CLEVELAND — Crews searching Lake Erie on Friday found what may be human remains on a seat from a plane that was carrying six people when it disappeared more than a week ago.
Officials said Friday night that the remains were being analyzed by a medical examiner to determine if they are human. They said the remains were found on a seat from the plane’s passenger compartment.
Divers guided by an underwater detector earlier Friday found the cockpit voice recorder and pieces of the tail from the plane. They continued to search into the evening for the plane’s fuselage debris despite rough conditions that limited visibility to less than a foot just off shore from downtown Cleveland.
Authorities later said they had concluded their search for the day, would resume Monday and would be meeting to determine their next steps. They said they’d continue to search until they’re confident they’ve found all they can.
Transmissions from a locator beacon detector helped narrow the search area, but divers moved slowly as they followed the signals.
Daytime temperatures have been in the teens throughout the search, and Friday’s noon reading in Cleveland was 14 degrees with a wind chill of 3. The search by air and along the shore for debris continued as weather permitted.
Investigators have said the cockpit voice recorder appeared to be intact and would be sent to Washington, D. C., for further examination. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Tim Sorenson said the review is only in the beginning stages.
Searchers said previously they were looking for the cockpit voice recorder in an underwater area about 125 feet by 325 feet. They have found almost daily debris that is consistent with the Cessna 525 Citation, which vanished shortly after takeoff from Burke Lakefront Airport on Dec. 29.
The plane was piloted by John T. Fleming, the president of a Columbus beverage distribution company. The passengers were his wife, Suzanne Fleming; their teenage sons, Jack and Andrew; and two neighbors, Brian Casey and his teenage daughter, Megan Casey, a freshman nursing student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The group was returning to Columbus after attending a Cleveland Cavaliers game in downtown Cleveland.
Calling hours for the Fleming family will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., in Canfield. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the same church.
A second memorial is planned for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Presbyterian Church in Delaware, north of Columbus.
Funeral arrangements for the Flemings’ neighbors were not immediately available.
The families of Fleming and his wife issued a statement thanking supporters for their concern and kindness.
«The families are touched by the tremendous outpouring of support and continue to be grateful to all the agencies and individuals who have aided in the search and recovery efforts, now in the capable hands of the City of Cleveland,» it said.

Gross & Klein LLP: Federal Jury Indicts Two Former Paskenta Tribe Employees on Embezzlement Charges

0

NewsHubCORNING, Calif. , Jan. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — A federal grand jury has criminally charged John Crosby , his mother Ines Crosby , and her sister Leslie Lohse on 69 federal felony counts arising out of alleged embezzlement from the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians (the Tribe), while they were Tribal employees and, in Lohse’s case, an elected official in the Tribal government.
The charges are as follows:
If convicted on every count:
As detailed in the Tribe’s related civil federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO) complaint filed in March 2015 in the U. S. District Court, Eastern District of California , against John Crosby , Ines Crosby , Leslie Lohse , and others, they and their co-conspirators used vicious and callous methods of intimidation and coercion to maintain access to the Tribe’s money, millions of which they stole in order to live a life of obscene luxury, while services to Tribal members went unfunded and Tribe members lived in fear of economic retaliation.
«The Tribe hails the decision by the grand jury to issue this indictment, which represents a significant step towards vindication and justice for the Tribe,» said Tribal Chairman Andrew Alejandre. «As alleged in the Tribe’s complaint, the harm caused by these persons to Tribe members was not limited to the millions they stole from the Tribe, which could have been used to improve the general welfare of Tribe members. These persons also abused and corrupted the Tribe’s institutions of government and terrorized its members, including elders who lived in fear of losing the income that they depended upon to meet basic needs and who, in some cases, had such income taken from them for speaking out, leaving them destitute.
«The Tribe’s success in removing these persons from power in 2014, after over a decade of abuse, was proof of the power of democracy and the resilience and determination of its members. This indictment is proof of the federal government’s ability and willingness to uphold justice on behalf of those members and others like them. The Tribe is very grateful for the work that led to this indictment and prays for the ultimate success of the government’s effort. »
Stuart G. Gross of Gross & Klein LLP, who represents the Tribe in the civil RICO action commented, «This a great development. We look forward to the convictions. »
The Tribe is represented in its civil RICO action, Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians, et al. v. Ines Crosby , et al. , by Stuart G. Gross and Rachel Rivers , of Gross & Klein LLP., Andrew M. Purdy of the Joseph Saveri Law Firm, Inc.

Moore, Thomas share lead at Kapalua

0

NewsHubRyan Moore and Justin Thomas finished strong Friday and shared the lead going into the weekend at the SBS Tournament of Championship.
Moore birdied four of his last five holes, including a pair of wedges that he stuffed into tap-in range on the 16th and 18th holes that carried him to a 6-under 67. He played in the same group with Thomas, who birdied his last two holes for a 67.
They were at 12-under 134, one shot ahead of Patrick Reed (65) and Jimmy Walker (70).
As many as six players were tied for the lead at one point on another picturesque afternoon along the rugged coast of Maui. One of them was Hideki Matsuyama, going for his fourth straight victory worldwide, until he tried to clear the gorge on the 17th from thick rough and paid for it. He made double bogey, and a birdie on the last hole for a 68 — his 12th straight round in the 60s on the PGA Tour — left him three shots behind.
Reed is still struggling with an illness and learned the limits of what he can do when not playing so well. He hit every green in regulation, missed only one fairway and posted a 65.
Walker, who had a two-shot lead after the opening round, saw too many putts burn the edge of the cup. He finally dropped a shot on the 17th when he choked down to the shaft of a wedge from thick rough and didn’t reach the green. A birdie on the final hole still kept him right in the mix to atone for a playoff loss at Kapalua two years ago.
Jordan Spieth also was in the mix, but only briefly. The defending champion ran off nine birdies, five of them after taking a double bogey on the par-3 eighth hole. But he hooked a tee shot into the hazard on the 17th, hit his next into another hazard and missed a 4-foot putt to take triple bogey. Spieth shot a 69 and was seven shots back.
Jason Day, the world No. 1 who is playing for the first time since September, had a 69 and was five shots behind.
Moore is coming off the best part of his career last season. He won the John Deere Classic, lost in a playoff at the Tour Championship, was the final captain’s pick for his first Ryder Cup and made the putt that clinched the cup for the Americans.
He still feels like the same player, though the narrative has changed. He’s now a Ryder Cup player, and he’d like to pile up more victories.
Moore had a pair of three-putts early in the round, both from long range and one of them on a par 5, but he found his groove with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 12th hole. That carried him to his big finish. The only hole he didn’t birdie was at No. 17, where his 12-footer lipped out.
Thomas, determined to be more accurate off the tee this year, tied for the lead with a tee shot into 3 feet on the par-3 11th, and he appeared to escape trouble on the par-5 15th when he was able to slash his second shot out of the hazard. But he came up short of the elevated green and still left with a bogey, which feels worse as long as he hits it.
But he holed a 15-foot putt on the 17th, and his pitch from short of the 18th green settled 6 feet away for another birdie.
As many as six players were tied for the lead at one point. One of them was Hideki Matsuyama, going for his fourth straight victory, until he took double bogey on the 17th. He settled for a 68 and was three behind.

After briefing, Trump denies hacking affected election outcome

0

NewsHubUS President-elect Donald Trump answers questions from the media December 28 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
President-elect Donald Trump made nice with the intelligence community in a statement after he received a briefing from officials Friday. But despite his toned-down rhetoric, he didn’t concede that Russia was responsible for political hacks during the 2016 US election.
Instead, he cast further doubt on the idea that the hacks had any effect on the election whatsoever.
Trump’s statement marks a shift in tone toward intelligence officials without giving any ground on how he views the hacks. Trump has criticized the intelligence community for weeks , dismissing their assessment that Russia was responsible for hacks against the Democratic National Committee and other political organizations in the lead up to the election. «These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction,» his transition team said in a statement in December.
On Friday, Trump first praised US intelligence workers, saying in his statement, «I have tremendous respect for the work and service done by the men and women of this community to our great nation. »
He went on to name a laundry list of parties, including Russia, that «are consistently trying to break through the cyber infrastructure of our governmental institutions, businesses and organizations including the Democrat National Committee. »
Also on that list: «China, other countries, outside groups and people. »
Despite these efforts, «there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines,» Trump said.

Bose suspends the seat, not the car, for a smooth ride

0

NewsHubBose demonstrated the newest version of its active seat suspension in a commuter van.
Bose made its name in audio, and currently designs sound systems for automakers such as Nissan and Cadillac , but the company showed off another side of its business at CES 2017, active seat suspension. Already selling its unique seat suspension technology for commercial trucks, Bose is developing the technology for cars.
At CES, I rode in a van equipped with prototype versions of the seating technology, geared toward showing how riders can be more productive when their seats keep them steady.
Given an iPad and assigned writing and drawing tasks, I sat in a well-padded seat with a footrest while the van drove over obstacles representing potholes, speed bumps and an angled driveway approach. With the Bose system turned off, the van jounced me around with strong vertical and lateral motion, making it difficult and uncomfortable to use a stylus on the iPad.
Bose will need to make its seat suspension technology smaller for use in passenger cars.
With the system activated, my seat moved independently from the vehicle, absorbing much of the external motion. I still felt some of the harsher movements, but I could more easily work on the iPad. Bose’s technology became particularly noticeable when the van passed over uneven bumps. I could see the top and sides of the van moving around me while I remained upright and centered.
Bose thinks the technology could play a big part in autonomous cars, where riders will spend more time working or using tablets.
The production seats for trucks, called Bose Ride, use an electromagnetic motor to control vertical motion, which keeps the rider’s thorax insulated from hard shocks. A sensor detects the beginning of a shock moment, and the seat’s motor responds. The prototype I experienced added lateral control, a cradle in the seat that compensated for side-to-side motion.
Built for commercial vehicles, the Bose Ride seats look too large to fit in a typical passenger vehicle. But Bose showed its work towards making the technology smaller, so that one day it could be more widely used. Imagine a sports car with its suspension designed for perfect handling, while the seat’s suspension serves up a completely comfortable ride.

More than 10,000 exposed MongoDB databases deleted by ransomware groups

0

NewsHubGroups of attackers have adopted a new tactic that involves deleting publicly exposed MongoDB databases and asking for money to restore them. In a matter of days, the number of affected databases has risen from hundreds to more than 10,000.
The issue of misconfigured MongoDB installations, allowing anyone on the internet to access sensitive data, is not new. Researchers have been finding such open databases for years, and the latest estimate puts their number at more than 99,000.
On Monday, security researcher Victor Gevers from the GDI Foundation reported that he found almost 200 instances of publicly exposed MongoDB databases that had been wiped and held to ransom by an attacker or a group of attackers named Harak1r1.
The attackers left a message behind for the database administrators asking for 0.2 bitcoins (around $180) to return the data.
A day later, the number of databases wiped by Harak1r1 had reached 2,500 and by Friday, more than 8,600 had been affected and contained the ransom message.
In addition, other attackers have joined the scheme, researchers counting at least five groups with different ransom messages so far. Together, the groups deleted 10,500 databases, and in some cases, they’ve replaced each other’s ransom messages.
The bad news is that most of them don’t even bother copying the data before deleting it, so even if the victims decide to pay, there’s a high chance they won’t get their information back.
Gevers said he has helped some victims and there was no evidence in the logs that the data had been exfiltrated. He advises affected database owners not to pay and to get help from security professionals.
MongoDB administrators are advised to follow the steps on the security checklist from the MongoDB documentation in order to lock down their deployments and prevent unauthorized access.

Panasonic offers a flexible battery for wearables

0

NewsHubPanasonic has developed a flexible lithium ion battery for use in wearable devices that maintains its electrical characteristics even after repeated bending.
The battery means more freedom for designers of wearable devices, who are constrained by the need for inflexible areas to hold the battery and some electronics.
Three prototypes of the battery were on display at this week’s CES electronics show in Las Vegas. The largest is 40mm by 65mm, the medium size is 35mm by 55mm, and the smallest is 28.5mm by 39mm.
All three are just 0.45mm thick, considerably thinner than a credit card, which is 0.76mm thick. They can be bent up to a radius of 25mm or twisted to an angle of 25 degrees.
A prototype flexible lithium ion battery developed by Panasonic on show at CES in Las Vegas on Jan. 6, 2017.
The batteries weigh just a gram or two and output 3.8 volts.
The batteries are small enough to be embedded inside credit cards or similar sized card systems. Batteries currently used in such cards degrade faster than normal because of the flexing and twisting they experience from being in a wallet.
The new batteries, which are still under development, don’t suffer from the same problems. Flexing up to the 25mm limit results in a loss of just 1 percent of capacity.
Panasonic is one of the world’s largest lithium ion battery makers. It produces cells for numerous applications, from consumer AA cells to the batteries used in electric cars. The company is in a high-profile partnership with Tesla to supply batteries for its cars from the custom built Gigafactory in Nevada.

Intel's latest NUCs get a boost from Kaby Lake

0

NewsHubIntel continues to refine and update its Next Unit of Computing (NUC) mini-PCs , which take much of the hardware from its Ultrabook line and package it into a tiny square chassis. The major updates for this year’s NUCs include the latest seventh-generation Intel Core processors and support for Optane memory.
Intel’s Optane memory , co-developed with Micron, is a non-volatile memory technology that’s faster than flash but denser than DRAM. It doesn’t replace standard RAM in these NUCs, which have two familiar SO-DIMM sockets for up to 32GB of DDR4 at 2133 MT/s. Instead, Optane is meant to offer speedy storage, possibly in an M.2 format , to provide fast boot times and application launching.
This year’s NUC models offer a number of processor and storage options. The top of the line NUC7i7BNH is powered by a Core i7-7567U , a dual-core processor with a max turbo clock of 4.0GHz and a 28W TDP. Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics 650 IGP runs the display. For storage, there’s an M.2 slot and room for a 2.5″ HDD or SSD up to 9.5mm tall. All this hardware fits into a chassis that’s only 4.5″ x 4.4″ x 2″ (or 11.5 cm x 11. cm x 5.1 cm).
The NUC models with Core i5 or Core i3 CPUs are available in two configurations: one with a slot for a 9.5-mm-tall drive, and a low-profile model that only has room for an M.2 unit. The low-profile variants (whose names end in K rather than H) have similar dimensions, but are only 1.4″ (3.5 cm) tall.
The kits labeled NUC7i5BNH and NUC7i5BNK are powered by Intel’s Core i5-7260U , a dual core processor with a max turbo clock of 3.4GHz and a 15W TDP. This processor integrates Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics 640 unit. The Core i3 variants of this year’s NUCs, the NUC7i3BNH and NUC7i3BNK , have Intel’s Core i3-7100U processor inside. This dual-core CPU has a base frequency of 2.4GHz, a 15W TDP, and offer up an Intel HD Graphics 620 IGP.
The rest of the feature set in these NUCs remains quite solid. They have dual-array front microphones for taking advantage of Cortana, an HDMI 2.0 port, and Intel’s 802.11ac dual-band wireless connectivity. There’s also a Thunderbolt 3 port on tap that can offer USB 3.1 and DisplayPort connectivity. A Micro SDXC slot with UHS-I support and Bluetooth 4.2 support round out the list of features.
