Washington's proud offense shut down by Tide in Peach Bowl

0

NewsHubWashington’s proud, high-scoring offense was no match for Alabama.
In a way, Huskies coach Chris Peterson could see it coming. The more he studied the Crimson Tide defense, the more he understood the challenge awaiting Washington on Saturday in a 24-7 Peach Bowl semifinal loss to No. 1 Alabama.
«We’ve studied every snap that they’ve had this year and the tape doesn’t lie when you watch that much tape,» Peterson said. «I mean, that’s as good a defense as there is out there in college football, and they played like it. »
Washington (12-2) was held to season-low totals in points and yards (194). It was only the second time this season, following a 26-13 loss to Southern California on Nov. 12, the Huskies were held below 31 points.
The Huskies averaged 44.5 points, the fourth-highest total in the nation, before being humbled by Alabama.
Washington’s offense opened strong, moving 64 yards on a touchdown drive capped by Jake Browning’s 16-yard pass to Dante Pettis .
Alabama (14-0) shut out the Huskies from there.
Despite its offensive struggles after the opening drive, Washington trailed only 10-7 late in the first half until Alabama’s Ryan Anderson 26-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Browning was trying to connect with Lavon Coleman when he had to force a pass before hit by blitzing linebacker Reuben Foster. Anderson moved in for the pick, and his touchdown return gave Alabama a 17-7 lead.
«My job is just to not make a bad play worse,» Browning said. «Just take a sack or launch it out of bounds. »
Browning completed 20 of 38 passes for only 150 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The touchdown pass was his 43rd of the season, tying the Pac-12 record set by Cal’s Jared Goff in 2015.
Browning acknowledged Alabama’s defense alters a normal game plan.
«It’s a good defense,» Browning said. «They can get in a quarterback’s head. I don’t think they did that necessarily but they make you get rid of the ball quickly. They have elite pass-rush guys. We did a pretty good job with that overall but you’ve got to make a couple more plays when you’re playing a good team like that. »
Alabama shut down Washington’s leading receiver, John Ross, who had only 28 yards on five catches. The speedy receiver’s longest catch was for only 9 yards.
Meanwhile, Washington’s running game disappeared.
«We just couldn’t get our run game started,» Ross said. «… It’s pretty frustrating. We know they have a good run defense, but we still wanted to run the ball. »
The Huskies managed only 44 yards rushing on 29 carries — an average of 1.5 yards.
«They kind of are what we thought they were, a really, really elite championship defense with real good players across the board,» Peterson said.
Peterson said his defense also played «really elite» — except for one play, a 68-yard scoring run by Alabama power back Bo Scarbrough.
«We didn’t tackle one time and their back made a great run and broke about five tackles,» Peterson said. «Other than that, I thought the kids played really good. »
Scarbrough, selected the game’s MVP, ran for 180 yards with two touchdowns.
Washington’s opportunistic defense led the nation in takeaways. But Alabama also won the turnover battle, 3-0. Two turnovers led to 10 points.
«They beat us with our own game,» Peterson said. «… When you’re playing this type of game, when the margin for error is that small, those things are going to show up. «

WNBA players in Istanbul 'accounted for, safe'

0

NewsHubA handful of WNBA players, including Essence Carson, Chelsea Gray and Jantel Lavender of the Los Angeles Sparks, were next door to a deadly shooting in a nightclub in Istanbul early Sunday morning.
The league later issued a statement that all WNBA players competing now in Istanbul «are accounted for and safe. » About two dozen WNBA players are in Turkey during their offseason playing in a league there.
An assailant believed to have been dressed in a Santa Claus costume opened fire at a nightclub in Istanbul during New Year’s celebrations, killing at least 39 people and wounding 69 others in what the province’s governor described as a terror attack. Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Sunday that of the victims identified so far, 16 were foreign nationals. He did not provide any information on their countries.
Carson had tweeted earlier in the evening that she was «stuck inside of the club because of ‘terror’ shooting in Istanbul. Praises to the most high. »
The incident occurred a week after the WNBA started offering to its players a phone application to help assist them in trying to stay safe while traveling overseas.
The league has partnered with LiveSafe, a safety communications platform, to provide a mobile security app to its 60-plus players competing in Russia, Turkey, China and other countries this offseason.
ESPN’s Melanie Jackson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The psychological secrets to successful resolutions

0

NewsHubAfter the excesses of the festive season, the thoughts of many turn to making resolutions to stop bad habits and take up healthier ones.
Unfortunately, quite a few fail.
But there are some psychological tactics which can be employed to increase the chances of success.
Psychologist Prof Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire, has carried out research into the key to sticking to resolutions.
In a study of 5,000 people who made resolutions, it was those with a «fatalistic attitude» who were less likely to succeed.
He advises it’s more than likely old habits will creep back in sometimes, so see those occasions as temporary set-backs and not a reason to give up altogether.
«Failure is the main thing that stops people If, on day one of their diet, they raid the biscuit tin, they think ‘that’s it’ and give up. But persistence is the key. Start again the next day. »
Support from friends and family can help people stick to their goals.
But Prof Wiseman says women might be more likely to benefit. «They are generally better at offering moral support. Men tend to try and encourage you to have more dessert. »
This can be something public like a blog — or the fridge door — or more privately, in a spreadsheet or a journal.
It might help to note down each gym visit, or decision not to have cake.
Prof Wiseman also advises having a checklist to show how life will be better once your goals are achieved — and allow small rewards throughout the process to keep up motivation levels.
It has to be something specific that can be realistically achieved.
Running a marathon, say, would be too much for a non-runner to aim for, while a vague desire to ‘get fit’ is hard to measure.
«Maybe start by saying you’ll go to the gym once a week, then you can look at moving up to two,» advises Prof Wiseman.
And be realistic — it’s best to choose one thing to focus on rather than having a raft of goals to increase the chances of success.
This is important in terms of knowing what prompts behaviour you want to avoid — and to help encourage healthier habits.
«It could be as simple as not having biscuits in the house so you’re not tempted — or understanding the stress triggers that make you reach for a cigarette,» Prof Wiseman says.
And he says it’s possible to create new triggers to prompt you in your new, healthier habits.
«You can decide that when the news starts, that’s the time when you set off for the gym».

Environment minister shot dead amid political turmoil in Burundi

0

NewsHubThe environment minister has been shot dead in Burundi, where political turmoil over the president’s extended term has led to political killings.
Emmanuel Niyonkuru was shot as he arrived home on Saturday night, police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.
Mr Nkurikiye said three people have been arrested including the minister’s watchman and his security detail.
In a tweet, President Pierre Nkurunziza confirmed the killing and said «this crime will not go unpunished».
Burundi has faced widespread international criticism over the deadly political turmoil that followed Mr Nkurunziza’s pursuit of a third term last year, which many in the country said was unconstitutional.
Hundreds of people have been killed in streets protests, an attempted coup, rebel attacks and seemingly tit-for-tat killing between Government and opposition supporters.

New UN chief urges New Year’s resolution: ‘Put Peace First’

0

NewsHubUNITED NATIONS (AP) — Antonio Guterres took the reins of the United Nations on New Year’s Day, promising to be a “bridge-builder” but facing an antagonistic incoming U. S. administration led by Donald Trump who thinks the world body’s 193 member states do nothing except talk and have a good time.
The former Portuguese prime minister and U. N. refugee chief told reporters after being sworn-in as secretary-general on Dec. 12 that he will engage all governments — “and, of course, also with the next government of the United States” — and show his willingness to cooperate on “the enormous challenges that we’ll be facing together.”
But Trump, with his “America First” agenda, has shown little interest in multilateralism, which Guterres says is “the cornerstone” of the United Nations.
So as Guterres begins his five-year term facing conflicts from Syria and Yemen to South Sudan and Libya and global crises from terrorism to climate change, U. S. support for the United Nations remains a question mark.
And it matters because the U. S. is a veto-wielding member of the U. N. Security Council and pays 22 percent of the U. N.’s regular budget and 25 percent of its peacekeeping budget.
Immediately after the United States allowed the Security Council to condemn Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Dec. 23 in a stunning rupture with past practice, Trump warned in a tweet: “As to the U. N., things will be different after Jan. 20th,” the day he takes office.
Trump followed up three days later with another tweet questioning its effectiveness. “The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!”
John Bolton, a conservative Republican and former U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, said in an interview with The Associated Press that Guterres would be well advised “especially given the incoming Trump administration” to follow the model of his predecessor, Ban Ki-moon, and do what member governments want.
If he tries to follow what Ban’s predecessor, Kofi Annan, did as secretary-general and try to be the world’s top diplomat and what some called “a secular pope,” Bolton said, “I think especially in the Trump administration, he would run into big trouble very quickly.”
Guterres has made clear that his top priority will be preventing crises and promoting peace.
In the first minute after taking over as U. N. chief on Sunday, Guterres issued an “Appeal for Peace.” He urged all people in the world to make a shared New Year’s resolution: “Let us resolve to put peace first.”
“Let us make 2017 a year in which we all — citizens, governments, leaders — strive to overcome our differences,” the new secretary-general said.
He has said there is enormous difficulty in solving conflicts, a lack of “capacity” in the international community to prevent conflicts, and the need to develop “the diplomacy for peace,” which he plans to focus on.
Guterres has said he will also strive to deal with the inequalities that globalization and technological progress have helped deepen, creating joblessness and despair especially among youth.
“Today’s paradox is that despite greater connectivity, societies are becoming more fragmented. More and more people live within their own bubbles, unable to appreciate their links with the whole human family,” he said after his swearing-in.
Guterres said the values enshrined in the U. N. Charter that should define the world that today’s children inherit — peace, justice, respect, human rights, tolerance and solidarity — are threatened, “most often by fear.”
“Our duty to the peoples we serve is to work together to move from fear of each other, to trust in each other, trust in the values that bind us, and trust in the institutions that serve and protect us,” he said. “My contribution to the United Nations will be aimed at inspiring that trust.”
Guterres won the U. N.’s top job after receiving high marks from almost every diplomat for his performance in the first-ever question-and-answer sessions in the General Assembly for the 13 candidates vying to replace Ban, whose second five-year term ends at midnight on Dec. 31.
In an interview during his campaign with three journalists, Guterres said the role of secretary-general should be “an honest broker, a consensus builder” who engages as much as possible, in many circumstances discreetly.
“It’s not just to have a personal agenda, because it would be regrettable or ineffective, or to appear in the limelight. No. On the contrary, it’s to act with humility to try to create the conditions for member states that are the crucial actors in any process to be able to come together and to overcome their differences,” he said.
Whether the Trump administration will join Guterres and U. N. efforts to tackle what he sees as “a multiplication of new conflicts” and the myriad problems on the global agenda remains to be seen.
Trump’s choice as U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley who is the governor of South Carolina, has a reputation as a conciliator, which could be very useful especially in dealing with the Security Council and the four other permanent veto-wielding members — Russia, China, Britain and France, all of whom have their own national agendas.
But she will be taking instructions from the president.
Richard Grenell, who served as U. S. spokesman at the U. N. during President George W. Bush’s administration and has been working with Trump’s transition team, downplayed the prospect that Trump will withdraw from or even disregard the United Nations.
He said in an AP interview earlier this month that Trump is talking about reforming the U. N. and other international organizations so “they live up to their ideals.”
Guterres also wants to reform the United Nations to make it “nimble, efficient and effective.” He said “it must focus more on delivery and less on process, more on people and less on bureaucracy,” and ensure that the more than 85,000 U. N. staff working in 180 countries are being used effectively.

New Year Acton pub fire: Revellers flee Aeronaut blaze

0

NewsHubNew Year revellers had to flee from a pub before it was gutted by a fire that started just 30 minutes into 2017.
Partygoers enjoying a «Circus Spectacular» event had to be evacuated from the Aeronaut in Acton, west London, when the fire broke out.
London Fire Brigade said it rescued six people from a first-floor flat above the pub in Acton High Street.
It said half the ground floor was alight and the upper two floors of the building had been gutted.
The neighbouring Acton police station was also evacuated. Scotland Yard said three officers who had rushed to help were being treated after inhaling smoke.
The pub’s website listed a line-up of acts for its New Year event that included musicians, comedians, acrobats and a fire performer.
Musician Matt Blair said he was rescued from the roof of the building after his performance with double-act Rayguns Look Real Enough.
He tweeted : «We’re fine but 2017 has already got off to a bad start. One of our favourite venues that we just played burned down. Everyone is fine.
«We were upstairs, had to get on a roof area and luckily found a ladder we could climb down. Scary stuff.
«It was pretty scary and shocking. Physically we’re all fine. Just a bit shocked and sad. »
The Metropolitan Police said the cause was not believed to be suspicious while the fire brigade said it was unknown.
At 04:48 GMT, the fire service tweeted that the blaze was under control.

Mariah Carey Ends 2016 With New Year’s Eve Live Performance Disaster (Video)

0

NewsHubPerhaps no one is more ready for 2017 than Mariah Carey.
The pop music diva didn’t exactly shine Saturday night during her final 2016 live TV performance. On ABC’s “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve,” the headliner suffered an audio equipment malfunction, which resulted in one of the more awkward television moments of a year many would like to forget. Apparently, the singer could not hear herself — or possibly anything — in the on-stage monitors. The rest of the world could sure hear the music and backing track for her hit single, “Emotions,” however — including all those pre-recorded high notes.
While Carey’s back-up dancers kept doing their thing, the vocalist pretty much walked around the stage, repeatedly asking a technician to turn her speakers on. At one point she told the crowd, “I’m trying to be a good sport here.”

The 46-year-old invited those in midtown Manhattan to do the singing for her, concluding, “This was … amazing.”

If we look at the performance in purely existential terms, it may serve as an appropriate send-off to a year that ended on quite a few low notes. Or, in this case, low notes that were then spoken over in frustration until the bitter end. Here’s the grand finale:

Trump Remembers ‘Enemies’ In New Year’s Eve Tweet

0

NewsHubPresident-elect Donald Trump made sure not to forget his enemies in a tweet wishing everyone a happy New Year’s Eve.
Trump tweeted Saturday morning: “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!”
Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 31, 2016
Trump had much to reflect upon on the last day of 2016 as his enemies in both the Democratic and Republican parties first predicted he wouldn’t be able to secure the presidential nomination.
No presidential candidate has ever relied so heavily on social media to relay messages to supporters and voters, and Trump has continued to utilize Twitter on a regular basis as president-elect to comment on the news of the day.
Despite suggestions that Trump refrain from or reduce his use of social media as president, his incoming press secretary, Sean Spicer, has already indicated that Trump will continue to conduct social media business as usual after his inauguration.
Spicer said Trump will use “various outlets to continue the conversation .”
“Look, I get it, we’re not going to win a battle whether The New York Times is going to ever give us a fair shake or not,” Spicer said. “But we recognize that there’s, you know, a few thousand readers or so left that still look at The New York Times, and so it’s worth, probably, talking to them,” Spicer said.
