Super Bowl: Audi's Daughter ad divides viewers

0

NewsHubAn advert for Audi which aired during Sunday’s Super Bowl in the US has garnered both praise and fury for the German car manufacturer.
Daughter shows a girl racing against boys in a soapbox derby while her father, voiced by actor George Clooney, asks: «What do I tell my daughter? Do I tell her grandpa is worth more than her grandma? That her dad is worth more than her mom? Do I tell her that despite her education, her drive, her skills, her intelligence, she will automatically be valued as less than every man she meets? »
The girl then wins the race, and the father concludes: «Or maybe I’ll be able to tell her something different. »
The advert ends with the tagline: «Progress is for everyone. »

The Audi of America website expands on the campaign, citing a US Joint Economic Committee report from April 2016 which found that on average American women are paid 21% less than men. «So at Audi of America, we are standing up alongside every other organization that supports this important cause,» the website says.
While many viewers applauded the ad, there has also been considerable backlash. On YouTube, where it was first published on 1 February, dislikes currently outnumber likes by more than 12,000.
«Tell your daughter to work for what she wants… Not beg for special treatment because she’s a woman,» says one viewer.
«Propaganda. Absolutely disgusting,» simply says another.

Lisa Granatstein, editor at Adweek, said that although there have been female empowerment ad campaigns during the Super Bowl before — including last year’s Like a Girl campaign for Always — Audi’s is «one step forward» by taking on a specific issue like the pay gap which has become «part of the national conversation».
Ms Granatstein said she thought Daughter was «a very bold stand in terms of celebrating and campaigning for pay equity which has become a big issue in this country. »
As for the backlash, she felt this was partly due to «the tone that it was implied that men did not value women equally».
«Every time an advertiser steps into a political fray they risk some backlash. »
But she said that Audi will be well aware that almost half of Super Bowl viewers are women and «women are decision makers, they are buying cars themselves, and why not support them? »
Wesley Hartman, professor of marketing at Stanford University, said that the ad was a strategic move.
«In tackling the gender pay gap it is looking to broaden its consumer base and tackle its corporate responsibility. The image of Audi is pretty irresponsible right now with the Volkswagen emission controversy and this is a way to improve their corporate image in a way that is unconnected. »
But he said he felt the Super Bowl «is not necessarily the right venue to be political — with such a wide viewership of all political leanings it is not surprising to get a fight back».
Commentators pointed out that this year’s Super Bowl ads were especially political, including emphases on diversity and immigration. An advert by holiday rental company Airbnb showed people of different races and said: «We believe no matter who you are, where you’re from, who you love or who you worship, we all belong,» the advert said. «The world is more beautiful the more you accept. »
And a building materials supplier, 84 Lumber, showed the journey made by a family from Central America to the US, the longer online version of which shows them arriving at a huge wall, only to find someone had built a door into it.
There was also plenty of support for the ad.
«I love this ad. How could anyone not want their daughter, mother or wife to be treated equally? Thanks Audi,» said @ChristinaDay99.
«Really happy to own an Audi, especially after seeing this,» tweeted @Justineplays.
But several viewers also pointed out that despite Audi’s professed ambitions for gender equality, only two of the people on its 14-member US executive board are women.
Audi responded by saying: «Twelve percent of senior management at Audi of America are women. We have pledged to put aggressive hiring and development strategies in place to increase the number of women in our workforce, at all levels, and will work aggressively towards that goal. «

Trump’s latest comment on Putin isn’t just shocking, it’s anti-American

0

NewsHubManuel Balce Ceneta / AP
President Donald Trump salutes a Marines honor guard as he disembarks from Marine One upon arrival at the White House in Washington, Monday, Feb. 6, 2017 from a trip to Florida.
Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017 | 2 a.m.
By now, it’s takes a lot for a remark from President Donald Trump to be considered shocking.
But Trump hit that level with his comment to Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly about Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview released Sunday.
The comment came during an exchange that started with O’Reilly asking Trump if he respected Putin. Trump said he did, which led to O’Reilly asking him how he could feel that way about “a killer.”
“You got a lot of killers,” Trump said. “You think our country is so innocent?”
Astonishing. That’s the same argument that Russia and other nations that have been hostile to the U. S. — Iran and Libya among them — have used against us. Now Trump trots it out, apparently comparing Russia’s actions to ours while aligning himself with Russian secret police and Middle Eastern extremists who have been saying the same thing for years. Retired four-star Gen. Barry McCaffrey called it perhaps the most anti-American statement ever by a president, and he’s right.
As Republican Sen. Marco Rubio pointed out in a tweet, it’s particularly offensive considering that Putin has long been suspected of involvement in the poisoning of his political enemy Viktor Yushchenko, a president of Ukraine.
“When has a Democratic political activist been poisoned by the GOP, or vice versa? We are not the same as #Putin,” Rubio tweeted.
True, and Rubio only scratched the surface. The list of Putin enemies who are dead or missing is a long one that includes: Russian press minister Mikhail Lesin, who died of blunt force trauma to the head; Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB agent who died after drinking tea that had been laced with deadly polonium-210; journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was shot point blank in the head after writing a book critical of Putin; Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister of Russia under Boris Yeltsin who was shot four times in the back after accusing Putin of being paid off by oligarchs; and Paul Klebnikov, the chief editor of the Russian edition of Forbes, who was killed in a drive-by shooting after investigating wealthy Russians and exposing corruption.
The list goes on.
No wonder Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., also distanced himself from Trump on the matter.
“Putin’s a former KGB agent. He’s a thug,” McConnell said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “He was not elected in a way that most people would consider a credible election. The Russians annexed Crimea, invaded Ukraine and messed around in our elections. And no, I don’t think there’s any equivalency between the way the Russians conduct themselves and the way the United States does. »
Well, maybe that used to be the case before Trump became the president. Alarmingly, we now apparently do have something in common with Russia — our president feels free to vilify and discredit our government.
It all begs a question: Which side is our president on?

Why dealmaker Trump won’t get one up on Abe’s yen policy

0

NewsHubDonald Trump ‘s accusation that Japan manipulates its currency doesn’t appear likely to play into any negotiation leverage as the president meets with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe this week.
Trump’s accusation was unexpected.
«Every other country lives on devaluation,» Trump said late last month, according to multiple media reports. «You look at what China’s doing, you look at what Japan has done over the years. … They play the money market, they play the devaluation market and we sit there like a bunch of dummies. »
It is unclear what Trump meant by «devaluation market. »
The yen has dropped sharply since Trump’s surprise election, with the dollar fetching more than 118 yen earlier this year, compared with levels around 102 yen before the vote. But analysts generally attribute the move to a sudden surge in the dollar amid expectations inflation would rise and spur the U. S. Federal Reserve to hike interest rates further.
Japanese policymakers quickly pushed back against the accusation, noting the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) policy, which includes a massive quantitative easing program, was aimed at spurring inflation and economic growth, not at weakening the yen.
Many analysts found the accusation against Japan unwarranted.
«Where’s he been, this guy,» asked Edwin Merner, president at Atlantis Investment Research, based in Japan. Merner noted that the accusation appeared recycled from headlines more than 20 years ago. «This is crazy talk. »
But the Trump comments have spurred the expectation that discussions over the yen would be on the table when the president and Abe meet Feb. 10-11, both at the White House and at the U. S. president’s country club in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, a mix of a private club owned by the Trump Organization and a separate private residence. The White House did not immediately return an email requesting information on the financial arrangements for the meeting.
The visit comes as relations between the U. S. and its long-running ally Japan may have already taken a chill after Trump pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.
But whether Trump’s comments were in earnest, were just a talking point or were meant as a negotiating tool, attempts to force Japan to change its monetary policy don’t appear likely to bear much fruit, analyst said.
«The Abe administration is unlikely in our view to be able to accept any deal that constrains the BOJ’s monetary policy or foreign-exchange movement driven by fundamentals,» analysts at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch said in a note on Monday.
They expected any such deal would destabilize Abe’s administration as it would be seen negatively by his supporters and as the Japanese economy wasn’t strong enough to take an exchange-rate shock.
«Agreeing to a deal that constrains the BOJ policy or foreign-exchange rate could be seen as a major concession on Japan’s sovereignty for the benefit of the U. S.,» the note said. «Allowing the yen to strengthen and causing the BOJ to tighten policy undermines Japan’s reflation efforts. »
More to the point: «If the Trump administration still insists on a tough currency deal, which is not our main scenario, we believe Abe is more likely to confront than concede,» the note said.
That doesn’t mean that Abe will put nothing on the table, however.
Japan was preparing a package that it said could generate hundreds of thousands of jobs in the U. S., according to government sources familiar with the plans, Reuters reported last week.
The plan was expected to include investments in infrastructure projects, including high-speed railways, the report said. It wasn’t clear how long these plans have been in the works as Japan Inc. has been seeking overseas infrastructure investments for many years.
Other analysts don’t expect Abe to bring too much of a package to the meeting.
«We think it could also be difficult for the Abe administration, which has thus far tried to promote more active domestic investment as part of its growth strategies, to shift gears and push Japanese companies to make further inroads into U. S. business,» Nomura said in a note last week.
The bank said it expected the Japanese government was likely most concerned with avoiding being saddled with protectionist demands at the summit.
«A particularly troubling scenario would be one in which Japan faces strong pressure to reduce its trade surplus with the U. S., while the BOJ’s monetary policy is simultaneously sharply criticized as being designed to devalue the yen,» it said.
But Nomura added that it saw little that Japan could realistically do to reduce its trade surplus.
It noted that while the Trump administration appeared to be particularly targeting autos. While autos are a key Japanese export to the U. S., few U. S.-made cars are sold in Japan.
While that may make for headlines that appeal to protectionist sentiment in the U. S., Nomura noted that Japan has already reduced tariffs on U. S. auto imports to zero.
To be sure, at least one analyst believes Japan’s monetary policy should be considered currency manipulation.
«In our view, the accusation is essentially valid,» Takuji Okubo, chief economist at Japan Macro Advisors, said in a note last week.
«Japanese policy makers have been guiding, if not manipulating, the yen lower in the last four years. »
Okubo noted that taking measures to tamp down the yen was one of Abe’s campaign promises in 2012.
«While it is true that Japan has not directly intervened in the foreign exchange rate market, Japanese government officials clearly prefer weaker yen, say so explicitly from time to time and they have taken measures they know would influence the yen to weaken,» he said.
Okubo noted that the BOJ’s policy to weaken the yen was defensible back in 2012, when the yen was at nosebleed levels of a mere 80 to the U. S. dollar, but he added that continuing to guide the yen lower looked like a «beggar thy neighbour» currency policy to make Japan’s exports more attractive.
«In our view, the Trump administration is quite canny to set its eyes on the yen. The threat to put an upward pressure on yen will prove to be a valuable bargaining chip to force Japan to open its domestic market to U. S. exports, such as agricultural products and service sectors,» he said.

What Apple’s new connector standard could mean for iPhone headphones

0

NewsHubApple has an obsession with connectors. It loves Lightning cables, hates 3.5mm auxiliary audio jacks and has removed everything that’s not a USB-C connection from its latest 12-inch MacBook .
It’s so obsessed, apparently, that it has its eye on an 8-pin connector called the Ultra Accessory Connector, or UAC for short. Apple recently included the specification for the new connector type for iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices in its Made-for-iPhone (MFi) licensing program in hopes to get the world ready for a possible switch.
The connector, which some electronics like Nikon cameras have been using for years, is smaller than USB-C at 2.05mm by 4.85mm, and its purpose is to reduce the space needed for connectors on the next generation of third-party devices. Sources close to the matter told 9to5Mac that the connector could replace Lightning and USB-C connections altogether – though the jury’s out if that’s what will actually happen.
In practice, what’s more likely to happen is you might buy a pair of headphones that have a UAC port that then connects to the Lightning port on your phone, or vice-versa. In that sense UAC might help to resolve the USB-C, Lightning Port, 3.5mm jack dilemma by introducing a dongle to iOS devices that can do all three. To that end, the sources tell 9to5Mac that Apple will allow third-party manufacturers to make Lightning to UAC, USB-A to UAC, and 3.5mm headset jacks to UAC cables – letting headphones with the new connection type work with a variety of Apple devices.
Now, there’s no doubt that there’s some real, practical purpose here – a new connector that saves space and connects to any number of next-gen devices sounds like a good thing – but for the most part this is probably going to alarm and upset a large group of consumers, most of whom haven’t gotten over Apple’s decision to remove the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhone 7 .
For now at least, it seems like Apple’s focus for UAC devices is headphones designed as part of the official Made-for-iPhone (MFi) licensing program and hasn’t mentioned using the standard across the board for all peripherals moving forward. Then again, the Lightning connector was just a spec at one time, too, and now it’s the only connection on iPhone.
Because most of the information we have so far about UAC comes from anonymous sources and not from Apple directly, the best thing to do now is watch and wait.
But should Apple allow third-party manufacturers to press on full steam with the adoption of yet another cable standard, the best course of action would be to buy wireless headphones from here on out – Bluetooth, thankfully, is fairly ubiquitous right now.
The other option is to go in the other direction and buy into the Lightning-connected ecosystem Apple has created that includes headsets like the upcoming Beats X earbuds.
The third viable option, of course, is buying Android devices instead.
