Apple taking baby steps in India, sells 2.5m iPhones in 2016

0

NewsHubApple is slowly succeeding at carving out a slice of India’s growing smartphone pie, selling 2.5 million iPhones in 2016, according to Counterpoint Research .
Most tellingly, the company is reportedly strongly considering manufacturing phones in India, according to NDTV , which would take advantage of Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi’s Make in India tax incentive.
Smartphone shipments to India grew 18 percent last year, Counterpoint noted, more rapidly than the 3 percent global rate. The market in India is growing fast but is already huge — more than 300 million people now own smartphones, Counterpoint said.

Scientists Bracing for Battles With Trump Over Climate Change

0

NewsHubPresident Donald Trump’s early orders on climate change are sparking fears of a White House war on science, The Hill reports.
Scientists and researchers are getting set for even more battles ahead, according to the website.
«We asked some environmental employees and one said, ‘We’re in the clown car to crazy town,'» said Jeff Ruch, the executive director of the group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
«We view this as sort of the opening act of what’s going to be a long and bloody drama. »
Trump was criticized by scientists when the new White House website launched and didn’t have a page on climate change and was missing other environmental pages, as well, The Hill reported.
And critics noted the Environmental Protection Agency’s climate change website is missing articles. Also gone from the website, according to The Hill, is a key passage, that reads: «All major scientific agencies of the United States…agree that climate change is occurring and that humans are contributing to it. »
«Everything is up for review» and work on the website is centered on «scrubbing it up a bit, putting a little freshener on it, and getting it back up to the public,» an EPA spokesman told The Hill.
But Rush Holt, a former Democratic congressman and the CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), said efforts at the EPA are reason for concern.
«We’re trying to stand up to it because I can’t be sure this isn’t a trial balloon, and if it’s a trial balloon, I don’t want to exaggerate it right now and say that this is the worst thing that ever happened,» Holt said.
«But I don’t want a trial balloon to go uncommented upon and become permanent policy.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported multiple climate-related reports are also missing from the State Department’s website.
Those reports have disappeared from the State Department’s website within the past few days, according to the newspaper.

Rzecznik Kremla: Pierwsza rozmowa telefoniczna Putina z Trumpem

0

Trump plan for tax on Mexico exports raises eyebrows in Asia

0

NewsHubTOKYO — Talk of a possible 20 percent tax on U. S. imports from Mexico raised eyebrows today in Asia, where exports to the U. S. drive growth in many economies.
Reaction to the news was more muted than it might have been, however, since much of the region was closed for lunar new year holidays.
Japanese officials said Friday they hoped to meet soon with U. S. officials. Finance Minister Taro Aso said the Japanese side should “thoroughly explain” how Japanese companies have been contributing to American society, including creating jobs.
“It would be important to exchange opinions to accurately convey the reality and establish a steady relationship,” Aso told reporters.
President Donald Trump’s press secretary Sean Spicer said the 20 percent tax was among several options to finance building a wall along the U. S. southern border, but no decision has been made.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (PAYN‘-yuh nee-EH‘-toh) scrapped a scheduled trip to Washington next week over the issue. He has flatly rejected Trump’s assertion that Mexico will pay for the wall on its border.
The peso fell 0.6 percent against the U. S. dollar, to 21.35 pesos to the dollar but recovered to about 21.23 late Friday in Asia. The Japanese yen also weakened against the dollar, to 115.23 yen from Thursday’s close of 114.46 yen.
China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported that Trump was considering the 20 percent tariff without any editorial comment. However, the report cited unnamed analysts saying Trump would have to withdraw the U. S. from the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, to be able to impose such a tax. Trump has said he wants to renegotiate NAFTA.
Though he did not refer directly to Trump, in remarks marking the eve of the lunar new year on Friday, Premier Li Keqiang said, “Above all, we remain convinced that economic openness serves everyone better, at home and abroad.
“The world is a community of shared destiny. It’s far preferable for countries to trade goods and services and bond through investment partnerships than to trade barbs and build barriers. Should differences arise, it behooves us all to discuss them with respect and a keen sense of equality,” he said.
Uncertainty over future trade ties with the U. S. rose after Trump pulled the U. S. out of a Pacific Rim trade initiative, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, that formed the centerpiece of former President Barack Obama’s moves to strengthen U. S. economic ties in the region.
It’s unclear how much of Trump’s campaign rhetoric will become reality, said Kent Calder, director of Asia Programs at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
“But the general symbolism that America is growing protectionist I think deeply concerns almost all Asian countries because they are pre-eminent exporters, and many of them heavily dependent on exports and so that has major implications for them, even if this is specifically aimed first of all at Mexico,” he said.
Japan’s chief government spokesman refused comment on tensions over the border wall, but said Tokyo was watching for any impact on Japanese companies.
A steep tariff on exports from Mexico to the U. S. would pinch manufacturers like Toyota Motor Corp., which like nearly all other automakers builds small cars in Mexico to take advantage of its lower wages.
Toyota employs thousands of people at factories in the U. S, but it also is planning to build a plant in Mexico to make the popular Corolla subcompact.
About 70 percent of the vehicles Japanese car makers sell in the U. S. are made in the U. S., but a tax on cars exported from Japan — 1.8 million last year — would “clearly be a major headwind,” Capital Economics’ economists Marcel Thieliant and Mark Williams said in a report issued Friday.
Trump also has threatened to impose steep tariffs on imports from China, which ran a $319 billion surplus with the U. S. in January-November 2016, compared with Japan’s $62.4 billion surplus and Mexico’s $60 billion, according to U. S. figures.
Associated Press writers Ken Moritsugu and Mari Yamaguchi contributed to this report.

Toshiba, Desperate for Cash After Scandal, Will Sell Microchip Business

0

NewsHubTOKYO — Ill-fated investments in nuclear power projects by Toshiba of Japan have already precipitated an embarrassing accounting scandal at the company. Now the company is selling its most valuable business to try to undo the damage.
Toshiba, one of Japan’s oldest and proudest technology conglomerates, said on Friday it would spin off its microchip division. The business makes the information-storing “brains” inside millions of smartphones, digital cameras and other devices, and it has been the biggest contributor to Toshiba’s profits in recent years.
The move is evidence of Toshiba’s desperation for cash after the punishing nuclear-related losses came to light last month.
In December, Toshiba warned it was preparing to write off “several billion U. S. dollars” because of ballooning expenses at its American nuclear subsidiary, Westinghouse. That followed Toshiba’s admission in 2015 that it had inflated its earnings by $1.2 billion over seven years — a scandal that company investigators attributed in part to nuclear-project managers, who they said had disguised faltering revenues and cost overruns.
Toshiba is expected to detail the extent of its write-downs next month. Analysts have suggested they could amount to $4 billion to $7 billion, enough to put Toshiba’s future at risk. Banks have indicated they will keep lending money so the company can pay its bills, but without that lifeline, Toshiba, a 140-year-old business, could collapse.
Toshiba said it had not yet decided what form the semiconductor spinoff would take, or how much of the business it would sell to outsiders. But there is not much time to figure it out; the company said it wanted to complete the process by March 31, the end of its fiscal year.
Analysts estimate the semiconductor business could be worth between 1.5 trillion and 2 trillion yen, or $13 billion to $17 billion, if Toshiba sold all of it. One option would be to sell shares to the public, though a private sale to another technology company would be quicker and easier to arrange, particularly if Toshiba chose to keep part of the company.
Damian Thong, an analyst at Macquarie Securities, said bringing in a minority investor was “clearly the default option” for Toshiba, which is eager to stay in the semiconductor business.
“Undermining that core business would be anathema in Japan, not just for Toshiba, but for the government and the whole technology ecosystem,” he said. “It needs to sell just enough to give creditors peace of mind, but not enough that it loses control.”
Some see broader national interests at stake.
Getting out of semiconductors entirely would not just deprive Toshiba of a crucial future revenue stream. If a foreign buyer swooped in, it would also take one of Japan’s few remaining semiconductor producers out of domestic hands. The business’s most successful technology, NAND flash memory, was developed by Toshiba decades ago.
One public declaration of interest in Toshiba has come from Canon, the Japanese camera company, which uses Toshiba’s chips in its products and bought a medical device producer Toshiba spun off in 2015.
Canon’s chairman, Fujio Mitarai, is a former head of Keidanren, the lobbying group representing Japan’s largest corporations, including Toshiba. He said last week that the semiconductor business was a valuable asset for Japan and “must be protected” and that Canon “would positively consider” investing.
Other potential buyers include Western Digital, the American semiconductor company, which works with Toshiba in some areas; Tokyo Electron, a Japanese company that produces equipment for semiconductor factories; and Foxconn of Taiwan, the contract manufacturer that recently took over Sharp, another ailing Japanese technology brand.
Terry Gou, Foxconn’s billionaire founder, said in an interview with Toyo Keizai, a Japanese business weekly, that he was interested in purchasing assets sold off by Toshiba, potentially including the semiconductor operation.
