Tepco says not clear if material found under Fukushima reactor is melted fuel

0

NewsHubTOKYO: Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), operator of Japan’s wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant, said on Monday it is not clear if material found below the damaged No. 2 reactor at the site is melted nuclear fuel.
The utility inserted a camera under the reactor vessel and images from the probe showed black material coating a grating.
Tepco cannot rule out the possibility the material is uranium fuel that melted down in the 2011 disaster and will continuing analysing the photos and data, a spokesman told reporters at a press conference.

Trump says will announce Supreme Court pick Tuesday

0

NewsHubUS President Donald Trump said he will announce his nomination to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, a pick likely to tilt the court to conservatives on crucial issues such as abortion and gun control.
Trump’s choice will fill a vacancy left by the sudden death last year of conservative justice Antonin Scalia, which left the court evenly divided between four conservative and four liberal justices.
«I have made my decision on who I will nominate for The United States Supreme Court. It will be announced live on Tuesday at 8:00 P. M. (W. H.),» Trump said on his Twitter account.
In comments to reporters, he called it a «very big decision» and said his choice was someone «unbelievably highly respected. »
Abortion, gay marriage, gun control — the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of many of the most sensitive issues of American life and law.
Its members, who must be confirmed by the Senate, are named to life terms so their influence is long lasting.
Trump has said he wants a candidate who is against abortion and firmly backs Americans’ right to own guns.
Among those tipped as frontrunners for the post are Neil Gorsuch, a respected appellate court judge who is considered an ideological match to Scalia, and William Pryor, an Alabama appellate court judge considered an opponent of abortion rights.
Trump had said he would announce his pick on Thursday, but has moved the date up amid a raging controversy and confusion over his order to temporarily bar travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries and refugees from entering the United States.
His Supreme Court pick is certain to set off another pitched battle with Democrats.
Former president Barack Obama had named Merrick Garland, an appellate court judge, to fill Scalia’s seat but Republicans used their control of the Senate to keep his nomination from being considered.

Washington, Seoul Join Forces to Thwart North Korea's Nuclear Threat

0

NewsHubWashington and Seoul have vowed to join forces and strengthen their joint military capabilities to thwart North Korea’s nuclear threat in the Korean Peninsula.
ChannelNewsAsia said that In a statement released by the White House on Sunday, US President Donald Trump and South Korea’s acting president Hwang Kyo-Ahn have agreed to step up their joint defense of Seoul against the nuclear threat from the belligerent state.
Like Us on Facebook
«President Trump reiterated the ironclad commitment to defend South Korea, including the provision of extended deterrence, using the full range of military capabilities,» the White House told the news agency.
THAAD Deployment
The statement added that the two leaders have reiterated their commitment to strengthening their defense ties to defend South Korea which includes the US deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on Korean soil.
The news media added that US defense secretary James Mattis is scheduled to visit South Korea on Wednesday to discuss the THAAD deployment and other areas of military concern.
Despite Trump’s warning in his campaign rallies that he would withdraw US forces from the country if Seoul fails to pay the US for its defense, White House officials said Washington recognizes the close friendship between the two nations and Mattis’s trip reflects the importance of US-Seoul alliance.
Nuclear Program
Last year, Washington and Seoul have agreed to deploy the THAAD system after Pyongyang had repeatedly launched missiles in the Korean Peninsula, the last of which took place on September 9. Earlier reports said China has vehemently opposed the THAAD deployment saying it might be used later in Beijing and that it would jeopardize the security and order in the Korean Peninsula.
The US has repeatedly assuaged China’s fears about the THAAD deployment, making it clear that the anti-missile system would not be used against Beijing. Hwang had warned early on that North Korea’s nuclear program is progressing at a ‘dangerous pace’ as he called for the immediate deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system.
Despite opposition from its citizens, Hwang said Seoul needs the immediate installation of THAAD to protect his country from the dangers of Pyongyang’s missile launches.

Kodak celebrates Academy Award nominations for film movies

0

NewsHubROCHESTER, N. Y. (AP) — Kodak says some of Hollywood is still hanging on to film, pointing to 29 Academy Award nominations for movies captured on its 35 mm and 16 mm Motion Picture Film stock as proof of its success.
Kodak says “La La Land,” ”Fences,” ”Hidden Figures,” ”Jackie,” ”Nocturnal Animals,” ”Loving,” ”Silence,” ”Suicide Squad,” and “Hail Caesar!” are among movies whose producers have bucked the digital cinematography trend.
Kodak is the last big supplier of motion picture film. Competitor Fujifilm stopped its production in 2013.
The Rochester-based photography and film pioneer began making movie film in 1896. Production was in danger of being halted until 2014, when the company reached new supply agreements with the major Hollywood studios. At the time, it had seen sales fall 96 percent since 2006.

A man was killed by tigers Sunday at a zoo in China

0

NewsHubA man was mauled to death by tigers in front of his wife and kids at a zoo in Ningbo, China, on Sunday. The man was visiting the zoo with his wife, kids, his coworker surnamed Li and Li’s wife. But he and Li decided to not buy tickets which cost 130 yuan to visit the zoo and scaled the zoo’s 3-meter-tall outer wall. The victim entered the tiger enclosure not being followed by his friend.
Immediately, the tigers surrounded Zhang before staff used fireworks and water guns to scare them away. The tigers mauled the man and dragged him to the trees. Workers shot and killed a tiger and carried Zhang out of the enclosure. Zhang was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment but he died due to his injures. This isn’t the first time that zoo visitors in China who entered tigers’ enclosure were killed. Opinions on Chinese social media include regrets for the tiger that was killed. «A fucking idiot climbs over two walls into a tiger’s home and the tiger gets shot and killed for doing what is natural. How is that fair? They should have just let him die,» argued one among many commentators.

Toyota sold 10.2 million vehicles worldwide, fewer than VW

0

NewsHubTOKYO (AP) — Toyota has relinquished the title of the world’s biggest automaker, reporting Monday that it sold 10.175 million vehicles worldwide in 2016, fewer than Volkswagen’s 10.31 million.
General Motors reports its tally next week. If GM’s number falls short, it will be the first time the German automaker has become No. 1.
It’s a milestone achievement despite the taint to VW’s reputation from a huge scandal over cheating on emissions tests. Booming China sales helped offset that damage.
Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has held the global auto crown for the past four years, although it fell behind General Motors in 2011, when production was hit by a quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.
Detroit-based GM was the top-selling automaker for more than seven decades until Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models, surpassed it in 2008.
Toyota’s global sales last year were slightly better than in 2015, up 0.2 percent, but not good enough to beat Volkswagen, which has the Audi, Porsche and Skoda brands, and boosted its global sales 3.8 percent from the year before. GM makes the Cadillac and Opel cars.
In 2015, Toyota sold 10.15 million vehicles while Volkswagen was second with 9.93 million and GM third with 9.8 million.
Toyota officials have repeatedly said they are not concerned with being No. 1 and just want to make good cars. Volkswagen was keen to dethrone Toyota but disavowed that goal after CEO Martin Winterkorn lost his job over the emissions scandal.

Trump signs executive order aiming to slash regulations

0

NewsHubPresident Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday aiming to kickstart campaign pledges to slash regulations.
The measure will expand regulatory review with the goal of revoking two regulations for every new one put forward, according to a senior administration official. Under the order, federal agencies will propose rules they want to drop and the White House will review them.
With the order, Trump followed through on repeated campaign promises to cut rules that he said hold back the economy. In meetings with business leaders since his election, Trump has touted his efforts to reduce regulations and cut corporate taxes.
While signing the order surrounded by small business owners, Trump called it «the largest ever cut by far in terms of regulation. » It sets a budget each year for what new regulations would cost the economy, companies and employers.
For fiscal 2017, it gives a budget of $0 for new regulations.
Critics of Trump’s economic and regulatory agenda have raised concerns that his administration will reduce protections for consumers and the environment in an effort to help businesses. Many of the specific regulations Trump has criticized relate to environmental protection.
«There will be regulation, there will be control, but it will be a normalized control,» Trump told reporters at the White House.
The White House has already put a temporary regulatory freeze in place, but the order establishes the process for when the freeze ends, according to the official.
The Office of Management and Budget, which Trump has tapped budget hawk Mick Mulvaney to lead, will have discretion to give the agencies guidance.
