North Korea vehemently objects to military exercises on or near the peninsula, and China and Russia have suggested the United States and South Korea halt their exercises to lower tension.
While Trump talked tough on North Korea, China agreed on Thursday that the United Nations should take more action against it, but it also pushed for dialogue.
The U. N. Security Council is expected to vote on a new set of sanctions soon. North Korea offered fresh vitriol against the pending sanctions, specifically targeting U. S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who this week accused North Korean leader Kim of “begging for war”.
“There is nothing more foolish than thinking we, a strong nuclear state, will endure this evil pressure aimed at overthrowing our state, ” the North’s official news agency said in a commentary.
