John Lewis: Trump slammed for attack on rights icon

0

NewsHubPoliticians, entertainers and others have come to the defence of a US civil rights campaigner, Congressman John Lewis, who has become embroiled in a row with President-elect Donald Trump.
Mr Trump tweeted that Mr Lewis was «all talk» and should focus on his constituents, after he said Mr Trump was not a legitimate president.
But Mr Lewis’ supporters reacted with anger, saying he was a hero and icon.
Mr Lewis was a leading figure in the 1960s civil rights movement.
He is the last surviving speaker from the 1963 March on Washington, led by Martin Luther King.
Trump’s history on Twitter
Twitter combusts over Streep v Trump row
The tweets that say so much and reveal so little
The row came as civil rights activists led by Rev Al Sharpton began a week of protests ahead of Mr Trump’s inauguration on 20 January.
Several thousand protesters braved near-freezing temperatures to march to the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial in Washington DC, chanting «No justice, no peace».
In a separate development on Saturday, African American Broadway star Jennifer Holliday pulled out of performing at the inauguration after pressure from followers, many of them from the LGBT community.
Holliday, who has sung for both Republican and Democrat presidents, apologised for her «lapse of judgement» and said she did not realise her participation would be seen as expressing support for Mr Trump.
Mr Lewis, a Democrat, said on Friday he would not attend the inauguration on the grounds that he did not see the Republican as a legitimate president.
«I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected,» he told NBC’s Meet the Press. «And they helped destroy the candidacy of [Democrat] Hillary Clinton. »
Mr Trump responded in tweets on Saturday : «Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime-infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk — no action or results. Sad! »
But Mr Lewis’ supporters were quick to rally round.
California Senator Kamala Harris, a Democrat, said it was wrong to treat him in this way.
«John Lewis is an icon of the Civil Rights Movement who is fearless in the pursuit of justice and equality,» she tweeted. «He deserves better than this. »
Others mentioned Mr Lewis’ bravery and the fact that the exchange had taken place on the eve of Martin Luther King Day, on 16 January.
Many of them linked to photos of the two men, or to the 1965 so-called Bloody Sunday march in Alabama, in which Mr Lewis received a fractured skull as the protest was violently broken up by police.
Republican Senator Ben Sasse tweeted his support, saying Mr Lewis’ «talk» had changed the world. However, he said he disagreed with his decision to boycott the inauguration, adding: «It isn’t about a man. It is a celebration of peaceful transfer of power. «

Trump Unleashes Twitter Tirade Against Civil Rights Legend

0

NewsHubNEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Donald Trump tore into civil rights legend John Lewis for questioning the legitimacy of the Republican billionaire’s White House victory, intensifying a feud with the black congressman days before the national holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and as the first African-American president prepares to leave office.
Trump tweeted on Saturday that Lewis, D-Ga., “should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”

mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 14, 2017
The incoming president added: “All talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!”
Lewis, among the most revered leaders of the civil rights movement, suffered a skull fracture during the march in Selma, Alabama, more than a half-century ago and has devoted his life to promoting equal rights for African-Americans.
For many African-Americans the contrast between this inauguration and Barack Obama’s first one, in 2009, was striking.
The 16-term congressman said Friday that he would not attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol this coming Friday, and that it would be the first time he had skipped an inauguration since joining Congress three decades ago.
“You know, I believe in forgiveness. I believe in trying to work with people. It will be hard. It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” Lewis said in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that is set to air Sunday.
“I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton,” Lewis said.
Lewis’ spokeswoman, Brenda Jones, declined to respond to Trump and said the lawmaker’s “opinion speaks for itself.”
“We as a nation do need to know whether a foreign government influenced our election,” she said.
U. S. intelligence agencies have said Russia meddled in the election to help Trump win. After spending weeks challenging that assessment, Trump finally accepted that the Russians were behind the election-year hacking of Democrats. But he also emphasized that “there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines.”
Democrat Clinton received 2.9 million more votes than Trump but lost the Electoral College vote.
Lewis’ Democratic colleagues quickly came to his defense Saturday. At least 10 others have also vowed to boycott the inauguration ceremony.
“Let us remember that many have tried to silence @repjohnlewis over the years. All have failed,” tweeted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The Democratic Party of Georgia called on Trump to apologize to Lewis and the people of his district.
“It is disheartening that Trump would rather sing the praises of Vladimir Putin than Georgia’s own living social justice legend and civil rights icon,” state party spokesman Michael Smith said.
“John Lewis is an American hero,” Rep. David Cicilline, D-R. I., said in a tweet directed at Trump. “You’re a fake billionaire who won’t release his taxes. Put down Twitter and get serious about governing.”
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N. J., piled on Saturday, drawing comparisons to the president-elect’s treatment of the outgoing president at times.
Anyone who attacks @repjohnlewis loses legitimacy in my eyes, especially someone who made such a craven effort to delegitmize @BarackObama
— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) January 14, 2017
“Anyone who attacks @repjohnlewis loses legitimacy in my eyes, especially someone who made such a craven effort to delegitimize @BarackObama,” he tweeted.
New York Congressman Jerry Nadler told WCBS 880’s Mike Smeltz that he found Trump’s response “disgusting.”
“When someone holding the moral high ground that John Lewis does says what he said, it’s really incumbent on Trump to his conduct to prove him wrong,” Nadler said. “To just slam him and say he’s a terrible person or something, it’s disgusting.”
Also Saturday, Rev. Al Sharpton held a rally to protect Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream and President Barack Obama’s legacy, drawing at least 1,000 people. Ninety-nine groups, both for and against Trump, have permits to demonstrate on the day he becomes president.
Trump continues to use Twitter to attack his adversaries, just as he did throughout the campaign.
Trump’s assertion that Lewis’ district is “falling apart” and “crime infested” is hard to prove.
Georgia’s 5th Congressional District includes the Atlanta metro region, which has a large African-American population. The district is considered one of the nation’s fastest growing areas, but its crime and poverty rates are higher than the national average.
The district has an 8.2 percent unemployment rate and the median household income is about $48,000, according to the Census Bureau.
The area also covers part of the upscale Atlanta neighborhood of Buckhead, along with the headquarters for Fortune 500 companies such Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines, Emory University, Georgia Tech, several historically black colleges and universities and the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the world’s busiest.

These Democratic Lawmakers Won’t Attend Trump’s Inauguration

0

NewsHubTwenty Democratic lawmakers now say they are skipping Donald Trump ‘s inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20, a number that grew Saturday after the president-elect dismissed a congressman who is a civil rights icon as «all talk. »
Some Democrats had said they were boycotting the event prior to Saturday, but more Democratic members of the House said they would not attend after Trump in a series of tweets attacked Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, who a day earlier said he doesn’t see Trump as a «legitimate president» due to alleged Russian interference in the election.
Trump dismissed Lewis, a Freedom Rider who was beaten during a 1965 march in Selma and was arrested and jailed repeatedly in opposition to segregation, as «all talk, talk — no action or results. »
The attack, coming just days before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, seem to have energized a number of Lewis’ fellow Democratic lawmakers, as they joined his boycott of the inauguration after Trump’s tweet storm.
Below are the Democratic lawmakers who do not plan on attending.
The Arizona Congressman stood in the House Chamber and explained Friday that he would not remain in Washington, D. C. for the inauguration.
«My absence is not motivated by disrespect for the office, or motivated by disrespect for the government that we have in this great democracy,» Grijalva said. «But as an individual act — yes, of defiance — at the disrespect shown to millions and millions of Americans by this incoming administration, and by the actions we are taking here in this Congress. »
Grijalva plans to spend the day at home, meeting with constituents he believes will be affected by President-elect Trump’s administration.
«Donald Trump has proven that his administration will normalize the most extreme fringes of the Republican Party,» said Rep. Barbara Lee in a statement, an 18-year veteran of Congress. «On Inauguration Day, I will not be celebrating. I will be organizing and preparing for resistance. »
Lee cited concerns over Russian hacking and a «divisive and prejudiced campaign,» alleging that the president had normalized bigotry and appointed a white nationalist — former Breitbart Executive Chair Steve Bannon — as his chief strategist. Bannon has denied being a white nationalist.
Congressman Ted Lieu said in a statement that Trump would be in violation of the Constitution when he takes office next week because of his many alleged conflicts of interest. Lieu said he would oppose Trump when necessary and work with him when possible, but he believed the president-elect went too far when he attacked Lewis.
«For me, the personal decision not to attend Inauguration is quite simple,» Lieu said. «Do I stand with Donald Trump, or do I stand with John Lewis? I am standing with John Lewis. »
Lewis sat down for an exclusive interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd on Friday and explained that he did not consider Trump’s presidency as legitimate because of Russian interference.
«That’s not right. That’s not fair. That’s not the democratic process,» Lewis said about the alleged Russian hacking, which U. S. intelligence officials believe was to help Trump get elected and to discredit Hillary Clinton.
Lewis said he could not attend the president-elect’s inauguration in good conscience, a view that has gained support since Trump attacked Lewis’ leadership and performance on Twitter in response.
«You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong,» Lewis said.
This is the first time Lewis has not attended the inauguration since he entered Congress 30 years ago.
«I could not look at my wife, my daughters or my grandson in the eye if I sat there and attended as if everything that candidate Donald Trump had said about The women, about The Latinos, or The Blacks, The Muslims or any of the other things he said in his speeches and Tweets — that any of that is OK or erased from my memory,» the congressman said in a Jan. 10 statement.
Rep. John Conyers, the dean of the House of Representatives, will not attend the inauguration, his office told CNN on Saturday. A reason was not reported.
A member of the St. Louis-area congressional delegation, Rep. William Lacy Clay will not attend Trump’s inauguration. His spokesman, Steve Engelhard, told the Post-Dispatch that he would «be back home in St. Louis speaking to school kids» instead.
«Many have given their lives and dedicated their lives to working to fulfill Dr. King’s dream and make it a reality, and it is up to us to preserve his legacy and the legacy of President Barack Obama to ensure that we do not go back in time!,» Espaillat wrote in a post on his Facebook page on Saturday.
«President-elect Donald Trump is trying to take us back! And the people Trump is appointing- Steve Bannon, Jeff Sessions — are trying to take us back!
That’s why I am not attending the presidential inauguration. Donald Trump and the hate-filled rhetoric that plagued his election simply will continue in his administration.
THIS is not Dr. King’s Dream! »
Congressman Blumenauer told Oregon Public Broadcasting that this would be the first inauguration he’s missed since he entered Congress two decades ago. He will attend events protesting the president-elect instead.
The 15-term Congressman will not attend the ceremony, but he typically avoids the inauguration. The congressman told Oregon Public Broadcasting that he doesn’t like to attend the «pomp and circumstance events in Washington. »
«I’ll do my best to work with him when I think he’s doing the right thing for the country,» Schrader told OPB. «But he hasn’t proved himself to me at all yet, so I respectfully decline to freeze my ass out there in the cold for this particular ceremony. »
Schrader plans to attend an Oregon event in opposition of Trump.

Mike Pence responds to Donald Trump — John Lewis disagreement

0

NewsHubVice President-elect Mike Pence said he found Rep. John Lewis’s criticism of President-elect Donald Trump “deeply disappointing” — and that Mr. Trump, who lambasted Lewis on Twitter this weekend, “has every right to defend himself.”
“Donald Trump won this election fair and square, 30 out of 50 states, including Georgia,” he told CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “… To hear John Lewis — a man that I served with, that I respect — to question the legitimacy of the election and to say that Donald Trump will not be a legitimate president was deeply disappointing to me.”
“To hear that he was not going to attend the inauguration this Friday — I hope he reconsiders both statements,” Pence said.
Lewis, in an interview with NBC last week, said he did not plan to attend the inauguration this Friday — his first time missing the ceremony in three decades — and questioned Mr. Trump’s legitimacy as president.
“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” he said. “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”
In response, Mr. Trump said Lewis — one of the most visible members of the Civil Rights Movement — is “all talk, talk — no action or results,” and said Lewis’s Georgia district is “crime infested” and “falling apart.”
Why, moderator John Dickerson, did Mr. Trump feel the need to take a swing at Lewis rather than just letting the comments go?
Mr. Trump “has every right to defend himself,” Pence said, suggesting that Lewis’s comments about election legitimacy seemingly conflict with his status as a leader for voting rights.
“We honor the sacrifice that he made but part of the result of what happened on Bloody Sunday [in 1965] and the courage that he showed was the Voting Rights Act,” he said. “So for someone of his stature not just in the civil rights movement but in voting rights to make a comment that he did not consider Donald Trump to be a legitimate president, I think, is deeply disappointing.”

Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican senator, says ‘partisan’ John Lewis wrong on Trump victory

0

NewsHubSen. Rand Paul said Sunday that Rep. John Lewis’ status as a civil rights hero doesn’t make him immune to criticism.
“I do appreciate him being a civil rights icon, but I would also say that doesn’t make us immune from criticism or debate,” the Kentucky Republican said on “CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Mr. Lewis took center stage this weekend in the Democratic attack on the legitimacy of President-elect Donald Trump, saying that he believes Russian email hacking during the campaign helped Mr. Trump win.
Mr. Trump fired back on Twitter, saying the Georgia Democrat should focus on helping his Atlanta district and hurting inner cities. The tweets prompted Democrats to launch fresh accusations of racism.
“None of us actually want to be considered to be the racially insensitive and so it’s a very, very important subject, but I think we shouldn’t ignore that people are partisan,” said Mr. Paul, who as a GOP presidential candidate clashed with Mr. Trump but later endorsed him as the party’s nominee.
“John Lewis is a partisan. I have a great deal of respect for him, but he’s a partisan and I disagree with him on issues,” he said. “I should be able to honestly disagree with him and not have it all come back to I have no appreciation for a civil rights icon because of this.”
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Saturday, Mr. Lewis said he would skip the inauguration, making it the first time he miss a swearing-in of the president since being elected to Congress in 1986.
“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” Mr. Lewis said “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected and they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”
Mr. Trump fired back at Mr. Lewis in a series of Twitter posts, saying the congressman should focus on problems in his Atlanta district. He tweeted: “All talk, talk — no action or results. Sad!”
Mr. Trump later tweeted: “Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the U. S. I can use all the help I can get!”

The big top comes down: Ringling Bros. circus is closing

0

NewsHubELLENTON, Fla. (AP) — After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on “The Greatest Show on Earth.” The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The Associated Press that the show will close forever in May.
The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise.
“There isn’t any one thing,” said Kenneth Feld , chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. “This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family.”
The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.
Ringling Bros. has two touring circuses this season and will perform 30 shows between now and May. Major stops include Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn. The final shows will be in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau County Coliseum on May 21.
The circus, with its exotic animals, flashy costumes and death-defying acrobats, has been a staple of entertainment in the United States since the mid-1800s. Phineas Taylor Barnum made a traveling spectacle of animals and human oddities popular, while the five Ringling brothers performed juggling acts and skits from their home base in Wisconsin. Eventually, they merged and the modern circus was born. The sprawling troupes traveled around America by train, wowing audiences with the sheer scale of entertainment and exotic animals.
By midcentury, the circus was routine, wholesome family entertainment. But as the 20th century went on, kids became less and less enthralled. Movies, television, video games and the internet captured young minds. The circus didn’t have savvy product merchandising tie-ins or Saturday morning cartoons to shore up its image.
“The competitor in many ways is time,” said Feld, adding that transporting the show by rail and other circus quirks — such as providing a traveling school for performers’ children- are throwbacks to another era. “It’s a different model that we can’t see how it works in today’s world to justify and maintain an affordable ticket price. So you’ve got all these things working against it.”
The Feld family bought the Ringling circus in 1967. The show was just under 3 hours then. Today, the show is 2 hours and 7 minutes, with the longest segment — a tiger act — clocking in at 12 minutes.
“Try getting a 3- or 4-year-old today to sit for 12 minutes,” he said.
Feld and his daughter Juliette Feld, who is the company’s chief operating officer, acknowledged another reality that led to the closing, and it was the one thing that initially drew millions to the show: the animals. Ringling has been targeted by activists who say forcing animals to perform is cruel and unnecessary.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a longtime opponent of the circus, wasted no time in claiming victory.
“After 36 years of PETA protests, which have awoken the world to the plight of animals in captivity, PETA heralds the end of what has been the saddest show on earth for wild animals, and asks all other animal circuses to follow suit, as this is a sign of changing times,” Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wrote in a statement.
Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, acknowledged the move was “bittersweet” for the Felds but said: “I applaud their decision to move away from an institution grounded on inherently inhumane wild animal acts.”
In May of 2016, after a long and costly legal battle, the company removed the elephants from the shows and sent the animals to live on a conservation farm in Central Florida. The animals had been the symbol of the circus since Barnum brought an Asian elephant named Jumbo to America in 1882. In 2014, Feld Entertainment won $25.2 million in settlements from groups including the Humane Society of the United States, ending a 14-year fight over allegations that circus employees mistreated elephants.
By the time the elephants were removed, public opinion had shifted somewhat. Los Angeles prohibited the use of bull-hooks by elephant trainers and handlers, as did Oakland, California. The city of Asheville, North Carolina nixed wild or exotic animals from performing in the municipally owned, 7,600-seat U. S. Cellular Center.
Attendance has been dropping for 10 years, said Juliette Feld, but when the elephants left, there was a “dramatic drop” in ticket sales. Paradoxically, while many said they didn’t want big animals to perform in circuses, many others refused to attend a circus without them.
“We know now that one of the major reasons people came to Ringling Bros. was getting to see elephants,” she said. “We stand by that decision. We know it was the right decision. This was what audiences wanted to see and it definitely played a major role.”
The Felds say their existing animals — lions, tigers, camels, donkeys, alpacas, kangaroos and llamas — will go to suitable homes. Juliette Feld says the company will continue operating the Center for Elephant Conservation.
Some 500 people perform and work on both touring shows. A handful will be placed in positions with the company’s other, profitable shows — it owns Monster Jam, Disney on Ice and Marvel Live, among other things — but most will be out of a job. Juliette Feld said the company will help employees with job placement and resumes. In some cases where a circus employee lives on the tour rail car (the circus travels by train), the company will also help with housing relocation.
Kenneth Feld became visibly emotional while discussing the decision with a reporter. He said over the next four months, fans will be able to say goodbye at the remaining shows.
In recent years, Ringling Bros. tried to remain relevant, hiring its first African American ringmaster, then its first female ringmaster, and also launching an interactive app. It added elements from its other, popular shows, such as motorbike daredevils and ice skaters. But it seemingly was no match for Pokemon Go and a generation of kids who desire familiar brands and YouTube celebrities.
“We tried all these different things to see what would work, and supported it with a lot of funding as well, and we weren’t successful in finding the solution,” said Kenneth Feld .

SpaceX successfully returns to launch with Iridium-1 NEXT Falcon 9 mission

0

NewsHubSpaceX has succeeded in launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, its first launch since a Falcon 9 rocket exploded on a launch pad in pre-flight procedures in September 2016. The launch took place at 9:54 AM PT Saturday, during an instant launch window. It’s a huge victory for SpaceX, which has had to delay its launch schedule since the explosion.
The launch also resulted in a successful recovery of the Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage , which marks the seventh time SpaceX has succeed in landing this stage back for potential later re-use. SpaceX’s second-stage also successfully reached low-earth orbit, where it will begin the next stage of the mission, deploying Iridium’s 10 satellites.
This mission is the first in a series for client Iridium, that will see it deploy 70 satellites in a network for voice and data communication. It’s also a green light for SpaceX in terms of the company pursuing its aggressive launch schedule, which is something the private launch provider needs to do in order to continue locking in new contracts and working towards its goal of decreasing the cost of launches even further still.
In 2016, SpaceX completed only 8 of a planned 20 launches, due to the September 1 explosion that halted all new launches for four months. That has not been good for the company’s bottom line, resulting in a year that likely saw it exacerbate a reported $250 million loss in 2015.
SpaceX also had to push back its timelines for test launches of its Dragon crew capsule as a result of the September incident. The original target date for a Dragon test launch with people on board was 2017, but it’s now been pushed back to 2018. The company still hopes to fly a mission without crew on board by the last quarter of this year, however.
Crewed mission capabilities will help SpaceX expand its ability to serve contracts, since it can then serve the ISS for more than just supply runs. It also sets the stage for SpaceX’s future goals of providing missions to Mars, with a target initial date for those aspirations still set for 2024.
SpaceX successfully began deploying the Iridium NEXT satellites as of around 11 AM PT/2 PM ET. All satellites were successfully deployed as of 11:13 AM PT / 2:12 PM PT, signalling a successful mission for the space company’s first flight back.
