Here’s how to pre-order the Nintendo Switch

0

NewsHubIf you were staying up late to ride the hype train that is the Nintendo Switch only to find yourself hunting aimlessly for a pre-order button…. good news.
Nintendo was weirdly vague about when US pre-orders for their new $300 console would open up (outside of a tweet that mentioned a limited number of pre-orders at Nintendo NYC) but a bunch of retailers just pushed their pages live.
Here are the sites that seem to be up and running and, as of 12:25 am Pacific, are still accepting pre-orders
Amazon
Target
Best Buy
Gamestop (Update: Gamestop seems to be tapped out as of 12:32 am Pacific, but they might add more stock)
Meanwhile, Walmart seems to keep running “out of stock” and then suddenly getting another batch — so if all other options fail, check there too.

New JVM language stands apart from Scala, Clojure

0

NewsHubAnother JVM language, Haskell dialect Eta , has arrived on the scene, again centering on functional programming.
Intended for building scalable systems, Eta is a strongly typed functional language. It’s similar to Scala , a JVM language that also emphasizes functional programming and scalability, and Clojure, another a functional language on the JVM.
But Eta sets itself apart from such competitors because it’s immutable by default, it uses lazy evaluation, and it has a very powerful type system, said Eta founder Rahul Muttineni, CTO at TypeLead, which oversees the language. This combination allows static guarantees and conciseness simply not possible in Scala or Clojure.
Currently at version 0.0.5 in an alpha release, Eta is interoperable with Java, allowing reuse of Java libraries in Eta projects and use of Eta modules in Java. Strong type safety enables developers to tell the compiler more information about code, while immutability in Eta boosts concurrency.
Eta also features purity, in which calling a function with the same arguments yields the same results each time; function definitions are treated as equations and substitutions can be performed like in math. Eta proponents said this makes it easier to understand code and prevents a lot of bugs typical in imperative languages. «Purity allows you to treat your code like equations in mathematics and makes it a lot easier to reason about your code, especially in concurrency and parallelism settings,» Muttineni said.
Eta is «lazy by default,» meaning data stays in an unevaluated state until a function needs to see inside. This lets developers program without having to be concerned about whether they have done more computation than was required. Developers also can write multipass algorithms in a single pass. «Laziness allows you to stop worrying about the order in which you write your statements,» said Muttineni. «Just specify the data dependencies by defining expressions and their relationships to each other, and the compiler will execute them in the right order and only if the expressions are needed. »
Plans call for fitting Eta with a concurrent runtime, an interactive REPL, metaprogramming, massive parallelism, and transactional concurrency. Support for the Maven build manager and a core library are in development as well, along with boilerplate generation for Java Foreign Function Interface imports.

The NSA can now share unfiltered surveillance data with other intelligence agencies

0

NewsHubBarely a week before he leaves office, U. S. President Barack Obama’s administration has authorized controversial new legislation that grants America’s 16 intelligence organizations access to raw communications data from the NSA’s surveillance efforts.
The New York Times reported that on January 3 Attorney General Loretta Lynch signed new regulations that permit the 16 divisions — which include the army, navy, coastguard, CIA and FBI — access to “raw signals intelligence information.” In the past, information passed on by the NSA was filtered so that an agency would only receive information deemed relevant to their request for data. Now, they will gain access to the full content stash brought in by the NSA’s surveillance dragnet, assuming that their request is accepted.
Analysts can later apply filters to focus on the more pertinent data, but the government has enacted this change to give its analysts access to more atoms of data. The idea being that they may find useful information that they would otherwise not have gotten.
The legislation marks a major step back for the privacy of American people, millions of whose phone, email and other communications records are picked up by the NSA as so-called ‘incidental data.’ Those raw details can now be perused by 16 further intelligence divisions beyond the NSA, all without a warrant.
Consider this point from the EFF :
In the wake of the Snowden disclosures, President Obama enacted reform that applied some limits to the NSA’s activities — including restrictions on data capture for non-US citizens and rules for storing incidental data — but this revelation marks a step back on any efforts to address the privacy of individuals. That’s particularly troubling given the uncertainty around how Obama’s successor, President Elect Donald Trump, will utilize America’s intelligence apparatus.

‘Couldn’t save them:’ 6 kids die in Baltimore house fire

0

NewsHubBALTIMORE (AP) — Robert Spencer said he often saw children playing on the porch of the home across the street from his in their northeast Baltimore neighborhood. When he looked out the window early Thursday morning, the home was in flames.
Spencer ran toward the fire, but it was so big and hot he couldn’t help them. Six of the family’s nine children were killed, while their mother and three of her other children were able to escape but were injured, a fire official said.
“I heard the kids crying. My daughter heard them. They said: ‘Help, help,’ and you know, couldn’t save them, couldn’t save them,” Spencer said. “There was just too much fire there.”
All six bodies were recovered from the home Thursday, fire department spokesman Chief Roman Clark said.
Clark said the children killed were two boys, ages 9 months and 2 years; 3-year-old twin girls; and two girls, ages 10 and 11.
Investigators are searching for clues about what caused the fire.
Firefighters encountered heavy flames coming from all three floors of the home when they answered the call about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, and they attacked the blaze from outside, Clark said. The third floor collapsed and the second floor partially collapsed. The fire was so hot that it melted parts of a car that had been parked in front of the house.
The children’s mother and two boys, ages 4 and 5, were in critical condition Thursday at a hospital. Clark said an 8-year-old girl who helped rescue her younger brothers was in “good shape.”
William Malone said all nine are his children with Katie Malone, who’s a staff member for Rep. Elijah Cummings’ district office.
William Malone told The Associated Press he wasn’t home at the time of the fire because he was at work for a restaurant. He said one of the three children taken to the hospital after the blaze has since been released.
“I’m still in shock to be honest,” said Malone, who was reached by phone at a relative’s home. He said he doesn’t know what may have caused the fire. Clark said William Malone told him he had recently changed the batteries in a smoke detector in the house.
Cummings said Katie Malone has worked as a special assistant in his Catonsville office for nearly 11 years.
“My staff is a family and this unimaginable tragedy is shocking and heartbreaking to us all. I again ask for your prayers,” Cummings said in a statement.
Michael Johnson, 55, who lives a block away and can see the house from his home, described it as a complete inferno.
“Fire was coming out of every window, and as they sprayed it, it seemed like the fire was fighting back or something. It just kept coming and coming and coming. Fire was actually coming out of the sides of the house. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” Johnson said.
Johnson, who didn’t know the family, added that he was praying for the people inside.
“It was just so intense,” he said. “I didn’t think anyone would be able to survive it at all.”
WJZ-TV showed two small children sitting up as they were wheeled away on a stretcher and a woman on a stretcher with an oxygen mask over her face. Images from the scene show firefighters dousing the charred shell of the first two stories of the home between two other large three story single-family homes.

Sky pulls Michael Jackson programme after family complaints

0

NewsHubSky has said it will not air a TV programme about Michael Jackson after his daughter said she was «incredibly offended» by the portrayal of him.
The episode — part of a series called Urban Myths — had been due to air on Sky Arts.
Sky released a statement on Friday saying they had pulled one episode after concerns were raised by Paris Jackson.
The broadcaster said it «never intended to cause any offence».
Statement from Sky:
«We have taken the decision not to broadcast Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon, a half-hour episode from the Sky Arts Urban Myths series, in light of the concerns expressed by Michael Jackson’s immediate family.
«We set out to take a light-hearted look at reportedly true events and never intended to cause any offence. Joseph Fiennes fully supports our decision. »
The stories had been described as «slightly tongue-in-cheek, mischievous and deliberately ambiguous» by Sky Arts on its website.
The episode told the story of Jackson taking a road trip from New York to Los Angeles with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando after the 9/11 terror attacks.
Actor Joseph Fiennes had said he was shocked to be given the part of Michael Jackson last year.
On Thursday, Jackson’s daughter Paris said on Twitter that trailer footage from the episode made her «want to vomit».
«It angers me to see how obviously intentional it was for them to be this insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother [Elizabeth Taylor] as well,» she said.
«Where is the respect? They worked through blood sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies. Shameful portrayal. »
More than 20,000 people also signed a petition to boycott the half-hour episode.
The petition particularly objected to Fiennes’s casting as Jackson instead of a black actor.
«It’s easy to see why the story would make a compelling film — but it’s harder to understand why the actor best known for his role in Shakespeare In Love was the first choice to play one of the world’s most iconic black musicians,» the petition said.
Michael Jackson died in 2009 aged 50 .
