AWS has launched a «free training and job placement programme for the UK» to benefit around 1,000 «young adults as well as veterans, reservists and their spouses».
The scheme was launched today in London, with Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Karen Bradley citing the «the ability to connect in this way» being absolutely vital to a 12.6 per cent of adults who lack «basic digital skills to function in society».
«We need to make sure we»re ahead of the curve,» Bradley continued, echoing an AWS’ representative’s earlier sentiments that «if the Monopoly board was designed today, its utilities would include cloud computing».
«It’s fantastic [the scheme is] going to give young people the opportunity to get those skills, but also veterans. »
The Ministry of Defence, The Prince’s Trust and QA Consulting as well as other organisations — including ARM — who AWS counts as part of its «AWS Partner Network».
Outgoing MoD CIO Mike Stone was on hand to add words of support:
Information is the lifeblood of operations in any organisation, and it’s partouclalty apt for the military, where we do operations out in the field, as well as in business,» said Stone.
«If we’re going to get the most of that, we need to deliver efficiency along a force multiplier. To do that, we need to embrace mobility and the cloud, and the cloud is the force that’s gloing to allow us to do that.
«We also need skills, but also the major advantage of cloud providers in the UK, and to deliver it in a secure way. It»s the delivery of hybrid cloud services in a secure way that’s allowed us to power forward. We need people who are more digitally native, and I’m bringing in more and more apprentices — and my goodness can they do amazing things in a short amount of time. »
Stone said it’s not just military and civilians who work in the civil service, but also reservists.
«And we have to make use of skills right across the board. We’re undoubtedly going to have shortages of key skills, and we need to reach out for them. «

For the uninitiated, Nokia used to be a big name in smartphones in the years just before the iPhone arrived on the scene. It sold phones and tablet-like devices running Symbian, Maemo, and other platforms that have since bitten the dust. These devices were hugely popular for the time, though. The brand may be on track to return to its glory days, or at least try. After announcing a China-only Android phone recently, Nokia and hardware partner HMD Global are teasing another reveal for February 26th.
The Nokia that exists now is essentially what was left after Microsoft acquired the company’s mobile device business. That slice of Nokia was consumed by Microsoft, which then proceeded to bungle its smartphone ambitions. Several rounds of layoffs later, Microsoft has scaled back its mobile device business. One has to wonder what would have happened if Nokia had gone with Android instead of becoming a Windows Phone partner. The company is sort of getting a do-over now.
The first device from Nokia and HMD is the Nokia 6 (above), which is only for China. Nokia says on its official Facebook page that fans can look forward to “more announcements” on February 26th. But what could that be? HMD Global is a Finnish company founded with the express purpose of designing the hardware for Nokia-branded phones. So, we can expect hardware unique to Nokia — not a white-label Chinese devices that just has Nokia’s name slapped on it, which has been the case for some past devices.
The Nokia 6 could provide some fuel for speculation. That phone is powered by a Snapdragon 430 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The hardware is midrange — the ARM chip is from 2015, for example. It’s not a flagship phone, or even a budget flagship a la the OnePlus 3T. It wouldn’t make sense to announce the Nokia 6 as a China-only device, then announce the same device for everyone else a month later. The only difference would be LTE bands and a Google-supported build of Android. Thus, I think Nokia’s announcement will feature more up-scale hardware for Europe and possibly North America. I would not, however, expect anything intended to compete with the Galaxy S7 or Google Pixel.
The February 26th date lines up with the start of Mobile World Congress, one of the biggest mobile tech shows of the year. It’s a good chance for Nokia to get attention for a phone it intends to sell more widely. It remains to be seen if Nokia and HMD can recreate the old Nokia’s lightning in a bottle.

Although there have been some updates to Android Wear since its launch in 2014, a full version number is finally arriving for smartwatch owners bringing with it some cool new features. Google is calling it «the most significant Android Wear update since its launch. »

Google delayed the Android Wear 2.0 release date to 2017 but now we know that it will start to arrive ‘ early February ‘. This information was supposedly sent out to developers in an email as published on Google+.
However, you can get a developer preview already if you wish. It’s available for the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition and the Huawei Watch.
We saw one of the first devices to ship with Android Wear 2.0 at CES 2017 in the form of the Casio WSD-F20 .
«Based on what we’ve learned from users and developers, we’re evolving the platform to improve key experiences on the watch, including watch faces, messaging, and fitness,» said Google.
Overall, there’s a trends towards the Android Wear smartwatch being a device in its own right, with less reliance on a smartphone for it to function fully and usefully. Let’s look more specifically at the new features which will arrive with Android Wear 2.0, though.

Apps on Android Wear 2.0 can access the internet directly over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular meaning that it doesn’t need your phone to be close or even switched on to fully function. Apps can also receive push messages via Google Cloud Messaging.
Of course, early Android Wear watched didn’t come with Wi-Fi, let alone LTE connectivity, so this will be more of a big deal with newer devices.
A redesigned user interface for Android Wear 2.0 begins with a darker colour palette. Bigger changes include a new notification design and a new app launcher which takes note of the fact most Android Wear smartwatches use a round screen.
New notifications will be less intrusive and the darker colours will help save battery life. Google has also added Material Design for wearables which will make everything look more consistent and prettier alongside the rest of the Android ecosystem.
It’s part of the UI but warrants its own section as the new complications API will make the watch faces on Android Wear much better. In simple terms it means you can add widgets to any of your watch faces to display the information that’s most important to you – whether it’s your step count or info on your precious stocks. Tapping the widgets will take to directly to the app it’s linked to as well.
Although you can use your voice to dictate, you might not always want to read your message or search query out loud. With Android Wear 2.0 you’ll be able to either use handwriting recognition – the screen scrolls along as you write each letter with your finger – or you can use an actual keyboard on the screen which includes next work suggestions and swipe input. How well this will work on watches like the Moto 360 which have a ‘flat tyre’ at the bottom is unclear.
