Hangover Cure Showdown: Gatorade vs Pedialyte

0

NewsHubHow are you feeling today? A little groggy? Nauseous? Have you promised yourself that you’ll never drink again? If that sounds familiar, then you’re probably here hunting for hangover cures. Two popular folk remedies that pretend to have some scientific backing are Pedialyte and Gatorade. Let’s see if they actually work.
While just about everyone who has ever had a sip of alcohol has their own hangover cure, from “hair of the dog” to greasy foods , few recommendations are as common as chugging Gatorade or Pedialyte. The idea is simple: if drinking dehydrates you, then drinking a beverage designed to counter dehydration should make you feel better. Let’s take a quick look at both options:
Let’s take a closer look at both options to see if either can help you get over that pounding headache.
While we’re still not exactly certain what about alcohol causes hangovers specifically, we do know what happens in your body after the fact. After a night of drinking, the body releases acetaldehyde and cytokines , two causes for nausea or headaches. Your liver also gets overworked in an attempt to process all that alcohol. Dehydration is another effect of a hangover, which happens because alcohol is a diuretic and makes you pee more.
Gatorade and Pedialyte are supposedly a good cure for the dehydration portion of your hangover because they’re packed with electrolytes. Electrolytes help you retain more water and pee less, which is good for fast rehydration. Before we get there, let’s look at the nutrition numbers on both Gatorade and Pedialyte:
In theory, all these electrolytes should help with the headache part of your hangover, and since Pedialyte has more electrolytes, it sounds like better option. Dehydration is just one part of your hangover though, so curing that won’t “cure” your hangover as a whole. To that point, The Atlantic spoke with kidney doctor and medical school professor Stanley Goldfarb and Amy Hess-Fischl , nutrition specialist at the University of Chicago:
Regardless of how big of a role hydration plays in the power of a hangover, we know dehydration causes the brain to contract, and that could be one of the minor causes of your headache. The best counter to that is hydration, which is especially necessary if you’ve spent the night (or morning) throwing up.
There’s at least a theoretical grain of truth in the idea that both Pedialyte and Gatorade provide a slight hydration improvement over regular old water , in which case Pedialyte would theoretically outdo Gatorade.
While taste is subjective, there’s no denying that Gatorade wins out in the number of options available. Gatorade has 29 flavors of its “Thirst Quencher” drink. It also has eight low-calorie flavors , and four flavors of a powder mix you can add to water. You can find a 32oz Gatorade at a local convenience or grocery store for $1-$2, or get larger packs, like eight, 20oz bottles, for about $6.
Pedialyte comes in five main flavors: mixed fruit, strawberry, grape, bubble gum, and unflavored, though they all taste like lightly flavored chalk dust. Those same flavors also come in freezer pops and powder packs. One, 33.8oz container of Pedialyte retails for about $5. Pedialyte is also a bit harder to find than Gatorade and you’ll need to venture into a grocery store or pharmacy for a bottle instead of the local convenience store.
Gatorade is the cheaper, easier to find option of the two. Gatorade doesn’t have as many electrolytes per bottle as Pedialyte, but it’s so much cheaper. The number of flavor options means it’s more likely you’ll drink more Gatorade, which is all that matters. If money’s not an issue, just go with whichever you like the taste of more.
We don’t know if either Gatorade or Pedialyte is better than plain old water. We do know that hydration is one small factor of getting over a hangover, so drinking anything will help, but it won’t “cure” a hangover completely. Plus, water is much cheaper.
Drink whatever tastes good and whatever you can keep down in your sorry state. Better yet, create a time machine, go back to last night, and drink water in-between each alcoholic drink.

Ceuta: Afrikanische Migranten stürmen spanische Exklave

0

Erst
Anfang Dezember hatten 400 Menschen die Exklave gestürmt. Auch damals gab
es viele Verletzte. Die meisten der Eindringlinge konnten gefasst und
in das örtliche Auffangzentrum (Ceti) gebracht worden.
Spanien verfügt in Marokko zwei Exklaven: Ceuta
an der Meerenge von Gibraltar und das 250 Kilometer weiter östlich
gelegene Melilla. In der Nähe der Gebiete harren Zehntausende
notleidende Afrikaner sowie mittlerweile auch Syrer aus. Sie warten auf eine
Chance, in die EU zu gelangen.

Year of fear: Horror movies to look forward to in 2017

0

NewsHub«It» is back.
Scared about what 2017 might bring? Join the club.
That’s what’s so delicious about horror movies. For a couple of hours, viewers can forget about the very real terrors of war, disease, natural disasters and political division. On the screen, there might be zombies, vampires, aliens or sadistic murderers, but once the lights go up, they all disappear back into the projector. If only our real fears could be banished so easily.
Some familiar spooky faces are returning. Annabelle, the creepy doll, is back in «Annabelle 2. » Samara, of die-in-seven-days videotape fame, is still crawling out of TVs, this time flat-screens, in «Rings. » And Stephen King’s horror classic «It,» which reminded us all how much we hate clowns and sewers and especially clowns in sewers, is getting a new look.
Classic monster movies are more action movies than flat-out horror these days, but «The Mummy,» «War for the Planet of the Apes,» and «Kong: Skull Island» are sure to draw big audiences.
From the department of films with actual novel premises, audiences are eagerly awaiting «The Belko Experiment,» which takes the kill-your-friends concept of «The Hunger Games» and Japan’s «Battle Royale» and transforms it to an office environment. Maybe you always thought that one guy in accounting was annoying, but this is ridiculous. And speaking of office horror, there’s real promise in «A Cure for Wellness,» in which an employee is sent to bring the company’s CEO back from a mysterious spa in the Swiss Alps, where nothing is like it seems and leaving is not an option.
Not every eagerly anticipated horror film is covered in our photo gallery, because many haven’t released photos or trailers yet. But we’re still looking forward to the «Flatliners» sequel (September 29), a «Friday the 13th» reboot promising a Jason and his mother origin story (October 13—Friday, of course), and a third «Cloverfield» film, called «God Particle» (October 27)
Here’s a look at the scary cinema offerings looming on the fresh new calendar pages of 2017.

The Best New Year's Day : Powerbeats3, Elliptical, DualShock 4, and More

0

NewsHubA deeply discounted elliptical trainer , Beats with Apple’s new W1 chip , and a $40 DualShock 4 lead off the year’s best deals.
Bookmark Kinja Deals and follow us on Twitter to never miss a deal. Commerce Content is independent of Editorial and Advertising, and if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale. Click here to learn more.
Until relatively recently, USB-powered portable hard drives topped out at 2TB, but today on Amazon, you can get a 3TB WD My Passport Ultra for $100 , one of the best prices we’ve ever seen. Whether you’re storing photos, movies, or even entire games on your Xbox, the WD My Passport Ultra is one of the most popular drives on the market.
If you’re serious about photography, the full-frame Sony A7s II needs no introduction. If you aren’t serious about photography, you can go ahead and skip this blurb.
The powerful camera body has never seen significant cash discounts, but today, you can at least get a $300 Amazon gift card when you buy it. I suggest putting it towards extra lenses.
These deals may be a little out of season, but if you’re planning any wintertime tropical getaways, these inexpensive dry bags will keep your precious smartphone safe from surf and sand alike.
Beats sound quality has come a long way in recent years, and the new Powerbeats 3 even include Apple’s easy-pairing W1 chip , making them a great option for iPhone-owning fitness buffs, or anyone whose ears aren’t compatible with AirPods. They’re still only a few months old, but for a limited time, Amazon’s taking $50 off.
If your new year’s resolution is to get in better shape (I’m being rhetorical here; everyone’s resolution is to get in better shape), this discounted elliptical means you might actually do it. If you’ve got the space for it, $475’s a steal.
Once you have a soft close toilet seat , you’ll never go back. It’s a new year, treat yourself.
If you still haven’t upgraded your morning routine up a life-changing wake-up light, the new year is a great excuse to try one out .
The entry-level Philips HF3500 is currently marked down to $58 , down from its usual $70 (though not an all-time low). While there are higher end models with color-shifting light and multiple wake-up sounds, I’ve been a satisfied user of this model for two years, and can’t recommend it highly enough.
I swear, in a few years AmazonBasics will be making electric cars and pre-fab houses. In the meantime, they’ve started producing pop-up canopy tents, and you can pick one up for an all-time low $73 today , roughly $20-$30 less than you’d expect to pay for other brands.
You need to buy detergent, paper towels, and toilet paper anyway, so you may as well save $15 on it. Just spend $50 on select brands from Target , and use code CLEAN at checkout to get the discount.
Uniqlo was one of our readers’ favorite clothing brands of 2016, and you can save a bundle on hundreds of closeout styles during their Last Chance Sale. You’ll get free shipping on orders of $125 or more, or $5 flat rate otherwise.
When Sony rolled out the new PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, they also quietly tweaked the DualShock 4 controller, and here’s another chance to get it for $40 .
This is basically the same gamepad you know and love, but with a futuristic looking light bar at the top of the touchpad, and the ability to communicate over USB when plugged into your console for lag-free input.
You’re never going to believe this, but Amazon’s running a Kindle ebook sale. To kick off the new year, they’re discounting a handful of true literary classics that everyone should read at some point in their lives. A few standouts are below, but you should definitely head over to Amazon to see the full list.
If you need a fresh set of wiper blades to survive the winter, you can grab a pair of Bosch Insight wiper blades for $23 from Amazon today .
Just pick the two you need, add them to your cart , and the discount should appear automatically, assuming both were shipped and sold by Amazon.com. The deal even allows you to mix and match sizes, so you can almost certainly find a combination that will work for your car.
It turns out that Amazon makes their own bath mats, and you can pick one up in the color of your choice for just $10 today .
I know the year isn’t over, and nobody wants to think about dealing with taxes yet, but Amazon’s currently offering big discounts on TurboTax 2016 software packages .
This page has a handy comparison chart to help you choose the right version for you. And once you’ve decided, you’ll get your choice of a download or a disc.
Breville’s reader-favorite Smart Ovens almost never go on sale, but Amazon’s offering rare discounts today on two different models today, including an all-time low price on the Mini .
Update : The Mini deal is over, but the larger model is still available.
Unless you happen to own some other beautiful Breville products we recommend, it’ll almost certainly be the best-looking appliance in your kitchen. I got one of these as a wedding gift several months ago, and it’s every bit as good as advertised.
The Mini is just $100 , down from its usual $150, and the 800XL is also $50 off , down to $200. If you got some Amazon gift cards for the holidays, I can’t think of many more worthwhile things to spend them on.
Anker makes the best gadgets for keeping all of your new toys charged , and several of their most popular battery packs, chargers, and accessories are on sale today. There are too many deals to list here, but head over to this post for all of the products and promo codes.
iTunes gift card discounts are noticeably less common than they used to be, and while we do see 20% discounts from time to time, a $50 iTunes gift card for $43, is still a solid deal if you pay for apps, movies, Apple Music, iCloud storage, or Mario Run unlocks. Of course, it would also make a great gift for the iPhone user in your life.
If you need a way to fill your holiday downtime, Amazon will rent you any movie in their digital catalog for a buck today with promo code MOVIE99. That applies to holiday films, new releases (I’m renting Sully ), classics; if you can rent it on Amazon, you can rent it for $1.
Remember that after you place your order, you’ll have 30 days to start watching, and then 24 hours to finish it.

The space events you have to see to believe in 2017

0

NewsHub«Let me tell you why the Moon is an amazing place. It’s an amazing place, believe me. And we’re gonna go back there, to the Moon. » OK, so we’re probably not going to hear a JFK-style inspiring commitment from incoming President Trump about prioritising Moon bases or similar, but one thing is clear; the direction of space exploration is up for grabs. With a few milestone tests for SpaceX, 2017 is going to be a big year in the space industry, but there are plenty of landmark celestial events, too. The biggest one of all has to be the Great American Eclipse on August 21, when millions of people in the USA will drive north to witness two minutes of darkness in the day and a chance to gape in aw at the Sun’s icy white corona. Will Instagram survive?
There are reasons to believe that President Trump is keeping an ambitious space project under his Make America Great Again hat, possibly for his inauguration speech on Friday, January 20, 2017. If Trump – who will appoint a new NASA Administrator during 2017 – decides to commit to returning to the Moon, it will mean an about-turn at NASA, which has been on its #JourneyToMars for the last few years. Would that leave Mars to be privately colonised by Elon Musk’s SpaceX ?
They call it the Ring of Fire eclipse. A quirk of nature means that while the Sun is 400 times larger in diameter than the Moon, it’s also 400 times further away, so both Sun and Moon appear to be exactly the same size in the sky. Hence a New Moon can eclipse the Sun and turn day into night for a few minutes However, on Sunday 26 February, 2017 at 14:58 Universal Time (GMT), the Moon will be at the furthest point from the Earth in its elliptical orbit, so will cover most, but not all, of the Sun, creating a Ring of Fire eclipse.
Total darkness doesn’t occur during an annular eclipse, and solar safety eclipse glasses must be worn. Oh, and you’ll need to be in Patagonia, Argentina or Angola to see it. There was one last September across Africa.
Humans making low-Earth orbit their permanent home is perhaps the greatest achievement of our generation, but the International Space Station often gets overlooked. The end of March will see the first of four ISS crew lift-offs in 2017 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad in Kazakhstan. There are few better space spectacles than the launch of a Soyuz MS-04 rocket. You can watch it all live on NASA TV , or visit the Baikonur Cosmodrome – the world’s first and busiest cosmodrome – for a mere US$4,500. High-def TV of Earth from the ISS is frequently available, and if you want to see the ISS speed across the sky from your back yard, NASA’s Spot The Station service is on hand.
The giant planet swings into view this month as it reaches what astronomers call ‘opposition’. All that means is that Earth has orbited into a position exactly between the Sun and Jupiter, so the planet is at its brightest and best of the year. With a pair of binoculars is possible to study the fifth planet from the Sun and even see the largest of its moons – Europa, Ganymede, Callisto and Io – as pinpricks of light lining-up around Jupiter. That stunning site is even more impressive through any telescope; even a 4-inch ‘scope will reveal its iconic red stripes. NASA’s Juno probe is currently taking our closest-ever look.
While Jupiter is certainly a stunning site through binoculars or a telescope, perhaps the most amazing night sky object of all for amateur astronomers is the planet Saturn, which this month swings into opposition. Magnification is important here, but even in a cheap 4-inch or 6-inch telescope you’ll see the hallowed rings of Saturn with your own eyes. Seriously, this is one thing everyone should see once during their lifetime.
Time for fireballs! The Perseids meteor shower is the most prolific of the year, and the result of Earth busting through debris from a comet called Comet Swift-Tuttle, which passed through the solar system most recently in 1992. We’re talking about 50-100 or more meteors per hour, with big, bright, sparkling fireballs that often appear to leave a trail behind them. Instead of a fraction of a second, each shooting star can last a full second. The spectacle of seeing three bright meteors streak across the sky is price-less but demands patience, so avoid the temptation to check your smartphone, which will distract you and instantly kill your night vision. Between midnight and 2am, when the night sky is darkest, is the very best time.
They’re calling it Black Monday. For around two minutes on the morning of Monday, 21 August 2017, a narrow swath of the USA will go dark, as the Sun fully disappears behind the New Moon. This rare Total Solar Eclipse will be visible only from a narrow 70-mile band stretching from Oregon to South Carolina, known as the path of Totality. If you want to go, make your plans now. Just before totality, red spots pulse on the edge of the Moon, the last rays of sunlight pouring through the valleys of the Moon, before all sunlight is blocked. You then get to see the Sun as it really is, its bright star-white corona billowing in deep space like ribbons blowing in the wind. As Totality ends, the first rays of Sun cause a powerful one-second flash; the Diamond Ring, surely the most beautiful natural phenomenon of all. Will the internet survive the inevitable onslaught of #eclipselfies?
NASA’s reliance on Russian space agency Roscosmos for sending its astronauts into space, which charges US$81 million for a return ticket to the ISS on a Soyuz, will only end if either SpaceX or Boeing successfully test their crew capsules. While tests of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner have been delayed until 2018, SpaceX will launch an unmanned version of Crew Dragon during August 2017. The goal is a 14-day manned mission to the ISS in 2018. SpaceX will follow it up in September with the first-ever launch of its Falcon Heavy rocket, which is designed to go to Mars.
NASA’s Cassini probe at Saturn has made a play for humankind’s most-loved robot since it arrived at Saturn in 2004. It has discovered icy plumes on moon Enceladus, taken jaw-dropping images of Saturn , and its probe Huygens landed on the moon Titan where it discovered lakes of methane. All good things must come to and end, however, and after a year spent taking deep dives towards the planetary surface, Cassini will end its 12 year-long mission by crashing into the planet on September 15.
Supermoons are nerdy events, but the internet loves them. The Moon’s orbit around Earth is elliptical so sometimes it’s closer than usual; that’s all a Supermoon is. It looks slightly bigger than normal, but only by a few percent, so what’s the fuss? However, it is a great excuse to witness a bright orange moon-rise, which few people ever see. Get somewhere high – a couple of storeys up will do – and look directly east. Unless it’s cloudy, a bright orange Moon will appear on the horizon. It will look awesome because the rising Full Moon always looks awesome, but it will really only appear to be larger when it’s just above the horizon. The key time is sunset on December 3, 2017, for about 25 minutes.
If you miss it, just wait 28 days.

Growth in China's factories, services slows in December

0

NewsHubChina’s manufacturing sector expanded for a fifth month last month, but growth slowed a touch more than expected in a sign that government measures to rein in soaring asset prices are starting to have a knock-on effect on the broader economy. The official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) stood at 51.4 in December compared with 51.7 in November, data released on Sunday showed. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion on a monthly basis while one below 50 suggests a contraction. December’s reading was slightly below the forecast in a Reuters poll for 51.5. A housing boom in the second half of last year and a government spending spree on infrastructure have helped boost prices for commodities from cement to steel, giving the manufacturing sector a much-needed lift. But the government is cracking down on speculative property buying, and signals from policymakers that more will be done to contain asset bubbles and rising debt – even at the expense of slower growth – means extra stimulus measures could be limited. “Today’s PMI figures suggest that the change of policy tone has taken its toll, as the authorities are seriously concerned about the asset bubbles,” said Zhou Hao, senior economist at Commerzbank. Factory output slowed in December, with the sub-index hitting 53.3 compared with 53.9 the previous month. Total new orders were flat at 53.2, logging the same as in November, while new export orders fell to 50.1 from 50.3. Jobs were again lost, with the employment sub-index sitting at 48.9, compared to 49.2 in November, as the country pledged to cut excess capacity over a range of industries. A sub-index for smaller firms fell, and performance for larger companies also worsened. A separate reading on the services sector showed the pace of growth slowed in December, the latest data showed. The official non-manufacturing purchasing managers’ index stood at 54.5 in December, down from 54.7 in November, but above the 50-point mark. Beijing is counting on growth in services – which account for more than half of gross domestic product – to offset persistent softness in exports that is dragging on the economy. Private investment has also remained weak. But growth for 2016 still looks set to hit Beijing’s target of 6.5 to 7 per cent, after expanding 6.7 per cent for each of the first three quarters.

Thousands march in Hong Kong to protest bid to unseat lawmakers

0

NewsHubHONG KONG: Thousands of protesters, chanting «Sovereignty belongs to the people! » marched through Hong Kong on New Year’s Day to protest at the government’s legal bid to unseat pro-democracy lawmakers Nathan Law, Lau Siu-lai, Leung Kwok-hung, and Edward Yiu.
The four popularly elected legislators, who led the rally, were the latest targets of a government move which pro-democracy parties describe as a witch hunt.
It came after the city’s courts ousted two pro-independence lawmakers — Yau Wai-ching and Sixtus Leung — for failing to swear their oaths of office correctly, a move backed by Beijing.
The Hong Kong government now wants to bar the other four legislators for alleged breaches in their swearing-in ceremony and in their oaths of allegiance.
«We can see that under Hong Kong’s rule of law, the government, with its unlimited resources, will use legal procedures to bully leaders and representatives with fewer resources,» Joshua Wong, a prominent student leader, told AFP at the rally.
«This has shown that ‘One Country, Two Systems’ is a failure and we should use the 20th anniversary of the handover to reflect on our political situation. «
Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997 under a deal which gives it broad autonomy and preserves its freedoms and the rule of law for 50 years. But there are fears these freedoms are being eroded by Beijing.
«The four lawmakers are genuinely concerned about the future of Hong Kong to ensure that our core values will be maintained,» Peggy Ng, a retired civil servant, told AFP at the rally.
«Particularly, that our next generations will enjoy the freedoms that I have enjoyed before. «
Court proceedings against the four are scheduled to start in February.
Organisers of the march said 9,150 people attended, while police estimated an maximum attendance of 4,800.
A 1,200-strong pro-Beijing committee will elect Hong Kong’s next leader in March.
The current unpopular chief executive Leung Chun-ying has announced he will not seek re-election, citing family reasons.
Banners at the march caricatured the likely election candidates and highlighted their pro-establishment positions.
Sunday’s rally also sought to raise funds for the four lawmakers to fight the government’s challenge in court.
The two ousted pro-independence lawmakers separately announced last week they were making a final legal bid to overturn their exclusion from the legislature.

China's manufacturing expands for 5th consecutive month

0

NewsHubActivity at China’s factories slowed in December but still represented the fifth consecutive month of expansion in the latest sign that the world’s No. 2 economy is stabilizing.
The monthly purchasing managers’ index by the Chinese Federation of Logistics and Purchasing was 51.4 in December, the second highest level of 2016. The highest reading was November’s 51.7 — the first time the index had hit that level since July 2014.
December’s figure climbed from 49.7 a year earlier.
The index is based on a 100-point scale with the 50-point mark separating expansion from contraction.
China’s manufacturing sector picked up throughout the year following an uneasy start in an upbeat sign for the wider Chinese economy, which posted steady growth of 6.7 percent in the third quarter.
China’s economy has cooled gradually over the past six years as Beijing tries to pivot away from heavy reliance on export-based manufacturing and investment toward consumer spending.
However, the government has supported the manufacturing sector with stimulus measures aimed at shoring up growth, including heavier spending on public infrastructure projects.

Team of medical workers ran organ trafficking ring in China

0

NewsHubSixteen people, mostly medical workers, were convicted of involvement in an organ trafficking ring and sentenced to between two and five years in jail by a court in Shandong on Friday, mainland media reported. The ring performed illegal kidney transplants at various hospitals and clinics in Jinan, Taian and Feicheng cities since 2014, according to provincial news portal Iqilu.com. The report did not identify the hospitals involved or specify how many transplants had been performed before the ring was busted in May 2015. Instead, it said the trading spanned more than a dozen provinces and municipalities, including Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia and Chongqing. Citing the Lixia district court in Jinan, the report said the ring consisted of at least two doctors, one anaesthetist, a nurse, an assistant doctor and other paramedics. Using Tencent QQ and other social networking tools, they searched online for kidney sellers across the country, arranging for tests and matches between sellers and potential buyers. Patients were asked to pay between 400,000 to 600,000 yuan (HK$670,000), sometimes more, for each transplant, while sellers received about 40,000 yuan, according to the report. Surgeons and paramedics made 3,000 to 10,000 yuan per surgery and the bulk of the profit was split among five ringleaders.
