The Latest: Jurors return for church shooting sentencing

0

NewsHubCHARLESTON, S. C. (AP) — The Latest on the federal sentencing trial of convicted Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof (all times local):
9:45 a.m.
Jurors have returned for a second day of testimony in the sentencing trial of convicted church shooter Dylann Roof.
Emotions likely will be high Thursday as prosecutors call more relatives of people killed in the June 2015 attack on Emanuel AME Church. The first day was dominated by powerful testimony from the widow of pastor and state Sen. Clementa Pinckney , who told jurors of her husband’s strength and loving parenting.
Jennifer Pinckney also described hiding under a desk in the church with her daughter as the shooting went on steps away.
Prosecutors have said they plan as many as 38 witnesses, although U. S. District Judge Richard Gergel has said several times he thought that number could possibly be pared down or testimony could otherwise be consolidated.
Roof had asked that prosecutors be limited in the number of witnesses they could introduce, but that request was rejected.

3:20 a.m.
Prosecutors have called four witnesses at Dylann Roof’s sentencing and may call dozens more to try to convince jurors the convicted church killer should be sentenced to death.
The most gut-wrenching testimony so far came from Jennifer Pinckney, whose husband, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney , was one of nine black church members killed when Roof opened fire during a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Clementa Pinckney was also the pastor of the church.
A chilling 911 call Jennifer Pinckney made was played for jurors Wednesday. In it, she talks about huddling under a desk with her 6-year-old daughter.
Roof is representing himself. In brief opening remarks, he told jurors he wasn’t mentally ill. He did not ask them to spare his life.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich promises 10nm Cannon Lake PCs before the end of 2017

0

NewsHubJust a day after Qualcomm unveiled a ‘world first’ 10-nanometre (nm) server microprocessor , Intel has moved to reassure customers and users that it’s delayed 10nm ‘Cannon Lake’ architecture will be coming out in PCs before the end of this year.
Intel had originally planned to introduce the first family of 10nm processors sometime in late 2016. However, technical challenges encountered in shrinking transistors to ever smaller scales led to the launch being delayed until 2017.
At CES in Las Vegas, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich confirmed that the successor to Kaby Lake, which itself was delayed and has only just emerged, was still on track for a release this year and showed off the first 2-in-1 PC based on the 10nm architecture.
No further information about Cannon Lake was revealed, however, but better battery life, lower power consumption, less heat dissipation, and better performance ought to be benefits from microprocessors built to 10nm process manufacturing.
Krzanich was keen to point out that Moore’s Law is continuing and that, despite marking the company’s first change in process size since 2014’s Broadwell chips, Cannon Lake is proof of this.
«So for those who are wondering if Moore»s Law is alive, is 10 nanometers going to be here, the answer is absolutely yes,» he said, according to a report at Digital Trends. «And I believe Moore»s Law will be well beyond my career — alive and well and kicking. »
The company previously confirmed that it is actively working on 7nm and 5nm process technologies, too — although 5nm is probably about the limit, as far as the laws of physics are concerned, for copper on silicon.
«We can see about ten years ahead, so our research group has identified some promising options [for 7nm and 5nm] not yet fully developed, but we think we can continue Moore’s Law for at least another 10 years,» said Intel senior fellow Mark Bohr last year.
Intel’s confirmation that its 10nm chips are coming this year arrived just hours after Qualcomm detailed its first 10nm processor, the Snapdragon 835 .
The chip, which will arrive in the first half of 2017, is said to consume 25 percent less power than last year’s offering despite being 35 per cent smaller, is supported by Qualcomm’s octa-core Kryo 280 CPU and Hexagon 682 DSP and uses a new a Qualcomm Adreno 540 GPU to power 3D graphics and much more intensive VR features.

Nvidia's New Shield TV Wants To Control Your Entire Home

0

NewsHubThe increased performance of the new Shield TV enables it to deliver 4K HDR streaming video. Nvidia said the new shield is the first device to offer 4K HDR content from both Netflix and Amazon Video. The device can also access standard 4K streams from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies, and VUDU. And in the coming months, YouTube’s TV app will launch on Shield TV, which will let you stream immersive 360-degree YouTube videos to your TV.
The most surprising update for the new Shield TV is without a doubt the device’s newfound AI capabilities. Nvidia worked with Google to integrate Google Assistant into the new Shield TV, which allows you to ask Shield TV to do things for you with voice commands. The concept is like the voice command options that Microsoft’s Xbox One allows, but Nvidia took its system to the next level.
Huang likened the Shield TV’s AI capabilities to Tony Stark’s J. A. R. V. I. S. AI assistant. The new Shield TV includes SmartThings Hub technology, which allows you to link a wide range of smart devices. Shield TV can effectively act as the central control system for an entire connected home controlled by voice commands.
“We’re excited to be part of the new Shield TV, powered by the Android TV platform,” said Sascha Prueter, director of Android TV at Google. “When the Google Assistant comes to Android TV in the coming months, Shield users will be able to enjoy a hands-free Android TV experience through ‘Ok Google’ voice commands.”
Nvidia’s new Shield TV can manage a smart home, but it requires your voice input to execute tasks, which means you must be within earshot of the device’s microphone. That’s fine if you want to dim the lights in the room that you keep your Shield TV, but if you want to listen to music in another room, saying “OK, Google” isn’t going to do you much good. That is, unless you have a microphone system elsewhere in your home.
If the idea of having your own personal J. A. R. V. I. S. outweighs to potential Orwellian ramifications of having such a device in your home, you can pre-order one now. Nvidia is asking $200 for the base Shield TV device, which it intends to ship to customers later this month. The Spot AI microphone will be available later this year for $50.

Nvidia shows self-driving supercomputer at CES, names it Xavier

0

NewsHubNvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang holds up Xavier, a powerful computer designed to be the brains of self-driving cars.
Nvidia founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang used his keynote address during CES 2017 to show off a new computer, named Xavier, to enable self-driving cars , and to lay out how the company’s self-driving car platform works.
Backing up his product announcements, Huang went on to call out new partnerships to cement Nvidia’s place in the automotive industry.
«We would like to turn every car into an [artificial intelligence],» Huang said. To support that goal, he brought Scott Keogh, Audi of America’s president, out onto the stage to announce a partnership that promises highly-automated Audi vehicles by 2020. The term highly-automated usually means cars that can drive themselves under certain circumstances, like while on certain freeways.
Automakers, automotive equipment suppliers and technology companies have all been working on self-driving car research. The goals around self-driving involve reducing or eliminating car accidents, which caused more than 30,000 deaths on US roads last year; reducing traffic, which wastes fuel and people’s time; and enabling automated car sharing services, which could make it possible for many people to live without the expense of a car.
During his keynote, Huang said Nvidia has been developing self-driving technology for 10 years. Xavier will be a new generation of driving computer from Nvidia, following up on previous efforts. This computer would be the brains of a self-driving car, processing data from sensors, determining the car’s location from maps and making driving decisions.
Xavier, a system on a chip, uses an octa-core ARM64 processor and Nvidia’s new Volta graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture to do 30,000 TOPS (trillion operations per second). Nvidia emphasizes its GPU expertise as the basis for performing the environment assessment needed for self-driving cars. Huang pointed out that machine learning, essential for cars to recognize obstacles, advanced thanks to the GPU.
As an interstitial development towards self-driving cars, Huang described a new platform from Nvidia called AI Co-Pilot. This system consists of sensors to detect a car’s surroundings and cameras in the cabin to monitor the driver. This system gives a car many of the sensors and intelligence it would need for self-driving, but still relies on a human driver.
AI Co-Pilot would alert the driver of potential threats around their car, such as a fast-moving motorcycle. By tracking the driver’s gaze, it can also warn of another car in a direction in which they’re not looking.
One of the more remarkable capabilities of AI Co-Pilot is its ability to read lips, with what Huang claimed was 95 percent accuracy. Computer lip reading could make for far more accurate voice command.
For partnerships to bring this self-driving technology to production, Huang announced that Nvidia would be working with two digital mapmakers, Here and Zenrin. Here is a consortium owned by BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, while Zenrin builds digital maps of Japanese cities. Nvidia previously signed deals with Chinese mapmaker Baidu and TomTom.
ZF and Bosch are both large automotive equipment suppliers which will begin using Nvidia’s self-driving technology. ZF previously announced ZF ProAI, a self-driving platform using Nvidia technology, that it will offer to car and truck makers.
The Audi deal builds on previous partnerships between Nvidia and the German automaker. Audi has used Nvidia graphics chips to power its infotainment systems and instrument cluster displays.
Nvidia faces stiff competition in marketing its self-driving car technologies, but the automotive industry is likely to adopt self-driving rapidly over the next ten years, making for a great amount of opportunity.

NewsHubThe Asrock motherboard… damn, looks wicked!!
I am excited to see all these new motherboard. They look gorgeous.
Not a huge fan of all the unnecessary heatsinks and decorations which are only there for looks and don’t actually enhance the performance or reliability. Still it’s nice to see AMD feeling confident in aiming for the enthusiast or «gamer» market, where performance and the number of blue LEDs are crucial.
