0

NewsHubIn a break from a trend that has seen technology companies invest heavily in low-cost two-in-one hybrids over the past couple of years, Samsung in early January announced a new high-end laptop called the Notebook Odyssey. The Notebook Odyssey is designed for gamers and other PC buyers who crave processing power from the latest Intel Core processors with plenty of other features and options. Samsung plans to announce more Notebook Odyssey details in the spring, including pricing as well as CPU and GPU options. However, what it showed off at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 was impressive. Read on for more about Samsung’s latest high-powered computer, the Notebook Odyssey.

Samsung Galaxy S8's headphone jack may be here to stay after all

NewsHubAll the cool new phones are losing the headphone jack and it’s giving us separation anxiety. After it happened to the Moto Z and iPhone 7 , it was rumored that the Samsung Galaxy S8 would lose its jack, too. But an alleged Galaxy S8 phone case was spotted that shows that this might not be the case (har har).
Images of the case suggest:
Of course, just because the alleged case is said to belong to the Galaxy S8, that doesn’t confirm the phone’s upcoming design. Samsung doesn’t comment on speculation, so take this rumor with a grain of salt. For an extensive list of what to expect from Samsung’s next flagship phone, check out CNET’s Galaxy S8 rundown.

Trump's CIA director wants to track your Facebook

0

NewsHubRep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., nominee for director of the Central Intelligence Agency, was questioned on privacy rights.
If your Facebook profile is public, it’ll be an open invitation for the CIA.
The Central Intelligence Agency is obligated to follow up on information that’s on a public website, including on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, Mike Pompeo, Trump’s pick for the next CIA boss, said during his confirmation hearing Thursday.
«If someone is out there on their Facebook, talking about an attack or plotting an attack against America, I think you would find the director of the CIA grossly negligent if they didn’t pursue that information,» Pompeo said.
During the hearing, lawmakers hit the Republican congressman from Kansas on privacy issues. In 2015, Pompeo pushed to give mass surveillance tools back to the National Security Agency through the » Liberty Through Strength Act II. » The NSA’s mass data surveillance program had been defanged after whistle-blower Edward Snowden’s revelations.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., was concerned with Pompeo’s drive to make mass surveillance more powerful through that bill, which went so far as to propose collecting financial and «lifestyle» information in a «comprehensive, searchable database. » Wyden wanted to know what limits Pompeo’s rejected bill would have had.
«You would be in favor of a new law collecting all of this data about the personal lives of our people,» Wyden asked at the hearing.
Pompeo, who has called for Snowden’s death , said the US needed to collect publicly available information to «keep Americans safe. »
The Orlando nightclub gunman posted a cryptic warning on his Facebook page before committing his murders last June. A student at Ohio State in November reportedly did the same on Facebook before perpetrating a knife attack on campus.
Pompeo said public social media profiles such as those on Facebook could be useful in the CIA’s counterterrorism efforts. He promised the Senate intelligence committee that the CIA wouldn’t unlawfully spy on US citizens, reminding the lawmakers that he’s voted for legislation protecting privacy.
He stressed that he was specifically talking about information available to the public, including Facebook posts. Facebook didn’t respond to requests for comment. The social network already scans people’s posts and chats for any criminal activity, according to a 2012 interview.
The committee also challenged Pompeo on his social media history. After Pompeo said he’s «never believed that WikiLeaks is a credible source of information,» Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, asked, «Well, how do you explain your Twitter? »
The senator brought up a tweet from July 24, 2016, in which Pompeo posted a WikiLeaks story as «proof that the fix was in from» President Barack Obama.
Pompeo stumbled before telling the committee he’d have to «go back and take a look» at his tweet from seven months ago.
WikiLeaks hit back against Pompeo’s criticism on Thursday, tweeting that it had a «perfect record» for accuracy while Pompeo didn’t.
On cybersecurity, Pompeo said he believes the US was attacked by Russia during the presidential election and that he considered it a national risk. He echoed the call made by John McCain, Republican senator from Arizona, to establish a policy on how to respond to cyberattacks.
The potential CIA director also agreed with Trump’s criticisms of US cyberdefense .
«We have an awful lot of work to do. There’s no reason to expect this threat to diminish,» Pompeo said at the hearing.

Consumer Reports retests MacBook Pro after a talk with Apple

0

NewsHubFor decades, Consumer Reports (CR) has acted as a fairly respected consumer watchdog, testing the claims of countless products and offering up assessments to help the public choose in a world filled with dubious advertising. When the magazine said that Apple’s new MacBook Pro was lacking in the battery life department , there was general surprise. After some investigation, though, it appears that the testing conditions were unusual. CR’s methodology may have been flawed , though it exposed a Safari bug in the process.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple said that CR used a hidden setting in Safari that disabled caching completely. CR explains in an update posted yesterday that the test it ran on the new MacBook Pro is the same one it uses for every other laptop. The lab disables caching in the machine’s primary browser and then has it downloading a set of sites over and over again. These conditions were intended to more closely simulate the user going to new webpages over and over, rather than reading the same 10 sites from the cache over and over again.
Apple contends, however, that this method doesn’t reflect real-world usage. It also states that «the use of this setting also triggered an obscure and intermittent bug reloading icons which created the inconsistent results in their lab. » Apple says it asked CR to run tests with that setting enabled and the Macbook Pro consistently delivers the expected battery life under those conditions. The company also notes that the Safari icon downloading bug has been fixed. CR is now fully re-testing the MacBook Pro and will publish its findings.
The idea of «real-world usage» is a hard one to nail down accurately. Users intermittently consume media, browse, open and close the laptop, and plug it in for charging. While CR didn’t want to test re-downloading the same site over and over, many users’ browsing habits often mirror that. While I visit plenty of sites throughout a day’s work and in my leisure time, the majority of my browsing is done on a tight core of the same sites which, as Apple notes, would take advantage of a browser’s caching ability.
As a result of CR and Apple’s cooperation, though, readers have a better understanding of what caused the disparity between the official estimate and tested results. Now, only time will tell if Apple’s fix to Safari will sort out the battery life issues that end-users are reportedly experiencing.

Watchdog Launches Investigation Into Pre-Election Actions of FBI, DOJ

0

NewsHubThe Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General announced today that it will launch a review of the actions taken by the FBI and DOJ ahead of November’s election in connection to the Hillary Clinton email investigation.
The inspector general will look at whether FBI Director James Comey’s press conference and notifications to Congress before the election were appropriate under DOJ guidelines.
Specifically, the watchdog will look into allegations that DOJ or FBI «policies or procedures were not followed» in connection with Comey’s public announcement on July 5, 2016, and his letters to Congress on Oct. 28 and Nov. 6, 2016. The review will also look at whether certain underlying investigative decisions «were based on improper considerations. «
In a statement, Comey said, «I am grateful to the Department of Justice’s IG for taking on this review. He is professional and independent and the FBI will cooperate fully with him and his office. I hope very much he is able to share his conclusions and observations with the public because everyone will benefit from thoughtful evaluation and transparency regarding this matter. «
In July, Comey announced in a news conference that his agency was not recommending that charges be brought against then–presidential candidate Clinton after a yearlong investigation into her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
On Oct. 28, Comey issued a letter informing Congress that in connection with an unrelated case, the FBI had learned of the existence of emails that appeared to be «pertinent to the investigation» and was reopening the probe into Clinton less than two weeks before Election Day.
In a second letter to Congress, delivered on Nov. 6, two days before the election, Comey said that after a review of the newly discovered emails, the FBI concluded that there was no reason to change its previous conclusions.
After the election, Clinton blamed Comey’s first letter to Congress, saying it was a turning point in the race between her and now-President-elect Donald Trump, according to a source familiar with her remarks.
The Office of the Inspector General will also look into allegations that the FBI deputy director and the DOJ’s assistant attorney general for legislative affairs should have been recused from participating in certain matters.
In addition, the office will look at whether DOJ and FBI employees improperly disclosed nonpublic information and whether decisions regarding the timing of the FBI’s release of certain Freedom of Information Act documents «were influenced by improper considerations. «
The review of the FBI and DOJ is in response to «numerous» requests from members of congressional oversight committees, various organizations and the public, according to Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz.
However, it will look not at the substance of the FBI investigation but at whether FBI and DOJ actions adhered to department guidelines.
Former DOJ officials and others were critical of Comey’s handling of the situation at the time.
«Many of us have worked with Director Comey; all of us respect him. But his unprecedented decision to publicly comment on evidence in what may be an ongoing inquiry just 11 days before a presidential election leaves us both astonished and perplexed,» read an open letter penned by former federal prosecutors and high-ranking Department of Justice officials in October.
The situation was complicated because Attorney General Loretta Lynch informally recused herself from overseeing the Clinton investigation after she met with former President Bill Clinton on an airplane over the summer.
ABC News’ Liz Kreutz contributed to this story.

In A Surprise Send-Off, Obama Awards Biden Presidential Medal Of Freedom

President Obama presents a teary-eyed Vice President Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on Thursday.
President Obama awarded outgoing Vice President Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Thursday afternoon.
Calling the former longtime Delaware senator «the best vice president America’s ever had» and a «lion of American history,» Obama gave his White House partner the surprise award in an emotional ceremony, initially billed as a farewell.
After extolling the job that Biden has done, Obama ended it with the unexpected news that he was giving the vice president the nation’s highest civilian honor, with distinction — a designation previously given only to President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II and Gen. Colin Powell.
«To know Joe Biden is to know love without pretense, service without self-regard, and to live life fully,» Obama said.
Overcome with tears and completely caught off guard by the award, Biden praised the president as «remarkable man who did remarkable things for this country» who had truly treated him like an equal partner in governance.
«This honor is not only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the generosity of your spirit,» Biden told Obama. «I don’t deserve this. But I know it came from the president’s heart. »
The two have enjoyed an unusually close working relationship over the past eight years, and Obama himself even joked at the outset of the ceremony that «this also gives the Internet one last chance to talk about our ‘bromance.’ »
Throughout the ceremony it was evident not just how close the two men were but how close their families and staffs had become, and Obama said his «family is honored to call ourselves honorary Bidens. »
Obama has frequently said that picking Biden, his former primary rival, as his running mate in 2008 was one of the best decisions he ever made. Before accepting the nomination, Biden had spent more than three decades in the Senate, amassing a large portfolio and body of work, including stints as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The president said, laughing, that the people of Delaware sent Biden to the Senate as soon as they could, electing him to the Senate at the age of 29 (he turned the constitutionally required age of 30 before he was sworn in).
But before Biden could even head to Washington, his life would be marked with unspeakable tragedy for the first time. While Christmas shopping, his first wife and 1-year-old daughter were killed in a car wreck; his sons Hunter and Beau were injured in the accident. Biden considered resigning before he even took office but was persuaded not to. He was sworn into office at the hospital beside his sons, and for years he would famously commute back and forth every day on Amtrak to be with his family. Later on, he would meet and marry his now-wife, Jill, and they would have a daughter together, Ashley.
In 2015, tragedy would strike the Biden family again when his eldest son, Beau, the former Delaware attorney general who was long seen as his father’s political heir, died at the age of 46 from brain cancer. The loss came as the elder Biden was weighing whether he should make his own run at the Oval Office to succeed Obama. Months later, the still very emotional vice president acknowledged his window had passed and said that he wouldn’t launch his own presidential campaign.
