2 tossed out of GoCar in wreck in SF’s Mission District

0

NewsHubTwo people on a sightseeing tour of San Francisco were injured Sunday when they were launched out of their open-top GoCar in a crash in the Mission District, officials and witnesses said.
The man and woman were tossed out of the three-wheel vehicle when they collided around 1:40 p.m. with a Toyota sedan in the intersection of South Van Ness Avenue and 24th Street, said Sgt. MichaelAndraychak, a police spokesman. The tiny GoCars are rented out for city tours, generally on an hourly basis, and are mostly seen in popular tourist spots.
Paramedics took the two to San Francisco General Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available, but they were expected to survive, police said.
Michael Pesina was on his route cleaning up city streets for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department when he heard the wreck.
“I heard a big boom,” he said. “I came down and saw two people lying in the street. They were conscious, thankfully. I didn’t want to see any dead bodies.”
Pesina quickly called 911, while others at the scene tended to the victims. He said the two people were not wearing helmets, but he was not sure whether they were taken off at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota — who did not want to be named — said the GoCar ran a red light southbound on South Van Ness before he collided with them.
He remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Dennis Mercer , a member of GoCar’s management team, responded to the scene to collect the mangled vehicle.
“The car is rooted,” he said, using Australian slang for ruined while he tried to figure out what to do with the wrecked car after towing it out of the intersection.
Investigators were looking into what led to the crash, but said they do not believe alcohol was a factor.
The intersection of South Van Ness Avenue and 24th Street was closed for about an hour while police processed the scene.

Why is Daniel Hannan's banner pic a work of science fiction? How to negotiate a progressive Brexit

0

NewsHubSince Daniel Hannan, a formerly obscure MEP, has emerged as the anointed intellectual of the Brexit elite, The Staggers is charting his ascendancy…
People out there in the big wide world are often helpful enough to point me towards Daniel Hannan’s latest brainfarts. He’s pretty prolific, but some of his work seems so boneheaded that I’ll get the same link sent to me by two, three, or, on one occasion, five different people.
This week it was this particular tweet – a retweet from last September; it’s all repeats on the internet these days – that everyone seemed keen to point me towards.
It’s like Ayn Rand has been reincarnated in the form of 15 year old hoping to study PPE at Oxford, isn’t it? That tweet suggests a world view so comfortingly simple that nobody actually needs money, and if you try to tax anyone anything they might decide to stop earning any in a fit of pique. (At time of writing, incidentally, Daniel Hannan has yet to resign his job as a Member of the European Parliament.)
If I get too far into this one, though, there’s a danger I’ll find myself attempting to disprove the assumptions of classical economics through the medium of sarcasm, and while I’m not shy about my own abilities to bullshit, I think that may be a bit beyond me. So instead I’m just going to leave it there for everyone to marvel at while we talk about flags.
Daniel Hannan’s header has been annoying me for months now, because it clearly takes place in a parallel universe in which the Anglosphere is a real thing rather than just the masturbatory fantasies of a certain type of free market ideologue. It combines the flags of the UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, into a single red, white and blue monstrosity: the fact that one of Britain’s best known Eurosceptics uses this as his banner pic implies, at least to me, that he thinks this is what we should have instead of the EU.
At first glance, the assumption here seems to be that Britain’s natural allies are all the other countries who speak English. Except it clearly isn’t that, because a lot of other countries also speak English – Ireland, India, South Africa, to name but three – yet are mysteriously missing from the flag.
A better definition might be that it’s the bits of the British Empire where our forefathers planted their own colonies and attempted to wipe out the natives, rather than simply lording it over them through a combination of divide-and-rule and Maxim guns. More charitably, it’s the places that have a slightly misty-eyed relationship to the same stuff – free markets, Magna Carta, the notion that Britain invented freedom – that Dan himself does.
The notion of the Anglosphere is not entirely without foundation: these five countries constitute the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which implies a certain degree of closeness, and there’s a fair amount of military co-operation too. In the event of a nuclear holocaust, indeed, one of the instructions British prime ministers can leave for their nuclear subs is, basically, “You are now Australian. »
But nonetheless oh my god, mate, are you actually high? The Anglosphere is not a political unit – outside the world of George Smiley and GI JOE, it might as well not exist – and the idea of a US that is increasingly a) diverse but b) protectionist going anywhere near that kind of thing is just delusional. Dan is basically just saying he’d be happier if Britain’s primary allies were countries which we founded, which speak English, and which contain depressingly high concentrations of people who agree with him.
I was going to end with a crack about how the Anglosphere flag was such a work of science fiction that Dan might as well employ the flag of Star Trek ’s United Federation of Planets or, if that was too lefty, the Terran Federation from Blake’s 7 (at least everyone there speaks English). But I’ve had a better idea. There is another rainy, sea-faring kingdom in a popular work of fantasy that recently took advantage of continent-wide chaos to break away from a larger political unit. In what may or may not a foretaste of things to come, it later used it as an excuse to attack its former allies.
I am talking, of course, about the Iron Islands from Game of Thrones .
What is dead may never die.
Today, Open Britain and the Fabian Society have come together to try and answer some of the hard questions Brexit poses for the Left, and to outline the principles that should inform our approach to Brexit, in a new pamphlet. As an MP who campaigned for Remain representing an area that voted Leave I know how important it is for Labour to engage with the outcome of Brexit negotiations to ensure working people’s interests are protected.
It is fantastic that progressive groups are thinking about Brexit and going beyond the platitudes of “red, white and blue Brexit.” That’s why today[s document has been welcomed by Keir Starmer and the Shadow Brexit team and supported by Labour MPs.
Open Britain and the Fabian Society suggest six principles that should government Labour’s approach to Brexit, covering the economy, our foreign and security policies, immigration, the laws that protect our environment and rights at work, domestic economic reform, and the political way forward. This approach is aimed at preserving the best aspects of our EU membership, while respecting the result and tacking the underlying frustrations and pressures that led so many of Labour’s natural supporters to vote to leave the EU.
The greatest threat to working people is the spectre of a destructive hard Brexit, which would impose onerous and damaging tariffs, customs duties and red tape on our exports to, and imports from, the EU. This would mean fewer jobs, lower growth, and higher prices. A full 44 per cent of Britain’s exports go to the EU, making it comfortably our largest trading partner. A progressive Brexit approach to trade should prioritise three strands – continued participation in the single market and customs union, unless it can be proven empirically that doing so will not damage our economy; a rejection of the WTO model, which would dramatically increase barriers to trade; and a transitional arrangement, should one be necessary, to bridge the likely gap between Britain leaving the EU and a new, permanent trading arrangement being agreed.
This must be combined with action on immigration, which was such a powerful driver of the vote to leave the European Union. What the British people want is greater control over immigration without paying an economic cost. This must be our approach too, as we look for a new deal on immigration from the EU that includes, for example, tying free movement to those who have a job offer and arguing for sector-specific emergency brakes that could be applied in cases of identifiable economic stress. It is important to note that The Dutch Deputy PM is calling for reform and David Cameron’s «special status» renegotiation conceded the principle that rules could be altered in response to exceptional inflow of workers causing serious problems. At the same time, however, Labour must not abandon our internationalist, progressive principles. We should continue to welcome the immigrants our economy needs, and stand up for the European Union citizens who are already resident in this country, and now find their rights under threat.
Another priority must be an approach to security and foreign policy that keeps our streets safe and prevents strategic shrinkage. We should seek to maintain our current level of co-operation with Europe on security, including British participation in the European Arrest Warrant, Europol, and databases such as the Schengen Information System. At the same time, we must seek to prove to allies in Europe and the United States that we remain a serious partner on the world stage. That means maintaining the 0.7 per cent target for international aid spending, leading action against climate change, and continuing to play a full role in Nato, including maintaining the 2 per cent of GDP funding target.
One of the great achievements of the single market, one that has not been fully appreciated by some, is the swathe of common rules that protect workers, consumers, and our environment. Labour must stand for the maintenance and advance of these standards, and fight ceaselessly against the Tory instinct to seek a competitive advantage in making Britain the Sports Direct economy of Europe. While this future might appeal to some business tycoons, it would be a grim future for working people.
Tackling the root causes of frustration and alienation, especially in Labour communities, must be spearheaded by changes to our domestic economy. Action to rebalance our economy in favour of working people – through more training and skills funding, greater investment in regional economies, worker participation and a focus on exports – is long overdue. This will, however, be undermined without urgent action to replace the EU funding streams that currently benefit deprived areas of our country.
And ultimately, this whole approach must be undertaken in a spirit of consultation and consent that has been lacking from the Government. Parliament must be involved not grudgingly but willingly, by putting down a detailed plan before the House of Commons and accepting that MPs must vote on the triggering of Article 50. The devolved administrations, as well as local government leaders in the English regions, should be given a seat at the top table, rather than the occasional unenlightening meeting with David Davis.
Others will have their own valuable ideas about Labour’s response to Brexit. What is needed now is policy detail within the context of the enduring Labour values of equality and social justice, coupled with a commitment to human rights and internationalism. When the Prime Minister presents her «plan» there must be a credible Labour alternative – today marks the start of putting one together.
Phil Wilson MP is a leading supporter of Open Britain

Photos show Japanese whaling off Antarctica, group says

0

NewsHubAustralia has sharply criticised Japan after photos emerged allegedly showing it had resumed whaling off Antarctica.
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd released the images, which it said showed a dead minke whale on a Japanese vessel on Sunday.
It comes two days after Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Sydney to bolster defence ties with Australia.
Australia’s Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg said it was not necessary to kill whales for study.
«The Australian Government is deeply disappointed that Japan has decided to return to the Southern Ocean this summer to undertake so-called ‘scientific’ whaling,'» he said on Monday.
«Australia is opposed to all forms of commercial and so-called ‘scientific’ whaling. » Japan’s whaling has been ruled illegal by the Australian Federal Court.
A global moratorium on commercial whaling has been in place since 1985, with exemptions that allowed Japan to hunt some whales for «scientific research».
But in 2014 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Japan’s scientific Antarctic whaling programme should cease. Tokyo suspended whaling for one season but announced it would soon begin another «scientific» whaling programme , drawing criticism from environmental groups and the Australian and UK governments.
Japan insists it is trying to prove the whale population is large enough to justify a return to whaling for commercial purposes. It says it has to kill the mammals and study them in order to carry out its research.
Australian Greens senator Nick McKim said the ICJ had the power to impose «fines or sanctions» on Japan.
Sea Shepherd said the photos showed the Japanese vessel Nisshin Maru inside the Australian Whale Sanctuary on Sunday.
The boat’s crew «scrambled» to cover the dead whale with a tarpaulin after spotting the anti-whaling group’s helicopter, Sea Shepherd said.
Two smaller boats, the Yushin Maru and Yushin Maru #2, also covered their harpoons, the group claimed.
«The fact that the Japanese crew went to cover up their harpoons and the dead minke whale on deck just shows that they know what they’re doing is wrong,» said Wyanda Lublink, captain of Sea Shepherd ship the MY Steve Irwin.
Sea Shepherd said it was the first minke slaughter to be documented since the ICJ ruling.
Sea Shepherd has been patrolling the Southern Ocean for five weeks.
Jeff Hansen, managing director of Sea Shepherd Australia, said the Australian government should do more to protect whales.

NewsHubA Wisconsin man and one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted showed up in a surprising place — El Paso, Texas.
FBI Agents and El Paso police officers arrested 24-year-old Terry A. D. Strickland on Sunday morning on warrants stemming from the shooting of two men in Milwaukee on July 17. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail.
Milwaukee police found two men, ages 38 and 39, shot outside the home where Strickland was believed to be living at with his daughter, officials said.
TEXAS FUGITIVE: Man sought for 1983 slaying in Austin added to FBI list
Witnesses said the shooting grew out of a group of seven or eight men arguing in front of the home, the FBI said. Strickland is charged with using a.40-caliber handgun and shooting into the group.
Strickland allegedly then stood over one man and repeatedly shot him. He then turned around and shot the other victim in the head, officials said. He then fled the scene and left his daughter at the home, officials said.
Strickland, who is originally from Illinois, was charged with two counts of first degree intentional homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon. An arrest warrant was issued for him on July 28.
SOUGHT: Fugitive last seen in Houston added to most wanted sex offender list
A charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was added against Strickland and a federal warrant was then issued for his arrest by the U. S. Eastern District of Wisconsin.
Strickland had a $100,000 reward offered for any information leading to his arrest.
Strickland was the 512th fugitive to be placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list which was established in 1950.
